Pearl Harbor 2.0
Time, by John Koster

Original Article

Posted By:ketchuplover, 12/8/2012 8:13:49 PM

The “infamy” of December 7, 1941, is deeper than most Americans have ever imagined. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was almost certainly the result of a Soviet plot—“Operation Snow”—carried out by Harry Dexter White, a figure of enormous influence in the Roosevelt administration and a known Soviet spy. Americans remember Pearl Harbor as the work of a Japanese military machine hell-bent on a war of conquest. The truth is more complicated. (snip) Fortunately for Stalin, his intelligence service had an “agent of influence” in Washington perfectly situated to provoke a U.S.-Japanese war—Harry Dexter White, a high-ranking Treasury official.

Comments:
I had a college history professor in the 70s who insisted that FDR provoked the Japanese into attacking in order to pull us out of the Depression. According to this, it was FDR who was provoked.

No mention of Alger Hiss, who committed greater damage to our country.

Japan depended on us for almost everything, given that Japan is an island of few raw material resources.

Up until Nanking and several other overt military actions, we shipped our resources to them, especially metals and fuel.

We cut them off after it became apparent they were mounting a war machine and they were livid that we did.

The Germans made overtures and Japan was convinced - they attacked us.

Pearl Harbor was even less a surprise as 9/11.

All the pieces were there.

We did not or would not put those pieces into place.

But those pieces were there ...

... we ignored them for several reasons.

Most importantly because we were in the midst of a Great Depression and could not afford to go to war.

FDR actually created the demand for war with his abysmal policies.

Churchill begged us to help and FDR ignored those pleas until it became obvious that war was the only thing that might save us from the misery of his delusional dreams.

A sane person would have seen WWII coming in 1932.

The Left, with Obama at the front, is fast propelling us into a similar situation.

The only thing that saves leftists and their corrupt incompetence is war.

When they run out of other people´s money ...

... they let the blood of our children run profusely.

#2: Good post, well done. Thanks.

Also, the US denied helium to Germany for it´s Zeppelins [we had the only known source then]. But note, much of the fire in the Hindenburg disaster is from the diesel fuel [note the black smoke; hydrogen burns in a clear, colorless flame with no smoke].

Re #2´s recap -- one could also take the two World Wars as WWIA and WWIB, with a hiatus between.

Last, if one winds up in a war, fight it. Same for being attacked on the street or in your home. No rules, no holds barred, maximum ferocity from the first instant. What? Pardon? Well, if you value your life, liberty, and health, is why. An unlawful aggressor deserves zero consideration. But that´s his [bad] choice.

The point of the article sure seems to be that the Soviet Union was "behind" or caused the Japanese to attack. That´s absurd. The Japanese had their reasons, none of them smart, and made their own decisions. The build up to the war was in the 1930´s. That´s almost 80 years ago. Countless books have been published about this subject. But only now "Time", which is failing financially, comes out with the "truth"? I think not.

Reply 6 - Posted by: LouD, 12/8/2012 11:47:39 PM     (No. 9055960)

Kind of defeats Stalin´s purpose to want the U.S. to fight Japan instead of declaring war on Germany and helping the Russians by fighting Hitler and diverting half of Germany´s forces away from the Reds.
I read long ago of Roosevelt´s wish to fight Germany, but could not justify an attack on them. So it was his idea to goad Japan into a war with us, and Germany would have to honor it´s treaty with Japan and declare war on us. Which was what Roosevelt was aiming for all along.
It makes as much, or maybe more, sense than time´s (small "l" deliberate" convoluted theory. Some of you previous posters have noted similar ideas. I can´t remember exactly where I read that (age, you know), but at the time it sounded correct. Still does to me.

What #5 says regarding Time and this article

I don´t think you can blame the war on a single cause. Or on the spies at all.

The Rising Sun by John Toland is a great book about how and why the Japanese chose war.

#6 is right. Roosevelt really wanted to get us into the war to help England but the American public would not support it. The anti-war group America First led by Lindbergh was very highly supported. Even when the destroyer Rueben James was sunk on escort duty in the Atlantic on October 31, 1941 the anti-war sentiment did not change. The plan to provoke a Japanese attack was laid out in a memo written October 7, 1940 by Lt. Commander Authur McCollum. He proposed 8 actions to provoke the Japanese to attack us so that we could enter the war to help England. Every one of those 8 proposed actions were carried out over the next year. You can read about this in Robert Stinnett´s book "Day of Deceit". He shows how the plan was put in place and how the commanders in Hawaii, Admiral Kimmell and General Short, were not given the information we received from the breaking of the Japanese codes. Also, Kimmell was ordered not to do patrol flights north of Hawaii, where we knew the Japanese fleet was heading by radio directional finding of the transmissions from the large ships to the smaller ships. There was no radio silence, that is another myth put out by the government. All of the modern ships and the aircraft carriers were out of Pearl Harbor that weekend. Only the old and obsolete battleships were left behind to be attacked and get us into the war. I don´t think they thought the attack would be as successful as it was. They underestimated the ability of the Japanese navy air power.

While extending the payroll tax cut through the end of last year, members of Congress last fall took what many feel was a long overdue whack at the cost of their retirement plan. They bumped up the rate at which federal employees contribute to their pension plan, saving an estimated $15 billion over the next 11 years. They also made sure that none of the increase applied to themselves. Anyone in service before the law went into effect would pay into the pension plan at the old rate. Mindful of the repeated rounds of cuts the military has already endured, Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs, recently delivered a grim warning: "If you want [the military] to be doing what it´s doing today, then we can´t give you another dollar." His worries reflect reductions that started in 2009 and have reached crippling levels, even in President Obama´s proposals to avert sequestration.
