Thought we were running out of fossil

and the U.S. could tap undreamed
reserves of gas and oil

Daily Mail [UK], by Nigel Lawson

Thirty years ago, I was Secretary of State for Energy in Margaret Thatcher’s government, and one way and another I have been a close observer of the energy scene ever since. In all that time, I have never known a technological revolution as momentous as the breakthrough that has now made it economic to extract gas from shale.[Snip] Until recently, the cost of extracting the gas has been prohibitive. But the combination of two innovative technologies--horizontal drilling and fracking to release the natural resources--has changed all that. The consequences are difficult to exaggerate. Not just in terms of

Comments:
I´m just waiting for Obama to come out with some means of halting the production of shale gas. I know there are various stirrings about it in the greenie, occupy, eco-warrior populations but no strong movement--yet.

Not only that, but the geo-sounding technology and computer analysis are so good these days that the chance of drilling and finding oil/gas is somewhere around 90%, unlike the 40% up through the 1970´s.

The upcoming movie starring Matt Damon - Promised Land - is meant to influence public opinion against fracking.

O.P., it will be done via an EPA mandate, or several of them. In conjunction, the MSM will ramp the fracking ´threats´ to the environment. If that doesn´t fly, then there are always executive orders.

Cheap energy and Obama are like vampires and sunlight. They can´t coexist.

We were told in the 1970´s that we were running out of oil.

It was a myth then.

Why does the left hate Fracking?

Because it gets cheap natural gas, a waste product of the earth, into the hands of consumers who build things with the energy.

Who is backing the anti Fracking???

The Russians who have billions of cubic feet of gas they want to sell.

When Obama´s EPA director says there is NO EVIDENCE that Fracking causes environmental damage, and you still want to stop it, you are part of a lynch mob. No evidence yet you still condemn the process. Get a rope.

Environmental damage has nothing to do with the opposition to fracking. The energy independence it ushers in will reduce the leverage others in the (ESP Third) world will have over our policies. This isthebasic concern.

Fracking is the answer to a lot of our financial woes. More cheap energy=more industry=more jobs=more revenue.
We the People will not allow Obama to get in the way of saving our country from financial collapse.
It is time to draw our line in the sand.
Any effort to quash efforts to grow our way out of debt should be viewed as betrayal of America. Freeze spending too, except for defense.

Fuel is a renewable. Nature takes care of that for but the GODLESS don´t want to admit it. Fossil doesn´t only refer to fossilized prehistorical animals, it also means anything that is deep under ground and the earth´s movement and heat turns into FUEL for us to harvest.

Here again...
´´Interesting reading ....
´´o recapitulate, Stalin’s team of scientists and engineers found that oil is not a ‘fossil fuel’ but is a natural product of planet earth – the high-temperature, high-pressure continuous reaction between calcium carbonate and iron oxide – two of the most abundant compounds making up the earth’s crust.´´

I worked as a down hole tool tech for three years in west Texas and eastern NM- and I can honestly tell you, there is an unlimited supply of gas and oil readily available right here in the USA. Every single place you dill deep, it is a guarantee you will hit high pressure gas. Every well we have ever drilled in the US has only produced about 8% of all the oil it is capable of. Fracking and other technology can make all that readily and easily available- Whats stopping it? Government working hand in hand with big oil who want to keep supplies short and prices high- it really is just that simple. Get government/oil companies to quit colluding, prices drop and we are back to 1950´s market.

The only problem with being awash in a sea of crude oil is finding the refining capacity to turn it into finished products. You know like motor oil, diesel, gasoline, asphalt, kerosene, etc. Two things I don´t think I´ll see built in the years I have left on this earth are another NEW oil refinery or another NEW nuclear electric generating power plant.

Fracking and horizontal drilling are not "new" technologies; I´ve done both since 1980, and directional drilling wasn´t new even then. What is new is applying the techniques to shale formations as a reservoir rock as opposed to viewing shale as the source rock for overlying sandstone or limestone formations. This is possible due to improvements in drilling fluids that prevent the clays in shale formations from swelling and sloughing off in the borehole. It opens up a whole new world in exploration, one that has the anti-energy control freaks trying to figure out how to stigmatize the tried-and-true techniques so that can be killed or regulated out of existence.

OP -- Enviro-whakos are already claiming that fracking is causing more earthquakes!

As to the govt & big oil collusion, I think they control the production for different reasons, but they work in tandem, just the same, to create a stranglehold on U.S. supplies while leaving us dependent on OPEC´s price fixing.

That is one of the reason´s I admire former Gov. Sarah Palin so much. She revoked the lease on Alaskan land from a big oil company in order to allow drilling there. Our next president has to make that a priority. We need to take our power back from the Muslim nations & push them into diversified business growth.

Ok, Reality Checks from an old oil field engineer.
[1] Frac´ing (hydraulic fracturing) is nothing new, we did it with liquid nitroglycerin in the 1930´s, now we pump in a sand-water slurry under pressure. At last count Texas had 153,000 active oil wells and probably half or more have been frac´d at least once.
[2] Frac´ing is a small part of the technology, the big one is horizontal completions so rather than 200~300´ of exposed well bore for oil to dribble in you can have 5000, 10,000 .. 42,000´ is the max so far .. feet of it. Cheap 3-D seismic analysis helps a lot too.
[3] Most all oil and gas is first formed in shale but before we could only get out the portion which migrated into more permeable sandstone, etc. We have NO ideat of what the total recoverable shale oil in the world is; and won´t for years until we drill a lot of it. The US is way ahead but the rest of the world will catch up.
[4] Neither BigOil nor Mid-East countries "set" the price of oil. Most lifting contracts index off the prices set by buyers & sellers on the public commodity exchanges in New York, London and Rotterdam. Which YOU can partake in if you have the courage!
[5] The bulk of mid-east oil goes to Asian, mainly China; they provide only 17% of US supply.
