A new blood clot preventer from Pfizer Inc and Bristol-Myers Squibb Co reduced the risk of recurrence of clots in veins and lungs and death by 80 percent with no increase in major bleeding in a study testing extended use of the drug. (Snip) Apixaban belongs to a new class of blood thinners that aim to replace decades old and difficult to use warfarin. The drug, which will be sold under the brand name Eliquis, is widely considered to be one of the most important new medicines for Pfizer and Bristol-Myers, both of which saw their top selling products lose patent protection in the past year.

Prevents blood clots and strokes in patients with atrial fibrillation. Somehow, I suspect that its cost and with the new 0bamaCare, I´ll be getting aspirin, instead.

First it was injectable lovenox, then oral pradaxa and xeralto that were the safe and easy alternative to warfarin.
All cause major bleeding complications that are evident in the data NOT sponsored by the manufacturer.
These new oral drugs have no known reversal agent and the lawsuits will soon follow.
Billions and billions for a drug that treats something incredibly rare and plays mostly on the fears of patients driven by the maker of the drug.
Atrial fibrillation patients should be on coumadin. Not very convenient, but reliable and REVERSABLE.
Total joint patients shouldn´t be on any of this crap as the risk of clot is more overplayed than being eaten by the Loch Ness Monster.

As a coumadin user at age 46, I would at least be interested in an alternative. I do somewhat vigorous work, and dislike the amount of bruising I have to put up with.

Pradaxa, anxiously awaited, and widely touted as an alternative to Warfarin(Coumadin) has caused a few hundred deaths, and is now the object of a potential class action suit, according to the various ads of law firms on TV. Best to wait for the results of this one before allowing youself to be a guinea pig! Granted, Warfarin is a pain in the neck to monitor, but preferable to being dead. As for bruising, you have my sympathy, as I take Plavix, and have learned to tiptoe through life to avoid bruising as much as possible, not always an option for someone younger, to be sure. My husband is on Warfarin. No matter the blood thinner, you will bruise easily. Better than a blood clot!

I am a coumadin taker too and will be on blood thinners for life because I have factor V leiden and have had a number of blood clots and one PE. WHen Pradaxa came out, my then internal med doctor said he never likes to put anyone on new medication right away since they are often found not to be as safe as they thought. But this one does seem interesting. Since I am only 49, I hope I will see the day I don´t have to do all the blood testing with coumadin.

New Orleans - Louisiana lawmakers on Tuesday questioned the wisdom of eliminating the state´s income tax without raising sales taxes, one day after Governor Bobby Jindal said he would delay his plan to scrap the income tax. Bahrain on Tuesday became the first Arab country to blacklist Hizbullah as a terrorist organization, the Al Arabiya network reports. The move came a week after the Bahraini parliament voted to label the group a terrorist organization. Its alleged backing and training of radical Shiite groups against Bahrain was the main reason given for the decision, the report said. The Bahraini cabinet has tasked the interior and foreign ministries with implementing the decision. “The measure is to protect Bahrain’s security and stability from Hezbollah’s threats,” Bahraini MP Adil al-Asoumi told Al Arabiya.

The biggest border crossing between North Korea and China has been closed to tourist groups, a Chinese official says, as nuclear tensions mounted, but business travel was allowed to continue. "Travel agencies are not allowed to take tourist groups to go there, since the North Korean government is now asking foreign people to leave," the official at the Dandong Border Office said. "As far as I know, business people can enter and leave North Korea freely," added the official, who declined to give his name, without making clear which country had ordered the move.

Wyoming Republican Sen. Mike Enzi may be gearing up to run for re-election in 2014, but that doesn’t mean Liz Cheney is ruling out a run for the Senate seat now. A source close to the politically active daughter of Vice President Dick Cheney tells The Daily Caller that she is still seriously considering running. North Korea appears to be preparing a fourth underground nuclear weapons test at Punggye-ri, the site of its previous test, a South Korean government source says. "They" would be cicadas, the big, noisy bugs that climb out of the earth about every decade and a half to make everyone´s life more exciting. Only one of my six children has left New York for economic reasons but the strain of living in this expensive nanny state is weighing heavy on my other five and their families. As a native New Yorker, I´ve seen its middle class population decline over the years due to its neglect of blue collar families which is ironic since this is a Democrat city. With the recent arrests of several local politicians for corruption perhaps New Yorkers will pay more attention to those they put in office. Given their past indifference in local elections this is highly unlikely.

LOS ANGELES — Jonathan Winters, the cherub-faced comedian whose breakneck improvisations and misfit characters inspired the likes of Robin Williams and Jim Carrey, has died. He was 87. The Ohio native died Thursday evening at his Montecito, Calif., home of natural causes, said Joe Petro III, a longtime family friend. Petro said Winters died of natural causes and was surrounded by family and friends. During an appearance on MSNBC´s Morning Joe, Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) said expanded background checks are "not enough," and private gun sales cannot continue because they allow terrorists to buy guns in the United States. "Can a terrorist currently buy a gun in this country? Yes. Can a felon? Yes. You go to a gun show and virtually no questions are asked," Feinstein claimed. Joe Scarborough chimed in later in the segment to echo Feinstein´s claim, asserting, "So now we have al Qaeda terrorists saying, ´Kill Americans, it´s easy, just go to gun shows, get an assault weapon.´"
