Legislators Hope To Slip Farm Subsidies
And Food Stamps Into Fiscal Cliff Deal

BuzzFeed, by Rebecca Berg

Original Article

WASHINGTON — Amidst a flurry of fiscal cliff negotiations, the leaders of the House and Senate agriculture committees are hoping to pull off a legislative sleight of hand. Eager to pass a farm bill, which would set federal spending on agriculture subsidies and food stamps for the next five years, they have been negotiating privately to reach a compromise that could be easily approved as part of a larger fiscal cliff package. That path to passage would conveniently circumvent the logjam in the House, where disagreements between fiscal conservatives and farm-state Republicans have impeded the bill´s progress.

We don´t need a farm bill. No more welfare for rich farmers. And no more EBT food stamps for the inner city thugs and the white trash lazy bones.

We need Congressmen who ask why. Why should 60% of premiums for crop insurance be paid by taxpayers. Why should we subsidize corn that is going to be fermented and distilled to make ethanol. Why not let sugar be used if it is cheaper? Why do we have tariffs on sugar and ethanol? Why use 800,000 bpd of ethanol at all when TX oil production grew a million barrels per day since 2009 and ND grew 600,000 bpd. These question need to be addressed, not swept under the carpet to 5 years.

What good is an intelligence establishment if it can´t answer questions we want answered? Bank Rossiya, slapped with U.S. sanctions last month, is the "personal bank" of top Russian officials, the U.S. Treasury tells us. Its chief, Yuri Kovalchuk, "has been referred" to as one of President Vladimir Putin´s "cashiers." (Snip)Mr. Putin fears his people taking to the streets. He fears his friends deciding their billions are no longer safe with him in control. He is not immune. Too much running tied to

Running regularly has long been linked to a host of health benefits, including weight control, stress reduction, better blood pressure and cholesterol. However, recent research suggests there may a point of diminishing returns with running. A number of studies have suggested that a "moderate" running regimen -- a total of two to three hours per week, according to one expert -- appears best for longevity, refuting the typical "more is better" mantra for physical activity. The researchers behind the newest study on the issue say people who get either no exercise or high-mileage runners both tend to have shorter lifespans

Voters in North Carolina can be forgiven if they turn off their televisions. In the battle for control of the U.S. Senate, no state has experienced an onslaught of negative advertising as intense as what has been unleashed in the Tar Heel State. The barrage is being fueled by wealthy independent groups from both ends of the political spectrum and reflects the importance that both parties place on winning the seat held by freshman Democrat Kay Hagan. For more than a year, conservative groups have blanketed radio and television with advertisements assaulting Hagan. Americans for Prosperity, which is closely linked to

Further loosening the reins on the role of money in politics, the U.S. Supreme Court today struck down restrictions on the grand total that any person can contribute to all federal candidates for office. Today´s decision left intact the cap of $2,600 per election that a contributor to give to any single candidate for federal office, but it invalidated the separate limit on how much can be contributed to all federal candidates put together — $48,600. The law was challenged by the Republican Party and an Alabama businessman, Shaun McCutcheon, who argued that the contribution ceilings were an unconstitutional restriction on his

Four years ago, Poland was set to become the staging ground for advanced U.S. ballistic missile interceptors. But after the plan collapsed—and seeing defense budgets in the rest of Europe on the decline—Polish political leaders decided they needed their military to fend for itself. And now with an aggressive Russia bearing down on Ukraine, Warsaw is getting even more worried—and prepared. “The world stands on the brink of conflict, the consequences of which are not foreseen,” Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said shortly after Russia’s Feb. 27 invasion of Crimea. Most of all, this means that Poland’s steady military growth—an outlier in Europe—could

The looming wreckage of President Obama’s Mideast peace push could lead to the freedom of a man held captive decades in excess of what justice demands. All the rest looks to be a disaster. Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry are dangling release of Jonathan Pollard, an American sentenced to life in prison in 1987 for spying for Israel, in the hope of pushing the Jewish state to release hundreds of Palestinians convicted of terrorism offenses in the hope of convincing the Palestinians to get with the peace program. The obvious American desperation ran smack into the equally obvious obstructionism of

MANDEVILLE, La. — The conventional wisdom is that the Senate race between three-term Democrat Mary Landrieu and Republican Rep. Bill Cassidy will be about Obamacare. Will Landrieu´s vote for the president´s national health care scheme -- the decisive vote, as Republicans often point out -- finally end a storied Louisiana political career? There´s no doubt Obamacare will play a big role in the campaign. It´s hugely unpopular here in Louisiana — 33 percent approve, 53 percent disapprove in a recent poll — and Landrieu, as much as any other Democrat, is responsible for it. Cassidy and outside conservative groups are pounding

In recent weeks, we examined the Obama administration’s willingness to reverse positions that it had once proudly proclaimed — on whether an individual mandate is necessary, whether the individual mandate is a tax, whether it is important that you can keep your plan or doctor, whether lobbyists should work in a president’s administration, whether a donor should be appointed U.S. ambassador, and so on.(Snip)The evidence before us suggests progressives’ ideal society would be one where they enjoy great power to regulate the lives of others and impose restrictions and limitations they themselves would never accept in their own lives.

Talk about spiking the ball. Speaking in the White House Rose Garden yesterday afternoon, President Obama declared flatly that the Affordable Care Act, which he proudly referred to as ObamaCare, “is doing what it’s supposed to do; it’s working.” The president had reason to be pleased. According to the White House, 7.1 million Americans signed up, slightly more than the Congressional Budget Office had said was necessary for the law to work as planned. Considering the Web-site disaster and all other problems that we’ve seen so far, this represents a significant accomplishment. New York was one of the best-performing states in the nation.

But that´s precisely what´s been charged in California, although with a final plot twist that Hollywood would never imagine. California State senator (and, until last week, candidate for secretary of state) Leland Yee was well-known as an anti-gun activist. Then, last week, he was indicted for, yes, conspiring to smuggle guns and rocket launchers between mobsters and terrorists in exchange for massive bribes. Some highlights, as excerpted by San Francisco Magazine. Yee told an FBI agent that, in exchange for $2 million in cash, he´d fill

Before getting to the speech itself, it’s worth noting a few things. When the Democrats passed and Barack Obama signed Obamacare, the majority opposed it. About 56%, in fact. A majority have consistently opposed that law ever since. The Obama administration touted 7 million sign-ups by March 31 as “success.” When that goal appeared to be unreachable, the administration suggested that maybe 5 or 6 million would be enough. Now, as if by magic, they have their number. Somehow. All along, the administration has touted false numbers of enrollees. All along, the administration has neglected to admit that Obamacare is

A few months back, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius stated for the record that 7 million Obamacare sign-ups by the end of March would constitute success. She was clear about it. But then February came, and February always stinks. It’s just a lousy month. You’re tired of winter, you’re still miles away from spring, and no one was signing up for Obamacare. That 7 million figure looked totally unreachable. So Sebelius does what every other member of the Obama administration does when confronted with inconvenient facts. She lied. A triumphant President Barack Obama declared his signature medical insurance overhaul a success, saying it has made America´s health care system ´a lot better.´ But buried in the 7.1 million enrollments he announced in a heavily staged Rose Garden appearance is a more unsettling reality. Numbers from a RAND Corporation study that has been kept under wraps suggest that barely 858,000 previously uninsured Americans – nowhere near 7.1 million – have paid for new policies and joined the ranks of the insured by Monday night. Others were already insured, including millions who lost coverage when their existing policies were suddenly

A RAND study pours buckets of cold water on the Obama administration’s claims that it has nearly reached 7 million sign-ups for Obamacare. The whole point of Obamacare, supposedly, was to insure the uninsured and bend the cost curve down. Those who had insurance were supposed to be able to keep it. Families were supposed to start saving about $2500 a year. If you believed the Obama administration. Reality, according to RAND‘s study, is that the Obama administration’s 7 million figure is deceptive. Supposing 7 million have actually signed up and paid their first premium — which is not a given,

With Chris Christie in deep trouble, Republican poobahs are reportedly looking to Jeb Bush to save their party in 2016. The former two-term governor of Florida speaks fluent Spanish, is a convert to Catholicism, and has high name recognition. Jeb could raise millions of dollars over night by just saying “yes” to running. Despite all this, there are strong reasons Republicans should say no to him. 1. His last name is poison. Let’s face it, if Jeb Bush had the last name of Something Else he would have already run for president in 2008 or 2012. According to a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll registered voters were asked if they would definitely NOT vote for Jeb Bush and 50 percent said they would not.

The pair spent three years studying the history of the chalice and last week published a book, “The Kings of the Grail,” making their case. The onyx chalice, they explained, was concealed within another antique vessel known as the Chalice of Doña Urruca, which is located in León’s basilica of
