A life worth living: Judge backs wife in fight to keep her husband alive after hospital tried to withhold treatment

| The loving wife of a desperately ill musician yesterday won her fight to force a hospital to keep treating him. Doctors had wanted to withhold potentially lifesaving care from David James, 68. But a senior judge overruled them, saying they had failed to fully credit the importance of his ‘continued existence’. Sitting at the Court of Protection, Mr Justice Jackson said the doctors had undervalued the limited quality of life Mr James could still enjoy. He described the patient’s relationship with his family as ‘of the closest and most meaningful kind’ and this carried ‘great weight’ in his decision.

2. Pray a trusted family member is with him 24/7
3. Stay out of hospitals as much as possible

Have a living will. Discuss these issues with everyone in your family, and your closest friends, and your Dr. If it was me, I wouldn´t want to be re-re-resuscitated if I had another stroke or heart attack. I probably wouldn´t go for dialysis either, but blood pressure treatment? Of course, unless its an extraordinary treatment. At least they didn´t want to withhold food and water.

Absolutely get your treatment choices in writing. A good way to do that is via the "Will to Live" document developed by National Right to Life and downloadable in a document format which complies with each state´s legal specifications:
http://www.nrlc.org/euthanasia/willtolive/index.html
No one needs to tolerate aggressive over-treatment by experimental, "heroic" or burdensome measures not appropriate for an elderly, frail and dying erson. But on the other hand, nobody should be deliberately starved/dehydrated to death under the revolting pretense that --hey presto, add morphine --- and it´s a "care pathway."
Even more importnt than a "will to live" document: you HAVE to have people around you who know what you want and will actively advocate for you. Tell your next of kin. A document --- any document --- is just a piece of paper unless there´s somebody there to fight for it.

As they perused the well-stocked aisles of their local shop, the wealthy residents of Highland Park were charmed by the polite and handsome young man behind the counter. [Snip] Like his great-grandfather Alfred Roberts before him, Mr Thatcher works long shifts while serving as a committed Christian and conservative in his free time. After graduating from Texas A&M University in Chemistry, the subject Lady Thatcher read at Oxford in the 1940s, the 24-year-old now hands out prescriptions along with the snacks, cosmetics and greetings cards on offer. His sister Amanda, meanwhile, also appears to harbour Thatcherite ambitions. Graduating from school

The anti-Thatcher anthem Ding Dong the Witch is Dead has seen a surge in popularity since Baroness Thatcher’s death and looks set to retain a top slot when the Official Chart Show airs on Sunday.[Snip] But the move has found support in some unlikely corners as UKIP leader Nigel Farage and Tory MP Philip Davies, who have both paid glowing tribute to the former leader, said broadcasting the song was the right thing to do. These adorable pictures show Julian Becker and his 165 pound pet Max, the shaggy Newfoundland that never leaves his best friend´s side. Five-year-old Julian´s mother Stasha started taking pictures of the odd couple every day before they got in the family car in Whidbey Island, Washington state, U.S., although both Julian and Max were born in England. With her husband away regularly in his role as a U.S. naval officer, the pictures began as a way of keeping in touch. They have evolved into a charming document of a boy´s love for a four-legged friend he began walking

Jay-Z blasted back today at critics of his and wife´s Beyoncé´s recent trip to Cuba in a new song. The scathing song, ´Open Letter´ calls out the politicians who questioned the legality of the fifth anniversary vacation, which was approved by the Treasury Department, when the rapper says, ´Politicians never did s**t for me, except lie to me, distort history. They wanna give me jail time and a fine. Fine, let me commit a real crime.´ The song also includes lyrics boasting of his friendship with President Obama, adding: ´Obama said, ´Chill you´re going to get me impeached

First they purloin the savings and bank deposits in Laiki and the Bank of Cyprus, including the working funds of the University of Cyprus, and thousands of small firms hanging on by their fingertips. Then they seize three-quarters of the country’s gold reserves, making it ever harder for Cyprus to extricate itself from EMU at a later date. [Snip] Cypriots are learning what it means to be a member of monetary union when things go badly wrong. Harath Andrade tells the BBC´s Ben Wright: "If there was a system in place for immigration my dad wouldn´t have to be facing this struggle right now." Tens of thousands of demonstrators have rallied across the US in a mass call for citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants. The co-ordinated protests were designed to press Congress to act as senators negotiate an immigration reform bill. In Washington DC cheering crowds gathered outside the Capitol, and more than 1,000 demonstrated in Atlanta.[Snip] The push for immigration reform follows an election in which Hispanic voters overwhelmingly supported President Barack Obama and

Analysis of commercially available rice imported into the US has revealed it contains levels of lead far higher than regulations suggest are safe. Some samples exceeded the "provisional total tolerable intake" (PTTI) set by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) by a factor of 120. The report at the American Chemical Society Meeting adds to the already well-known issue of arsenic in rice. The FDA told the BBC it would review the research. Lead is known to be harmful to many organs and the central nervous system.[Snip] Because rice is grown in heavily irrigated conditions, it is more susceptible

One is employed at Labour leader Ed Miliband’s old school and has worked with the youngest and most impressionable pupils there, while the other teaches troubled and vulnerable children.[Snip] Craig Parr, a teacher at Haverstock School in north London--nicknamed ‘Labour’s Eton’--was pictured parading with a sick placard which read: ‘Rejoice. The sequester may have many across the country singing the blues, but for President Obama, it was all about Memphis Soul. Even with the threat of furloughs and government cuts sparked by the sequester, Obama took the time to enjoy a star-studded concert at the White House tonight. The White House celebration of Memphis Soul music in the East Room--which included special guest appearances by Queen Latifah and Justin Timberlake--is likely to rile Obama´s Republican foes. Some conservatives have called on Obama to give up golf, especially since popular public tours of the White House have been canceled because of

In the message he issued along with his budget proposal on Wednesday morning, President Barack Obama said he wants to see 4-year-old children in the United States enrolled in public schools. Obama said America needs to start enrolling 4-year-olds to make sure the children are “better prepared for the demands of the global economy” and to help parents save on "child-care costs." After saying the United States needs to “equip our citizens with the skills and training” to fill jobs in manufacturing, energy and infrastructure, Obama said, “And that has to start at the earliest possible age.”

In 2011, the journalist Mara Hvistendahl published Unnatural Selection: Choosing Boys Over Girls, and the Consequences of a World Full of Men, detailing the societal effects of sex-selective abortions that target women the world over and resulted in the absence of perhaps more than 100 million girls who by now should have been born. But Hvistendahl soon learned the downside to uncovering what many believe to be a shocking trend in human rights offenses: people will want to do something about it. And so she lashed out, declaring that “anti-abortion activists

Is Anthony Weiner completely delusional? Or is he out of his flipping, sex-crazed gourd? Whatever big-busted fantasies crawl around the ex-congressman’s delirious noggin, la Weiner made his next goal as clear as the skin of the wholesome college students he craved: He relishes being Mayor Weiner. Please, shut up this clown. These days, the genitally obsessed Weiner has nothing much to do, except sit in his lavish Manhattan apartment and — the inhumanity! — change the poopy diapers of his 16-month-old son, Jordan. Worse, Weiner is living under a kind of house arrest, sentenced to take extreme grief

Only one of my six children has left New York for economic reasons but the strain of living in this expensive nanny state is weighing heavy on my other five and their families. As a native New Yorker, I´ve seen its middle class population decline over the years due to its neglect of blue collar families which is ironic since this is a Democrat city. With the recent arrests of several local politicians for corruption perhaps New Yorkers will pay more attention to those they put in office. Given their past indifference in local elections this is highly unlikely.
