| Dave Brubeck changed the sound of jazz in profound ways, unexpectedly becoming something of a pop star in the process. Starting in the mid-1950s, in fact, he emerged as a symbol of jazz in America, and well beyond, gracing the cover of Time magazine in 1954 and selling more than a million copies of “Take Five” in 1960. To this day, the puckishly syncopated tune remains one of the most recognizable in jazz, though Brubeck didn’t write it – his alto saxophonist, Paul Desmond, did. Loved his music and saw him a couple of times in NY and CA. Also mentioned Ramsey Lewis and he is another legend. His In Crowd is super.

I probably have more Brubeck in my jazz collection than any other one artist. A true gentleman: soft in word, firm in conviction.
Maybe his greatest gift was the ability to make incredibly complicated music that was still accessible and enjoyable to the average ear. I think I´ll set aside all my Christmas music for the next few days and have a private Brubeck marathon.
Can´t help but think of Pelosi´s idea of an economy "where people could be an artist or a photographer or a writer without worrying about keeping their day job in order to have health insurance."
Compare that to Brubeck´s formula for achieving truly international artistic success:
grow up on a farm, fight a world war, have your music forbidden by your college, play every dive and joint that´ll pay--but still keep family the most important value in your life. And he did.
A long life, well lived Mr. Brubeck. Thank you for more than I can convey.

North Korea’s young leader Kim Jong-un is waiting for United States President Barack Obama to make a phone call to Pyongyang to discuss easing tensions on the Korean peninsula, according to Russia’s news agency Itar-Tass.
