On MSNBC last night Bob Costas tried to clarify his remarks on gun control in an interview with host Lawrence O’Donnell, but moved into more controversial territory regarding the right to own guns in America. Costas was defensive about his brief discussion of guns in the Sunday Night Football broadcast where he read aloud a portion of a controversial column by sportswriter Jason Whitlock about gun control. Costas insisted that he wasn’t talking about the Second Amendment, but rather the “gun culture” in America. “It demonstrates itself in the Wild West, Dirty Harry mentality
Comments: He just keeps digging that hole deeper. He actually believes that if there were armed people in the theater in Aurora it wouldn´t have made a difference? What an incredibly moronic statement. All the body armor in the world couldn´t have protected him from a shot in the head.
American history is undoubtedly tied to the influence of guns, from our Independence, to our Constitution, to any sense of defense of our liberties from both domestic and international threats.
Costas is right in that we are existentially a gun culture, just as we used to be a free enterprise meritocracy, but like many liberals he along with the rest of the elite ruling/influence class have determined they know better than you and wish to regulate everything that built our successes right out of existence.
You have to wonder if these liberals ever try to really think through their ideas. Including probable and possible long term consequences. Or do they just voice whatever thought pops into their heads, thinking the idea is worthy of serious consideration for no other reason than their own sense of self importance?
Dirty Harry is a white guy. Does that mean it´s racist when a black guy commits murder and suicide? How about the gang-banger mentality in our urban warrens? I bet Costas would be horrified if someone had said that!
...I think #12 has his thinking cap on. Sports reporters are libs like news reporters. They are cowards. In the case of football, they refuse to even look at the thug gangsta culture permeating the sport. My goodness, just look in the stands of any football game. They refuse to investigate the concussion thing. They refuse to report anything which might jeapordize their access to their gravy train. They knew about the steroids in baseball. They knew about Tiger Woods philandering. Bob is trying to deflect attention away from the root problem with the liberal dodge of gun laws because he knows that story will be proliferated and not hurt his access to the locker room.
There is a Facebook posting of an NBC Sports PR photo of Bob Costas with O.J. Simpson. O.J. did not use a gun to kill two people, yet Lil Bob never called for knife control, especially not on an NBC sports broadcast.
Progressives are sore winners, and we will be getting more empty chair references from these empty suits
No, what it means is that metrosexuals like Bobby here want to control your life. Works at cocktail parties in Manhattan. I see the despicable Peter King agreed with him in his Sports Illustrated football column. Time to unsubscribe SI and sell its owner´s (Time Warner) stock.
Costas. I know what you´re thinking. "Did Dirty Harry fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, Costas, in all this excitement Dirty Harry kind of lost track himself. But being as that was a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, Costas, you´ve got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, Costas?
FTA: "people who actually believe that if a number of people were armed in the theater in Aurora, they would have been able to take down this nut-job in body armor and military style artillery,” Costa does not have even the basic facts straight. The loon in Colorado in the theater was NOT wearing any body armor, only the stupid press thought that a "tactical vest" is armor, when it is just a vest with a lot of pockets and attach points.
I guarantee one or two citizens firing back at this violent lunatic would have stopped that violence with much less death and injury than actually occurred. That Costa doesn´t get this shows that he is a cowardly fool. I know many average skilled shooters that could have made the difference on that night. No superhuman skills required.
When Costas talks about Wild West, Dirty Harry I thought he was talking about Dirty Harry Reid. If you look at a picture of Harry Reid with those small spectacles he wears he looks just like some weaselly old creepy banker from the Old West.
Nobody wants to talk about the Appalachian Law School shooting in Virginia in 2002. The shooter was subdued by several students and a staffer who went out to their cars and retrieved...wait for it...their personally-owned legal firearms.
It isn´t a "wild west or dirty Harry culture" that we have or that is the problem. The problem is the ghetto THUG gangster culture that is glorified on TV, movies, music, Rap and Hip Hop, and everywhere else these days.
AIKEN, S.C. — President Obama has reached new lows in his desperate attempt to salvage the Affordable Care Act. With the website still ineffective and Americans losing trust and confidence in his ability to govern, he has run out of viable options. Even the normally reliable strategy of demonizing opponents will not work this time; Republicans have stepped back and let the law self-destruct as they predicted. Democrats broke the healthcare system. They own it. Obama’s last desperate option is a patronizing appeal to the same millennials who marched down the streets chanting, “Yes, we can” in 2008. The new Obamacare
Rep. Jared Polis said Friday the key problem with health care right now is that illegal immigrants aren’t included in Obamacare, and said part of the solution is to pass a bill granting them citizenship rights. The House is debating a GOP-written bill that would allow Americans to keep their health plans that have been canceled under Obamacare, but Mr. Polis, a Colorado Democrat, said the chamber should instead be looking at ways to make sure everyone in the country is covered by the Affordable Care Act — including illegal immigrants. “American citizens are essentially being forced to pay for
Secret Service agents and managers have engaged in sexual misconduct and other improprieties across a span of 17 countries in recent years, according to accounts given by whistleblowers to the Senate committee that oversees the department. Sen. Ronald H. Johnson (Wis.), ranking Republican on a Homeland Security subcommittee, said Thursday that the accounts directly contradict repeated assertions by Secret Service leaders that the elite agency does not foster or tolerate sexually improper behavior. The allegations come in the wake of a prostitution scandal last year in Cartagena, Colombia, that roiled the Secret Service and prompted numerous reviews of its male-dominated culture.
“I think that there is an issue with what people told the president, and I think that there is an instinct to tell the president what he wants to hear,” the president’s former senior adviser said. One of the panel says to Axelrod, “You didn’t do that.” “Right, and now I’m out of [Obama´s] government,” Axelrod tellingly shoots back. “No. No, I didn’t do that. But in part I didn’t do that because I have a long history with him. I started with him when he was just back from law school in 1992. So we had a long relationship
The House on Friday advanced legislation aimed at letting millions of people keep health insurance plans that are scheduled to be canceled under ObamaCare. Members approved a rule for the Keep Your Health Plan Act, H.R. 3350, in a 228-189 vote. The rule won the support of just six Democrats, as several Democrats rejected it is another Republican attempt to undermine ObamaCare. The bill from Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich.) — which does have four Democratic cosponsors on it — would allow insurance companies to continue offering soon-to-be canceled plans in perpetuity. Republicans said it´s needed to permanently fix the problem,
Almost three months before the botched launch of HealthCare.gov, a U.S. health official expressed frustration with a main contractor working on the website, fearing quality assurance issues could "crash the plane at take-off," according to government documents obtained by Reuters. The documents were released by Republican investigators with the House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee. Republican lawmakers, who have consistently sought to undermine President Barack Obama´s signature health system overhaul, are probing the law´s disastrous rollout. Two series of internal emails in July between officials at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), including HealthCare.gov project manager Henry Chao, describe
Lawmakers are urging Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Gina McCarthy and the White House to put the brakes on rulemaking that would drastically expand the agency’s jurisdiction under the Clean Water Act. The redefinition of “waters of the United States” would include all ponds, lakes, wetlands and natural or manmade streams that have any effect on downstream navigable waters — whether on public lands or private property. “Based on EPA’s draft scientific report, ‘Connectivity of Streams and Wetlands to Downstream Waters,’ and the agency’s commitment to rely on this report during the rulemaking process, we are concerned that EPA’s final rule may in
President Obama has appointed Debo Adegbile to replace Tom Perez as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights. Perez was confirmed to be Secretary of Labor without a single Republican vote. Adegbile hails from the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, an organization that has pushed a radical racial agenda including attacks on election integrity measures, opposition to criminal background checks for hiring, and racial hiring quotas for state and local governments. Here is a brief Adegbile filed on behalf of the “Black Student Alliance” arguing that a white applicant was properly denied admission to the University of Texas Law School because she was
Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) said on Thursday that President Barack Obama´s oft-repeated pledge that under Obamacare people would be allowed to keep their health care plans if they liked them was “absolutely a fact”--so long as the plans “met the standards” set by Obamacare, that is. CNSNews.com asked Boxer: “After President Obama signed the ACA he said that if you like your health care plan you will keep it. No one can take that away from you.” “I think everyone knows he said that,” Boxer said, speaking shortly before Obama announced that he would let insurance companies renew policies for existing
Let the record show that at 7:17 AM ET on November 15, 2013, a leading member of the MSM flatly declared that a leading Republican was "right" in rejecting an Obama proposal, and what´s more, that "the White House knows it." That MSM equivalent of Haley´s Comet transpired on today´s Morning Joe. A clip had been played of John Boehner rejecting the proposal President Obama offered during his press conference yesterday that would permit healthcare insurers not to cancel non-complying policies. Boehner said he was "highly skeptical" that President Obama "can do this administratively." Commenting on it, Chuck Todd said of
“What starts twisted stays twisted” Mitt Romney said on CBS This Morning on Friday. When asked by CBS host Charlie Rose about the problems associated with the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, Romney said that the website was not the president’s problem. “It’s dishonesty,” he said. “The real problem that the president has is a broken promise,” Romney told Rose. “That’s, of course, what’s really striking at the heart of his term.” “When the systems are working, people will still lose, and already have, millions of people losing their insurance they were promised they would not,” he continued. “And you think the
Because promoting a book allows you to break cable news norms, MSNBC host Joe Scarborough dropped by Fox & Friends to discuss the fate of the Republican Party. Scarborough joined hosts Steve Doocy and Elisabeth Hasselbeck on the curvy couch, telling them he was in the building because going on the “mothership” Fox helps “sell books” to Republicans. Doocy played coy and suggested Scarborough was referring to Fox’s “biggest audience in cable news,” and not its conservative-leaning viewership. The Morning Joe host offered up his book’s advice for Republicans to get back to winning elections: Look to Dwight Eisenhower and
President Obama announces today that he supports a “fix” for Obamacare that would allow some Americans to keep the healthcare plans they already had for an additional year. That was already built into the Affordable Care Act aka Obamacare law. It’s not an actual change to anything, it’s just an attempt to get out ahead of the bills that Republican Fred Upton and Democrat Mary Landrieu are sponsoring in the House and Senate that would legislatively “fix” Obamacare. It’s an exercise in blame-shifting, and an abdication of leadership. As news of the plan leaked, skepticism spread.(Snip for tweets)Barack Obama’s credibility
To paraphrase Oscar Wilde, you’d have to have a heart of stone not to laugh at the unraveling of Obamacare. First, the obligatory caveats. It is no laughing matter that millions of Americans’ lives have been thrown into anxious chaos as they lose their health insurance, their doctors, their money, or all three. Nor is it particularly amusing to think of the incredible waste of time and tax dollars that has gone into Obamacare’s construction. And the still-unfolding violence that this misbegotten legislation will visit on the economy and our liberties is not funny either. This very magazine has been downright
In his 2007 biography of Barack Obama, Obama: From Promise to Power, Chicago Tribune reporter David Mendell described the exchange he had with then-Illinois state Sen. Barack Obama just minutes before he delivered the keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston: After Obama and I slipped through a security checkpoint and he momentarily broke free from the entourage, I sidled up to him and told him that he seemed to be impressing many people of influence in this rarefied atmosphere. Obama, his gaze fixed directly ahead, never broke his stride. “I´m LeBron, baby,” he replied, referring to LeBron
Oprah Winfrey, one of the most powerful women in the world, declared she would not be stripping off her lingerie to get ‘buck naked’ on screen. The billionaire TV tsarina and occasional actress was speaking to me about her role in director Lee Daniels’s movie The Butler, in which she plays Gloria, wife of a White House butler played by Forest Whitaker. Gloria becomes bored with her middle-class life while her husband’s off looking after ‘that other family in the White House’. Oprah said that after a while Gloria starts to drink, and fools around with a neighbour, played by
On Wednesday, Senator Mark Udall (D-CO) introduced a bill in the Senate that would allow Americans to keep their health insurance plans for a limit of two years. “I have repeatedly said that the Affordable Care Act isn’t perfect,” Udall said, “and it will need to be improved as it is implemented.” Udall already wants to push off the open enrollment deadline on the Obamacare health exchanges until the end of May. But Udall’s plan isn’t the only one in the offing. Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA) has introduced the “Keeping the Affordable Care Act Promise Act,” co-sponsored by Sens. Dianne
In a recent interview with BBC News, Oprah Winfrey said that President Obama is disrespected because he is an African-American. "There’s a level of disrespect for the office that occurs. And that occurs in some cases and maybe even many cases because he’s African-American," Winfrey said. "There’s no question about that, and it’s the kind of thing nobody ever says but everybody’s thinking it." Speaking with the BBC´s Will Gompertz in the UK to promote "The Butler," Winfrey also spoke to the global issue of racism. "It´s gotten better. Are there still places where people are terrorized because of the color of their
“Even if it takes a change to the law, the president should honor the commitment the federal government made to those people and let them keep what they got.” — Bill Clinton, Nov. 12 So the former president asserts that the current president continues to dishonor his “you like your plan, you can keep your plan” pledge. And calls for the Affordable Care Act to be changed, despite furious White House resistance to the very idea. Coming from the dean of the Democratic Party, this one line marked the breaching of the dam. It legitimized the brewing rebellion of panicked
On Thursday, President Obama conducted the “Springtime for Hitler” of press conferences. He came out at noon and proceeded to blather his way through an hour of self-justifications and evasions and apologies and complaints. And as he went on, you could almost see America reacting as the audience in “The Producers” did to the happy-talk number about Adolf romping at his retreat in Berchtesgaden — with gaped-mouth astonishment. First, he said he had not been “informed directly that the Web site would not be working.” What on earth does that mean? Was he somehow informed indirectly? In an affronted tone, the president
Desperate times call for desperate measures, so on Thursday one desperate President, Barack Obama, attempted to sell the idea that he had found a way to keep his Obamacare pledge: “If you like your insurance plan, you can keep it.” This exuberantly delivered and oft-repeated sales pitch for the program that has dominated his presidency “ended up not being accurate,” as Obama mincingly put it. He had no choice — not when health insurers complying with his regulations have canceled policies for millions of Americans. Not when those newly uninsured cannot buy coverage using Obama’s botched website. Not when congressional Democrats are panicking
The current troubles of the Obama presidency can be read back into its beginnings. Rule by personal charisma has met its proper fate. The spell has been broken, and the magician stands exposed. We need no pollsters to tell us of the loss of faith in Mr. Obama´s policies—and, more significantly, in the man himself. Charisma is like that. Crowds come together and they project their needs onto an imagined redeemer. The redeemer leaves the crowd to its imagination: For as long as the charismatic moment lasts—a year, an era—the redeemer is above and beyond judgment. He glides through crises,
Something is seriously wrong with conservatism. Since Ronald Reagan’s last year in office, Republicans have only twice won a majority of votes cast for president—both times with a George Bush atop the ticket. And neither Bush was a conservative. For 25 years, something has prevented conservatives from winning the White House and prevented the Republicans who do win from governing as conservatives. What could it be? The Tea Party has an answer: RINOs—liberal Republicans in Name Only—have sabotaged the right, most recently in October when they collaborated with Democrats to raise the debt ceiling and end the government shutdown. Once RINOs are
President Obama’s former spiritual advisor Joshua DuBois joined The O’Reilly Factor to talk about his new book, “The President´s Devotional: Daily Readings That Inspired Obama.” He told Bill O’Reilly, “The president’s a committed Christian and his faith is a really important part of his life. Every single morning for the last six years he’s woken up and read these devotionals to try grow closer to God and closer to his neighbors as well.” DuBois recalled going with the president to visit Reverend Billy Graham. “He doesn’t wear this stuff on his sleeve. That’s not the kind guy he is, but he
