"Homeless man" not homeless
-- lives in rent-free apartment

CBS News, by Alex Sundby

Original Article

Posted By:Drive, 12/4/2012 3:43:22 PM

The barefoot homeless man who was photographed being given a pair of winter boots by a New York City police officer on a cold November night has actually been living rent-free in an apartment since late last year, the city said Tuesday. Homeless Services Commissioner Seth Diamond had no doubt that the man captured in a tourist´s picture receiving the boots from NYPD Officer Larry DePrimo was the same Jeffrey Hillman who had been on the city agency´s radar for a while. "We´re sure because we´ve had such a sustained engagement with him for so many years," Diamond said.

So many ´homeless´ are actually drug users or people with serious mental illness. Do we really believe we help them by letting them wander around and risk harming themselves or others? We used to hospitalize them until the human-rights busybodies decided we were interfering with their ´lifestyle´ choices. That´s real compassion./s

Absolutely amazing how many people are working so hard to make sure that the young policeman´s incredibly generous and compassionate gesture is belittled.

Would that the press would find background on some of their own heroes.

Some of these people - I believe his family said that he is a longtime alcoholic - must be out on the street and on the move all the time. Restless. They cannot stand to be alone with themselves.

His family recognized him in the photo. He has had an open invitation to live with them for some time, but no interest. He is our burden until he drinks himself to death, and he will.

US autism estimate

The government’s estimate of autism has moved up again to 1 in 68 U.S. children, a 30 percent increase in two years. But health officials say the new number may not mean autism is more common. Much of the increase is believed to be from a cultural and medical shift, with doctors diagnosing autism more frequently, especially in children with milder problems. “We can’t dismiss the numbers. But we can’t interpret it to mean more people are getting the disorder,” said Marisela Huerta, a psychologist at the New York-Presbyterian Center for Autism and the Developing Brain in suburban White Plains, N.Y.

The state with the most segregated public schools is New York. Other states with exceptionally segregated schools include California, Illinois and Michigan. These findings come from a longitudinal study of enrollment figures conducted by the Civil Rights Project at the University of California at Los Angeles, The Associated Press reports. The period studied was 1998 through 2010. New York, California, Illinois and Michigan are traditionally among the most reliably Democratic states in the union, as an interactive 2012 map created by Slate shows.

A law firm hired by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Thursday that the governor was not involved in a plot to create gridlock near a major bridge as part of a political retribution scheme. The taxpayer-funded report released by former federal prosecutor Randy Mastro relies on interviews with Christie and other officials in his administration and 250,000 documents, many of them emails and text messages. "We found that Gov. Christie had no knowledge beforehand of this George Washington Bridge realignment idea," Mastro said at a news conference. His report comes out ahead of any results from independent investigations by federal prosecutors and

Russian forces completed their take over of the Ukrainian navy’s assets in Crimea with the storming of the minesweeper Cherkessy. The Ukrainian navy has been reduced to only 10 vessels, with the other 51 it held at the beginning of this month, including its only submarine, now flying the Russian flag. But of all the Ukrainian military assets Russia has seized during the annexation, none is quite as unusual as the combat dolphin program. U.S. President Barack Obama and Pope Francis met Thursday for the first time at Vatican City, offering a chance for a reset of sorts between the administration and Catholic leadership following years of strained relations. The two world leaders greeted each other with a smile and a handshake, and posed for pictures before sitting down across a table from each other. The goal of the meeting: Focus on areas where two of the world´s most influential men agree and gently tread ground where they differ. The President and the Pontiff will, as the White House said in a statement, focus on "shared commitment

The horrific effect that drugs can have on addicts have been highlighted in a series of disturbing pictures and video. The photographs show American users of cocaine, heroin, oxy-codone and crystal meth in various stages of addiction. The before shots all show healthy-looking individuals prior to their becoming involved in substance abuse. The after shots show the same faces with terrible, blotchy skin, gaunt and hardened features, wrinkled skin and wild eyes. The campaign was launched by Rehabs.com, the organisation that ran the very successful Faces Of Meth campaign in 2012, which showed the devastating impact of meth addiction. Late on Tuesday night, the White House “decided to give extra time” to prospective Affordable Care Act enrollees. At least, that’s how The Washington Post put it, though it is unlikely that the changes they made to the ACA’s online infrastructure was the result of a spur–of–the–moment decision. Administration officials maintain that they are simply giving consumers who may be interested in insurance, but have not yet selected or paid for coverage, an extra two weeks to complete the arduous enrollment process. They add that this extension is only available to those who have begun the process of enrollment by March

As part of its plan to reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, the Obama administration is targeting the dairy industry to reduce methane emissions in their operations. This comes despite falling methane emission levels across the economy since 1990. The White House has proposed cutting methane emissions from the dairy industry by 25 percent by 2020. Although U.S. agriculture only accounts for about 9 percent of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, it makes up a sizeable portion of methane emissions — which is a very potent greenhouse gas. Some of these methane emissions come from

The shocker in a survey by PayScale, a research firm that focuses on compensation, is that there are schools where students would have been better off not attending. Why? The 20-year net return on their college investment amounts to a financial loss, even when financial aid is included. Taking the time to get and spend money on a degree, in short, means you might actually find yourself in a financial hole. The survey may add to parents' doubts about

When atheist director and co-writer Darren Aronofsky promised that his epic "Noah" would be "the least biblical film ever made," that was not hyperbole. "Noah" is a brilliant, compelling, beautifully-mounted, beautifully-acted piece of storytelling conceived for the sinister purpose of leading people to believe that Christianity and Judaism are something they are not. (Snip) What does matter, though, is The Message. The Message is everything. And this is where Aronofsky is the snake in the garden. Using a $135 million, he and Paramount have brilliantly and deviously disguised the Pagan god Gaia as the God of the Old Testament … as THE God.
