“My administration,” President Obama wrote on his first day in office, “is committed to creating an unprecedented level of openness in government.” Those were strong and hopeful words. Four years later, it is becoming more and more clear that they were just words. On Monday afternoon, open-government advocates assembled in a congressional hearing room to ponder what had become of the Obama administration’s lofty vows of transparency. “It’s been a really tough slog,” said Anne Weismann of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. “The lack of effective leadership in the
Obama´s anything and everything "words" in all politician appears any all be just "words" to impress the other liberal "journalists" and all the other liberals who also appear to exist with Obama in the "la-la-land".

The fundamental problem is that liberals wish to control others while conservatives wish to be left alone. In their pursuit of control, liberals will do anything necessary including destroying the very thing they claim to love. Conservatives accept that not all results will be desire able, but also know that the preservation of opportunities is more important than the insurance of equal outcomes. Ultimately, the pursuit of equal outcomes stifles all economic innovation and assures the demise of those who try to assert control over all they survey. Mr. Obama is just the current manifestation of the progressive demigod.

FTA "The Obama administration’s high level of opacity, though typical of modern presidencies, is troubling precisely because the president was so clear about his determination to do things differently. "
Is Milbank dumb, or is he lying? How did all of us idiot rubes in the red states know that Obama was lying all along? Is Milbank´s next column going to lament that this anti war President runs a kill list out of the WH and kills thousands of innocent Pakistanis with drones?
I really can´t tell if Milbank is being disingenuous here.
Where were you when we needed you, doofus? Wake up and smell the Starbucks. We´ve known from the get-go that this loser would wreck the country; your job is to see that before the rest of us do. Meanwhile, you sucked your thumb and fawned all over Fauxbama. Now we´re all reaping the whirlwind.
The Obama administration’s high level of opacity...is troubling precisely because the president was so clear about his determination to do things differently. As recently as early last year, some open-government advocates were still hopeful, presenting Obama with an anti-secrecy award at the White House. But even then, there were signs of trouble: The award presentation wasn’t on his schedule and was closed to reporters.
Psst! After 4 years of broken promises and "opacity", you´re just now figuring out that this POTUS and his entire Administration lie through their teeth with zero intentions of keeping any promises they make?
Well, at least Dana is awakening from his diversity-induced slumber, but since he writes "more in pain than in anger", the first move Obama makes to make Dana feel good again will be swallowed without chewing.
No whining is acceptable from you, Dana, nor any other journalists who .... .... have applauded Obama in all things. .... have printed stories of glory about The Won. .... have covered up truth about Obama, both past and present. .... have openly performed acts of favoritism for Obama (think Candy Crowley) .... have pushed and praised ObamaCare. .... have accused and continue to accuse Caucasians who oppose Obama, Holder or Rice of being racist ... with the exception of Hillary, that is.
You are helpless to do anything because Obama´s handler bought and paid for you and your kind. .... You made your choices. Now, you get to live with them.
I´m not going to bother to read past the lead paragraph. Having been in this salon since the beginning, I´ve seen Dana get off of his leftist knees a few times for a few paragraphs only to sink back down and assume the position in order to spew another round of delusional DNC propaganda.
Next time America, think twice before casting your vote for an: (1) Undocumented professional street agitator (2) Who has never held a regular job or had to meet a payroll (3) Never served a day in military uniform (4) Carries a two-by-four chip on his shoulder (5) Associates with notorious domestic terrorists, international gangsters, racial racketeers, communists, radical Islamic leaders and run-of-the-mill Hollywood lowlifes (6) Supports unlimited abortion, to include partial-birth abortion and infanticide (7) Hates America´s Judeo-Christian Civilization and (8) Can´t figure out if he is black or white.
Meanwhile, WAPO is losing money at 24% less revenue per quarter than the previous quarter, quarter after quarter. Their flagship mag, NEWSWEEK, will cease publication as a hardcopy after Christmas. Their loyal subscribers are still drinking the Kool-aid, but those numbers are dropping. Not that WAPO will ever print unbiased ´news.´ They´d rather jump off the cliff. Twinkiefication.
This is just a wussy Lib trying to be objective for a second or two. They are just as disingenuous as our liar-in-chief. Every once in a while one of them opens the door of the insane assylum to see if we are paying any attention and then they come up with something that makes us all wonder if they are starting to get it. Stop falling for it.
FTA: The Obama administration has, to its credit, made progress in a few areas: releasing more of the White House visitor logs, disseminating more information about nuclear weapons, disclosing more about intelligence spending, and declassifying more historical records.
The records of who visited the White House to create Obamacare have not been released nor have the topics listed for their meetings. It also turns out that those small changes made have caused officials to meet outside the White House and use personal E-mail instead of office E-mail. The only real transparency has been with historical documents found that make the Bush administration look bad. And the dissemination of information of nuclear weapons used to be called treason not openness.
Altho he has obviously always been a reliable pro-Dem cheerleader, and as such has faithfully supported 0, I think Milbank has always preferred Hillary! between the two. So an occasional article like this will come out, it´s really no big deal, as other posters have noted.
Anyone remember during the 2008 democrat primaries the shock that the MSM diplayed when they realized that the Clintons DO LIE??
Same thing here....... We, on the right, have been screaming this for four years only be be tut tutted by the press.
Im past believing that the press will ever get a clue. Im past believing that the voting electorate will ever pull it´s collective head from that dark place, and Im past believing that the American Republic can be saved. At this point, I´m just wondering how long it will take before states start spinning off to save themselves.
I still never heard neither from repubics or you, Luciannites for that matter, that we are in dire NEED of conservative mainstream media! The conservative websites (read by conservatives and conservative-haters only) will NOT do the job of educating America on what is going on in our country. I believe that it would be much cheaper to buy local newspapers and TV stations than wait till ALL Americans will find out what the commies/totalitarians mean to our well being. And then again, what might come out of it? Another russia or china, where there are only 2 classes of people: nomenclature bureaucrats and slaves! So, wake up and put pressure on remaining sane conservatives to stand up to lefties with conservative mainstream media!
Does Milbank really believe that a man who spends a fortune to hide his past really means it when he promises a transparent administration? No, Dana willingly suspended disbelief. Now he blames Obama for not living up to his promises. Sorry Dana, the shame is not on Obama. He was just doing what he does – lie – lie about everything. The shame is on you for being gullible and failing to hew to the fundamental duty of the journalist – a healthy skepticism. And once you have broken faith with your readers with that breach of duty, there is no getting it back.
There was a segment this morning on Fox and Friends about why seniors fall for scams. I´m not convinced the research described is believable with regard to seniors, but it sure does apply to that ´special´ group known as liberals. They routinely fall for any program leftists propose, no matter how outlandish, every time and without reservation. Then when it all goes south they wonder why, but still think it should have worked and just needs to be fixed. You watch, when it finally dawns on these bozos that obamacare cannot possibly work, the libs will not even consider scrapping it. No, they will try to fix it.
Former President Bill Clinton, who prodded President Obama last month to keep his promises on Obamacare, said Tuesday that the political damage for Democrats from the flawed law will be “minimal.” “I believe that if the computer problems are all fixed, and it’s up and running by — and healthy in the next several weeks, I think that the damage will be minimal,” Mr. Clinton told interviewer Jorge Ramos of Fusion. “It’s getting better. I think it’ll be fixed by — in the next few weeks. If it’s worked through, I think within four or five months people will be
Sen. Marco Rubio is making a push this week to burnish his foreign policy credentials and establish gravitas on the world stage ahead of a possible 2016 presidential run, traveling to London to deliver a major policy address and meet British leaders. At a time of vigorous debate within the Republican Party about the United States’ global role, the first-term senator from Florida is articulating a worldview that places him neatly between the GOP’s tea-party-led isolationist wing and its more established interventionist wing. Speaking at the Chatham House think tank in London on Tuesday, Rubio paid homage to the “special
President Obama on Tuesday embarked on the difficult task of persuading Americans to reconsider his landmark health-care law after its botched launch, imploring people to sign up as part of a major push to publicize the benefits of the Affordable Care Act. Republicans immediately lampooned the effort — coming more than three years after passage of the law and two months after its disastrous rollout — and conservative activists vowed to wage a counterassault publicizing the law’s downsides. But Obama and his Democratic allies expressed confidence that they were finally turning the corner after severe technical issues hobbled HealthCare.gov, the
BEIRUT — A surge of diplomacy and an outburst of violence in the days since world powers reached a deal with Iran illustrate both the promise and the peril of what could be the start of a more peaceful era in the Middle East — or the beginning of a new round of bloodletting. The announcement of the six-month accord on Iran’s nuclear program, hailed by President Obama as an opportunity to reverse decades of hostility between Washington and Tehran, has quickly been followed by indications of the deal’s potential to unlock other regional conflicts. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad
President Obama has yet to make good on the administration´s promises that he would sign up for health insurance on the new government exchanges, the White House acknowledged on Monday. White House press secretary Jay Carney said that Obama has not signed up for Obamacare and that he did have a reason for the delay. A reporter pressed Carney on whether the White House would make it an open-press event if and when Obama does enroll. “I´ll get back to you,” Carney replied. Shortly after Obama signed the new health care law in March 2010, a White House official said
U.S. military authorities dispatched the first of six top-tech submarine-hunting jets to its Okinawa post near the disputed East China Sea, a move sure to ratchet up tensions among China and the United States. The Navy plans to send in a total of six P-8 Poseidon patrol craft, aimed at bolstering the United States’ ability to root out submarines in the area, Reuters reported. The deployment was planned months ago, but nonetheless comes as China declared an air defense zone above islands that it’s fighting Japan to control. President Obama, in response to the declaration, flew in two B-52 bombers
On Cyber Monday, millions of Americans flock to popular websites such as Amazon.com to begin holiday shopping — and most do so without encountering any technical problems or glitches. Those visiting HealthCare.Gov, however, still are experiencing delays, a fact that demonstrates how the private sector simply is better than the government when it comes to building a functional website, according to the White House. “What is absolutely the case is the private sector does some things very well and better than the government can, and running effective websites may be one of them, is one of them,” White House press
The enrollment records for a significant portion of the Americans who have chosen health plans through the online federal insurance marketplace contain errors — generated by the computer system — that mean they might not get the coverage they’re expecting next month. The errors affect roughly one-third of the people who have signed up for health plans, according to two government and health-care industry officials. The White House disputed the figure but declined to provide its own. The mistakes include failure to notify insurers about new customers, duplicate enrollments or cancellation notices for the same person, incorrect information about family
These have been tough times for the Obammysoxers of the US media. So many mean-spirited right-wing extremists want to blow up out of all proportion one itsy-bitsy website and a few million bad-apple health insurance cancelations. But fortunately there are lots more important things for the expensively credentialed news journalist to cover. Hence the Associated Press’s hold-the-front-page news on five NEW things you never knew about President Obama! Number One: He sings in the bathroom! Number Two: The mother of a Pakistani roommate taught him to cook “an exciting lentil dish known as daal”! Number Three: He once got a
Could the only thing more difficult than signing up for Obamacare be canceling it? Lara Imler, an Anchorage-based hairstylist, managed to enroll in Obamacare, but problems with her application — her new insurer didn’t have it and nobody she reached on the HealthCare.gov hotline could help her figure out why; she also discovered that the exchange under-calculated the subsidy she was supposed to receive by $50 — made her want to cancel her enrollment. “If you look at my profile on the website it shows my full subsidy, but it says I’m only using part of it,” Imler told Alaska Public Radio.
The generic Congressional ballot is a pretty good proxy for the parties’ standing with voters. It is surprisingly volatile: you might expect that preferences for one party over the other would change slowly, over generations, but in fact the generic ballot number is quite sensitive to the news cycle. That said, the normal state of the generic ballot question is for Democrats to lead. Equality in the generic ballot generally translates into a big year for Republicans. So when Republicans pulled even or took a slight lead in generic preference polling a week ago, wiping out the big lead the
Hm. In newly published findings that challenge earlier research, Dalton Conley of New York University and Emily Rauscher of the University of Kansas found that having more daughters than sons and having a daughter first “significantly reduces the likelihood of Democratic identification and significantly increases the strength of Republican Party identification.” Not only is the daughter effect statistically significant, it’s substantively large. They found that overall, “compared to those with no daughters, parents with all daughters are 14% less likely to identify as a Democrat….[and] 11% more likely to identify as a Republican than parents with no daughters,” they write
Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Wash.) said on MSNBC’s “PoliticsNation” Wednesday that when Jesus fed five thousand people with five loaves of bread and two fish, “he didn’t charge food stamps.” “When Jesus had those five loaves and two fishes, he didn´t charge food stamps. He didn´t ask anybody how much money they had. He fed them because they were hungry, and that´s really where we ought to be,” McDermott said in response to Republican critics of the SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). In September, the House approved a plan by Republicans to cut $39 billion in food stamps over the next
The nation’s view of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, colored by the horrific Benghazi assassination of the U.S. ambassador to Libya on her watch, has suddenly turned upside down, with more now holding an unfavorable opinion of the likely 2016 presidential candidate. A new YouGov/Economist poll found Clinton, whose approval ratings have typically been sky high, with an unfavorable rating of 48 percent, more than the 46 percent who have a favorable opinion of her. The YouGov pollsters said that the change in American attitudes toward Clinton "suggests that negative press surrounding the tragic
President Obama will cast growing income inequality and a decline in economic mobility as a “fundamental threat to the American dream” during a speech Wednesday in Washington. The speech will serve as an early preview for next year’s State of the Union address, according to a White House official, who said Obama would focus much of his energy over the next three years on the issue. “The decisions we make over the next few years will determine whether or not our children will grow up in an America where, if you work hard, you can get ahead,” the official said.
Bill Clinton, the cliché goes, was the first black president, no matter his skin color. That being the case, Barack Obama is not the first black president, or the first African-American president, if you prefer, but the first hippie president. Clinton’s southern background and lifestyle were indeed more typically black, just as Obama’s was more typically hippie. And we’re not just talking about the “Choom gang” here, scarfing “Maui Wowie” on the sands of Oahu. We’re talking about all of it, the whole multi-culti-missing-white-mother-vanished-Kenyan-father-anti-imperialist-America-is-always-the-enemy-and-don’t-you-forget-it-nine-yards. And like most hippie culture as I knew and experienced it, it wasn’t about “peace and love.” Not
During a presentation at the White House in which President Barack Obama touted the benefits of the Affordable Care Act, the president declared that his signature health care reform law was not going to be repealed. This assertion led his administration members, his staff, and audience members to rise from their seats and give the president a standing ovation. Obama said that ACA opponents’ alternative to the health care reform law is to champion repeal and going back to the health care delivery system status quo ante. He specifically cited Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) who he said was asked directly for
A woman has revealed how difficult it is to eat healthily and stay full when living off an average food stamp budget. Melinda Moulton, from Huntington, Vermont, was one of 200 people to take part in the 3Squares Challenge, which saw her living for a week on just $36 worth of food, or around $1.71 a meal. Opting to try and eat as healthily as possible, Ms Moulton resorted to cheap foods like yogurt for breakfast, two handfuls of peanuts for lunch and lentil stew for dinner, all of which left her unsatisfied.´I don´t know how people do it,´ said
Good stuff from Jonathan Turley at today’s House hearing on executive power, although I regret that I couldn’t find a more user-friendly format for you to watch. There’s no compilation clip; you’ll have to make do with the C-SPAN embed by fast-forwarding to the time cues I give you and being patient while the vid buffers (and buffers, and buffers).(Snip)That brings us to point two: Even if Congress can’t stop Obama, the courts can. The problem there, though, says Turley, is that O and the DOJ have argued successfully in many cases that no one has standing to sue him
CNN host wondered out loud on his show this evening whether the physically unfit Chris Christie could follow the "perfect physical specimen" Barack Obama into the White House: "After the perfect Barack Obama, who´s a perfect physical specimen to many people´s eyes, does it matter?" Morgan asked his guest. "Or is actually somebody very different, someone who´s much more of a regular kind of guy who likes cheeseburgers and beer, but appears to be a straight talker, somebody perhaps more of a straight talker than it appears Barack Obama turned out to be?"
Nobody could accuse the press of ignoring the fiasco-on-a-server that is HealthCare.gov. The Obamacare website’s woes are dominating coverage on the network news, the cable talk shows, the blogs and, of course, high-octane websites like POLITICO. But did the press do a good job of covering the Affordable Care Act before the health care exchanges went online—sort of—on Oct. 1? Were we adequately warned of the troubles that were to come? And now that HealthCare.gov’s problems are headline news, is the coverage of it any better? Sure, one can find a few examples of one news outlet or another warning of impending
MSNBC´s Chris Matthews will interview President Barack Obama this Thursday, the network announced Tuesday. The interview is part of Matthews´ "Hardball College Tour," and will take place at American University in Washington, D.C. According to a news release from MSNBC, Matthews, along with university students, will "discuss a variety of topics with the president including voter suppression, healthcare, the decline of confidence in the government and the overall political dysfunction in Washington." On Monday our colleagues Carrie Budoff Brown and Jonathan Allen reported that the White House is launching a coordinated campaign to return attention to why the Affordable Care Act
Nineteen people stood behind President Obama on stage in the Executive Office Building Tuesday as the president kicked off a new campaign to promote Obamacare. One of those people, a young Florida woman named Monica Weeks, introduced Obama after telling the story of being struck with Crohn´s Disease at age 19 and receiving expensive treatments for several years that were covered by her parents´ health care plan — because Obamacare allowed her to remain on that plan until age 26. Now, Weeks said, she has coverage through a job. "The Affordable Care Act gives young adults who are just starting
Continued global warming poses a risk of rapid, drastic changes in some human and natural systems, a scientific panel warned Tuesday, citing the possible collapse of polar sea ice, the potential for a mass extinction of plant and animal life and the threat of immense dead zones in the ocean. At the same time, some worst-case fears about climate change that have entered the popular imagination can be ruled out as unlikely, at least over the next century, the panel found. These include a sudden belch of methane from the ocean or the Arctic that would fry the planet, as
