Political Elites Keep Power
By Blocking Change

Obama´s America: A couple of economists have determined that rulers around the world keep their subjects in poverty so they can maintain power. What does this impart to us about where our country is headed today? Massachusetts Institute of Technology economist Daron Acemoglu and James Robinson, an economist at Harvard, published a study in 2006 that found political elites tend to stand in the way of development because it suits their needs. "Political elites," they said, "will block beneficial economic and institutional change when they are afraid that these changes will destabilize the

Heading off this nonsense is the true meaning and purpose of...

"Congress shall make no law...."

and...

"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."

We have a lot of work to do.

It´s more than blocking change. It´s favoring pathological behaviors and damaging ideas while denigrating positive change and freedom.

It´s hard to find a nation that´s both wealthy and under the domination of an oppressive government.
The two don´t go together. Dictators hate free markets. Tyrants want to keep technological advances out of the hands of their people. Monarchs fear property rights. Despots loathe the rule of law. To the totalitarian and the oligarch, an open society and transparent governance are anathemas.

Well, hello Barack Obama !!!

Putin Declares War
Wall Street Journal, by Editorial    Original Article

Vladimir Putin´s Russia seized Ukraine´s Crimean peninsula by force on the weekend and now has his sights on the rest of his Slavic neighbor. The brazen aggression brings the threat of war to the heart of Europe for the first time since the end of the Cold War. The question now is what President Obama and free Europe are going to do about it. With a swiftness and organization that suggests the plans were hatched weeks ago, Mr. Putin is moving to carve up Ukraine after Russia´s satrap in Kiev, former President Viktor Yanukovych, was deposed in a popular democratic uprising.

U.S., Europe Threaten to Punish Putin

The U.S. and its European allies vowed Sunday to isolate Russian President Vladimir Putin and punish his nation´s economy, demanding he withdraw what they called an occupation force from Ukraine´s Crimean region. Washington began canceling joint economic and trade initiatives with Moscow, including preparations for the summit of the Group of Eight leading nations scheduled to be held in Sochi, Russia, in June. Senior U.S. officials said the administration was also beginning discussions with Congress on implementing targeted economic and financial sanctions on Russian companies and leaders if the Kremlin didn´t begin pulling back from Crimea. "Russian forces now have complete operational control

Donetsk, Ukraine Crimea was the appetizer. The real prize for Vladimir Putin is likely to be eastern Ukraine. Without this vast region of coal mines and factories, the Kremlin strongman won´t be able to achieve his goal of either controlling, destabilizing or splitting Ukraine. Otherwise the takeover of the country´s southern peninsula hardly seems worth the trouble. The Kremlin´s claims about the importance of ethnic Russian identity and language are just a sideshow in the struggle here. What´s going on is a pure power play. Since Mr. Putin has nuclear weapons and no apparent care for world opinion, give him an edge.

WASHINGTON — OY. By the time the Bushes and Clintons are finished, they are going to make the Tudors and the Plantagenets look like pikers. Before these two families release their death grip on the American electoral system, we’re going to have to watch Chelsea’s granddaughter try to knock off George P.’s grandson, Prescott Walker Bush II. Barack Obama, who once dreamed of being a transformational president, will turn out to be a mere hiccup in history, the interim guy who provided a tepid respite while Hillary and Jeb geared up to go at it. Iran is moving ahead with a nuclear program that U.S. officials said would be frozen, and it is now clear the USA and other world powers are willing to accept an Iranian enrichment program that Iran refuses to abandon, say analysts. Iran has continued research and development on new, far more efficient machines for producing uranium fuel that could power reactors or bombs, and its stockpile of low enriched uranium has actually grown, according to a report by Institute for Science and International Security. The Iranian regime has also trumpeted recent tests of new ballistic missiles that could be used to deliver

Here´s President Obama on Friday: "The United States will stand with the international community in affirming that there will be costs for any military intervention in Ukraine." Characteristically, Obama establishes a few degrees of separation between himself and actually acting. He doesn´t say, straightforwardly, that the United States will lead the international community in imposing costs for any military intervention in Ukraine. No. The United States will "stand with" others in "affirming" that "there will be costs." One suspects that President Putin isn´t very worried about affirmations of future costs by the international community. He´s seen Bashar al-Assad survive similar

Surely, some kind of ending is upon us. Last week climate protesters demanded the silencing of Charles Krauthammer for a Washington Post column that notices uncertainties in the global warming hypothesis. In coming weeks a libel trial gets under way brought by Penn State´s Michael Mann, author of the famed hockey stick, against National Review, the Competitive Enterprise Institute, writer Rand Simberg and roving commentator Mark Steyn for making wisecracks about his climate work. The New York Times runs a cartoon of a climate "denier" being stabbed with an icicle. These are indications of a political movement turned to defending

Yet then-President Clinton did nothing — a pattern with both him and his wife. It came to light during a 2010 employment discrimination case filed by FBI agent Bassem Youssef, a Coptic Christian who contended he´d been passed over for promotion after directing an agent he recruited after the 1993 terror attack on the World Trade Center. The still-unnamed agent provided valuable intelligence to the bureau on that 1993 case, and went on to reveal the terror ring´s

When it comes to wild accusations, Red-baiting Joe McCarthy had nothing on race-baiting Eric Holder. At least some of McCarthy´s charges proved true. The attorney general´s, on the other hand, are completely unfounded; yet his list of Americans and American institutions he thinks are racist just keeps growing. Just weeks after absurdly accusing public school teachers of systematic discrimination, he recklessly leveled charges of racism at the 48 states that bar felons from voting, suggesting they´re acting like "post-Reconstruction states" enforcing Jim Crow laws. As John noted below, President Obama spent an hour and a half on the telephone with Vladimir Putin discussing the Russian invasion of Ukraine. What was the conversation like? We can probably get a good sense of it by considering the account of President Bush’s conversations with Putin set forth by Peter Baker in his excellent book about the Bush presidency, Days of Fire. It’s well known that Bush and Putin got on well at first. But when the relationship soured, Bush became exasperated by his talks with the Russian bully. Putin seemed to delight in debating Bush. President Barack Obama is warning Russia "there will be costs" for any military maneuvers it launches in Ukraine, a move U.S. and Ukrainian officials say they believe to be already underway. Officials say Obama may retaliate by canceling a trip to Russia this summer for an international summit and could also cut off trade discussions with Moscow. But it´s unclear whether those moves will have any impact on Russia´s calculus in Ukraine, which is at the center of what many see as a tug of war between East and West. The statement was made as Russian forces — including attack helicopters — appeared in peripheral parts of the Ukraine that are largely populated by ethnic Russians. There’s no evidence that Obama wants to get involved in what may become a war between the Ukraine and Russia. He did not threaten any significant retaliation if Russian force attack nor did he offer military aid to the Ukraine. He announced that Vice President Joe Biden — but not

President Obama´s proclaimed strategy to "bypass Congress" — most conspicuously his broad rewriting of the Affordable Care Act — has given unusual prominence to a fairly arcane legal doctrine: standing. Standing is what is preventing a potential blizzard of litigation against the president´s unilateral decrees, and ironically, it´s a doctrine liberal jurists have long decried. To challenge the government in federal court, it isn´t enough to simply believe that the government´s conduct is illegal or even unconstitutional. Federal courts can hear only specific disputes about the law as applied to particular people. To be heard in court, a person must have

President Obama spoke for 90 minutes with Russian President Vladimir Putin as the United States, its top European partners and the U.N. Security Council spent the day trying to fashion a response to the rapid escalation of the Ukraine crisis after Russian troops took up positions throughout the autonomous republic of Crimea. Obama expressed “deep concern,” the White House said, and called on Russia to withdraw its forces back to its bases in Crimea and “to refrain from any interference elsewhere in Ukraine.” Putin appeared to have given little ground, according to a readout of the conversation from his office.
