Time to Call the President´s
Budget Bluff

Wall Street Journal, by Keith Hennessey

Original Article

Flush with the adrenaline rush of his election victory, President Obama insists that Congress must now agree not only to raise taxes on the "rich," but also to adopt his previously ignored full budget. The president demands a $1.6 trillion tax increase over the next decade. He maintains that higher revenues must come from marginal-rate increases but offers no policy rationale. He wants to treat $900 billion in spending cuts he agreed to in 2011 (as part of the Budget Control Act) as if they now count on his ledger as new cuts. He says that he will consider

John Boehner needs to whip the GOP in line, pass a budget, and pass it to the Senate!

Let Dingy Hairy and Our Dear Reader be the ones to drive the bus over the cliff, or pass the Budget!

Make the dems own what they´ve done, let the people of this nation feel the pain of what the dems have done.

It´s the only way to clarify minds.

0bama is where he is and continues to be there because of a skillfully planned effort not to be made to own anything he doesn´t want to. People who suggest that the best thing is to give him what he wants, then the voters will hold him and the ´Rat party responsible for everything, are walking straight into a carefully set trap. Zippy doesn´t intend to own up to anything (including his birth story).

I agree. It will be painful, but the wakeup call is needed.

Oblamer is holding the middle class hostage in his negotiations deal. No matter what republicans do, they will get the blame when it goes south.

If they do nothing, they can´t be blamed, but only stand, prepared to pick up the pieces.

Have you noticed the more time passes on these negotiations, the more spending gets added to the deal? It´s like an addiction, the taxes will never go to the debt. The faster we let it fall apart, the faster we can put humpty dumpty back together again. Allowing this to drag out 4 more years will be sheer agony as it is.

I already feel like vomiting every time I hear the term fiscal cliff. I feel like we fell into the twilight zone, and I want out.

Replier #6 is spot on about the Teflon One: failure and shortcomings never stick to him. Actually impossible to think of a NYT or NBC story that would point out how his policies have yet to promote economic growth, reduce unemployment, control costs or improve our lives. Only media criticism is that he wasn´t radical enough in his demands.

That said, everything he has done has failed. GOP has to be reminded of this despite the heat brought on them.

#4, I just emailed Boehner´s site and told him pretty much the same thing only with much stronger (but not profane) language.

Suggest all y´all do likewise. It´s Obama´s to own and to hell with how the media will paint us. They will do it no matter what we do, so let the Democrats take us over the cliff without OUR fingerprints on it.

They made the mess. Let them clean it up -- if they really want to, that is.

How are the Republicans like the Israelis? No matter what happens, Republicans get the blame.
The Israelis have long since stopped trying to court the world´s favor. They know they´re not going to get it, so they do what they know is best for themselves.
Republicans should do the same. "We offered tax hikes, Obama could not offer spending cuts--he drove us over the cliff, not us."

Good article. Excellent points. If the pubbies can´t get a good deal with substantive spending cuts NOW - then it behooves them to let the dems take us over the cliff. Absolutely - call Obama´s bluff.

And if we go over - do NOT - do NOT restore the Bush Tax Cuts for the middle class. They want the Clinton levels - let them have them. The pubbies will have leverage after the cliff - for insisting on real tax reform and spending cuts NOW.

While all comments are generally spot-on, #6 is probably most correct. Since he (I can´t type his name) has never owned anyting in his life, why start now, Furthermore, he is being aided and abetted, even if only indirectly, by the press who has now invented, created, and is skillfully marketing the lastest cliche: "fiscal cliff." Think "gravitas.". And as another poster rightly pointed out, the electorate is now too stupid and unable to form a coherent argument against anything Washington says or does.

The coward in the White House sent his flunkie ,tax cheat Geithner to show their plan which was laughable, it will fail .Obama in his first term did not spend enough so he wants to spend much more. In the meantime the National Debt is approaching 16.5 Trillion dollars( $16,335,666,xxx,xxx). Speaker Boehner should NOT consider the Democratic plan because it´s foolish laughable bent on turning this country into a Socialist big government dictatorial boondoggle.Rep Boehner get your troops together and issue the riot act,no cave in .

There were many voices urging a government shutdown over the debt limit fiasco last year. Those who "knew better" have painted themselves into this corner. Now there are no "good" options.

The "least bad", as Hennessey suggests, is for the House to pass a simple extension of the Bush tax rates for those under $250K - give NerØbama what he originally asked for - and go home for Christmas. Make it abundantly clear that the debt limit will not be raised in February, and - blamed or not - they are prepared to shut down the government this time - really.

However, I doubt that Boehner and his "go-along" friends have it in them to do it.

This was assured when obozo fired the Chair of GM, stiffed the bondholders and gave everything to the unions and the stupid republicans did NOTHING.

Now we need to go over the cliff. Better now than in a year when it is twice as high. If the republicans had any cahones, they would say, "Fine, raise the taxes on over $1 million AND implement these specific cuts." Pass that, send it to the dysfunctional senate and then go home. Let obozo and the democrats explain why they crashed the country.

If they cave, they will never be a national party again and will go the way of the Whigs. They made me an Independent. Will only fund Tea Party candidates from now on. I saw Tommy Thompson, and how well that one went here in Wisconsin. He was touted as the "only" one who could beat Tammy Baldwin.

President Obama on Friday said that Republicans were behind the biggest threat to voting rights in decades. “The principle of one person, one vote is the single greatest tool we have to redress an unjust status quo. You would think there would not be an argument about this anymore,” said Obama in an address to Rev. President Reagan was holding a meeting in the Cabinet Room on March 25, 1985, when Press Secretary Larry Speakes came over to me, as communications director, with a concern. The White House was about to issue a statement on the killing of Major Arthur Nicholson, a U.S. army officer serving in East Germany. Maj. Nicholson had been shot in cold blood by a Russian soldier. Speakes thought the president´s statement, "This violence was unjustified," was weak. I agreed. We interrupted the president, who reread the statement, then said go ahead with it. A copy of Barack and Michelle Obama’s tax returns released Friday shows that the first couple gave only .3 percent of their income to their church in 2013. The Obamas made a total of $59,251 in charitable contributions in 2013 — 12.3 percent of their income — but most of the donations went to primarily secular organizations. From their adjusted gross income of $481,098, the president and first lady gave $1,500 to St. John’s Church, an Episcopalian parish near the White House where they occasionally attend services. So the White House did me a favor by releasing the 2013 joint federal income tax return of Barack and Michelle Obama Friday afternoon. That´s an effective tax rate of 20.4 percent. • The Obamas are due a tax refund of $19,108. The antiviral drugs Tamiflu (oseltamivir) and Relenza (zanamivir ) are commonly used to treat influenza in healthy adults and children. In the case of Tamiflu, the drug does shorten symptoms of influenza by about half a day - as the manufacturer suggests - but there is insufficient evidence to support claims that it reduces hospital admissions or serious complications, such as confirmed pneumonia or

Big Government: As students flood Twitter with images of inedible slop, it´s clear that Michelle Obama´s government school lunch revamp is a costly failure. It´s time to get the feds out of kids´ lunch boxes. The $12 billion federal student lunch program, which serves 30.7 million kids, is losing participants fast — more than a million just last year, according to a recent Government Accountability Office report. The reason: the first lady´s Healthy Hunger-free Kids Act, an act that has accomplished exactly the opposite of what it claimed it would — leaving hungry, angry, disgusted kids and dumpsters full of wasted

Recently elected Democratic Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe is warning that global warming could raise sea levels high enough to flood the Hampton Roads region, home to the world´s largest naval base, without immediate and “smart decisions.” Addressing an environmental summit this week at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Va., McAuliffe embraced climate change, blamed humans for causing it, and said action is needed now to protect Virginia´s coast from rising ocean levels that will result from global warming. “The first big decision of course is to accept that climate change is real,” he told the group. “I happen to believe in

Solar power has won the global argument. Photovoltaic energy is already so cheap that it competes with oil, diesel and liquefied natural gas in much of Asia without subsidies. Roughly 29pc of electricity capacity added in America last year came from solar, rising to 100pc even in Massachusetts and Vermont.[Snip] The technology is improving so fast--helped by the US military--that it has achieved a virtous circle. Michael Parker and Flora Chang, at Sanford Bernstein, say we entering a new order of "global energy deflation" that must ineluctably erode the viability of oil, gas and the fossil fuel nexus over time.

Nearly a year into the IRS scandal, we still don´t know exactly what happened—though we are finally getting an inkling. That´s thanks to the letter House Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp sent this week to the Justice Department recommending a criminal probe of Lois Lerner. The average citizen might be dizzied by the torrent of confusing terms—BOLO lists, Tigta, 501(c)(4)—and the array of accusations that have made up this IRS investigation. Mr. Camp´s letter takes a step back to remind us why this matters, even as it provides compelling new information that goes to motive and method—and clarifies some of

The deportation of foreigners living illegally in the United States is similar to the forced internment of ethnic-Japanese Americans in World War II, according to Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi. “I’ll be very honest with you: Looking at the numbers at some point, in terms of how people are treated and deported and families separated and the rest, this has a scent of Japanese internment,” Pelosi told a Politico reporter. “It’s really a black mark,” said Pelosi. Roughly 110,000 ethnic-Japanese immigrants and their American children were detained during World War II after Japan’s sneak attack on Americans in Pearl Harbor. Pelosi also urged Obama
