Censorship or common decency? Newark Library covers up controversial artwork

| Editor´s note: The artwork, which can be seen lower in this story, may be offensive to some readers. The talk at the Newark Library these days has nothing to do with an anticipated book collection, the next visit by schoolchildren or a lecture on Brick City history. It’s all about a huge drawing hanging in the second-floor reference room, raising so much ruckus that the head librarian has had to cover it up — so no one can see what it shows. It’s covered with cloth and that’s the way many employees want to keep it. Kara Walker, a renowned African-American

Comments: White slave owners and the Klan have all but destroyed what´s left of Newark, NJ, and lest any child forget whom to blame, some unknown person displayed "edgy" pornography in the public library.

Agit-prop. Cartoonish, ham-handedly political, and gratuitous. But if the standards of the community support it, who´s to censor it?
In short, a crappy drawing that would never have been displayed if it weren´t for the fact that it graphically represents America´s Original Sin.
It´s sometimes laughable how political correctness leads to these conundrums.

The library thought they would demonstrate community support and be edgy at the same time. The ignorant staff thinks if it is from a Black artist, well who are we to question it. Where did the funding come from? The city school budget? I thought Newark was the home of the new Caliphate recuiting center.

This work is to cause bitterness and sow hate. Should we display pictures of the white couple raped and murdered by a gang of blacks several years ago (that no newspaper other than a local one would cover)? Give me a break.

Interesting subject, the exploitation and torture of slaves by Democrats, but the idea fails because the ´artist´ is incompetent on just about every level. From the framing of the subject, selection of key images to every square inch of the composition and paint, the artwork screams out the fact that it is an amateur effort. A five year old might get a sound out of a trumpet, but that doesn´t mean he can play a tune. Having a minimum standard for competence by the creator really isn´t censorship, it is merciful to the audience and ultimately a service to idiots who think they can pose as ´artists´ when they haven´t bothered to hone any skill whatsoever. Kara Walker is ´renowned,´ but who is kidding who here? Without the shock ´value,´ her work is pathetic.

Passengers on NJ Transit’s No. 113 Express bus were taken on a ride from hell during Thursday’s morning rush when a lost driver took a really scenic route to New York, leaving commuters nearly two hours late for work. The express from Dunellen to the Port Authority Bus Terminal became a local—and then some. Passenger Aileen Iosso sent this text to her boss: "I don’t know where I am and I don’t know when I’ll be in." She said she boarded her usual express bus in Cranford around 7 a.m., expecting to arrive at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan

Chicago — Former President Bill Clinton sat down with Gov. Chris Christie today to talk about New Jersey´s recovery from Hurricane Sandy—touching on the state´s emotional connection to the Shore, the need for another source of flood insurance, and the governor´s famous "get the hell off the beach" comment. The interview closed out a three-day conference in Chicago held by the Clinton Global Initiative, the organization Clinton founded. Sandy devastated New Jersey—especially its shoreline—last fall, leaving million without power and seriously damaging hundreds of thousands of homes. In all, New Jersey suffered $39 billion in property damage.

Vienna - Wanted: A jester. Wallflowers need not apply. It´s no joke. An Austrian hotel is advertising for a modern-day court fool, who is communicative, extroverted, musical, creative and imaginative. Applicants are asked to bring—and play—their musical instrument during the job interview. Also welcome: creative costumes. The successful candidate will earn 1,400 euros—around $1,900—a month. Hotel director Melanie Franke says those interested should not think they´re on a fool´s errand in applying. She says the idea is to treat guests like royalty, noting that "jesters were a luxury that royal families indulged themselves in."

For the first time, America´s racial and ethnic minorities now make up about half of the under-5 age group and will be a majority by this year or next. That´s according to new census numbers that show a faster shift than expected toward a minority-majority, one where whites will be in the minority by 2043. The new estimates also show that, for the fist time in more than a century, the death rate for white Americans outnumbers the birth rate. Just a year ago, numbers showed that whites had fallen to a minority among babies. Fueled by immigration

It´s brought to you by the letter P — for prison. PBS’s "Sesame Street" is moving from ABCs and counting numbers to offering its young viewers a bigger lesson in life: how to cope when Mommy or Daddy lands behind bars. Called "Little Children, Big Challenges: Incarceration," the program is distributing "tool kits" to schools, community centers and even jails in 10 states — including New York — starting today to help kids ages 3 to 8, organizers said. According to one "tip" for caregivers, "Before you visit your incarcerated loved one, let your child know some of the things she can expect

The anomaly showed up late this afternoon and was centered near the northwest edge of Redstone Arsenal close to Zierdt Road and Madison Boulevard/I-565. Sallie Mae, formally named SLM Corp, said Wednesday that the two separate companies – an education loan management business and a consumer banking business – would help unlock value and boost its long-term growth potential. The education loan management business would include the company´s portfolios of federally guaranteed and private education loans, as well as most related servicing and collection activities. Remondi will continue as its chief executive. The principal assets of the business are likely to include

Numerous bolts used to anchor the railing along the bicycle path on the new Bay Bridge eastern span have failed, forcing Caltrans to make plans to replace hundreds of the steel parts, The Chronicle has learned. Crews that built the railing committed what experts called a basic mistake - they welded the bolts in place firmly in their slots rather than leaving a small amount of room to accommodate a natural expansion of the bicycle path that happens in hot weather. As a result, scores of the 1-inch-diameter bolts have been sheared off along the 1.2-mile bike path

As Joachim Sander looks for a new car, he’s thinking it might be time to go electric. German Chancellor Angela Merkel will need the help of the Frankfurt IT consultant — and a lot more like him — to keep her word. Three years after Merkel said she wants to see 1 million battery-powered cars on German roads by 2020, there has been scant progress: On Jan. 1, only 7,114 of Germany’s 43.4 million passenger vehicles were electrics. Even adding hybrids powered with both electricity and conventional fuels brings the number to just 72,109. “Our plans and projects are ambitious, but

Trenton — At least 20,000 inmates locked up in New Jersey’s prisons and jails were improperly paid nearly $24 million in benefits from state and federal programs over a two-year period, an audit by the state comptroller’s office has found. More than $10 million in unemployment benefits were paid to more than 7,600 inmates, according to the findings, which were released this morning. In one case, the audit found that an inmate collected unemployment payments for a year — totaling about $39,000 — while incarcerated for a drug offense. “Suffice it to say that when thousands of inmates are collecting unemployment checks

In the midst of the eruption of near-daily scandals involving the Obama administration, let us not forget that until just a few months ago, Hillary Clinton was the most significant persona within that administration besides the president himself. Let us not also forget that notwithstanding the scandal-grenades going off all around us, Mrs. Clinton diligently plans her run for the presidency, even while several of those scandals are obviously and entirely her responsibility, exposing the State Department during her tenure as an utter sewer of corruption, cronyism, and fatal incompetence.

SAN FRANCISCO - Lauren Grey didn´t think much about the gender recorded on her Illinois driver´s license until she went to test-drive a new car. Although she had been living as a woman for months and easily obtained a license with her new name and a picture reflecting her feminine appearance, Grey´s ID still identified her as male, puzzling the salesmen and prompting uncomfortable questions. N ot long ago, conservatives like myself were thrilled to find out that Fox News, often portrayed as the mouthpiece of the conservative movement, had parted ways with former governor of Alaska (and quitter) Sarah Palin. This was truly a cause for celebration. Those of us devoted to building a conservative movement capable of winning elections had come to view the former governor as the symbol of everything, and I do mean everything, wrong with the modern conservative movement. But now, Roger Ailes has rehired her. And in so doing, Ailes has issued a painful reminder that he cares far more

Over the years, I’ve read plenty of claims that we’re witnessing a “crackup” of liberals or conservatives (or sometimes both at the same time). Normally, I react by rolling my eyes. For me, “crackup” claims are a almost always hack way of expressing unjustified triumphalism. But now I think I see a crackup. Given the scandal-a-week Obama administration, you might think that the crackup, if any, is looming on the left. But that would be to ignore the left’s tendency to march more or less in lockstep through any scandal or storm. No, the crackup I see coming is among conservatives.

Certain people are born gifted with "It" -- something that compels you to watch them. Sarah Palin is one such individual.
