The ever-increasing culture of entitlement was correctly identified by Mitt Romney as a leading factor in the Democrats´ victory. However, running in parallel is another culture on the rise -- one far less well-identified, which bodes ominously not only for the GOP´s future prospects, but, more importantly, for the democratic process itself.(snip)Pseudo-idealism is a term coined by the Australian biologist Jeremy Griffith to describe apparently charitable behavior that on scrutiny is revealed as selfish, because the giver is engaging in it only so that he or she can feel good about him- or herself.
How do we cure this? One aid would be to limit the milk from the teat and make it more expensive to the average liberal. End the Payroll Tax holiday, all the Bush rates, Obama´s tax credits that are paid to the poor, and the remnants of Stimulus. Yeah, small businesses and the rich will pay 42 billion more in 2013 (they won´t actually because they´ll earn less), but the Not-Rich will pony up an additional 385 billion. That´s 427 billion in 2013 that Obama needs to match with reduced spending. Obama is already screaming about Sequester which is only 10s of billions a year. It won´t balance the budget but its a lot closer.
My take on liberals is that they don´t think things through, they don´t have a lot of common sense, they don´t have a healthy honest skeptism, they don´t study history, and they are a bit immature. They tend to wallow in, and love to talk to each other about, their problems, instead of solving them. Overriding all this is a contempt for happy successful people.
Several years ago I attended a drivers-ed course for us senior citizens. To break the ice before beginning the course, the instructor asked each pupil to write on a piece of paper what he/she was most proud of, which he then read to the whole class. Quite a few wrote "My volunteer work."
Nobody should confuse balancing a budget - (BB)- with reducing the deficit. They are two different animals. A BB only means we spend for a year exactly what we take in. If DC produced a BB for 2013 we would still have 16+ trillion in debt. Reducing govn spending, entitlement reform and open ended capitalism are the solutions to fixing our financial problems.
Good article. It does not, however, specify the sine qua non of such psychopathology, namely a society that is safe, orderly, comfortable and secure. Never in the history of the world have so many had it so good, so safe, and so easy as Americans have it today. This tends to blur the boundaries between fantasy and reality. What exists seems to exist naturally and necessarily, as if it made and maintained itself. Children born into such comfortable circumstances take them all for granted and are incensed when they do not get their way about everything. Every frustration of the will is experienced as unjust and unnatural.
There is also a small subset of Leftist radicals who have what might be termed a gnostic hatred of reality, reality here being defined as anything other than themselves, hence obstructve to their will. They literally hate everything and everyone that actually exists and lust to replace them by the contents of their infantile fantasies. This extreme pathology also requires a safe, easy, comfortable, secure existence with its corresponding relief from the stresses and demands of coping with reality raw, i.e. without the almost magical transformations and augmentations of advanced civilization. Liberalism would not last long -say a week or two- if the national power grid went down or some other catastrophe occurred that presented reality in an undeniable and demanding form requiring attention and action. It is no accident that the worst Leftist nonsense emanates from the brains of underemployed scholars, tenured and otherwise, and other people who do not have to work seriously for a living or confront the direct demands of reality.
This is just another way of saying what we´ve all known to be true for some time. Michael Savage was the first one to identify and name this pathology many years ago now, "Liberalism Is A Mental Disorder".
Liberalism is emotionalism taken to an extreme, and the false belief that man is inherently "good," but ´environment´ makes him go bad. These are all lies of the Devil himself, and that´s why today´s liberal is at a complete polar opposite of the Divine viewpoint in all respects.
Heartily agree with #5 except on one point: The subset is actually fairly large and getting larger. Meanwhile, I think the chances of the kind of a "correcting catastrophe" described in that post are very good, given the inevitable dysfunction of a society that has chosen to rely on Leftist dunderheads to run everything. In fact, the mentality described by this article must ultimately lead to complete destruction. It is wholly unsustainable.
All great posts, especially 7 and 8. I can´t add a thing except to note that liberals approach everything with emotion, and conservatives use logic. Which explains, now that I think of that, why it´s impossible to have a meaningful conversation between a conservative and a lib.
".... providence for their extreme ill has its extreme remedy at hand. For such peoples, like so many beasts, have fallen into the custom of each man thinking only of his own private interests and have reached the extreme of delicacy, or better of pride, in which like wild animals they bristle and lash out at the slightest displeasure. Thus no matter how great the throng and press of their bodies, they live like wild beasts in a deep solitude of spirit and will, scarcely any two being able to agree since each follows his own pleasure or caprice. By reason of all this, providence decrees that, through obstinate factions and desperate civil wars, they shall turn their cities into forests and the forests into dens and lairs of men. In this way, through long centuries of barbarism, rust will consume the misbegotten subtleties of malicious wits that have turned them into beasts made more inhuman by the barbarism of reflection than the first men had been made by the barbarism of sense. . . . Hence peoples who have reached this point of premeditated malice, when they receive this last remedy of providence and are thereby stunned and brutalized, are sensible no longer of comforts, delicacies, pleasures, and pomp, but only of the sheer necessities of life. And the few survivors in the midst of an abundance of the things necessary for life naturally become sociable and, returning to the primitive simplicity of the first world of peoples, are again religious, truthful, and faithful. Thus providence brings back among them the piety, faith, and truth which are the natural foundations of justice as well as the graces and beauties of the eternal order of God. . . ." http://www.historyguide.org/intellect/new_science.html
I´ve believed for a number of years that arrogant self-righteousness is a drug to liberals. Apply that to "situational ethics" and one-issue obsessions, and you´ve got a lot of loony addicts running loose looking for a fix.
I can´t stand to be around a liberal any more. They used to be annoying; now, they´re horrifying.
Liberalism is the desire to live in a fantasy land and refusing to accept the responsibilities that go with adulthood. This pseudo idealism discussed in the article is a corruption of the concept of charity. Charity involves taking money or something you could have used for your own needs and using it to help another who is in need. The counterfeit charity of liberals consists in taking the resources needed from someone else to help the needy. It is not charity to promote a collectivist government program to help the needy yet those who do this imagine themselves as more charitable than anyone. These are the people who disparage Mother Theresa as only putting on a bandage while admiring themselves as having a plan to eliminate all poverty. Mother Theresa never claimed to eliminate poverty but she, and the sister who joined her, helped many thousands of people one at a time.
I have a couple of lib friends and enjoy pulling their chain. For example, one says she has no problem with socialism (which in her mind, it helps social causes). So I asked her how much she makes and started deducting taxes to pay for her lazy neighbor and everybody else who does not earn their way.
Then I went into healthcare all paid by the government. I told her we needed to help fat Joe´s health expenses and the octogenarian who needs a kidney. She refused to acknowledged how her income was drastically reduced due to taxation and confiscation of her miniscule wealth.
She was more interested in arguing about women´s rights and abortion and was OK with rationing health care to ´lost´ cases. I couldn´t make a dent in the argument even after I told she and other libs need to abort their fetuses more.
Great article and some really good posts. The dumbest lib I know is my SIL & she is always proclaiming her good deeds - since I´ve seen her selfishness & dishonesty up close, I know it is not because she CAAARES so much - she just wants to brag on herself & pat herself on the back. She once insisted on my watching a really depressing movie about awful, drug-addicted teens with her. Since it ended in tragedy, I asked her what was the appeal of the movie? She floored me when she said that she liked to see other people whose lives were much worse than hers - that is when I knew that liberalism is just a mask for their sadism.
LiberalISM is but a useful tool used by power-hungry pols with delusions of grandure. When such statist pols get their way tyranny is the result, NOT Life, Liberty & Justice for all, much less the Pursuit of Happiness.
I don´t agree that hard times turn people into Liberals. I think the availability of corruption does. When people see others manipulating the system to get more "stuff", they think they should do so as well.
The ´50´s were, as we look back on it, tougher times than we have now...but very conservative, big on family values, and a recovery from the Great Depression. We now see that time as socially restricting (giving birth to illegitimate babies was frowned upon, for example)...but now maybe some will see tougher social standards as a good thing.
If Rufus McDonald were white, you´d already know his name, and he´d be on the path to pushing George Zimmerman aside as the most hated man in America. But because he is black, you probably have never heard of him, unless you live in Chicago. You see, Mr. McDonald was cleaning out an attic and discovered some papers. As Kim Janssen of the Chicago Sun-Times reported Tuesday: Hidden in a dusty trunk in an abandoned and looted Englewood home, the papers of Harvard´s first black graduate, Richard T. Greener, had long been thought lost to history. (snip)McDonald - who recently sold
Hard though it may be to take seriously Joe Biden running for president, evidently Hillary Clinton thinks it important to dump on him. In a speech to convenience store owners (the sort of speech that yields a six figure fee), Hillary stuck the stiletto into Joe´s back and twisted it. (snip) Now that she has dumped on him in public, perhaps the gloves will come off. The upside for us is that his brain can´t keep up with his mouth, so who knows what he will blurt out? He is a born schmoozer, so he will hear lots of rumors
Many people criticize President Obama for spending too much time campaigning, traveling or on the golf course. They are wrong. He spends too much time in a far more removed and unique place: Wonderland. Indeed, he seemingly lives in Wonderland. The problem is that the rest of us live in the real world. Over the last five years it has becoming increasingly clear that Barack Obama and his crew of handpicked officials see America and the rest of the world in ways at variance with reality.
My recent post titled "America needing a white Republican president" has brought out the raving Leftist lunatics. Despite the fact that I´m black, most Leftists are calling me a racist.(snip)The gist of the article is that if America had a white Republican president, everybody would be free to criticize him without fear of being called a racist. I go on to make the point that disagreeing with a white president should have the same implications of disagreeing with Obama. Apparently not. God forbid Obama should have to actually deal with life all by himself. White Republican presidents needed no such
Two events within one recent week confirm that, on the subject of hate crime, Lady Justice now routinely sheds her blindfold, checks out the race of the accused, and judges accordingly. In that George Zimmerman looks like the kind of person who might commit a hate crime -- or at least has the name of such a person -- the investigation into his shooting of Trayvon Martin nearly two years ago remains "ongoing." So said Attorney General Eric Holder on September 30. In that Jeremiah Hill does not look like the kind of person who might commit a hate crime -- at
Mockery of Obamacare´s incompetent rollout has spread to the mainstream media, no longer able to ignore the fiasco. Case in point: The Miami Herald, not exactly a right wing rag. (snip)The first two weeks of healthcare.gov have passed, with no progress toward a usable website on which to enroll. The public is being told that they can also enroll via paper applications, but does anyone really think that the staff are in place to handle the volume of applications that must be completed to avoid the fines taxes that are part of Obamacare? Eventually, those paper applications will have to
A reader writes to us about his experience trying to sign up for Obamacare. Today I received the email below from the Health Insurance Marketplace and decided to go to the link to "preview Marketplace plans and prices." I did so, indicating I was checking plans for "You and your spouse" in Palm Beach County, Florida. (snip) Then I realized that I was never asked anything at all about our ages. So I wondered how a premium could be estimated without knowing whether we were twenty-somethings or middle aged. I went on the Marketplace´s Live Chat to find out, and here´s
Democrats tell us that ObamaCare is "the law of the land," and that the Supreme Court declared it constitutional, and that we should get used to it -- it´s here to stay. Actually, the Court found ObamaCare unconstitutional on two counts, but let it pass anyway. The problem for defenders of ObamaCare is that its court challenges just keep coming. One place to check up on them is the website Health Care Lawsuits. In September, the American Enterprise Institute ran an article by Chris Conover headlined "Will the Courts Derail Obamacare?" The article covers several of the ongoing court challenges to
It is now quite clear that President Obama is managing the shutdown of 17% of the government to inflict pain, while sparing himself and his family any discomfort. Although his media lickspittles will not publicize the worst abuses, social media offers us the chance to spread the word of his peculiar priorities. Today, we learn that the Amber Alert website, which helps rescue kidnapped children, has been taken down "due to the lapse in federal funding." Meanwhile, as Weasel Zippers points out, Let´s Move, Michelle Obama´s pet project against childhood obesity had its site, letsmove.gov still up. In a White House of skewed
Snopes.com is a website that purports to investigate the truthfulness of news reports and internet rumors. But apparently, its primary readership is stupid people. Why else would it bother to "debunk" an obvious work of satire, by well-known brilliant satirists at the website iOwnTheWorld.com? (Incidentally, a daily must-read for me). Here is the image that Snopes found to be "false" (snip)Notice that they omitted the credit to iOwnTheWorld.com, presumably because readers might have actually gone there and realized it is a satirical site. Thus, they betray their crass political motivations, to discredit critics of Obama´s handling of the shutdown. This is
What´s a leftist to do when a cherished program fails embarrassingly? Of course, create a phantom success, and publicize it relentlessly. And that is exactly what has happened with the disastrous launch of Healthcare.gov and the assorted state websites intended to enroll people in Obamacare. Obamacare found its poster boy for "success" in one Chad Henderson, who claims to have successfully enrolled where others have encountered nothing but frustration. As Chad wrote on his Facebook page: I´ve now been interviewed by The Wall Street Journal, Washington Post,Chattanooga Times Free Press, The Huffington Post, Enroll America, and POLITICO!
In an incident ignored by the media, race-baiter extraordinaire Andrea Mitchell and other big-name journalists candidly exposed their bigotry and racial prejudices at a friendly forum in the nation´s capital last year. In an unusually candid conversation, mainstream media stars Mitchell, David Gregory, and Dana Milbank let loose in an orgy of Caucasian self-flagellation during a panel discussion titled, "Media: Race & Politics - The Impact of Race in Politics 2012," at the National Action Network´s conference in Washington, D.C. The left-wing street thug group is headed by none other than Jew-hating homophobe and Obama ally Al Sharpton.
The Obama administration’s hostility toward media and efforts to crack down on whistleblowers and leakers has created “a tremendous chilling effect” on substantive reporting, the Committee to Protect Journalists and veteran reporters said Thursday. The CPJ issued last week a scathing report, written by former Washington Post executive editor Leonard Downie, Jr., on the effects of the Obama administration’s efforts to control press coverage, burnish its image, and thwart unauthorized leaks. Downie joined a panel at the New America Foundation that included Joel Simon, executive director of the CPJ, and Rajiv Chandrasekaran, senior correspondent and associate editor at the Washington Post, to
The debt deal simply hastens the day of reckoning The conventional wisdom is wrong. The mainstream media — and their parrots in the Republican establishment — are claiming that President Obama decisively won the government shutdown battle. In fact, the narrative being peddled is that the GOP brand has been badly damaged, paving the way for a possible Democratic Party takeover of the House of Representatives in the 2014 elections. This is puerile nonsense. Tea Party Republicans, led by Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, may have lost the battle, but they are poised for a major victory in the larger Obamacare war. Liberal
An unnamed Obama administration official claimed that the White House feared GOP subpoenas would slow their work on the Obamacare website, leading to keeping its design in-house with "trusted campaign tech experts" that seemed to have spectacularly failed at creating a successful commerce website. In a Politico article lamenting the second week of failed performance of Healthcare.gov, the Obamacare insurance website, the unnamed official attempts to explain why the whole thing has been such a dismal failure: it´s the Republican´s fault. "Facing such intense opposition from congressional Republicans," Politico wrote, "the administration was in a bunker mentality as it built the enrollment
The Affordable Care Act´s botched rollout has stunned its media cheering section, and it even seems to have surprised the law´s architects. The problems run much deeper than even critics expected, and whatever federal officials, White House aides and outside contractors are doing to fix them isn´t working. But who knows? Omerta is the word of the day as the Obama Administration withholds information from the public. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius is even refusing to testify before the House Energy and Commerce Committee in a hearing this coming Thursday. HHS claims she has scheduling conflicts, but we hope
Of all the bitter fruit of the Barack Obama disaster, the most bitter may be the sense of hopelessness that has descended on Americans, especially the young. Has there ever been anything like it in our history? Even on the eve of the Civil War, was there this much pessimism about our future? Gallup wasn’t around in those days, but I wonder. For a simple measure of how the Obama administration has crushed any sense of hopefulness in the American people, take a look at the survey that Rasmussen Reports does periodically on whether America’s best days are behind her,
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said he might not be good at calculus, but he knows how to legislate. Reid told The Huffington Post that Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is smart, but he can’t outmaneuver the 26-year veteran in the halls of Congress. “He might be able to work a calculus problem better than I can,” Reid said Thursday. “But he can´t legislate better than I can." Reid and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) are credited with brokering the deal that ended the government shutdown. Reid said the House’s decision to go along with a deal to end
In a statement delivered from the White House this morning, President Barack Obama said that now that Congress has enacted a continuing resolution to fund the government--that includes funding to implement Obamacare--he would like to negotiate with the House with the aim of enacting the immigration bill passed by the Senate earlier this year. The key provision in that Senate bill would allow illegal aliens currently in the United States to become legal residents here and get on a "path to citizenship." Critics of the "path to citizenship" call it an "amnesty" because it lets foreign nationals breaking U.S. law--including U.S. immigration
Hollywood action star and former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has been quietly lobbying key politicos for a legal loophole or a constitutional change that would clear the path for him to run for president in 2016. If allowed, Mr. Schwarzenegger would face off against Hillary Rodham Clinton, The New York Post reported. “Schwarzenegger has been talking openly about working on getting the constitutional rules changed so he can run for president in 2016,” a source said, The Post reported. “He is ready to file legal paperwork to challenge the rules.” The actor was born in Austria, making him ineligible to
Grover Norquist isn’t happy with the Defunders. The Americans for Tax Reform president told reporters today that they have a lot of apologies to make and bridges to re-build. “It’d be a good idea if they stopped referring to other Republicans as Hitler appeasers because they opposed the strategy they put forward which failed,” Norquist says. “I think if you make a mistake as big as what they did, you owe your fellow senators and congressmen a big apology — and your constituents, as well, because nothing they did advanced the cause of repealing or dismantling Obamacare.” Norquist refrained from naming the
As they wrap up their 13-month probe into the terrorist attacks in Benghazi that killed four Americans, congressional investigators have zeroed in on a press release issued the day before the murders by White House Press Secretary Jay Carney. They also are seeking fresh testimony from former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. Staffers with the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations told Fox News they have reached the preliminary conclusion – as the Obama administration has long maintained – that no military rescue or remedy was feasible on the night of September 11, 2012, when U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens
Here’s a question for conservatives and Republicans: Going into the 2012 Election Day, or even in the last few days before Election Day, did you think Mitt Romney was going to win? A couple of months ago, did you think the strategy of threatening to shut down the government or prevent raising the debt ceiling, to force the outright repeal or defunding of Obamacare, would really work? Romney lost by 4,967,508 votes, 126 Electoral College votes, and 3.85 percentage points. That’s not very close. Obamacare isn’t going to be repealed this year, and it’s not going to be defunded. So the
"Forward the Light Brigade! Charge for the guns!" he said. Into the Valley of Death, Rode the 600. –Alfred, Lord Tennyson. On an October morning in the Crimea, 1854, British Lord Cardigan led his 600-strong cavalry force into a frontal assault of a fully dug-in and alerted Russian artillery battery. The charge was courageous. And it was suicidal. The Light Brigade was ripped apart in the Valley of Death. Commenting on the bravery and utter futility of the attack, French Marshal Pierre Bosquet declared: "C´est magnifique, mais ce n´est pas la guerre. C´est de la folie." ("It is magnificent, but it is
