| BAMAKO, Mali — Khaira Arby, one of Africa’s most celebrated musicians, has performed all over the world, but there is one place she cannot visit: her native city of Timbuktu, a place steeped in history and culture but now ruled by religious extremists. One day, they broke into Arby’s house and destroyed her instruments. Her voice was a threat to Islam, they said, even though one of her most popular songs praised Allah. “They told my neighbors that if they ever caught me, they would cut my tongue out,” said Arby, sadness etched on her broad face.

Where are the Islamic moderates we hear so much about? Where are the people who speak for theseeople who are supposed to number in the hundreds of millions? Te fact is that these so-called moderates either don´t exist or are cowards of the first magnitude. Many sub-sets (sub-human sets) of Islam prohibit all music and musical instruments.
I suspect that this was a ´sour grapes´ response to the Catholic Church´s dominance in the field of theatrical music, both vocal and orchestral, 500+ years ago.
You can spread a religion with an army but a good choir and orchestra really works much better.

Has anyone here ever heard Mali music? It´s truly beautiful, unlike anything else you have ever heard out of Africa. It sounds like medieval troubadour music with harps and lutes, even though it´s played by slum dwellers in flipflops, dirty tshirts and dreadlocks, or else desert people wearing the kind of attire you wear to ride camels in the Sahara - burnooses. There isn´t anything like it, but there is a reason it´s very popular. Nobody who ever hears it dislikes it.
It shows that Islam is evil because evil abhors beauty and wants it destroyed.

ONLY a handful of peace-time politicians can claim to have changed the world. Margaret Thatcher, who died this morning, was one. She transformed not just her own Conservative Party, but the whole of British politics. Her enthusiasm for privatisation launched a global revolution and her willingness to stand up to tyranny helped to bring an end to the Soviet Union. Winston Churchill won a war, but he never created an “ism”. The essence of Thatcherism was to oppose the status quo and bet on freedom—odd, since as a prim control freak, she was in some ways the embodiment of conservatism.

Speaking in Ohio this week, the Youngstown Vindicator reports, veteran investigative journalist Bob Woodward recalled an “unflattering” story about a dining experience with former Vice President Al Gore. According to the local paper, Woodward “told an unflattering, but amusing story about sitting next to former Vice President Al Gore at a dinner, saying being with him was taxing.” “To be really honest, it’s unpleasant,” the journalist added of his experience with Gore. The AP says most of the pardons were granted to criminals convicted of low-level offenses, though not all were small-time offenders: Most were for people convicted of selling or possessing drugs. However, Robert Phillip Brown was convicted of murder. He was paroled in 1996 after serving 15 years in prison. ... Others pardoned included Francisco Mauricio Nunes, who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and James David Vercellino, who was convicted of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence.

North Korea’s young leader Kim Jong-un is waiting for United States President Barack Obama to make a phone call to Pyongyang to discuss easing tensions on the Korean peninsula, according to Russia’s news agency Itar-Tass. Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”
