Christmas Without China
Union Leader [Manchester, NH], by Meghan Pierce

Holiday consumers have long been aware that shopping local helps their local economy stay vibrant. This holiday season, though, there is a growing awareness that shopping for gifts made in America helps jobs stay stateside. "It´s the jobs thing. People have definitely connected the dots. Consumers are more savvy and more educated than ever, and the days of conspicuous consumption of buy, buy, buy, buy, buy are gone," said JimTherriault, owner of New England Everyday Goods in Peterborough.

You can also search for vintage Christmas items made in the USA. Sometimes they are quite cool looking and bring back good memories.

Yup, instead of low priced necessities I´ll buy some bees wax candles.

Might have helped during the blackout.

I started buying custom cards from Zazzle and Shutterfly because I could not bear to send out a Christmas card that said "Made in China" on the back.

I was also distressed to see The Vermont Country Store carrying so many Christmas standards that are now made in China. I guess I can´t fault them if there are no factories left that will make the ornaments and candles I loved in my childhood.

I make my own ornaments now.

Nothing exemplifies the spirit of Christmas giving among friends and family than homemade gifts. From jams and jellies to whirligigs and birdfeeders, give of your time and yourself instead of the latest electronic gadget. You and your family will be the better for it.

I asked my local shop for Christmas cards that were made in America. All were from China. I did not buy. Agree #5.
I will make up my own Christmas letter (with pictures) this year. I will also look closely at stamps -- none that say justice, equality, even with the flag.

#7, you can have custom stamps made at Zazzle as well. I have been doing that for the past three years. I have my own pictures put on most of them, but they have hundreds of Christmas designs.

I swear I don´t work for the company and that I am a frequent poster, not a shill.

Apart from #1, it´s so nice to see the protectionists alive and well here. While I have no problem buying locally made goods, let´s remember that we also sell over a hundred million dollars worth of goods to China each year. It is less than we buy in return but we are much wealthier per capita; with the potential to sell much more as overall wealth in China increases. Trade is a two-way street. There are always problems but let´s not throw the baby out with the bathwater.
Also I´ve never understood bemoaning the loss of low skill, low wage jobs. How many here would actually work in a factory to produce the goods Americans want?

Before getting to the speech itself, it’s worth noting a few things. When the Democrats passed and Barack Obama signed Obamacare, the majority opposed it. About 56%, in fact. A majority have consistently opposed that law ever since. The Obama administration touted 7 million sign-ups by March 31 as “success.” When that goal appeared to be unreachable, the administration suggested that maybe 5 or 6 million would be enough. Now, as if by magic, they have their number. Somehow. All along, the administration has touted false numbers of enrollees. All along, the administration has neglected to admit that Obamacare is

IN a major behind-the-scenes blowout, President BARACK OBAMA and first lady MICHELLE waged their worst White House fight ever over her lavish vacation trip to China! Sources tell The ENQUIRER that Obama exploded when Michelle refused to cancel her pricey getaway – even after White House advisers warned him that the first couple’s six-year string of extravagant vacations had already drained the U.S. Treasury of a whopping $150 million in taxpayers’ money. A few months back, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius stated for the record that 7 million Obamacare sign-ups by the end of March would constitute success. She was clear about it. But then February came, and February always stinks. It’s just a lousy month. You’re tired of winter, you’re still miles away from spring, and no one was signing up for Obamacare. That 7 million figure looked totally unreachable. So Sebelius does what every other member of the Obama administration does when confronted with inconvenient facts. She lied. In a Tuesday appearance on HuffPost Live to discuss outreach to African American communities,

The North Carolina State Board of Elections has found thousands of instances of voter fraud in the state, thanks to a 28-state crosscheck of voter rolls. Initial findings suggest widespread election fraud. 765 voters with an exact match of first and last name, DOB and last four digits of SSN were registered in N.C. and another state and voted in N.C. and the other state in the 2012 general election. 35,750 voters with the same first and last name and DOB were registered in N.C. and another state and voted in both states in the 2012 general election. 155,692 voters

A triumphant President Barack Obama declared his signature medical insurance overhaul a success, saying it has made America´s health care system ´a lot better.´ But buried in the 7.1 million enrollments he announced in a heavily staged Rose Garden appearance is a more unsettling reality. Numbers from a RAND Corporation study that has been kept under wraps suggest that barely 858,000 previously uninsured Americans – nowhere near 7.1 million – have paid for new policies and joined the ranks of the insured by Monday night. Others were already insured, including millions who lost coverage when their existing policies were suddenly

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, criticized last year by a Vatican official for her support of abortion, received a rosary Tuesday from President Obama that was blessed by Pope Francis. Mrs. Pelosi told reporters of the president’s gift after having lunch with Mr. Obama at the White House. The president met with the pope last week at the Vatican. “I was happy to receive a rosary blessed by Pope Francis,” she said. “It means a great deal to me.” Last year, a Vatican official in Rome said that Mrs. Pelosi should be denied communion. “This is a person who obstinately,

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – President Obama compared the Republican budget plan to a "stinkburger" or "meanwich" during a speech here Wednesday, using a series of zingers in an attempt to strike a contrast with the GOP on economic issues in an election year. In a speech to an enthusiastic crowd of 1,400 at the University of Michigan, Obama repeatedly mocked Republican ideas about how to improve the economy, as he touted his own proposal to raise the minimum wage. Obama, who visited the local Zingerman´s deli before the speech, said that Republican proposals to cut taxes for wealthier Americans and

With Chris Christie in deep trouble, Republican poobahs are reportedly looking to Jeb Bush to save their party in 2016. The former two-term governor of Florida speaks fluent Spanish, is a convert to Catholicism, and has high name recognition. Jeb could raise millions of dollars over night by just saying “yes” to running. Despite all this, there are strong reasons Republicans should say no to him. 1. His last name is poison. Let’s face it, if Jeb Bush had the last name of Something Else he would have already run for president in 2008 or 2012. According to a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll registered voters were asked if they would definitely NOT vote for Jeb Bush and 50 percent said they would not.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is "looking" at banning the sale of tobacco at military installations. According to one military publication, Hagel appears to support it. "As the Navy considers banning tobacco sales on all bases and ships, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel gave a strong endorsement of the review Monday, and suggested that he would be in favor of a ban," reports Stars and Stripes. “I don’t know if there’s anybody in America who still thinks that tobacco is good for you,” Stars and Stripes quotes Hagel as saying. “We don’t allow smoking in any of our government buildings. Atlanta – Vegetarians may have a lower BMI and drink alcohol sparingly, but vegetarian diets are tied to generally poorer health, poorer quality of life and a higher need for health care than their meat-eating counterparts. A new study from the Medical University of Graz in Austria finds that vegetarians are more physically active, drink less alcohol and smoke less tobacco than those who consume meat in their diets. Vegetarians also have a higher socioeconomic status and a lower body mass index. But the vegetarian diet — characterized by a low consumption of saturated fats and cholesterol that includes increased intake

Sarah Palin continues to act in ways that confirm some of the more negative things said about her. For example, she’s taken to Facebook to attack the most recent budget plan by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan.(Snip)Whatever differences Ms. Palin may have with the Ryan plan–and perhaps she’ll take the time to offer an actual critique of if rather than a Facebook entry with lots of upper case words–it’s hardly a joke. But what might elicit a roll of the eyes is comparing Ms. Palin’s views now versus what they were nearly four years ago. Consider this: On December
