Republicans´ Ace in the
Hole: Simpson-Bowles?

Townhall, by Guy Benson

Democrats appear to have the upper hand on the politics of the fiscal cliff, which might explain their brash pronouncements and mind-blowing conceptualization of "compromise." This morning I outlined three possible contingencies for Republicans, none of which is especially attractive. But is there a fourth way? The GOP´s dilemma is a doozy. Their opponents, emboldened by the election, are pushing for counter-productive tax hikes on "the rich" -- a politically popular proposition at the moment -- while offering almost nothing meaningful in return. Meanwhile, Democrats´ allies in the media have been crafting

The GOP does not need to do anything. Let the fiscal cliff occur. Do not vote for any increase in the debt ceiling. Cut off the Democrat freebies by not agreeing to any budget. Let the country go into recession. Let the Obama voters suffer the most. I am not in a charitable mood on this point. The Obama voters voted for more freebies. It is time that we say no - we are no longer going to participate in that locust destruction.

Willful ignorance has almost destroyed our beloved country. It is ignorance and ignorance alone that allows DC to continue its path. NCCS.net has dvds that will take you step by step to show the cure. Hillsdale College has online Constitution and History classes.

Have to agree with #1. Something about this current situation puts me in mind of that horrible scene near the end of ´Old Yeller´.

When Bush shakes Obama’s hand at the ceremony, our 43rd and 44th presidents will share something in common: A job approval rating of 47 percent. On the surface, it looks like another failure to connect the dots. Russia’s intelligence service, the FSB, warned the FBI in 2011 about a young Chechen named Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who they believed had become radicalized and was prepared to join an underground organization in Russia. The FBI interviewed the man, searched its databases and found nothing, and closed the case the same year. Two years later, Tamerlan and his younger brother, Dzhokhar, bombed the Boston Marathon. Already two members of Congress have asked the Obama administration for answers about the FBI’s empty investigation. On Saturday, Rep. Michael McCaul (R–Texas),

It took less than 4 1/2 years of the Obama presidency for President George W. Bush to mount his comeback. While doing absolutely nothing on his own behalf (he’s been the most silent ex-president in my lifetime), his approval is up to 47 percent according to The Post/ABC poll. That’s up 14 points from his final poll in office. For comparison’s sake President Obama’s RCP average is a tad over 49 percent. Why the shift? Aside from the “memories fade” point, many of his supposed failures are mild compared to the current president (e.g. spending, debt). Unlike Obama’s tenure,

Cambridge — Dzhokhar Tsarnaev looked calmly on as the first bomb exploded on Boylston Street during the Boston Marathon April 15. Days later, a suspected carjacker boasted about the bombings, according to new details from a criminal complaint issued Monday, April 22. (Snip)Seven hours later, police responded to a report of an armed carjacking in Cambridge. According to the complaint, the victim was sitting in his car when he heard a tapping on the passenger-side window. The man rolled down his window, and the man reached in, opened the door, and got inside. The man reportedly told the victim,

What’s the difference between righteous and self-righteous? Last Wednesday, President Obama stood alongside victims of gun violence and spoke about the defeat of the Manchin-Toomey bill, which would have expanded background checks for gun buyers. Obama’s insistence that America has seen “too many tragedies” of late is righteous (“characterized by uprightness or morality,” according to dictionary.com). But he went on to describe a moral split that posited on his side “those who care deeply about preventing more and more gun violence” and on the other, “those who blocked these common-sense steps to help keep our kids safe.”

The deep disappointment coming from the White House, gun control advocates and the parents of Newtown, Conn., at the demise of the Manchin-Toomey Senate compromise gun bill is understandable. But some of the rhetoric following the amendment’s defeat has been over the top. Supporters of stricter gun control have called those who voted against the measure “cowards,” a strange label for senators who voted contrary to what 85 percent of the country, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and virtually all in the media wanted. In the widening federal probe into the Boston Marathon bombing, authorities are uncovering growing evidence of 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev´s violent dark side and increasing disaffection and disgust with things Christian and American. Tsarnaev, the older of the two brothers accused of detonating explosives near the marathon finish line, died during a firefight with police early Friday morning. Authorities are working to uncover the details of Tsarnaev´s life in the hope their search will help provide a motive for the deadly bombing.

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Days after they were badly hurt in a car accident, Jacinto Cruz and Jose Rodriguez-Saldana lay unconscious in an Iowa hospital while the American health care system weighed what to do with the two immigrants from Mexico. The men had health insurance from jobs at one of the nation´s largest pork producers. But neither had legal permission to live in the U.S., nor was it clear whether their insurance would pay for the long-term rehabilitation they needed.

Everyone presumes that Sen. Chuck Schumer, the media-hungry Democrat from New York, wants to be the next Senate majority leader. His performance in the negotiations over the Gang of Eight immigration plan should bolster his case for an eventual promotion. Schumer has been at the center of crafting a bill for a mass amnesty of undocumented immigrants that has high-profile, bipartisan support and a chance of becoming law. He had the shrewdness to realize what he needed to do to make the bill viable. If you are going to have any hope of passing a sweeping amnesty bill

The mainstream press is filled with stories and opinion pieces about the connection between the Boston bombings and the immigration reform bill. The point in common is a near-total failure to grapple with the weightiest Boston-related argument critics of the bill have offered–that the terror attack is an extreme symptom of a far broader problem, the breakdown of our system of patriotic assimilation. While story after story recounts Ann Coulter’s sarcastic tweet (“It’s too bad Suspect #1 won’t be able to be legalized by Marco Rubio, now.”), not a single story sees fit to discuss

One strange aspect of the older Boston bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev´s back story is a trip he made to his homeland — Russia, specifically Dagestan and Chechnya — last year. Sources have told The New York Times that the trip will be examined thoroughly by federal investigators. So what do we know about the trip so far? Tamerlan went to Russia early last year and returned around six months later on July 27. According to one interview with his father, he went to renew his passport.

In Obama´s Audacity of Hope, he stated, "I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in any ugly direction." He also asserted in Bob Woodward´s Obama´s Wars, "We can absorb [another] terrorist attack." These are two straightforward statements that raise the question of whether a man who has been seemingly obsessed with reaching out to "the Muslim world" since taking office is capable of fulfilling his duty as commander-in-chief to keep America safe and secure.

George W. Bush will return to the spotlight this week for the dedication of his presidential library, an event likely to trigger fresh public debate about his eight fateful years in office. But he reemerges with a better public image than when he left Washington more than four years ago. Since then, Bush has absented himself from both policy disputes and political battles. A new Washington Post-ABC News poll suggests that the passage of time and Bush’s relative invisibility have been beneficial to a chief executive who left office surrounded by controversy.

In debate classes or law school, it is often referred to as the ‘arguing against the non-existing opponent’ tactic. The way it works is you imply your opponent is making an outlandish, unsavory claim (though he isn’t), hoping others will run with it or, at worst, that your opponent won’t sufficiently correct it and the claim sticks. To illustrate, imagine Sally is arguing in favor of marijuana’s legalization against Tom. In the middle of the debate, Tom suddenly shrieks: “Well, Sally, you can talk about legalizing marijuana all you want but I just don’t believe

THE graying man flashing fury in the Rose Garden on behalf of the Newtown families, the grieving man wiping away tears after speaking at the Boston memorial service, is not the same man who glided into office four years ago. President Obama has watched the blood-dimmed tide drowning the ceremony of innocence, as Yeats wrote, and he has learned how to emotionally connect with Americans in searing moments, as he did from the White House late Friday night after the second bombing suspect was apprehended in Boston.

President Obama´s sequester scare strategy has been a political flop, but his government keeps trying. The latest gambit is to force airline flight delays until enough travellers stuck on tarmacs browbeat enough Republicans to raise taxes again. This week the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) began furloughing each of its air-traffic controllers for one day out of every 10 to achieve roughly $600 million in savings this fiscal year. The White House dubiously claims that the furloughs are required by the sequester spending cuts enacted in 2011.

The two suspects in the Boston Marathon bombings were not licensed to have the firearms they used in several shootouts with police on Friday, Reuters reported Sunday night. The news that the suspects were not authorized to own firearms will likely add fuel to calls for tougher gun laws – an issue that was put on the back-burner last week after the Senate blocked the central elements of a gun-control package backed by President Obama. Because Massachusetts state law bars handgun ownership for those younger than 21, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, age 26, was the only brother who could have

Following the attack in Boston, some politicians, including Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Dan Coats (R-IN), advised slowing down immigration reform legislation in order to allow further debate and not make rushed decisions based on emotions. In an interview with Bloomberg’s Trish Regan, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) criticized his colleagues, deeming the argument “ludicrous.” Grassley’s remarks on Friday immediately caught attention when he said, “Given the events of this week, it’s important for us to understand the gaps and loopholes in our immigration system.” “How can individuals evade authorities and plan such attacks on our soil?” he asked.
