| Cambridge, Mass. - ´We have now an American political party and a European one. Not all Americans who vote for the European party want to become Europeans. But it doesn´t matter because that´s what they´re voting for. They´re voting for dependency, for lack of ambition, and for insolvency." Few have thought as hard, or as much, about how democracies can preserve individual liberty and national virtue as the eminent political scientist Harvey Mansfield. When it comes to assessing the state of the American experiment in self-government today, his diagnosis is grim, and he has never

This is long but well worth reading to the end, something I usually do not do. This man is upbeat about the USA and if and when we can get rid of that moron in the WH, we will have a chance to vote for and elect. Someone who loves our country and is not a gimmee country yet but is trending that way. I so agree with that - there should be no permanent welfare - work can be found and those who don´t want work can starve.

A pity these so-called ivy league educated ´people´ can´t understand this is a Republic - and just because the libtards want a democracy so they can destroy the Republic, doesn´t make it so. As a number of these nimrods point out though, you aren´t going to dissuade libtards with soft words or a political process. It´s all about power and they have to be destroyed if the Republic is to survive.

What is happening to America is what happens to democracies, representative and otherwise. The majority of the people lack the virtue and the wisdom to govern themselves responsibly. It is an old story, known only too well to the ancient Greeks. The demos disorders society, bankrupts the treasury, destroys respect for authority, undermines all forms of legitimacy, and results in chaos and anarchy that requires tyranny to control. Plato discusses this in Book VIII of Republic. Leftist oligarchy fantasies, e.g. rule by an elite, are based upon ignorance or misunderstanding of history, for the elite invariably becomes corrupt, makes a mess of things and is in turn overthrown. In a way, civilization contains its own internal contradictions and seeds of disorder. Recipients of its benefits lose or never acquire the ability to distinguish fantasy from reality. They take everything that already exists for granted, as though it were inevitable and necessary and self-sustaining. This is one reason for the gnostic hatred Leftists manifest for everything that actually exists, and why they place their bets on the future, i.e. fantasy.

Terrorism: As Syria´s Islamist rebels merge with al-Qaida, Secretary of State John Kerry mulls more U.S. support for them. Can anyone explain what President Obama is doing to the Mideast? ´How´s that hopey changey stuff workin´ out for ya?" Sarah Palin famously asked, mocking Obama´s campaign slogan. The same could be asked of "that Arab Spring stuff," largely sparked by President Obama´s 2009 Cairo University speech seeking "a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world." For over three decades, Egypt was a key U.S. ally, first under Anwar Sadat, who paid with his life,

Media Bias: A basketball coach who shoves and curses at his players merits constant coverage by a media also transfixed by Newtown. But a Philadelphia doctor on trial for murdering a woman and seven babies? It´s ignored. Those who get their news from the three major networks have probably not heard of Dr. Kermit Gosnell, now on trial in Philadelphia, charged with seven counts of first-degree murder and one count of third-degree murder for killing seven babies who survived abortions and a woman who died after a botched pain-killer injection. President Obama is pitching his new budget proposal as a fiscal peace offering to Republicans, but the details suggest everyone should expect more conflict. The fiscal 2014 plan he released Wednesday is a very slightly modified version of his previous budgets that reduces the deficit by raising taxes and trading defense cuts for more domestic spending. The real news is that his budget ratifies much of the spending increase of the first term and tries to lock it in. He wants the feds to spend $3.78 trillion next year ($11,944 per American), which would still be 22.2% of national

Fiscal Policy: Shorn of its accounting gimmicks, the president´s budget isn´t a "balanced" plan to get the debt crisis under control. It´s a monument to fiscal irresponsibility. With much fanfare and a lot of media hype, President Obama unveiled his latest budget plan — two months late. An IBD review of Obama´s budget finds that, among other things, it: • Boosts spending and deficits over the next two years. Obama´s own budget numbers show that he wants to hike spending over the next two years by $247 billion compared with the "baseline," which even after

For young Europeans, it must be difficult to imagine the routine deprivation that existed behind the Iron Curtain when Margaret Thatcher came to power. As a refugee in London during the Eighties, I had to smuggle necessities to my family in Poland: toothpaste, shampoo, washing powder and, hidden in the parcels, miniature editions of books that were banned there. Occasionally, these were found and confiscated – including, in 1984, a copy of Nineteen Eighty-Four. Mrs Thatcher’s role in changing all this cannot be overstated. For those behind the Iron Curtain, she was

In the immigration-reform legislation soon to be released by the Senate’s Gang of Eight, there will be a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants — but it will require proof of the border’s having been secured, and it will involve an arduous process that could easily take two decades for those eligible. The mark-up process for the Gang’s legislation will begin during the week of May 6. There will be no limits placed on how many amendments can be added, according to a source familiar with the negotiations. These are the broad outlines of the legislation: Modernizing the legal-immigration system.

RUSH: We played for you a sound bite of Melissa Harris-Perry. Melissa Harris-Perry is a professor at Tulane. She has a show at PMSNBC. She is a standard-issue leftist. There is nothing extraordinary about her, and by that I mean she´s not extreme; she´s not way, way far out there. She is a mainstream American liberal today. Folks, that´s very important. This is the woman who thinks that the whole notion that kids belong to their parents is outdated. That idea is cockamamie. The government is really the parent.

Ashley Judd is a Hollywood actress who thought about, and decided against, running as a Democrat for U.S. Senate in Kentucky, where Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is up for a sixth term next year. That´s about all we knew about her until yesterday, except for one other fact that led us to suspect she was kind of strange. Back in December a reader sent along a headline from a Kentucky paper describing Judd as "Still Mum" on a prospective candidacy. "Mum" is easily recognizable as the British translation of "Mom," so we thought this might make for an amusing juxtaposition.

Because the BBC had a series of run-ins with Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s, and is hardly well disposed towards the Tory-led Coalition, I had expected it to pour buckets of cold water over the memory of the Iron Lady. To begin with, I was pleasantly surprised. The tone of BBC News 24 on Monday afternoon was slightly awed, even reverential, as is befitting when any great figure dies. Some of the newscasters even wore a black tie. A picture of Margaret Thatcher was shown as silence was observed.

The murder trial of abortionist Kermit Gosnell largely is being ignored by the mainstream media, even in the face of grisly testimony, such as what we heard yesterday. Life News reports: ...a former employee described how she heard a baby scream during a live-birth abortion. Abortion clinic employee Sherry West described an incident which "really freaked (her) out" and related to the jury how she heard a child who was born alive following an abortion scream.

HARTFORD, Conn. -- With time running out on the chance to pass gun control legislation, President Barack Obama on Monday warned Congress not to use delaying tactics against tighter regulations and told families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims that he´s "determined as ever" to honor their children with tougher laws. Obama´s gun control proposals have run into resistance on Capitol Hill, leaving their fate in doubt. Efforts by Senate Democrats to reach compromise with Republicans over expanding required federal background checks have yet to yield an agreement, and conservatives were promising to try

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

The sequester may have many across the country singing the blues, but for President Obama, it was all about Memphis Soul. Even with the threat of furloughs and government cuts sparked by the sequester, Obama took the time to enjoy a star-studded concert at the White House tonight. The White House celebration of Memphis Soul music in the East Room--which included special guest appearances by Queen Latifah and Justin Timberlake--is likely to rile Obama´s Republican foes. Some conservatives have called on Obama to give up golf, especially since popular public tours of the White House have been canceled because of

Decrying the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act as way too complex, he warned the acting Medicare director that Obamacare is "so complicated and if it isn´t done right the first time, it will just simply get worse."

In the message he issued along with his budget proposal on Wednesday morning, President Barack Obama said he wants to see 4-year-old children in the United States enrolled in public schools. Obama said America needs to start enrolling 4-year-olds to make sure the children are “better prepared for the demands of the global economy” and to help parents save on "child-care costs." After saying the United States needs to “equip our citizens with the skills and training” to fill jobs in manufacturing, energy and infrastructure, Obama said, “And that has to start at the earliest possible age.”

Although the first votes on gun -control legislation have yet to be cast, by some measures the National Rifle Association has already won. Obama’s ambitious plans to ban assault weapons and limit magazine capacities are off the table, while the NRA suggested it could support the most likely outcome -- expanded background checks -- as recently as 1999. The NRA claims that the president’s efforts have triggered a fundraising surge and boosted its membership from 4 million to nearly 5 million.

Liberals descended on Pennsylvania Avenue Tuesday to protest President Barack Obama´s decision to include entitlement cuts in his upcoming budget, delivering 2 million petitions demanding the White House back off its support for the chained CPI. As we reported this weekend, liberals have been seething over the inclusion of the chained CPI in Obama´s budget, which they see as a huge betrayal by the Democratic president. Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius conceded Monday that implementing the Affordable Care Act has been more complicated and frustrating than the Obama administration expected, largely due to Republicans who have opposed the law´s state-based exchanges and Medicaid expansion. "The politics has been relentless and that continues," Sebelius said. "There was some hope that once the Supreme Court ruled in July, and then once an election occurred there would be a sense that, ´This is the law of the land, let´s get on board, let´s make this work.´"

In a stunning end to one of the most aggressively unsuccessful tenures in retail history, JCPenney (JCP) last night announced that CEO Ron Johnson would be leaving effective immediately. Myron Ullman, Johnson´s predecessor at JCPenney, takes office as CEO. When Johnson was initially wooed by JCPenney, it was to serve as CEO with Ullman as Chairman. In January 2012, Ullman was unceremoniously removed from the board. Gone with Ullman was any control the Board of Directors had over Ron Johnson and his control of JCPenney resources.
