| California may find itself in a disastrous fiscal situation, but that won’t stop California’s newly-empowered unions from flexing their muscle. In the aftermath of the failure of Proposition 32, which would have prevented public sector unions from funding politicians, the unions are celebrating their confirmed power by striking. The latest strikes started today with the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 63, which shut down the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are the busiest ports in the United States.

Comments: Here we have more criminal behavior from the esteemed members of the unions.

If only it were that simple, #2.
My younger brother saw the waste, fraud and abuse that goes on at Long Beach: his ship waited nearly 3 days to load a shipment of wheat. The reason? A union-mandated supervisor couldn´t be located. Never mind that there was one (two? three?) available on nearby piers - the union has their own list of requirements that would make most banks blush.
And so here we are - unions are now shutting down two major west coast ports. This reeks of the air traffic controllers´ strike. Too bad we don´t have the leadership now that was shown then.

Once the Panama Canal is widened, then freight will go to Houston rather than LA. There´s also a railroad project in Columbia which will compete with the Panama Canal. The days of west coast ports are numbered.

Some more conservative counties, far from the madding crowd, should be allowed to secede.
Like that will happen.

On the Pacific they have Mexico and Canada. The article only gives Los Angeles and Long Beach, so maybe the other Pacific ports are options.
Capacity is probably a huge issue besides simple logistics.

1. This is national security. Nationalize the operation of the ports ´til adults from the union step forward. 2. Intermodal ports are huge investments that are also constrained by geography. There are none in Kansas, for example. Significant idle capacity isn´t available in this or most capital-intensive industries. 3. Sending west-coast cargoes to Gulf or other ports isn´t feasible. Locomotives, well cars, double-stacks, and intermodal railyards at the other end are also not sitting there waiting. 4. The biggest problem is the usurper in the White House. 4.

Extortion, pure and simple.
Having sailed into and out of Long Beach, it is huge and a marvel to watch working BUT these are unions and where there are unions there are thugs who want power. Massive container ships sit off the coast waiting their turn to get unloaded. You can see the possibilities for corruption there. Those ships are captive. The products on them must be delivered. The trains and semi´s that will deliver those containers are waiting and counting on that business to pay their bills.
The backs of the UNIONS must be broken and the criminal in them imprisoned for American industry to get fixed, period!!
Just FYI, in the cruising industry, California ports are considered some of the hardest to deal with in the US due to a) the unions b) the feds. Canada and Mexico are much easier to work with and seem much more happy for the business.

Ports like Singapore have through-puts that make LA/LB look medieval. Other modern seaports use bar code tracking and computerized and automated cargo tracking, while the LA/LB unions refuse to update, and insist on paper manifests. It´s the 21st century, guys, get with the program.

How long will Asian countries continue to accept American exports if American unions refuse to allow Asian exports into our country?

Exactly #4 and #17. Re-routing a container from a Chinese port is no easy task, especially when your container is one of thousands that needs to be re-routed. My inlaws company uses Long Beach and my mother-in-law is furious over this strike. Not only does this delay shipments but it holds containers already in the port hostage. You want your product put on a train? Too bad! These selfish, union scum secretaries make 100k + a year, have benefits, vacation and pensions. But its not enough! They want 12 weeks vacation and $190,000 a year. My inlaws would love to have 12 weeks vacation too-- though they are lucky to get a week a year. Looks like this may ruin their Christmas trip to visit us. The world has gone mad. Posted from my iPhone, please pardon any typos.

They start at $100K per year, and the medical is comparable to Congress, and their pension is generous.

Those that made the list include MSNBC´s Mika Brzezinski, Rachel Maddow, and Joe Scarborough. Are these three folks really more powerful than Limbaugh? Apparently so are Stephen Colbert, Anderson Cooper, Bob Costas, Katie Couric, Jimmy Fallon, Piers Morgan, Kelly Ripa, Howard Stern, Michael Strahan, Jon Stewart, Wendy Williams, and Anna Wintour.

Left-wing magazine Mother Jones made news this week with a report based on a secret recording of a Feb. 2 meeting of Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell with campaign strategists. Federal and state law prohibits publication of information acquired through secret recording, but a 2001 Supreme Court ruling gives publishers like Mother Jones a get-out-of-jail-free card. But whoever taped the private conversation can’t wiggle off the hook so easily. Whoever bugged the meeting room or secretly placed a recording device will be in serious legal trouble — unless he or she was one of the strategists.

Obama’s ambitious plans to ban assault weapons and limit magazine capacities are off the table, while the NRA suggested it could support the most likely outcome -- expanded background checks -- as recently as 1999. The NRA claims that the president’s efforts have triggered a fundraising surge and boosted its membership from 4 million to nearly 5 million.

Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius conceded Monday that implementing the Affordable Care Act has been more complicated and frustrating than the Obama administration expected, largely due to Republicans who have opposed the law´s state-based exchanges and Medicaid expansion. "The politics has been relentless and that continues," Sebelius said. "There was some hope that once the Supreme Court ruled in July, and then once an election occurred there would be a sense that, ´This is the law of the land, let´s get on board, let´s make this work.´"

Myron Ullman, Johnson´s predecessor at JCPenney, takes office as CEO. When Johnson was initially wooed by JCPenney, it was to serve as CEO with Ullman as Chairman. In January 2012, Ullman was unceremoniously removed from the board. Gone with Ullman was any control the Board of Directors had over Ron Johnson and his control of JCPenney resources. The state of California is reportedly considering legislation that would force group insurance policies to provide infertility treatment for gay and lesbian couples. Two men who have sex with each other for a year and do not produce a baby would be considered “infertile” under the proposed legislation. So would two women having sex. Since biology does not allow those without a uterus to conceive or those without a penis to impregnate, every year-long gay couple in California would potentially be covered by this new provision of California law.
