The first serious proposals from the White House to solve the looming "fiscal cliff" of tax rises and budget cuts appear to have been rejected out of hand by Republican leaders in Congress. Treasury secretary Timothy Geithner is reported to have offered a set of proposals that include increasing tax rates on the wealthy, a one-year postponement of scheduled cuts in defence and domestic spending, and $400bn in savings from Medicare and other entitlement programmes. The proposals (Snip)include a $1.6tn tax increase, a $50bn stimulus package and new presidential powers to raise the federal debt limit without congressional approval.
Comments: From the lefty Guardian. Boehner and McConnell rejected the proposals as "incomplete". And the "new presidential powers to raise the federal debt limit without congressional approval" couldn´t have been a big seller. Article includes description of the back and forth...
The Dems have planned to "go over the cliff" all along. It guts the military budget, which is what they want. It raises taxes and the MSM will blame the Repubs. Entitlements will see a cut, but the "entitlements game" is still on. Promising entitlements is how the Dems get re-elected. It´s essentially buying votes. It really doesn´t matter if there are cuts, they just get back in the game and promise more entitlements, and get re-elected. Democratic politicians have nothing to lose if we go over the cliff.
Sending Little Timmy to negotiate anything is shoving the Republicans faces in it. He is a nasty, slimy, sarcastic little pr#ck and I can imagine his utter disdain when delivering the proposals. I realize that politics involves posturing and negotiating but we are getting enough of that from the Campaigner-in-Chief. I want to hear more from Boehner and McConnell sticking to their guns and not wavering. There has been sufficient time since the election for us to realize we are screwed for the next four years. Please let us not roll over and ask for more.
Just say no. Go over the cliff and start explaining in no uncertain terms what a crap deal was offered. MORE spending??? Really. Even the idiots who work in the media will turn on the dems. Quit negotiating wth yourself Boehner. Tell them you will talk again when they get serious. Start leaking to the media. But the crybaby will give in, afraid to lose his office n 2 years.
from what I´m picking up ..... Team 44 is looking to set-up Boehner and company ...... minimal/´phased´ cuts, no medicare touching, tax increases, more fiscal stimulus pork-fest for Team 44 constituents ... banking on the news media to do their Vance Packard Hidden Persuaders thing on the team 44 majority voting sheeple.
Give the progs the wheel and let them drive us over the fiscal cliff. If they will not make meaningful cuts in spending, tell them you will vote as our esteemed dictator did while in the Senate, present, and let them own thIs abomination.
Stimulus packages which increase funds paid to government employees or government contractors, are stupid, evil, wasteful and counterproductive. For every ten billion you spend, three billion is for wages and produces about a billion in taxes.... and another day older and deeper in debt, but someone may gain some political contributions along the way... mentioning no names, of course.
Please remember that this debacle was set up by the cry baby caving to Obama giving him everything he wanted in last summer debt ceiling negotiations. Has he learned anything when he sees Obama doubling down on his demands? I doubt it. Since there never is a budget the only lever left is the debt ceiling. Never raise it and warn anyone buying US treasury paper that if they make loans to Obama it will be Obama not the nation they will need to collect their trillions from. The cry baby has the power of the purse. This is the only thing Obama doesn´t have. Use it to stop him!
Boner and McCon-us will cave, just like last time , you watch , Pelosi has more punch in her purse than the Grand old party put together . Nope , we´ve been sold out so many times , why does anyone even bother with it . Go fish and save yourself the heartburn .
The GOP should boycott the inauguration swearing in. All Media outlets with any spine should do the same. For the majority of real Americans who work for their living and love America, Obama is not their president. The Joint Chiefs should stay away too.
I´m sick of the pet names given to John Boehner and Mitch McConnell. Say, if you think you can do better, you campaign and get elected to a seat so you can do better.
The task at hand is large and we Republicans rip our own to pieces. I´m sick of it. How is it that the Democrats can stick together through all of the ugliness, corruption, and dirty politics but we Republicans (Conservatives and Tea Party) shred our own. I don´t get it. One hair is out of place and we aren´t voting for this person. When are we going to learn?
So if you have any pet names for the Republicans, keep it to yourself.
# 32 is spot on. 365 days a year ,Republicans tear each other apart on every talk show and blog , with the grandaddy of cannibalism being the primaries. The media plays the right like a fiddle. They know exactly how to phrase things or report half quotes so the right will become en fuego. Keeping the right in a constant state of agitation is their goal and the goal of some talkers on the right-for ratings. The Democrats always stick together or keep their disputes private. FTA- " Republican Representative Steve King said he and fellow conservatives could live with raising taxes " . "Conservatives might be able to figure how they can go home and rationalise a vote that included a revenue increase and or a tax rate increase," King said. Don´t know if this is the full quote from King, but, it´s the one the media picked. Boehner says no way, it´s " class warfare ".
Keeping the Bush top tax rates seems to be beyond the courage of the GOP. The next best option from the health of the country perspective is to revert to the Clinton rates for ALL and letting the extensions of unemployment benefits expire. There is frankly little current incentive to work a $40,000 a year job compared not working and collecting benefits. The disincentives will go away if the GOP doesn´t cut a deal. And the Sequester guarantees some savings, again if the GOP doesn´t cut a deal.
Re GOP unity the reality is that the present GOP establishment leadership is timid and ineffective - they are selling us out. This leaves us with only two choices. Take over the GOP or start a third party which leaves us in the wilderness for many more years of Rat destruction. I think the take over is the best choice!
#35 You are spot on! To succeed, however, the takeover needs to be from the bottom up. The top down approach of Ross Perot never had a chance due to the structure of the Electorial College. There is a good start in 30 states. The RINOs need to be removed from office. But, you will get Democrat replacements unless the new Republican is seen as a worthy replacement. Just look at the last election.
I too, agree with # 32.Has it occured to Repubs. that the reason they bad-mouth other Repubs is because of the helplessness they feel? Such is the behavior of the guilty. Cut it out!! You made your bed now TRY to sleep in it.
The Leaders currently in the Congress,Boehner and McConnell, are doing everything that´s humanly possible to do your bidding and if you really cared, reall, really cared, you would be e-mailing, tweeting, whatever, to support their efforts to save this abomination of obama´s "great plan" from becoming law.
It´s always the Lucy and Charlie Brown kicking the football proposal. Of course when Charlie Brown lands on his back, Luck can blame him for being a racist homophobe who want to throw granny over the cliff in her wheel chair and take food from the mouths of starving children, and let old people die, and let the rich get even richer on the backs of the poor and middle class. Works every single time.
The really offense part of the offer is to allow Obama to take over the finance controls reserved for Congress( the House that is) by the Constitution. The GOP problem hinges on the concept by the far right that everyone but they are the damn RINOs. How I hate that overworked four letter non word.It screams of self centered defeat before we even start. When will the truth sink in --that the far right is at only 20% but they destroy every effort to work together due to single issue thinking and self righteous destruction even if the GOP does win the presidency. Most GOP are center focused conservatives and all the independents voting with them are too.
Here´s a thought... Since the Republicans will be blamed anyway, I suggest that they go on all the Sunday talk shows and offer to give Obama EVERYTHING he wants. Say that elections have consequences and it´s time we let Obama show us he can lead. It will be a tough sale to the base but someone has to be bold. The only proviso is that Obama and Congress must present a fiscal plan in writing and in time to make it public prior to the first of the year. Above all, it MUST have his signature as well as the Democrat leaders in Congress. It will then be known that whatever happens will be their doing and theirs alone. That way we may be able to gain seats in the House and Senate to reverse much of what he proposed. Otherwise I believe we will lose seats.
BOISE, Idaho -- It was the crucial tip, authorities said, that helped them narrow their search for missing San Diego County teen Hannah Anderson in the vast wilderness 75 miles northeast of here. Christa John said it was "one chance in a trillion" that she and three other horseback riders came across Anderson and murder suspect James DiMaggio in the rugged back county. "Idaho wasn´t even on the radar for her," she said. "Nobody suspected her to be there." "If they would have been over the side hill a little bit, or inside their camp, we wouldn´t have bothered,"
San Diego County teen Hannah Anderson was not aware that her mother and brother had been killed as she was driven across several states and into the Idaho wilderness, San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore said Monday. Gore also said that the 16-year-old girl was being held "under duress" by James Lee DiMaggio. Gore´s comments are the first definitive indication that Hannah Anderson did not accompany DiMaggio willingly. Gore has scheduled a news conference for 2:30 p.m. in San Diego County. The girl´s father, Brett Anderson, and FBI officials are also expected to attend.
It was his tip that ultimately led the FBI to the campsite where James DiMaggio was killed and Hannah Anderson rescued on Saturday. Recalling how he first alerted state police after his group, on horseback, encountered DiMaggio and Anderson in rugged backcountry on Wednesday, Mark John, a retired Gem County, Idaho, sheriff, conceded it was his wife who intuited that the girl might be in trouble.(Snip)He and his wife noted that, as they rode away from seeing the couple, Hannah said aloud to herself, "Looks like we´re in real trouble now."
James DiMaggio´s kidnapping of 16-year-old Hannah Anderson, whom was said to have a ´crush on,´ could be a horrific case of history repeating itself, it has been revealed. DiMaggio´s father, also named James DiMaggio, shockingly killed himself 18 years ago to the day that DiMaggio was shot dead by an FBI agent in the Idaho wilderness. Hannah was found safe and is expected to be reunited with her father today.(Snip) James DiMaggio Sr. was also infatuated with a 16-year-old girl - James Jr´s classmate - and resorted to violence when she refused to run away with him,
A massive manhunt that spanned 1,000 miles ended in gunfire in the Idaho wild late Saturday afternoon -- shots that ended the life of the family friend who was suspected of abducting 16-year-old Hannah Anderson and killing her mother and brother. (Snip)The pair´s campsite was first spotted from the air, then law enforcement personnel moved in on the ground, said San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore. He said that there had been a "confrontation," though authorities speaking a short time later in Idaho declined to say whether there had been a shootout.
Perhaps people already knew this and I’m the first to catch on to the obvious. When Rene Stutzman from the Orlando Sentinel told me the editorial board had decided “what” content would be “permitted to be discussed” within the reporting of her newspaper, I had no idea the Senior Vice-President / Director of Content was African American. Nor did I know the editor she was talking about, Mark Russell, was also African American. It just never crossed my mind to ask.
Eugene Allen began his career at the White House in 1952 as a dishwasher. By the time he retired, 34 years later, he was a butler who had, literally, served eight administrations. In "Lee Daniels´ The Butler," hitting select theaters next Friday, a character named Cecil Gaines—starring Forest Whitaker and based on Mr. Allen—starts his job at the White House in 1957 and remains a butler through the Reagan administration.(Snip)"I liked the idea of his first day of work being in the middle of the Little Rock crisis," during which nine black students were barred from entering a segregated
On Tuesday the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit ruled that the Department of Justice can bring former New York State Senate President Joseph Bruno before a jury a second time on corruption charges. After his earlier conviction for fraud was vacated, prosecutors will now be trying him for essentially the same facts but under a different theory.(Snip)He´s also probably wondering why his onetime political rival, disgraced ex-Governor Eliot Spitzer, has never had to face a jury even once. While Mr. Spitzer was New York Governor, reporters began to ask questions about his use of state aircraft,
I wrote recently about the peek CNN´s Jake Tapper took into that dark room wherein the Obama Administration and its allies in the MSM have consigned the Benghazigate Scandal, and CNN followed that up Tuesday with a one-hour special. The re-run of that special will be a "must watch" only for someone who has not been paying attention to Benghazigate for the last 11 months. (Snip)It was little more than the restating of Obama Administration Talking Points
A Turkish court on Monday sentenced a former military commander to life in prison and dozens of others including opposition members of parliament to long terms for plotting against the government, in a case that has exposed deep divisions in the country. Retired military chief of staff General Ilker Basbug was sentenced to life for his role in the "Ergenekon" conspiracy to overthrow the government of Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan. Announcing verdicts on the nearly 300 defendants in the case, the judges also sentenced three serving parliamentarians from the opposition Republican People´s Party (CHP)
Florida is the New Selma, and not for the first time. On a visit to Tallahassee Tuesday, Jesse Jackson "used the phrase ´Selma of our time´--a reference to civil rights marches in Alabama that helped prompt change in the 1960s," the Miami Herald reports. By way of explanation, the paper quotes an earlier, ungrammatical comment the septuagenarian would-be provocateur made last month on CNN, where he "talked about an economic boycott to ´isolate Florida as a kind of apartheid state given this whole stand your ground laws.´ "
A top secret National Security Agency program allows analysts to search with no prior authorization through vast databases containing emails, online chats and the browsing histories of millions of individuals, according to documents provided by whistleblower Edward Snowden. The NSA boasts in training materials that the program, called XKeyscore, is its "widest-reaching" system for developing intelligence from the internet. (Snip)The files shed light on one of Snowden´s most controversial statements, made in his first video interview published by the Guardian on June 10.
The sales assistant who refused to show U.S. talkshow billionaire Oprah Winfrey a luxury handbag costing nearly £25,000 claims the superstar lied about what happened in the luxury Swiss boutique where she works. Speaking anonymously to Sunday newspaper SonntagsBlick, the Italian bag lady said she felt ´powerless´ and in the grip of a ´cyclone´ after Winfrey went on TV in America to claim she had been the victim of racism. Winfrey was in Switzerland in July when she walked into the Trois Pommes boutique in Zurich looking for a handbag to match the outfit she was going to
In a story that has remained largely under the mainstream media radar, Congress announced late last month that it would finally investigate the Aug. 6, 2011 helicopter crash in Afghanistan that resulted in 38 deaths, including 22 members of SEAL Team 6, made famous three months earlier when they killed Osama Bin Laden. Grieving family members insist that soldiers in the elite unit were placed in unnecessary danger by the recklessness of the Obama administration, whose actions they characterized as criminal. “We’re going to dive into this,” said Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT),
LOS ANGELES -- Oprah Winfrey says she's "sorry" a media frenzy emerged after saying she experienced racism during a trip to Switzerland."I think that incident in Switzerland was just an incident in Switzerland. I'm really sorry that it got blown up. I purposefully did not mention the name of the store. I'm sorry that I said it was Switzerland," Winfrey said "I was just referencing it as an example of being in a place where people don't expect that you would be able to be there," she continued. In recent interview with "Entertainment Tonight," Winfrey recalled a clerk at an upscale Zurich boutique refusing to show her a handbag. Winfrey said she was told she could not afford the $38,000 purse. Staff has added more text.
On August 12, Joe DiGenova, attorney for one of the Benghazi whistleblowers, told Washington D.C.´s WMAL that one of the reasons people have remained tight-lipped about Benghazi is because 400 U.S. missiles were "diverted to Libya" and ended up being stolen and falling into "the hands of some very ugly people." DiGenova represents Benghazi whistleblower Mark Thompson. He told WMAL that he "does not know whether [the missiles] were at the annex, but it is clear the annex was somehow involved in the distribution of those missiles."
Last week I wrote a column about the reality that House Republicans are ready to cave on so-called comprehensive immigration reform. There was a final paragraph in that column my editor decided not to use. That is the editor’s right for two reasons: one, every site has a voice they wish to adhere to interns of form and content; and two, he who pays, gets the final say. Ironically, what was omitted by my editor was not lost on scores of astute letter writers who commented on the piece. I would like them to know that I have the same feelings
IRS? A system of voluntary tax compliance cannot survive a dishonest IRS. Lois Lerner and company have virtually ruined the agency. For the foreseeable future, each time an American receives a tax query, he will wonder to what degree his politics ensures enhanced or reduced scrutiny — or whether his name as a donor, activist, or partisan has put him on a watch list. Worse still, when a high commissioner of the IRS takes the 5th Amendment, it sends a frightening message: those audited go to jail when they refuse to testify; those who audit them who do the same
In the wake of a rodeo clown’s anti-Obama skit this weekend, the Missouri State Fair is forcing all clowns to undergo sensitivity training. The state fair commission voted Monday to ratify the decision to ban the clown in question who wore an Obama mask as the rodeo announcer asked if the crowd wanted to see him get run down by a bull. The crowd enthusiastically approved, according to local media reports. But the state commission went further, saying it will require that before the Rodeo Cowboy Association can take part in any future state fair, “they must provide evidence to
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Monday that she will soon tour the nation and deliver a series of speeches to promote more trust in government. She made her remarks at an annual American Bar Association meeting in San Francisco. More specifically, Mrs. Clinton said she was launching a series of speeches on foreign policy. And as part of those addresses, she planned to speak about the need to restore faith in government, Breitbart reported. She also bashed voter identification laws, telling 1,000 members of the
On Monday, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told the American Bar Association annual meeting in San Francisco that she would be launching a series of speeches about American foreign policy in the “next few months.” According to Philip Rucker, White House correspondent for The Washington Post, Hillary planned to emphasize restoring faith in government – an ironic theme, considering that she was a member of the current administration presiding over the rapid decline in faith in government. The speech today was clearly a launching point for a 2016 campaign. She put heavy emphasis on bashing voter
The father of one of three Florida teens charged in a vicious school bus attack said his son is “sorry” for taking part in the July beating that made national headlines. As the trio headed to court on Tuesday, Julian McKnight said his son Julian, 15, has also suffered in the aftermath of the July 9 attack on a Pinellas County school bus after it left Lealman Intermediate School in the St. Petersburg-area community of Gulfport. “All I can say is that he had his consequences already, you know?” McKnight said. “This is life. I am sorry what happened
The U.S. Air Force said that a well-known drag queen group was invited to perform on base during a “Diversity Day” celebration because drag is a “symbol of gay pride and unity. But the performance sparked outrage among some airmen who called the drag show “totally offensive and inappropriate.” Jewels and the Brunchettes performed to a small crowd at the Los Angeles Air Force Base on Aug. 8, the military confirmed. The Air Force said in a statement to Fox News that “Diversity Day” featured eight cultural groups and was meant to “foster equality and diversity in the workplace.”
On Sunday, Trayvon Martin’s father was named an honorary captain of the Florida A&M football team. Tracy Martin delivered a speech to the team on Sunday, after which coach Earl Holmes said, “I told him I’d love him to talk to the team. He came out and he was very, very encouraging…[He] got a standing ovation from our guys. He talked about just persevering and told the guys to keep on pushing through the hard times. The message he shared with the kids was very positive and they were very responsive.” Martin will do the pregame coin toss for FAMU
