For Certain College Students, This Test Calls for a Plunge

| With graduation approaching this spring, Jessica McSweeney has a sinking feeling. A senior Human Development major at Cornell University, she has completed her required science and writing classes and looks forward to traveling this summer. But one thing stands between the 21-year-old Ms. McSweeney and her diploma: three lengths in the school´s 25-yard swimming pool. Cornell students must take the plunge in order to graduate, either by passing a swim test or enrolling in a beginner´s swim class. Ms. McSweeney, who hasn´t been in a pool much since grade school, is less than lukewarm on the tradition.

She´s got an even bigger problem: she needs a job and isn´t likely to get one in this economy. Swimming is the least of her problems.

it´s racist (in case you didn´t know). But wouldn´t it be ironic if in a few years we see an obituary published for a Jessica McSweeney listing cause of death as drowning. And she´s majoring in "Human Development"? If she´d learn to swim, then she could at least get a job as a lifeguard.

Being able to swim would be a far more useful (and potentially life-saving) skill than a degree in Human Development.

In and of itself, this is a matter of no importance. But it´s emblematic of the sense of entitlement young people have been taught to have by their parents. The real answer is, "if you don´t want to play by the rules of the college, enroll at a different college." But these young people were taught they have the "right" to remake any institution into whatever they want it to be and for the institution to not acquiesce is an injustice as if this girl or Sandra Fluke (who thinks a Jesuit school should throw out whatever it believes to accommodate her) is the analog of James Meredith at Ol´Miss in 1962.

Is it necessary to know how to swim to get a college diploma? No. But it´s a requirement at some schools (like the one Miss McSweeney CHOSE to go to and was lucky enough to be admitted to).
I went to a small private university. We were on the quarter system and had to take 6 quarters (that was 2 years) of PE. It was a bit more challenging because the school had us off several quarters on career development, foreign study and senior project. Did the idea of taking so much PE thrill me? No. Did I do it? Of course, and I´m none the worse for it.

I think the college should make them learn to swim - heck, every college ought to require students to pass a swimming test. The college should also require every student to learn how to safely use firearms. Those two things might be more valuable than any other thing they learn at most colleges.

I expect a lot of daily swimmers would smile at this. Especially thinking that if you swam a mile a day for about 200 days, a likely years worth, you would have logged 200 miles that year. Over many years of daily swimming at that rate, one doesn´t have to exaggerate to be able to say they have logged a thousand miles in the water.
Seventy five yards? Piece of cake. Take it from me though, there are some folks who will never swim. No need to go into why.
She went to Cornell though, she has no excuse. One more way for a person to disregard known rules. She is probably a real good democrat. Not a good way to start her working life when she has such Karma.

During the Korean Conflict I joined the Naval Reserves so that I wouldn´t be drafted and sent to Korea. After about a year I was called to active duty and in order to graduate from Great Lakes you had to know how to swim which I couldn´t. There was another recruit who was a high school swimming champion who worked with me until I was able to pass the swimming test. What a happy day that was! For some reason, I´ve always had a fear of deep water. Luckily I was sent to NAS Jacksonville, Fl.after boot camp and never saw a ship.It would be interesting to why I have the fear of deep water even today at age 82.

After listening to the latest secret recording made public by Mother Jones, there’s no question that Ashley Judd — and the Democratic Party — dodged a serious bullet when the actress decided not to run against Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).While I agree with The Fix that the dust-up over said recording of a McConnell campaign opposition research meeting is “much ado about not much” since such research is a bipartisan ritual, there was enough oppo gold to sink a Judd candidacy. Justin Timberlake concerts for King Obama… but no Blue Angels for Americans… KomoNews reports the following: SEATTLE — The annual summer Blue Angels show over Seattle has fallen victim to federal budget cuts. Seafair spokeswoman Melissa Jurcan said the festival received official word from the Navy on Tuesday morning that the fighter jet demonstration team would not be making the trip to Seattle for 2013. Sequestration prompted the Department of Defense to prohibit military aerial demonstrations along with other cost savings measures, and the Navy said it was cancelling all remaining Blue Angels performances for the year.

It´s a story that could be ripped from the headlines of the National Enquirer. A family feud. A multimillion dollar estate. Dueling allegations of fraud. Accusations of kidnapping, theft, and stalking. Tales of lavish spending that include a private jet chartered to transport 18 dogs. And in the latest chapter, ongoing in a Florida courtroom today, a wealthy mother so fed up with allegedly being asked for handouts that she has filed a restraining order against her son. MIAMI -- Lilly Pulitzer hosted parties in her bare feet and wasn´t afraid to get a little messy - just as long as she looked good and had fun, too. In the late 1950s, the Palm Beach socialite had time to spare and a wealthy husband who owned citrus groves, so she opened an orange juice stand just off the island´s main shopping street. Pulitzer needed to hide all the juice stains on her clothes, though. Instead of just putting on an apron, she asked her seamstress to make some sleeveless dresses

An attempt by Colorado lawmakers to ban welfare recipients from withdrawing their benefits at ATMs located inside strip clubs was killed by Democrats Thursday night, even though the state House’s third-ranking Democratic legislator supported the measure. Democratic Rep. Dan Pabon lent his support to the Republican-led proposal, offered as an amendment during a debate on the state budget Thursday night, because it would hew to a similar federal rule, according to the Denver Post. Pabon introduced a bill on the issue two years ago, but it didn’t clear the state Senate. State welfare recipients receive their benefits

Add the name of Michelle Lynne (ne Robert) Kosilek to the list of modern phenomena the Founding Fathers would definitely not appreciate being blamed for. Little did they know what havoc they would someday wreak by adding the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution to prohibit “cruel and unusual punishment.” Now comes Kosilek, a convicted wife murderer doing life without parole. He/she is claiming that it would be cruel and unusual punishment to deny him/her a sex-change operation — excuse me, “gender-reassignment surgery.”Not to get too graphic, but Kosilek is begging for elective amputation of a body part.

PLEASE don’t ask me this anymore. It’s such a silly question. Of course Hillary is running. I’ve never met a man who was told he could be president who didn’t want to be president. So naturally, a woman who’s told she can be the first commandress in chief wants to be. “Running for president is like sex,” James Carville told me. “No one ever did it once and forgot about it.” Joe Biden wants the job. Two very bad and extremely dangerous economic developments happened yesterday — and Wall Street appeared to miss both of them. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 40.86 points to 14565.25 after the Labor Department announced that the seasonally adjusted number of new jobs created in March was just 88,000 — far below the 190,000 or so Wall Street expected. The March figure was also less than one-third the number of jobs created during February. This led to the misperception that the job market tanked in March. It didn’t.

Duck Dynasty must make liberals heads explode. It is now the most popular “non-scripted” show currently on television. Its Season 3 premiere had 8.6 million viewers and a massive 4.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which as you might know, is quite popular with the advertisers. At the same time, each episode ends with the entire family at the dinner table where they pray before eating. Indeed, the Robertson clan is entirely evangelical. They take their faith in Christ seriously and exert quite a bit of effort preaching the gospel. The patriarch of the family, Phil, used to live

It must be something in the water at the State Department — every secretary sooner or later develops an insatiable yearning to be the guy or gal who finally unlocked the secret to Middle East peace. Now Kerry has the peace process bug. The State Department spokeswoman did her best to lower expectations. (“His diplomacy will be based on what he hears from the parties”), but it was hard to conceal what a fruitless endeavor this is. Indeed, it is downright bizarre that while North Korea is saber-rattling, the Syrian war sends reverberations through the region,

Art lovers, put away your wallets: In a surprise statement today, the Met said that it’s never tried to paint over rules requiring it to let anyone in for free. Lots of art connoisseurs know that the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s $25 admission charge is just a suggestion, and that you can get in by paying what you want, or nothing at all. But a lawsuit filed in state Supreme Court last November says the Met hides that policy from visitors. And two weeks ago, a former supervisor at the museum told The Post that he’d arranged for security officers

HARTFORD, Conn. -- With time running out on the chance to pass gun control legislation, President Barack Obama on Monday warned Congress not to use delaying tactics against tighter regulations and told families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims that he´s "determined as ever" to honor their children with tougher laws. Obama´s gun control proposals have run into resistance on Capitol Hill, leaving their fate in doubt. Efforts by Senate Democrats to reach compromise with Republicans over expanding required federal background checks have yet to yield an agreement, and conservatives were promising to try

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

More than six months since Ambassador Christopher Stevens was assassinated by terrorists in Benghazi, the Obama administration is still trying to keep a lid on information about the attack. Congress and the American people need to know what happened the night of Sept. 11, 2012. Who did the killing and what was their motive? Why wasn´t help sent? And why did the administration lie about who was responsible? Members of Congress have asked hundreds of questions at hearings conducted by several investigative committees, but many of the most significant have been left unanswered. Information detailing what happened before, during and Headline corrected.
