One bright spot of Barack Obama’s re-election was knowing that unemployment rates were about to soar for the precise groups that voted for him — young people, unskilled workers and single women with degrees in gender studies. But now the Democrats are sullying my silver lining by forcing Republicans to block an utterly pointless tax-raising scheme in order to blame the coming economic Armageddon on them. Democrats are proposing to reinstate the Bush tax cuts for everyone … except “the rich.” (Why do only tax cuts come with an expiration date?
Comments: We are definitely heading for the "fiscal cliff." So, GOP, who exactly are you going to protect? Your lifetime perks and pensions or try to shorten the fall for the rest of US.
No longer a big fan of Ann, but she did finally figure out the game being played by 0bama and the Dimms. Hopefully the Repugs will figure out how to not be the fall guy for the fiscal and financial disaster that awaits us.
The only way to solve the problem is for the Dimms to own the problem. They are in control whether we like it or not.
1) she doesn´t care. She is rich. Zippy is making her richer. 2) she doesn´t take into account the Repubs supernatural abilities to steal defeat from the jaws of victory, then caving (or by caving). Our Congress is complicit with zippy, not serving us.
The gimme money crowd reelected President Obama. If,less than 2 months later their taxes go up dramatically, their unemployment benefits cease, and their best friend loses his job, are they really going to say, "Its OK Mr President, we appreciate you raising taxes on the rich as well?" "Those evil GOP held a gun to your head." "Its a real comfort to us that the rich have to pay an extra 15% on the portion of their earnings above $250,000. Our effective taxes have doubled but hey, you have to give to take." I see them screaming bloody murder instead. Think of the marina owner who he promised some help. Is that how she reacted when FEMA offered to help her take out a loan?
Why is it that we don´t have the guts to do what is right -- NOW ---, instead of counting on the future to take care of it for us? GWB signed the campaign finance bill into law because it was politically expedient and he figured the Supreme Court would overturn it. Wrong. We sat back and let the Dems take ownership of Obamacare, figuring that the Supreme Court would overturn it. Wrong. And now we are to sit back and let the Dems take ownership of this economy because when it does tank even worse - we are 100% sure that in the future they will get the blame! Wrong again. We need to stand on principle, which means - no tax increase for ANYONE! Remember: Ann is the one who ridiculed and cajoled conservatives, telling them they had to bend their principles in order to nominate a guy who would defeat Obama. How did that work? Republicans need to stand united and firm on this. Obama and the Dems are the ones facing the depression. THEY are the ones who are going to need to deal. Reagan and HWB both got snookered into abandoning principles by accepting tax hikes now with the promise of spending cuts in the future. They (we) are still waiting for those spending cuts.
I heard from Judge N. (can´t remember his last name) on Varney & Co. yesterday that Wilson borrowed $100M to fund WWI and we´re still paying interest on that debt. Can you imagine? 100 years have gone by. We must still be paying interest on the Spanish-American war too.
Let the let have their friggin 3% tax rate increase,it´s a losing battle. They´re proposing it as a fix all even though we all know better,so when it fails the left will be left to blame.
But as I´ve said before you can kill this tax increase by putting into the law that the increase is void if Obama attempts to exempt anyone from it with a signing statement or exe. order. Dingy Harry is the real president anyway. Every day he says something else he´s not going to allow. Now he´s demanding a debt limit increase with no strings attached.
Since they´re going to cave anyway, I suggest that Republicans go on every Sunday talk show and say that they will give Obama what he wants. But ONLY after he (not Congress) presents a plan in writing for everyone to see. Obama thinks he can win the 2014 Congress by scapegoating Republicans on this. I say call his bluff. I don´t think he would present a plan and his press would be forced to report it.
Not good enough. If the Pubs vote for any such deal, they will partly own it. The only way out (and even that isn´t a very strong one, but the best under the circumstances) is to abstain - vote "present".
I recommend we take the dive off the fiscal cliff. This is the only way to get the mandatory domestic spending cuts. Once off the cliff the House (because that is where all budget matters must originate) pass a permanent tax relief bill reinstating the Bush Tax rates. Let Obama and the Democrats vote against middle class tax relief, good for 2014. Then, pass a second bill to relieve the military of 1/2 the mandatory budget cuts. Let Obama and the Democrats vote against supporting our military during a time of war. Another winning issue for 2014. I sure hope someone in the GOP Leadership reads Lucianne. This is a no brainer...the only way we the people will get the domestic spending cuts.
President Barack Obama is returning to The Tonight Show With Jay Leno. Obama will appear on the Aug. 6 broadcast of NBC´s late-night talker, which would mark his sixth time and the fourth appearance since becoming president. According to NBC, Obama plans to discuss jobs initiatives and the economy during his visit. Previous Tonight Show appearances were Dec. 1, 2006; Oct. 17, 2007; March 19, 2009 — marking the first time a current president appeared on a late-night talker; Oct. 25, 2011; and Oct. 24, 2012. Obama has made the late-night rounds over the years,
An American international politics publication has reported that the US Air Force plans to dispatch fighter jets and tanker aircraft to northern Australia in the next year. Foreign Policy magazine said it was part of a US strategy to dramatically expand its air defence presence across the Pacific and South-East Asia. (Snip) In a breakfast media briefing, he is reported saying the US would send "fighters, tankers and, at some point in the future, maybe bombers on a rotational basis" to Darwin. General Carlisle is reported to have said the aircraft would initially go to the RAAF base in Darwin
Most fishermen are guilty of the odd photobrag, but none can match this bloke´s cockiness. The Victorian fisherman celebrated catching a huge shark by climbing inside the gutted fish, poking his arm through its gills and posing for a joke shot with his knife buried between its eyes. In a world where every angler is pictured next to his prize catch with a thumbs up, it´s becoming increasingly difficult for intrepid fishermen to stand out. But this guy - let´s call him the Shark Slayer - certainly managed it. ´Arch´, who works at the Metung Hotel in Gippsland, was present when the photo was taken.
Washington - U.S. spy agencies plan to release newly declassified documents as early as this week about the National Security Agency surveillance programs revealed by former contractor Edward Snowden, and also material related to a secret intelligence court, a U.S. intelligence official said on Tuesday. (Snip) The documents would also include information about the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, the official said. That court operates in secrecy in making decisions on government surveillance requests. The Washington Post reported late Tuesday that senior U.S. officials said one of the orders
Washington - President Barack Obama has asked two senior Republican senators to travel to Egypt to meet with its military leaders and the opposition, as Cairo´s allies struggle with how to address the turmoil convulsing the country. (Snip) U.S. officials have been grappling with how to respond to the situation in Egypt since its elected Islamist president, Mohamed Mursi, was ousted by the military on July 3. In particular, they have struggled with how to handle the $1.55 billion in mostly military aid Washington sends to Cairo each year. Egypt has long been an important U.S. ally
In a significant victory for law enforcement, a federal appeals court on Tuesday said that government authorities could extract historical location data directly from telecommunications carriers without a search warrant. The closely watched case, in the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, is the first ruling that squarely addresses the constitutionality of warrantless searches of historical location data stored by cellphone service providers. Ruling 2 to 1, the court said a warrantless search was “not per se unconstitutional” because location data was “clearly a business record”
Washington - Secretary of State John Kerry said Tuesday that Israeli and Palestinian negotiators would convene again in the Middle East within two weeks and that their goal would be to work out a comprehensive peace agreement within nine months that would lead to an independent Palestinian state. (Snip) “Our objective will be to achieve a final status agreement over the course of the next nine months,” Mr. Kerry said. “We all understand the goal that we’re working towards: two states living side by side in peace and security.” As they resume peace talks that have been moribund since 2010,
Three former high-ranking Penn State officials, including the university’s former president, Graham B. Spanier, were ordered Tuesday to stand trial on charges that they were part of a cover-up related to the child sexual abuse scandal involving the former football coach Jerry Sandusky. After a two-day preliminary hearing this week, Harrisburg District Judge William Werner decided there was enough evidence against Spanier, the retired university vice president Gary Schultz and the former athletic director Tim Curley to proceed with a trial, which could start later this year.
Anti-Christian extremist groups like the ACLU, the Freedom From Religion Foundation and People for the American Way hate God. They also hate America. True America. These "progressive" outfits - along with like-minded politicos, judges, Hollywood elitists and left-wing media-types - hate that this great nation was expressly founded upon the bedrock precepts of the Judeo-Christian tradition. And so, in response, they lash out. They endeavor first to raze our God-blessed America, and then raise, from the rubble, a godless America fashioned in their own secular-socialist self-image.
Last week, Utah Sen. Mike Lee (R.) sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.), “informing Senator Reid that we will not vote for a continuing resolution that funds Obamacare,” risking a government shutdown if Lee’s objectives are not achieved. While eleven other Senate Republicans have signed on to Lee’s letter, other Republicans are denouncing the move in surprisingly direct language. “It’s not an achievable strategy…and it’s dishonest,” said Sen. Tom Coburn (R., Okla.). “It’s the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard of,” added Sen. Richard Burr (R., N.C.).
Republican U.S. senators pushed for more transparency on aid to Egypt, if not an outright end to the $1.3 billion per year in military assistance, as U.S. officials struggled on Monday with how to respond to the crisis in Cairo. Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has introduced an amendment to a Senate transportation funding bill that would end military aid to Egypt under a U.S. law banning aid to countries that have experienced military coups, and redirect the money to domestic infrastructure projects. Senate aides said on Monday that the bill and Paul's
Sacramento - Gloria Steinem, Jesse Jackson, Bonnie Raitt and Jay Leno have joined prison hunger strikers in calling for an end to California´s use of solitary confinement to control prison gang violence. The civil rights crusaders, singer and late-night comedian are among those who signed a letter sent Monday to Gov. Jerry Brown. The letter calls isolation units "extensions of the same inhumanity practiced at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay." The letter to Brown, to be followed by a demonstration Tuesday at the Capitol, was arranged by the National Religion Campaign Against Torture and local
Mark Levin, who hosts one of America´s top radio talk shows and is considered by supporters to be the people´s pundit on the Constitution, is rallying his 8.5 million-strong audience to demand an historic convention of state governments to halt the "oppressive power" of the federal government. The author of two New York Times bestsellers on the threats to the Constitution, Levin hopes his latest, "The Liberty Amendments," out mid-August, will spark the state lawmakers to tap a rarely used Constitutional provision to institute measures that would brake President Obama´s use of executive orders, bar thousand-page laws and
The former commander of special operations in Northern Africa told a closed-door briefing today that he was largely detached from events the night of the Benghazi attack as he was traveling at the time. The testimony of Col. George H. Bristol, USMC, Former Commander, Joint Special Operations Task Force-Trans Sahara, Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command Africa, had been eagerly anticipated by members of Congress. Originally, lawmakers had been told by the Defense Department that he had retired — the actual date is Aug. 1, an “administrative error” according to the Pentagon — and that they didn’t have
FORNEY, Texas - George Zimmerman, the former Florida neighborhood watch leader cleared of all charges in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, was pulled over for speeding in North Texas on Sunday, CBS DFW reports. According to the station, Zimmerman was armed when officers pulled him over on Highway 80 in Forney, east of Dallas. (Snip) The officer reportedly did not recognize Zimmerman, who was driving a Honda pickup. Zimmerman told the officer he was armed and was then told to put the weapon in his glove compartment, according to the station.
Arizona Sen. John McCain was the Republican Party´s 2008 presidential nominee and he still wants the keys to the Oval Office. But he is beginning to sound more like a fan of likely 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. "She´s a rock star," he said in a newly released interview. "She has, maybe not glamour, but certainly the aura of someone widely regarded throughout the world," he added in a reference to her work as secretary of State. McCain, reportedly trying to win back his reputation as a GOP maverick, was asked by the New Republic
Serial sexter Anthony Weiner’s wife partly blamed herself last year when her horndog husband confessed to her that he was at it again. Friends and family told People magazine that Huma Abedin was kicking herself at the time for bailing out of couples counseling and focusing more on their newborn baby boy. But, thanks to a new round of joint therapy that continues even now, the couple was able to put the relapse behind them. “They really became a unit, and she feels much closer to Anthony now,” a relative told the magazine. That’s a long way from how Abedin
President Obama has been rolling up his sleeves campaigning across the country delivering a surreal stump speech message supposedly aimed at the middle class: big government works, Obamacare is manna from heaven, the wave of recent scandals are “phony” figments of the imagination, and all economic problems are the fault of the Republicans. Conveniently, he leaves out the bankruptcy of Detroit, a city run by his own party for more than half a century. His message is so stale and unconvincing, that even The New York Times and Washington Post have noticed. Both papers, usually loyal to Obama, remarked that
Gotta figure her lead would be even bigger without Joe Miller in the field here. Her nomination for the taking? Alaska should be a top tier pick up opportunity for Senate Republicans next year…but their top choice of a candidate is Sarah Palin. 36% of GOP primary voters in the state say they’d like Palin to be their standard bearer against Mark Begich to 26% for Mead Treadwell, 15% for Dan Sullivan, and 12% for Joe Miller.
Embattled Internal Revenue Service official Lois Lerner and an attorney in the Federal Election Commission’s general counsel’s office appear to have twice colluded to influence the record before the FEC’s vote in the case of a conservative non-profit organization, according to e-mails unearthed by the House Ways and Means Committee and obtained exclusively by National Review Online. The correspondence suggests the discrimination of conservative groups extended beyond the IRS and into the FEC, where an attorney from the agency’s enforcement division in at least one case sought and received tax information about the status of a conservative group,
Sen. John McCain — a Democrat? There was confusion Wednesday after the Arizona Republican mistakenly strolled into President Obama’s meeting with Senate Democrats at the Capitol. The room full of Democrats — who happened to be meeting in the same room where the Senate GOP usually holds their weekly policy luncheons — erupted in applause and laughter as the former Republican presidential candidate made his entrance. As McCain, 76, walked out of the Dem-filled space, reporters pressed him as to why he stepped foot in the room.
In preparation for the release of Oscar-bait film The Butler, Forest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey, and director Lee Daniels (Precious) sat down with Parade magazine. The film chronicles a butler (Whitaker) who works in the White House through seven administrations. Winfrey plays the butler’s wife. In the interview, Winfrey explained her sadness that so few Americans know about the history of the civil rights movement: “They don’t know diddly-squat. Diddly-squat.” She then said of the historic use of the n-word, “I always think of the millions of people who heard that as their last
Colin Powell has admitted to exchanging ´very personal´ emails with a Romanian diplomat but denies having an affair with the much younger woman after a hacker threatened to release their intimate messages. The 76-year-old retired general told the Smoking Gun that he met Corina Cretu, 45, roughly 10 years ago when she was working as an assistant to the president of Romania. She is now a member of the European Parliament. ´After I left the Department of State in January 2005 we stayed in touch via email,´ he told TSG.
If we learned anything about Barack Obama in his first term it is that when he starts repeating the same idea over and over, what´s on his mind is something else. The first term´s over-and-over subject was "the wealthiest 1%." Past some point, people wondered why he kept beating these half-dead horses. After the election, we knew. It was to propagandize the targeted voting base that would provide his 4% popular-vote margin of victory—very young voters and minorities. They believed. He won. The second-term over-and-over, elevated in his summer speech tour, is the shafting of the middle class. But
