In an apparent case of rudeness being elevated to criminality, a 43-year-old Ohio man has been sentenced to 29 days in jail for mocking a ten-year-old girl with cerebral palsy. Canton (Ohio) Municipal Judge John A. Poulos ordered the maximum sentence for William Bailey, who pleaded no contest Tuesday to reduced misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and aggravated menacing, the Associated Press reported. According to the The (Canton) Repository, Bailey was captured on a cellphone video imitating the way the girl, who uses crutches and has trouble walking.

Comments:
Is this the way we stop gross behavior like this? Every jail in this country would be full if leftists were charged with their reprehensible behavior. Good parenting appears to be gone in this country.

The reason good parenting is gone in this country is that parents are not allowed to discipline their children. Those that try are charged with a crime by our omni-present government.

As the parent of a handicapped child, we both suffered ridicule from the ignorant, but this is crazy! We learned to rise above stupid ridicule.
Freedom of speech and freedom of expression seems to have been ignored by the Judge, and as such he needs to be removed from the bench for violating the person´s freedom to act stupidly.

Jerry Lewis made a career out of making fun of the handicapped, as did Red Skelton. Tim Conway pretended to be retarded on Momma´s Place, the carol burnett thing where her husband was a hardware store owner, and Tim worked for him.
On the old Andy Griffith show, Gomer was mildly retarded, as was Goober.Otis was the town drunk. and Pre3sident Zero said he bowled like a retarded person.
Lock them up!

The man sentenced is 43 years old! HE IS the parent! He deserves to go to jail. Nothing else in his 43 years seems to have made an impression. Atta boy, your honor.

Good. Wish it could be longer. What a mean cruel man, and he is passing that attitude on to his son. Disgraceful. Well done Judge.

Man kept doing it. What is the alternative? Punch his lights out and go to jail yourself? We´re talking about a disabled girl.

#6,

That would have been the best way to handle it in days gone by. Bailey´d get a throttling from the little girl´s father and that would be the end of it.

Trouble is, these days, Mr. Bailey would sue and win on the basis that he was unfairly picked on due to his own disability - Arsehat syndrome!

#5 and #7, the man did not break the law. He may be a horse´s patoot but his trangression was not criminal and he contends that his son was bullied by the girl´s family in the first place. We have no way of knowing. The courtroom is no place to handle this problem and if I were a Canton taxpayer I would be disgusted to know that my money was used for such a frivolous case. This is the type of behavior to be better dealt with by shunning the individual, not bringing in the police.

Disgraceful, disgusting behavior, but not the kind that demands a response from the state. Sets a bad precedent for more government intrusion without due cause.

In Soviet Russia you could drink alcoholic beverages on public beaches and at work.

In Communist America you can´t walk with a limp if you´re deemed healthy but stupid.

Free Americans of the past wouldn´t let this stand.

I don´t care if this guy was three or forty three.
I don´t care if this guy had the IQ of 400 or -4.

Just read a few other articles on this, so for those folks who think the law should not be used here....

This has been going on continuously, this was not a one time thing. This is how the grandmother was able to tape it.

The adult made a hostile environment for this little girl, and just like workplace hostility, people are protected by the law.

You CANNOT repeatedly create a hostile, intimidating environment in a public space.

While I don´t like big brother/nanny state, that is the law.

The guy was a jerk and deserved to go to jail.

That doesn´t mean it is good for our society that he DID go to jail. Allowing that kind of power to a judge is not in anyone´s best interest. The judge should be overruled and also fired.

Saying that he shouldn´t have been sent to jail is NOT the same thing as "being on his side." Taking a logical look at the end result of activist judges ruling to political correctness rather than the law does not make anyone a jerk.

Neighborhoods have (or used to have) ways of dealing with a jerk. It is also clear that only the people involved really have the history of both families to consider. Perhaps they really did finally have enough of being bullied by this family and were giving some back. Or perhaps not. We just can´t know and neither can that judge.

I was a bully once. I thought Charlie would be an easy mark, so I "went after" Charlie like the dog that I was.

Charlie was a farm boy far tougher than I imagined.

Once he had me on the ground looking up, he began to kick the breakfast out of me. He used considerable real estate to accomplish his mission of reinforcing his future safety.

Each of the two or more dozen kicks to my torso, and head, reminded me of what kind of behavior is acceptable in civil society.

Throughout Charlie´s exercise, he never said a word - but I got the message.

Neither one of us deserved jail, or a meeting with pistol packing authorities.

My bullying days were over and Charlie travels in a private jet these days.

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”

Gluten-free diets are all the rage, but they can be dangerous if not done right. What is gluten? It´s the spongy complex of proteins, found naturally in wheat, rye, and barley, that gives elasticity to dough and allows it to rise. When flour is moistened and either kneaded or mixed into dough, gluten molecules form an elastic, microscopic latticework that traps the carbon dioxide produced when yeast ferments, causing dough to inflate like a hot air balloon. Baking hardens the gluten, which helps the finished product keep its shape. Wheat — and gluten — is ubiquitous in the American diet.
