| EU: In Catalonia, Spain, secession-minded parties of different political stripes won a majority in regional elections. While those differences make secession unlikely, independence drives in Europe are likely to spread. There´s no mystery to the sudden upsurge in secessionist moves in Europe: Fiscal woes, monstrous unemployment and the unsustainable welfare state should make anyone ask why they should remain in a going-nowhere economy in a largely powerless state under the thumb of Brussels.

The EU promises material prosperity in exchange for giving up one´s language, culture and customs. Guess what happens when the money runs out and the material prosperity evaporates?

When you see a story about sessessionist petitions in the US, the tone is sneering and conclusion is that any signer is a nut. When you hear the tone of articles on Catalonia or Scotland seeking independence from Leviathan, the sessionists are suddenly thoughtful and have some merit to their argument.

ONLY a handful of peace-time politicians can claim to have changed the world. Margaret Thatcher, who died this morning, was one. She transformed not just her own Conservative Party, but the whole of British politics. Her enthusiasm for privatisation launched a global revolution and her willingness to stand up to tyranny helped to bring an end to the Soviet Union. Winston Churchill won a war, but he never created an “ism”. The essence of Thatcherism was to oppose the status quo and bet on freedom—odd, since as a prim control freak, she was in some ways the embodiment of conservatism.

Speaking in Ohio this week, the Youngstown Vindicator reports, veteran investigative journalist Bob Woodward recalled an “unflattering” story about a dining experience with former Vice President Al Gore. According to the local paper, Woodward “told an unflattering, but amusing story about sitting next to former Vice President Al Gore at a dinner, saying being with him was taxing.” “To be really honest, it’s unpleasant,” the journalist added of his experience with Gore. MOBILE, Ala. — The crippled cruise ship whose sewage-filled breakdown in the Gulf of Mexico subjected thousands to horrendous conditions tore loose Wednesday from the dock where it´s being repaired, lumbered downriver and crunched into a cargo ship. Wind gusts near hurricane strength shoved the 900-foot Carnival Triumph free from its mooring in downtown Mobile, Ala., where the ship was brought in a five-day ordeal that began when an engine fire stranded it off of Mexico in February. Hours later, four tug boats were using several mooring lines to secure the ship to a nearby pier.

At least 46 died Wednesday in and around the city of La Plata, Gov. Daniel Scioli said. Six deaths were reported a day earlier in the nation´s capital. As a result, two devaluations have been implemented in the last five weeks so as to obtain more bolivars per petrodollars. However, it all seems that despite the significant adjustment in the foreign exchange rate, which will spur the cost of imports and therefore will hit the people, the fiscal crisis will continue.

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church.
