The Oprah brand is old, wheezy

Marie Antoinette’s advice to the poor was “let them eat cake.” Oprah Winfrey’s response to world recession has been to release her own line of organic food. According to Forbes, she has filed for trademarking “Oprah’s Organics”, “Oprah’s Harvest” and “Oprah’s farm.” Oprah’s products include salad dressing, frozen vegetables, massage oils, skin care products and hair sprays--a little bit of luxury for her millions of devoted followers.[Snip]The rest of the country will have to eat and wash their hair with things that don’t have a famous person’s name randomly stamped on them

A nice plate-load of Brit snark about Oprah´s latest grab for publicity and retirement income, while hanging on by her acrylic nails.

Worth a read for stuff like this:

An article in Sunday’s New York Times suggests that Oprah’s obsessive branding of anything and everything (in a dystopic future, warzones will be dotted with “Oprah’s Landmines”) is actually a sign of panic.

Another round of snow and ice dubbed ´Winter Storm Pax´ is expected to coat Atlanta and other parts of the Deep South this week. Less than two weeks after some southern cities were crippled by a couple of inches of snow, forecasters have issued another winter storm watch for the Georgia area. With forecasters predicting snow, sleet and freezing rain for parts of Kansas, Oklahoma and possibly north Texas on Monday, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed has begun to treat priority roads and bridges to avoid another ice storm fiasco. The federal government pays for a $15 million ´wool trust fund,´ runs a $170 million program to protect catfish growers from overseas competition, sets aside $3 million to promote Christmas trees, funds another $2 million to help farmers sell more sheep, and plunks down $100 million researching how to get Americans to buy more maple syrup. And that spending is just three one-hundredths of one per cent of the Farm Bill that President Barack Obama signed Friday in Michigan. Liberal and conservative watchdogs alike are hopping mad at what they say are pork-barrel projects included in the five-year agriculture spending

The White House doesn´t like it, and neither does a prominent Senate Republican, but Olympic athletes who win medals in Sochi will have to pay federal income taxes on their cash bonuses. The U.S. Olympic Committee awards $25,000 for each gold medal, $15,000 for silver and $10,000 for bronze. But top athletes who are in the top income tax bracket , 39.6 per cent, will have to fork over as much as $9,900 of a gold medal payout. The Canadian government has proposed sweeping changes to its rules on citizenship. Under the plans, Canada would be able to revoke citizenship from dual nationals who have been convicted of terrorism, spying or high treason. Applicants would also have to pass a knowledge test and have proficiency in English or French. Immigration Minister Chris Alexander said citizenship should not be simply a "passport of convenience". The earliest footprints left by humans outside Africa have been found in estuary mud in Norfolk. Described as the most important discovery on British shores, the 800,000-year-old footprints were found in Happisburgh after being exposed by sea tides. Scientists believe the footprints are evidence of the earliest known humans in northern Europe, previously only revealed through the discovery of animal bones and stone tools. The footprint surface was exposed at low tide as heavy seas removed the beach sands to reveal a series of elongated hollows cut into compacted silts. Of the 50 footprints found, only around twelve were reasonably

Cash-strapped counties in six states are enrolling inmates in Obamacare health insurance plans as a way to shift costs to the federal government--a tactic that´s legal but frustrating for some Republicans who don´t want to see the success levels of President Obama´s signature law inflated artificially. In many cases jails are registering inmates so they´ll be better equipped to access addiction counseling and psychiatric care after their release, lowering the likelihood that they´ll return for more time behind bars. SAN ANTONIO — We recommend incumbent John Cornyn for the GOP´s U.S. Senate nomination, based on unmatched experience and decades of service to Texas. The theme among a bevy of challengers seems to be that Cornyn is a CINO, a conservative in name only. This is not just counter-intuitive but counter-factual. Various ratings — liberal and conservative — have agreed on one thing, Cornyn´s conservative credentials are genuine. Not conservative? The emergence of Twitter as a social media goliath has unleashed gossip and speculation as a media force. The long term consequences are unknowable, but in the meantime, with a far left president with a dicey past, it is producing some highly amusing results. Last night, President Obama explained to Bob Costas of NBC Sports why he wasn´t attending the Sochi Olympics, but the substance of what he had to say was lost in the controversy that erupted on Twitter over whether or not he was stoned. Yahoo writer Mike Oz took the high road, as would nearly any journalist, and described the president as looking "sleepy."
