Wal-Mart distances itself
from fire in Bangladesh

Dhaka, Bangladesh - The garment factory in Bangladesh where a weekend fire killed at least 112 people had been making clothes for Wal-Mart without the giant U.S. retailer´s knowledge, Wal-Mart said Monday. In a statement, Wal-Mart said that the Tazreen Fashions Ltd. factory was no longer authorized to produce merchandise for Wal-Mart, but that a supplier subcontracted work to it "in direct violation of our policies." "Today, we have terminated the relationship with that supplier," America´s biggest retailer said. "The fact that this occurred is extremely troubling to us, and we will continue to work

Comments:
*[ Associated Press video journalist Al Emrun Garjan contributed to this report.]

This is a tragedy of immense proportions that Wal-Mart should not ever be left off the hook for it to have occurred. When over a hundred innocent people, in obviously a sweat shop are killed and maimed, corporations should not be granted the excuse that "We didn´t know the garments were being made there." One can only hope that these impoverished people can find a law firm to hold the decision makers at Wal-Mart, feet to the fire. Somebody signed checks to pay the workers.

Don´t worry, OP. The unions will keep this one on the front pages of the compliant press until Walmart is forced to pay up.

Anyone who has ever been in the retail business knows that retailers do not contract with the factories where goods are made. They buy from wholesalers, who are the entities who contract with these factories.

Wal-Mart is the largest private employer in the world and Fox confirms what I thought: a number of retailers used this particular Bangladeshi garment factory and, in retrospect, should have been more vigilant in their sources. ABC singled out Wal-Mart to pump up the unions´ rapidly deflating balloon.

"Without their knowledge." Fat chance. Walmart has done more to ruin America than any political party ever has. They´ve driven hundreds of thousands of mom and pop retailers out of business, thus destroying small towns; by insisting that suppliers cut costs every year, they´ve driven manufacturing jobs to China and southeast Asia; and hundreds of thousands of Americans who once had good jobs in stores and manufacturing facilities now have to work at Walmart, which pays subsistence wages, in order to get by. Plus this year they couldn´t wait to open at midnight on Black Friday; they opened their stores at 8 pm, ruining Thanksgiving for their workers who had to prepare for the crazed hordes who´d be running in at that hour. I quit going to Walmart years ago and don´t mind paying more elsewhere for anything I buy.

Wall Mart is a success because of the sweatshops and cheap Chinese labor that creates poor quality products that undercut better quality products.

To shop at wally world and purchase Chinese junk only serves to shrink our GDP and devalue our dollar .

Boy the Left Wing Marxist Democrat Wal-Mart haters are out in force here.

Why are they not as diligent with other businesses who also buy from various foreign countries.

If the Wal-Mart Marxist haters (including the NAMBLA Press) could see any sense of ethics and integrity they would know many other businesses deal with China and other foreign countries.

Flip all your appliances, or any other expensive goods, over and see where they were made. Surprise!

But then how dare they bash the businesses who contribute to the Marxist Party who wants to destroy this country?

Robert D. Marcus became chief executive of Time Warner Cable at the start of the year. Less than two months later, he agreed to sell the company to its largest rival, Comcast, for $45 billion. For that work, he will receive nearly $80 million if the deal closes, a severance payment that amounts to more than $1 million a day for the six weeks he ran the company before agreeing to sell. “It’s not unprecedented, but it is rare and troubling,” said Robert Jackson Jr., an associate professor at Columbia Law School. “There’s something stunning about such big paydays for such a small amount of work.”

Chicago - Illinois´ Supreme Court declared one of the nation´s toughest eavesdropping laws unconstitutional, saying Thursday that the statute was so overly broad that it would technically make the recording of screaming fans at a football game a crime. The ruling is a final and decisive defeat for the Illinois Eavesdropping Act, which had made it a felony for someone to record conversations unless all parties involved agreed. The 1961 law violates free speech and due process protections, and is way too broad in scope, the court decided in unanimous decisions in two related cases focused on audio recordings.
