| Let the Blood Games continue. Only weeks after election 2012 and years before election 2016, in a routine interview, a glossy pop magazine popped Florida Senator Marco Rubio with an oddball question: How old do you think the earth is? Rubio responded a bit clumsily and noncommittally. Smelling blood and opportunity, the wolf pack bared fangs and chased. Their game is either to force Rubio to affirm a personal belief the earth is 4.5 billion years old—disturbing some of his religious supporters--or to mock and stigmatize him and others who could harbor any delusional uncertainty

Comments: Be interesting to ask nominal Catholic Democrats (such as Pelosi, Biden, Sebelius, etc) what they think of Biblical accounts and standards -- their actions indicate that they don´t, but they never get asked nor are they ever attacked by the press for their hypocrisy. Odd how this kind of lynching only happens to Conservatives....

Any GOP potential 2016 candidate who dares to stick their neck out are going to be riduculed as religious zealots. The Catholic Church is doing us no favors by claiming Christ was actually born 4 centuries before he was born. How did they come up with AD and BC on the calendar with a 4 century gap? What´s happening is this feeds the left´s charges that Christi s a hoax and if you believe in Him then you´re an out of touch kook.
This country is becoming so hedonistic that there aren´t enough people of faith left to battle the left´s false gods of government and materialism.
Liberals seem to be taking over the consumer economy in this country which is puzzling as to where they´re getting the money for it.Most of them don´t want to work but seem to have more disposable income than people who do.

Question for reporters: Before there was a sun, how lomg was a day? Before man defined a unit of time, did hours minutes and seconds exist? If something happens, an event for which no previous comparable event has been recorded, how do you define it?
What is a day to God? How do illiterate shepherds define or classify events, so that other illiterate shepherds can understand it?
Religious writings do not necessarily reflect our ´chop-chop, this is a defined unit´ lives. They may reflect experiences and circumstances familiar to the write and his audience. Therefore, the ´camel through the eye of a needle´ may speak of a narrow postern gateway into Jerusalem, known as the ´Needle´s Eye´, rather than an actual needle.
We don´t know. And it doesn´t matter, except for how it reflects on our choices and behavior.
Tell me - How does the Creation story affect our behavior, except to acknowledge that God is so far beyond our understanding that we cannot define or limit him? And if God did create everything in 144 hours, how could any scientist tell? Everything they ´measure´ is done by projecting their current observations of various physical existence into the past. How is this valid even by scientific standards? If this were a poll, they would be using a sample of at best 200 years to estimate 13 billion (Estimated age of the Universe). One part in 65,000,000. How is that accurate?

I confess I´m not following the issue very well here. What does believing the Biblical account in Genesis have to do with the age of the earth? Though some might fuss about a creation that took place over a period of six days, what does that have to do with geologic age?
I suspect the underlying question, not mentioned directly in the article, has to do with Archbishop Usher´s conclusion that the earth is only 6,000 years old. That, however, is not a ´truth´ declared by the bible. In no place does the bible mention the age of the earth.
Rather, Archbishop Usher, using the genealogical tables in the Old Testament, came up with the 6,000 year figure. Unfortunately, the genealogical tables were never intended to be measures of time, but of pedigree. Few modern biblical scholars would agree to such a use of the scriptures.

#1, the Gospel of Matthew says that Jesus was born under the reign of King Herod the Great, who died in 4 BC. So Jesus had to have been born before 4 BC. According to the Gospel of Luke, Jesus was "about thirty years old" shortly after “the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar." Tiberius became emperor in AD 14. A close fit, but not exact. That and a few more aprox references yield Jesus being born around 6 BC.
I was taught this in grade school 50 years ago. It´s not shocking, not scandalous, not news: it´s been known for centuries.

No. 15 has it right. A monk´s error in figuring the year 1 A.D. (there was no year 0 -- the year before was 1 B.C.) has been carried down for centuries. So if you think there´s something transcendent about ´´the turn of the century´´ (or the millennium) you had best recalculate. And what does it matter? Nothing at all. The fact of His birth, life, death and resurrection is what counts.

And about that gotcha question: here´s one way to answer:
"By using the radiometric dating system on the Diablo Canyon meteorite, geologists can say the Earth is 4.54 billion years old. That means that if the United States went $3000 further in debt each year since the beginning of the world, we´d be LESS in debt than we are right now, at $16 trillion dollars. Why don´t you guys start asking us about something relevant, like the national debt?"

it is interesting in this context to recall the issue of the steady state universe, which was for a while the compelled scientific position in the USSR. somebody (Stalin?) thought that people believed the universe had a beginning, any beginning, Big Bang e.g., then they would believe in God.

To answer #6. There are some "creation scientists" who claim the earth is only 6,000 years old, because that´s how far back the Biblical record goes, as far as recorded humanity. No one knows the age of the earth OR universe. Understand the Angelic Conflict and you know a previous creation existed in a perfect universe created for THEM, not us. That creation could have gone on for billions of years before mankind. Rebellious Satan took one third of all angels with him, and were condemned to the Lake of Fire created for them. Satan appealed the conviction, and God in His fairness, created man to resolve the conflict. Adam and the woman (she wasn´t called Eve until after she sinned) in the Garden could have existed there, sinless, for a million years or more! No time-line is given in Scripture.
Christian "creationists" can´t square with the Big Bang, however, the entire universe was created by God complete, perfect, and instantly, but rebellious angels trashed it. They also can´t accept that the earth is more than 6,000 years old. Understand the "Gap Theory" between Gen 1:1 and 1:2 and you will find no conflict between Physical Science and the Bible.

Like the proverbial monkey typing for infinity and getting Shakespeare, Mayor Bloomberg’s obsession with reforming New Yorkers’ health has finally produced a brilliant ad campaign. Posters are popping up in subway stations and bus stops giving statistics about teen pregnancy that show cute little kids saying things like, “Honestly, Mom … chances are he won’t stay with you. What happens to me?” and “I’m twice as likely not to graduate high school because you had me as a teen.”

A meticulous new analysis examines the benefits of government-administered socialism among a representative cross section of individuals. It is an insightful departure from the usual studies of socialism that analyze only collective benefits to society using statistics about such things as income quartiles and poverty levels. The new study is 27 pages and can be accessed as a PDF file via this link. As its author, I´ll summarize the results here. Julia, the president´s comic book heroine, is used as the baseline.

Pravda, Guns & America (AT, Jan. 11) quoted a Russian who advises: Americans: Never Give Up Your Guns, citing the bloody and tragic result of the Communists´ confiscation of arms after they came to power in 1917. The quotation has been echoing around the Internet, so here are more ringing defenses of the importance of the right to bear arms to the cause of liberty. We are being played; it´s time we learned the game. Conservatives have their Constitution. Progressives have their Narrative. The current battle for America is between these two concepts, and each side uses different rules to fight it. One set of rules is consistent with an unchanging objective: limited government and individual freedoms. The other side´s rules are as fickle as their goals, which are never fully disclosed beyond the equivocal references to fairness and hyphenated forms of justice.

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU), an imprint of the UN, is holding its World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT) from December 3-14, 2012. The stated purpose of the WCIT is to update the UN´s "global treaty" on telecommunications to deal more directly and comprehensively with the internet. Knowing who controls the UN, it is not hard to see that a primary aim of the updated "treaty" will be to give credence to the regulation and monitoring of online activity in ways that are desirable to the (authoritarian) majority of member states.

The United States will not reverse its descent into the abyss of financial and societal bankruptcy until the current political and governing establishment is replaced. That will not happen until the American people, who have been deliberately ill-educated and deceived, experience first-hand the early stages of the turmoil and suffering extant in Europe and elsewhere. While professing to care for the interests of the average person, the underlying motivation for the vast majority of the governing class or Establishment is first and foremost self-aggrandizement and the acquisition of wealth.

Were the average Republican asked for a succinct statement of his views on taxation, he or she might respond thus: “U.S. tax rates are too high for the world we must compete in. The tax burden — federal, state, local, together — is too heavy. We need to cut tax rates to free up our private and productive sector and pull this economy out of the ditch.” This core conviction holds the party together. Yet today the leadership is about to abandon this conviction to sign on to higher tax rates or revenues, while the economy is nearing stall speed.

What is so unusual in the academic world of today is that Professor Flynn´s latest book, "Are We Getting Smarter?" is dedicated to Arthur Jensen, whose integrity he praises, even as he opposes his conclusions.

Republicans in Congress are under tremendous pressure to cave in to President Obama’s demand for tax hikes by December 31. These tax hikes are projected to generate $823 billion in additional revenues, and save another $127 billion in interest payments, for a cumulative reduction of $950 billion in the national debt over 10 years, according to the left-wing Center for Budget and Policy Priorities. Ten-year budget projections are notoriously unreliable, but the White House estimates budgets for five years. By 2017, the administration projects that the national debt will be more than $21 trillion

Having four children 10 and under offers plenty of intimate, hands-on lessons on human nature. Sometimes, for example, in spite of Michelle´s and my best efforts, good parental instruction is ignored and hard lessons have to be learned. I´m not talking about situations that lead to enforced discipline, but rather those that result in sad and tough natural consequences. A good recent example for us is one that many families have experienced: the misplaced bike.

Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”
