As Alexis De Tocqueville demonstrated convincingly, sometimes a foreigner can visit these shores and see clearly aspects of our society that remain unquestioned, unexamined, and unnoticed by Americans. At Macalester College, an elite and highly selective liberal arts college (dubbed one of the "25 new elite ´Ivies´´´ according to Newsweek) in St. Paul, a junior division example of this phenomenon has appeared in the form of Bassem El-Remesh, a foreign student who shared with his fellow students his view of the state of discourse at that very liberal college
~~Out of curiosity, I went around campus searching for Republicans. I found two! One of them told me how annoying it is to be here and regretted that he came. Of course he is free to speak up, but there is a ratio of one to 100 of Republicans to Democrats. Put simply, Republicans don´t dare to speak up.~~
If you want to witness how intelligent people could march mindlessly in lock-step in an ideology as did the Germans under Hitler, visit a college campus. (In full disclosure, I am guilty of having several degrees from them.)
When Hubert Horatio Humphrey left office, he went to work for macalester college, if my memory serves me. Hubert was the straw up LBJs butt, pushing for the creation of those poverty programs...HHH also said, during the 1968 campaign, that every American is entitled to a MEANINGFUL job. Think about that one, you people! Every job has elements of boredom, overly detailed components, and wasted time. HHH didn´t understand that, because he was a career politician. HHH also evaded the draft in WWII, because he had an inguinal hernia, easily repaired, even back then. But he didn´t have it fixed, and remained 4-F, at a time when lots of famous and not so famous Americans were volunteering for military service. Jimmy Stewart, at the time of WWII was too skinny, flunked his draft physical, told the physician to wait for a couple of hours, ate a couple of big meals, and just passed, attaining minimum weight. Clark Gable served in the Army Air Corps, as a gunner, Ted Williams as a fighter pilot, who again served during the korean war, same job. Bob Feller, Cleveland Indians, enlisted in the U.S. Navy, as a gunner, and was a hero. Gerald Ford was an authentic hero in the U.S. Navy, saving his crewmates´ lives in combat. (And never talked about it, unlike the stolen valor guy, Jon Cary.) I could name many more, but I sort of got off the subject. Macalester chose a draft evader to teach for them. Too bad.
My daughter was accepted to Macalester in ´01. We told her then that it was too liberal of a college and we didn´t want to spend our money there. That was fine with her. A better value would be the University of St. Thomas, just down the street.
To me the most consistent characterization of academics (and liberals in general) is that they are perpetual adolescents. Perpetually funded by the Bank of Mom & Dad (including the State Bank of All Mom & Dads). Given lifetime tenure to freeload and mouth off. No rules to live by (but not allowing anyone around them to break their own non-rule rules). And utterly contemptuous of Mom & Dad and all the Mom & Dads who continue to fund them. Etc.
Want to know how to break the stranglehold they have on our schools and our culture? End tenure. Close the Bank of Mom & Dad and withhold payment to the State Bank of All Moms & Dads.
A boy who had aims beyond any expectations since the age of 7. 10 years later, most of the aims and dreams started to see light, i got a scholarship to study the IB Diploma in Norway for 2 years. Starting from August 2012, will be going to study on a full scholarship at Macalester college-United States, and yet more to see. My passion is politics, International relations, debating and lobbying. The word impossible does not appear in my dictionary. Proud to be Lebanese.
A further search for this young man led to his website. He does not seem like your average college student. But right now he believes the Israelis are the aggressors in Gaza and that those who are in Gaza are all victims. Not much different than the other liberals at Macalester, I´ll wager. If you read this and come up with a different conclusion, let us know.
I have a project for mark levin and other sturdy conservatives. I´m sure all these lib schools are politically correct regarding color and gender equality. How about suing lib schools who don´t maintain political balance in faculties? That would be 20 percent lib, over a third conservative, the rest Indy. Why not?
I appreciate this article. One of my kids, a straight A junior at a Catholic HS is bombarded with info from this school. I never before heard of Macalester College and knew nothing of its political leanings. Now I know and know what to do the the literature they send to us.
I have a suggestion. How about an exhibit on Tawana Brawley? If the purpose of the new National Museum of African American History and Culture at the Smithsonian is to remember racial controversies, as the proposed Trayvon exhibit seems to confirm, then how about an honest look at the phenomenon of hate crime hoaxes? Particular attention should be paid to the role of the media in both the Trayvon and Tawana materials. Unquestionably, the media stirred up racial animus, and these incidents both contributed to raising racial tensions.
A new report from researchers at Georgetown University must be horrifying diversicrats at elite colleges and universities. The report´s title, "Separate and Unequal: How Higher Education Reinforces the Intergenerational Reproduction of White Racial Privilege," gives away the conclusion of the study. Despite all the efforts at affirmative action, as a whole, the top tier of colleges is making racial inequality worse, rather than better. (snip) Sooner or later, history will note that affirmative action deeply damaged the progress blacks were already making in the pre-civil rights era.
To quote Nancy Pelosi, we can now see what´s in the Zimmerman-Martin case "without the fog of the controversy". I think the biggest lesson to be learned was from Rachel Jeantel, a friend of Trayvon Martin that testified at the trial. Rachel Jeantel has just had her 15 minutes. (snip)We shouldn´t turn away from this young woman, though, because she illustrates something so clearly. She doesn´t live in "another world" as her defenders claim, she lives in a prison.
President Obama has now united the world -- not a single country trusts us anymore, because our hero has shafted those who relied on us: Britain, Poland, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Israel, even Syria and Libya. (snip)Obama has been trying to break the Shi´ite crescent by arming and training the rebels against Iran´s ally Assad. In Benghazi, Ambassador Chris Stevens was killed while running Libyan arms to Al Qaida-allied rebels in Syria. It´s not working. The Russians are siding with Iran and Assad, and Iran´s steel trap is threatening to snap shut on the pathetic rabble we support in Syria.
Big labor is threatening to strangle the liberal San Francisco Bay Area in order to protect the principle that government workers should be insulated from the effects of rising medical costs and enjoy generous pensions to which they contribute nothing. Led by the ultra-leftist SEIU, the biggest union representing workers at BART and a progressive movement powerhouse, big labor orchestrated the Bay Area organized left to march demonstrate at BART headquarters in Oakland Thursday night. (snip) about 400 BART workers and their supporters, including actor Danny Glover, chanted for union solidarity
A few days prior to the 2012 presidential election, in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, New Jersey Republican Governor Chris Christie gave Obama a long, drawn-out hug and silently nodded his head in agreement to every word spoken by the always-opportunistic president.(snip)lately the Garden State governor has been the pure embodiment of Alinsky rule #12, which says, "Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it." What´s making the whole thing so suspicious is Governor Christie´s verbal rancor is mostly being directed toward a specific political adversary of the president, the outspoken Tea Party favorite, Rand Paul
Is the grievance industry trying to create racial Shroud of Turin? The Smithsonian wants to display the hoodie worn by Tayvon Martin the night he was shot by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman. Really, is this what we need now? A modern-day abomination: a Turin Shroud for race-mongerers? Will this become a place of pilgrimage for people looking for reasons to hate?
Shortly after the Sandy Hook one Elementary School massacre in December 2012, I took to these pages to gently chide the NRA´s Wayne LaPierre for his proposal to install an armed policeman in every school. In March 2013 I participated in a CCW (Concealed Carry Weapon) class. In May I received my CCW permit. On that day this semi-retired septuagenarian (I, myself) became a citizen carrier. My appetite for sound, reliable news and information about 2nd Amendment issues and the technology and skills of gunnery continues
Informed consent is a big deal in health care. And it should be. (snip) Once a woman says she wants an abortion, medical standards and norms change. If the process of getting informed consent involves making the unknown, known, the process in the abortion industry is all about unknowing. When I regrettably and wrongly had an abortion many years ago, no one at Planned Parenthood explained anything to me -- and I mean nothing -- about my baby´s development. No one even showed me a picture of a 3-month old baby in the womb.
San Diego mayor and veteran Congressman Bob Filner is a serial molester of women who enjoyed immunity from exposure by his friends in the media who "pretty much knew" about his abuses but chose to ignore them as a non-story. We know this because a brave member of the San Diego media crowd has admitted it.(snip) Scorn is the appropriate response. The San Diego media deserves a big helping of humiliation over covering this up. There is no profession more conscious of prestige than the media. Just look at all the awards they give each other.
As a black conservative tea party activist, I am extremely excited about Bill O´Reilly´s recent series of commentaries and TV shows addressing the hypocrisy and exploitation by the American race industry that has and continues to devastate the black community. O´Reilly boldly called out all of the usual suspects: Sharpton, Jackson, the Congressional Black Caucus and Obama. Eric Holder and others on the left have been whining and arrogantly scolding us saying that we need an honest discussion about race in America.
How is the U.S. like Sweden? In its low murder rate. That is, if you include in the statistics only non-blacks in the U.S. legally.(snip)In round numbers, there are about 250 million non-blacks in the U.S. legally. So their murder rate is about 1.0 per 100,000, or the same as Sweden´s. A murder rate of 1.0 is in the same league as the Europeans who like to call us gun-crazy cowboys. But it´s not the "cowboys" who are doing the killing. (In fact, Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming have murder rates significantly lower than the U.S. average.
White House insiders say President Barack Obama is in “a funk” about what he sees as increasing stagnation and failures surrounding his second term and some worry that the President is becoming more distant and distracted. “He’s not the same Obama that came to the Oval Office after the 2008 elections,” a senior White House aided confided to friends in an email recently. “I’m worried.” Chicago Mayor and former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel tells friends that the Presidency has changed his longtime friend Obama and many of those changes are “not good.”
Citing a potential al Qaeda attack, the State Department on Friday issued a worldwide travel alert and warned American citizens that the terrorist group may be plotting a strike in the Middle East, North Africa or elsewhere. “Current information suggests that al Qaeda and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond, and that they may focus efforts to conduct attacks in the period between now and the end of August,” reads a portion of the alert, which lasts until the end of the month.
In warning about possible al Qaeda attacks against Americans overseas, U.S. officials may have provided too much detail about intercepted chatter and the source of the information, and that may make it more difficult to get such tips next time, former and current intelligence officials say.On Friday, the U.S. State Department issued a worldwide travel alert for Americans, citing an unspecified al Qaeda threat. The bulletin said that the highest threat levels are the Middle East and North Africa, “and possibly occurring in or emanating from the Arab Peninsula.”
Executive Director of Mayors Against Illegal Guns Mark Glaze gave some ambiguous and potentially dangerous self defense advice Friday on “Hardball.” Glaze, speaking in opposition to “Stand Your Ground” laws, said in a circumstance where someone “comes at you” with an axe handle one should attempt to either “talk,” “fight with your fists,” “run away,” or “deescalate the situation,” but not shoot the attacker: MARK GLAZE: Very often somebody will come at you. They might want to have a fistfight. They might come at you with an ax handle. CHRIS MATTHEWS: Would you consider the guy with the ax handle armed or not?
[Video] Rapper Jay Z appearing on HBO´s "Real Time" with Bill Maher says that the black community wants upward economic mobility rather than a stronger police presence. In a conversation with former Congressman Barney Frank about police tactics such as stop-and-frisk, Jay Z suggests the stagnant economy and wealth inequality could cause widespread social unrest: "The real problem is there´s no middle class, right? So the gap between the have and have-nots is getting wider and wider... It´s gonna be a problem that no amount of police can solve, because once you have that sort of oppression
Washington - President Barack Obama´s top national security advisers met at the White House on Saturday to discuss the potential threat of terrorist attacks that caused Washington and its allies to issue travel warnings and close embassies throughout the Middle East. The United States issued a worldwide travel alert on Friday (Snip) Obama is spending the weekend at the Camp David presidential retreat after playing golf earlier on Saturday. His birthday is Sunday. The White House said Obama had received regular briefings about the potential threat and U.S. preparedness measures all week.
You don´t have to be gay or even Russian to feel the wrath of the Russian government´s homophobia. You could go to jail if you are "pro-gay," whatever that means. And that´s under just one of a growing number of hate-infused bills becoming law at a time when, as it happens, Russia is preparing to host the world in the next Winter Olympics. The perverse anti-gay legislation is inflaming an atmosphere of persistent intimidation and at times deadly violence against Russian gays and lesbians. The question now is: What should the rest of the world do?
An odd dark vertical line that was observed in the sky over Florida earlier this week has left meteorologists puzzled. The shadowy apparition was spotted and photographed by Mike Weight at Honeymoon Island State Park near Dunedin, Florida, Wednesday. Weight was walking on the beach at around 12.30pm. The day was bright and sunny, but there were thunderheads forming to the east. ‘I was looking North when I observed what looked like a ray of dark light coming down from a small cloud to the surface of the Gulf about a half-mile away,’ the 73-year-old man wrote in an email
Several skills that every kid once learned in school are going the way of the dodo in a hurry. Diagramming sentences is practically an extinct art, for example. Cursive handwriting and memorized multiplication tables look to be swiftly headed that way. Apparently, the next thing that kids will no longer need to learn is spelling and grammar. Sugata Mitra, a professor of educational technology at Newcastle University in northeast England, announced that traditional language rules are out of fashion, reports the Daily Mail. Kids don’t need to waste time on those things, see. State-of-the-art computers and mobile phones can make
Goose Creek resident Nancy Mace officially announced her campaign to defeat U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham in the 2014 Republican Party primary. The first woman to graduate from the Citadel, Mace is a well-regarded up-and-comer in Palmetto State politics, counting at least one notable South Carolina Tea Party fave as an ally, state Sen. Tom Davis (R-Beaufort). However, if Mace truly hopes to secure the SCGOP nomination, she will need to answer questions about another comrade, Will Folks of FITSNews. As the former co-owner of FITSNews, Mace presided over the South Carolina political gossip site during its most infamous days;
A dart game that used President Obama´s face for target practice at a county fair in New York state is being dismantled today. Fairgoer Abigail Czapsky submitted photos of the booth at Otsego County Fair to HuffPost yesterday, which show President Obama´s face lined up alongside yellow stars in a dart game. According to Czapsky´s Facebook page, following yesterday´s HuffPost story the booth has now taken down the offensive targets. Czapsky says the Otsego County Fair Board called her to apologize about the booth and explain that it was being taken down. Not one individual on the fair board
Some of the earliest clues scientists had that Earth´s climate has changed over time were mismatches between the fossil record and a current ecosystem. How could this palm tree have grown in Wyoming? Why have fossils of the tropical breadfruit tree been found as far north as Greenland? These cold places must have once been warm and wet. The world is not as it has always been. And somehow, despite the tumult, species adapted, moving thousands of miles to habitats where they could survive. Won´t species today just do the same as temperatures rise in the years ahead?
