Hatching Ideas, and Companies,
by the Dozens at M.I.T.

New York Times, by Hannah Seligson

How do you take particles in a test tube, or components in a tiny chip, and turn them into a $100 million company? Dr. Robert Langer, 64, knows how. Since the 1980s, his Langer Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has spun out companies whose products treat cancer, diabetes, heart disease and schizophrenia, among other diseases, and even thicken hair. The Langer Lab is on the front lines of turning discoveries made in the lab into a range of drugs and drug delivery systems. Without this kind of technology transfer, the thinking goes, scientific discoveries

Comments:
My reason for posting this is trying to read this made one think about the relationship between government or college program where licensed items are sold after created there. Where exactly do the profits go when, like this Dr. Robert Langer, who owns hundreds of patents because of his research at M.I.T.?

While working for a company, I was required to sign a waver to give all my ideas and creations back to said company. Nor, was I to share the trade secrets with next company. I don´t understand these shadow ventures at all.

Tehran - Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum urged the international community to lift economic sanctions against Iran. “Iran is our neighbor and we don’t want any problems,” Sheikh Mohammed, who is also vice president and prime minister of the UAE, said in a televised interview with BBC News. Sheikh Mohammed said that wider relief from sanctions would mean “everyone will benefit”. On November 24, Iran and the Group 5+1 (the US, Russia, China, Britain and France plus Germany) sealed a six-month Joint Plan of Action in Geneva to lay the groundwork for the full resolution of the West’s decade-old dispute with

Boston & Washington - Target Corp and Neiman Marcus are not the only U.S. retailers whose networks were breached over the holiday shopping season late last year, according to sources familiar with attacks on other merchants that have yet to be publicly disclosed. Smaller breaches on at least three other well-known U.S. retailers took place and were conducted using similar techniques as the one on Target, according to the people familiar with the attacks. Those breaches have yet to come to light. Also, similar breaches may have occurred earlier last year. The sources said that they involved retailers with outlets in malls,

At the request of the government of India, the United States will withdraw one official from its embassy in New Delhi over tensions involving a case surrounding an Indian diplomat. The decision comes as Devyani Khobragade, whose December arrest and strip search in New York strained ties between New Delhi and Washington, headed back to India. State Department spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki said she hopes this will help gain closure in the incident. U.S. prosecutors accuse Khobragade of lying in a visa application about how much she paid her housekeeper. She was indicted this week by a federal grand jury on

Cairo - The referendum on Egypt´s new draft constitution slated for Jan. 14-15 represents a major milestone in the country´s future roadmap, political experts said. The referendum marks the first time that Egyptians would go to the polls since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi by the military last July, after mass protests against his one-year rule and his Muslim Brotherhood group. (Snip) The new constitution is a prior step to pave the way for presidential and parliamentary elections in the country which is now run by an interim president and a transitional government. A Dallas conservation group´s auction of a rare license to hunt an endangered black rhino in Africa has outraged conservationists, leading to death threats against the auction´s organizer. The Dallas Safari Club plans to auction off the license Saturday night, hoping to raise as much as $1 million for conservation efforts. Criticism has come from groups including People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), which said the sale is a case of letting rich hunters buy a thrill at the cost of a rhino´s life. About 4,800 black rhinos are believed to be living worldwide, according to the World Wildlife Federation. The Namibian tourism ministry says about 1,750

Charleston, W.Va. - On the third day without clean tap water, business owners with empty dining rooms and quiet aisles of merchandise around West Virginia´s capital were left to wonder how much of an economic hit they´ll take from a chemical spill. Most visitors have cleared out of Charleston while locals are either staying home or driving out of the area to find somewhere they can get a hot meal or take a hot shower. Orders not to use tap water for much other than flushing toilets mean that the spill is an emergency not just for the environment but also for local businesses. Black dogs don´t get as adopted as easily as others animals of other colors. The reason is largely because of some common misconceptions about them. Black dogs are mischaracterized as mean and potentially violent and according to NBC News. Black Dog Syndrome is a phenomenon in which dogs with black fur often go unadopted because of misinformed stereotypes. Black dogs are are euthanized at a much higher rate than dogs with different complexions. Many owners of black dogs say they are sweet, lovable, but also unwanted. The chances of being adopted are poor if you´re a black dog.

Only days after we learned the Obama administration had appointed an Obama donor to head investigations into the IRS targeting of conservative organizations, we now have a leak from law enforcement saying the FBI doesn’t expect to file criminal charges. That’s the gist of a late-breaking story Monday evening in The Wall Street Journal. The story notes that though the investigation may go on another few months, unless other evidence is unearthed, the FBI conclusion will be that the IRS was a “mismanaged bureaucracy” enforcing rules “ it didn’t understand.” Without the evidence, we’re not in a position to say. But criminal

In 1994 or early 1995 the still unknown Barack Obama sent his editor at Times Books, Henry Ferris, the first two-thirds of his memoir Dreams from My Father. He told Ferris that to complete the book, he had to return to Kenya to do some research. The evidence strongly suggests that Obama went not to Kenya to do that research but to the local library to do some borderline plagiarizing. In the way of background, Barack and Michelle Obama visited Kenya in the summer of 1992 and married in October of that year. There is little dispute about the timing of

Washington - Just days after dismissing two top advisers for their roles in the George Washington Bridge scandal, New Jersey Gov. The news couldn´t come at a worse time for the scandal-plagued Republican, who is facing two probes into whether his staff tied up traffic near the country´s busiest bridge to punish a Democratic mayor who refused to endorse his successful re-election bid.

Before Chris Christie’s first scandal devolves into an obsessive quest to prove who knew what, when, it’s worth pausing to appreciate the wonderful, quintessential New Jerseyness of the incident itself. What happened, roughly, is this. On August 13, Bridget Anne Kelly, one of Christie’s three deputy chiefs of staff, sent an email to David Wildstein, a Christie confidant serving as an executive for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which controls much of the transit infrastructure of northern Jersey. Kelly said that it was “time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee.” Some speculate that the precipitating
