Death of Twinkies: A
Union Contract Hit

FOXBusiness, by Dennis Kneale

Original Article

In the death of Hostess Brands, progenitor of Twinkies, Devil Dogs and Ding Dongs and other artery-clogging, icing-adorned icons of Americana, plenty of factors get the blame.(snip) But the real reason Hostess had to die at this particular time? This was a union contract hit. And that offers a disturbing glimpse into the delusional, drunk-with-power mindset of unions -- which represent barely 7% of the private work force in the U.S. -- as they embark on a second term of way-too-cozy relations with their supplicant in the White House.

Comments:
My husband is now a former plant manager for a Hostess bread plant. He and I believe this to be the most thorough and accurate article written so far on the subject. This should answer the many questions and sometimes inaccurate observations posted on earlier articles.

"The union preferred to picket while an 85-year-old company suffocated . . . rather than risk having to face inevitable demands for similar concessions at other employers across the country." I believe this is exactly what the stupid refusal of concessions is about and it seems the bakers union was willing to sacrifice 5,000 Hostess workers to try and maintain their union-tough image. I wonder if any of those workers understand what just happened to them?

My condolences to OP on your husband´s job loss - my brother is also now jobless. It is a great article that should be read if you want to understand what happened to Hostess.

The Bakers Union was in the plants. The Teamsters Union drove the trucks. And, the Teamsters actually accepted the cuts and crossed the Bakers picket line.

It´s pretty bad when the Teamsters are the rational union in the negotiations!

There´s one ´Devil Dog´ remaining, and he´s in the White House. The ´Ding Dong´ serves as VP.

Hey Dennis: How many and how often must one eat one of these things before arteries clog up? One a week? One a month? 10 a day? I bet you don´t know. Congratulations on riding the bandwagon with other food police. I bet you feel really smart!

This is going to happen again and again as Obamanomics ripples across the nation. I think that this is actually the death knell of union power. Reality can´t be avoided forever. Union workers are going to lose more and more jobs as the union leadership becomes more and more irrational. Elections do have consequences.

Hostess, please, declare Chapter 11, invalidate ALL union contracts, re-incorporate in the Cayman Islands, then emerge from BK with transferred operations in non-union southern States and a limited market of Red States only.

Would the union workers have been so suicidal if they had not suffered a delusional bravery due to Obama´s monumental welfare system?

The constitutional republic known as the U.S.A is dead; most just don´t realize it yet.

#6, they ARE in Ch. 11. That was the predicative factor in the Company´s re-negotiation with the Teamsters et al.
It was the rejection of the Plan in Ch. 11 by the Bakers union that will dictate that the company go Ch. 7.

I´ve said this before and will again - Twinkies, Ding Dongs and Wonder Bread aren´t dead. There´s money to be made selling junk food. Hostess products generated over $2 billion in revenue every year. It was the union work rules that killed Hostess. Non-union companies will buy the pieces of Hostess and will be producing their most popular products in a matter of months. They´ll make a profit because they´ll make sure they keep the unions out.

Unfortunately, most of the Hostess employees will not be hired back because they wear the union stink. Let´s hope OP´s husband is one of the lucky ones.

I read that Hostess had 6 business plans that failed to profit in the last 10 years but the upper management paid itself outrageous salaries. if this true, its not the Unions fault. (and I HATE unions!)

Unless republicans find one politician hip enough and brave enough and with enough scriptural awareness to explain clearly that Obama and the Left are just about done overthrowing the country, and the middle east, we are finished. BTW, there is no "republican" like that.

An amazing article. The bottom line fta:
"Even a parasite is smart enough to know not to kill its host. In the case of unions, the presence of such preternatural intelligence isn’t yet readily apparent."

#13, loved you in Everybody loves Raymond.

Sadly, your statement must have come from a liberal. See, Hostess has been in Bankruptcy twice in the last 10 years and any executive compensation must be approved by the Court.
The current management? ONE dollar a year.
Unions SUCK.

All 17 Democrats on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee have called on Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) to end the “partisan” investigation into the Benghazi attack “and begin focusing instead on conducting responsible oversight to implement constructive reforms.” The Dems, led by ranking member Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), charged that the probe “has been characterized by wild and unsubstantiated political accusations that turn out to be completely inaccurate.” They proceeded to outline those instances in the five-page letter. “Continuing this reckless pattern of launching wholly unfounded accusations on national television — and racking up more and more Pinocchios in the process —

As part of its plan to reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, the Obama administration is targeting the dairy industry to reduce methane emissions in their operations. This comes despite falling methane emission levels across the economy since 1990. The White House has proposed cutting methane emissions from the dairy industry by 25 percent by 2020. Although U.S. agriculture only accounts for about 9 percent of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, it makes up a sizeable portion of methane emissions — which is a very potent greenhouse gas. Some of these methane emissions come from

After a disastrous presidential campaign in 2012, can Texas Governor Rick Perry mount a credible bid for the White House in 2016? Texas Governor Rick Perry is currently on a media tour touting the theme that America is a great place for second chances, specifically second chances for Texas governors with national ambitions. Perry is trying to erase the memory of his disastrous 2012 GOP presidential campaign which included “brain-farts” and “oops” debate moments with his folksy, charming, and uniquely American manner. Curious about Perry’s comeback strategy, I asked Texan and GOP presidential media guru, Mark McKinnon and he said,

Las Vegas - Many of the Republican Party’s most powerful insiders and financiers have begun a behind-the-scenes campaign to draft former Florida governor Jeb Bush into the 2016 presidential race, courting him and his intimates and starting talks on fundraising strategy. Concerned that the George Washington Bridge traffic scandal has damaged New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s political standing and alarmed by the steady rise of Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.), prominent donors, conservative leaders and longtime operatives say they consider Bush the GOP’s brightest hope to win back the White House.

The past couple of weeks have marked a turning point in American ugliness as the mob has turned its full fury on first lady Michelle Obama. From criticism of her trip to China to a recent “tell-all” by former White House assistant press secretary Reid Cherlin in the New Republic about Obama’s allegedly tyrannical behavior, the gloves have been removed. As described, she was a perfectionist — super-attentive to detail and laser-focused on advance planning. And this is bad because? Worse, according to a former (anonymous) staffer, there was no barometer for meeting Obama’s high standards. “The first lady having

A startling rift appeared Tuesday on the Supreme Court as the three female Justices came out swinging like Brunnhildes — women warriors — for what they erroneously labeled an “entitlement” to employer-provided contraceptives and morning-after pills. The Justices were hearing oral arguments in Sebelius v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc., a case hyped by the Democratic Party as a test for women’s rights. Justices Kagan, Ginsberg, and Sotomayor sprang on Hobby Lobby’s attorney , interrupting his every sentence and pummeling him with questions taken right out of the Democratic Party’s “war on women” playbook. That playbook was laid out in a

Right now, a crime wave is sweeping the nation, and everyone in this out-of-control mob has a D after their names, even if most of the media are loath to report it. If you are a low-information voter, a Globe subscriber, say, you have been told endlessly that the root of all evil in American politics is the Tea Party, better known in your moonbat media as “teabaggers.” Oddly, however, the hacks rounded up over the last few days, well,

Only "mere scraps of data documented" Barack Obama´s mother´s "days in Seattle," writes Obama biographer David Maraniss in his 2012 Barack Obama: The Story. Incidentally, Maraniss was telling the truth: Ann´s "days in Seattle" weren´t mentioned in Dreams from my Father and were only vaguely implied in Maraniss´s lengthy 2008 article. And it appears that the only "scraps" of evidence of Obama´s mother´s time in Seattle during 1961-1962 was a listing in a Seattle Polk directory and a University of Washington (UW) transcript. And it appears that the only "mere scraps" of evidence of baby Barack´s time in Seattle are
