Is Paula Broadwell’s wardrobe fair game?

| If you’ve been following the David Petraeus-Paula Broadwell story, you may have seen this shirt: black and silky and flouncy and very, very arm-baring. Also shoulder-baring. Not what your mother would advise you to wear on national television. Not what my mother would advise, anyway. Even if the national television is “The Daily Show” and you have a push-up contest planned with Jon Stewart. Why am I bringing this up, again? I referred to the halter top in a recent column about Petraeus, noting, “Beware the woman who goes on ‘The Daily Show’ wearing a black silk halter top and flaunting her

It´s fair game only if you have nothing of substance to talk about. If you know what´s going on, you won´t care to talk about such trivial things. Ruth obviously doesn´t care to inform readers, just obfuscate the truth.

Professional women should adapt a day-to-day wardrobe of conservative suits and dresses, in conservative trim and colors, suitable for the various settings in which they they work. I have noticed our local women district attorneys and their assistants doing this, just as their male counterparts have.
There is no need to try to imitate a network anchorwomen in wardrobe. Their MALE counterparts don´t.

A major "yes!" to the whole essay.
My first comment about Broadwell (after watching her in videos doing various performances - Morning Joe, the Daily Show, etc.) was she´s "obvious".
When a West Point graduate and former military officer (still one in the reserves) dresses that way, it sends major signals. Especially to men. Even more so to men of a certain age who have prostate problems (Petraeus), consider themselves to be waning in their own sex appeal, and suddenly have this smarty pants hotty who seems to think they are the cat´s pjs.
Skip the Kelley sisters. They have always dressed that way and are probably a barrel of fun. Otherwise the officers wives wouldn´t enjoy them, too.
But Broadwell sends signals that are unmistakeable to a savvy woman. One like Ruth Marcus. And me.

I have known plenty of beautiful women who do not dress in the "come hither" manner. Women who complain of sexism are clueless if they think revealing clothes do not turn men on; they may have never have been conceived if their mothers covered up like burqa tent peephole eyed Islamistes. Get off your high sounding shock stupid ladies. And for Petraeus, he should have known it would crash his career. Such situations have ruined more men than can be counted in history.

In a way, women bring this clothing criticism on themselves with their selling. Women are sellers by nature. A seller elaborates the shop window, so to speak.
The problem is that liberalism exaggerated things for women by encouraging them to sell even more than what is normal and natural. Now, it´s constant selling. Sell, sell, sell. Everything has to be flattering or revealing so as to obtain the approval of the buyer.
As for Paula Broadwell, her wardrobe is the last thing I noticed about her. I couldn´t get beyond those staring eyes.

Broadwell´s wardrobe is symptomatic of the coursening culture on and around military bases today. The Army used to have and enforce dress codes for civilians (particularly women) on post. Where the dress codes still exist, they certainly aren´t enforced.
When my son-in-law and daughter were preparing for their first Army formal event in 2009, they were both given lengthy instruction regarding the acceptable wardrobe choices for the ball. My daughter was annoyed at the waste of time but she figured out why it was necessary on the night of the ball. Many of the soldiers´s wives/girlfriends looked like off-duty topless dancers and on-duty hookers.

Over the weekend, the Saddleback Valley Community Church announced the sad news that Pastor Rick Warren‘s youngest son, Matthew, committed suicide at the age of 27, after a long struggle with mental illness. On Monday, Megyn Kelly‘s panel took on some of the “despicable” reaction that followed — questioning why the pastor isn’t afforded basic compassion by some of his critics. Noting the “shocking” and “disgusting” vitriol directed at the pastor following the news, Kelly declined to “give a voice to the haters.” Father Jonathan Morris, a Fox News contributor, agreed, deeming the attacks “ridiculous,” “tasteless,” and simply “very sad.”

Bernard Anderson, a pathbreaking African-American economist, understands the importance of rhetoric. He was up front at the Lincoln Memorial when Martin Luther King Jr. gave his historic “I Have a Dream” speech in 1963. And he was in the audience on the Howard University campus in 1965 to hear President Johnson deliver a grim view of the state of black America and declare war on “past injustice and present prejudice.” So Anderson had high hopes as he sat at home in Pennsylvania watching President Obama deliver his second Inaugural Address this year.

President Obama’s legacy may be in the uncertain grip of a conservative senator from Pennsylvania, a former president of the tax-cutting Club for Growth who received high marks from the National Rifle Association. On guns and deficit reduction, two cornerstones of the Obama agenda, Sen. Pat Toomey may hold the key to compromise. Budget: House Republicans privately concede they are willing to raise revenue beyond the $600 billion tax hike approved last year, if Democrats agree to trim Social Security and Medicare benefits. The case of a same-sex Connecticut couple accused of repeatedly raping and abusing two of their nine adopted boys is headed for trial. Married couple George Harasz and Douglas Wirth of Glastonbury were supposed to be sentenced Friday in Hartford Superior Court under a plea deal, but instead withdrew from their agreement with prosecutors. The men had already pleaded no contest in January to one felony count each of risk of injury to a minor — a reduction from even more serious charges related to sexual assault....

WASHINGTON — President Obama next week will take the political risk of formally proposing cuts to Social Security and Medicare in his annual budget in an effort to demonstrate his willingness to compromise with Republicans and revive prospects for a long-term deficit-reduction deal, administration officials say. In a significant shift in fiscal strategy, Mr. Obama on Wednesday will send a budget plan to Capitol Hill that departs from the usual presidential wish list that Republicans typically declare dead on arrival.

Washington is edging closer to a budget deal, thanks to a gutsy change in strategy at the White House. Next week, President Obama will propose specific cuts to Social Security and Medicare in his annual budget, according to senior White House officials. That will put the onus on House Speaker John Boehner to show some leadership, too. He needs to push Republicans toward accepting tax increases beyond the $600 billion approved in December. It can be done. As I reported last month, Washington’s biggest myth is that a budget deal is out of reach

WASHINGTON — The North Korean army warned the United States on Wednesday it has been cleared to wage nuclear war using “smaller, lighter and diversified weapons.” In a speech earlier in the day, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel noted that North Korea has both the nuclear weapons and the delivery system “now.” It’s the latest round in an escalation of rhetoric and actions that began with a North Korean nuclear test in February. Still, military officials and experts don’t expect North Korea to launch an attack on the United States.

Two breaking news alerts came through the wire this afternoon: First, the AP sent word that Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel has called North Korea´s latest rhetoric a real, clear danger and threat to the U.S. and its allies. Within minutes, CNBC announced that the Pentagon has sent a new missile defense to Guam. The reports that followed those alerts added some meat to the storty -- "Hagel´s comments come as tensions continue to rise between North and South Korea," etc. -- but they are notably lacking in context. How serious is the threat, really? Are the North and South on the verge of war, or is this yet another bluff?

In a bizarre new twist to the saga of Sen. Bob Menendez and his donor-friend Salomon Melgen, members of Melgen’s circle are now hurling accusations at FBI agents investigating the pair’s relationship. During an appearance on the weekly Dominican TV show La Respuesta last week, Melgen’s uncle Vincho Castillo accused the FBI of threatening and kidnapping two of Melgen’s maids. In addition to being the Dominican Republic’s top drug cop and founder of a far right-wing political party, Vincho Castillo is also the father of Vinicito Castillo, a lawyer who allegedly participated in sex parties organized by Melgen.

My nephew’s high school government class is studying propaganda, a word most students associated with Hitler, Goebbels, and the like. “I deal with propagandists every day,” I told the class in the Detroit area last week. “They work in the White House and in Congress--Republicans and Democrats alike.” The kids were a bit surprised. “Are you calling them Nazis?” one asked. Of course not, I replied, but politicians today are using new communications tools to spread their version of the truth, much of it misleading. A smart piece by Nancy Benac of the Associated Press describes how the Obama White House “image machine” works--“serving up a stream of words, images, and videos that invariably cast the president as commanding, compassionate, and on the ball.

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”

There was growing buzz over the weekend that a bipartisan agreement on gun control — a deal that would expand background checks — could hit the floor as early as this week. However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.
