Pictured: How Cambodia´s first lady mocked President Obama with a handshake greeting typically reserved for servants

| The president´s ´historic´ first tour of Southeast Asia ended with an unusual diplomatic snub at the hands of Cambodia´s first lady Bun Rany. Obama became the first ever U.S. president to visit Cambodia earlier this week, when he ended his four-day visit to the region by attending the annual East Asia Summit it was hosting. Unlike the president´s constructive visit to Myanmar, where he met with opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi and praised the country´s progress, Obama had made it clear he was only in Cambodia to attend the summit.
|
Comments: The header writer erred in using the word "handshake." Apparently should have been "pressed-hands" greeting. Doesn´t change the fact that it was an insult, though.

So, if I want to stick it to "the won," just press my hands together and give him a "sampeah." After all, he is a servant of his people. [Ha-ha...]
Guess he won´t be going back to Cambodia. Nothing to apologize there. [Didn´t Kerry secretly "serve" there?]

After giving Obama the pressed-hands greeting usually reserved for servants, she told him to hurry up and get the tray of drinks for the other guests.

How arrogant our State Department is, back in the day our traveling dignitaries would be briefed on customs and cultures of the places they would be traveling to. What do these people do now to justify their salaries and the air they breathe?

This is a subtle variation of the Sampeah. As it is explained elsewhere, the hands closeness to the face and the deeper the bow, the more respect is shown. It is similar to the Thai Wai. In the picture, Bun Rany´s hands are at chest level and the bow is almost non-existent. As someone else so eloquently put it, like they were greeting a servant. Just the barest of effort put into it.
I am very fortunate to have made friends in the Thai community. They give a Wai with hands right on their forehead and bows that are very low even to me, so the disrespect shown here is very obvious. Like they were all laughing at this "Kuhn" Obama, as it is spoken in Thai. (That is spelled a little differently in the United States.)

He does that stupid hands pressed thing whenever he greets anyone from a culture he believes uses it. So now we know how it is perceived in some cultures. Best to stick with your own - whatever that is. At home with wifey it is high fives and fist bumps.
The money line in this article (literally) is this one:
Hun Sen also reiterated a request to forgive most of the country´s debt of more than $370 million to the United States.
Last year, Cambodia offered to repay 30 per cent of the debt, which they said was a compromise as the money was used by a pro-American government in the 1970s to repress its own people.

It was her body "tilt" as she did the hand move (her "tilt" was very slight) that another photo caption mentioned as being for a servant.
Apparently the sampeah hand press is the same, but the more respect one intends to show, the deeper the "tilt" or bow. Obie didn´t warrant much from her.

The shirt that the President is wearing looks like a pyjama. I wonder if it´s endemic to the region or if he brought it from the White House. I also noticed that he looks at Asian female officials in a slightly lurid way. It´s as if he´s holding something out there that needs expressing.

#21 the shirts they´re wearing look similar to the ones worn by people in/from the Philippines on formal occasions. I think a shirt like that is called a "barong". It´s worn outside one´s regular clothes, like a suit coat (but much more lightweight and often features some fancy stitching).
Isn´t the way Obama eyed the Thai PM and leaned in toward the Cambodian first lady (see pic 3 in the story) considered a rudely forward gesture in their culture? Can´t blame all the leaders there for having some disrespect for Bonehead Barry if that is, indeed, the case.

Potus and his gal haven´t got the hint that in certain cultures that it frowned on to phsically touch people no matter what the occasion happens to be. They better get Etiquetted by that special dept in State Department. For example, in Japan, even at a high level meeting, gathered around a table, it is considered "insulting" for one to stand up for one to make their points or comments to the group. You may not be invited back again. IMHO opinion, BHO will not be invited back.

I find the body language of the Sultan of Brunei - the richest man in the world - very interesting indeed. And very revealing.
In photo #2, the first with these two, Barcky is leaning way over him, towering almost, and the Sultan is turned slightly as if to fleck off the pest on his shoulder.
In the next photo of these two, the 4th, the Sultan is turned to gawk at the fool cackling beside him, while the other men look solemn and respectful and serious to be at their summit conference.
And do I notice the baby powder back in Barcky´s hair?
Also, I have to comment on the sempeah issue: It is quite possible that Barcky greeted HER that way first, and she is merely reciprocating.
And the final photo, before the video, only Barcky is waving at the camera, again, like the narcissistic fool he is.
Gawd, four more YEARS OF THIS....!!!

I read that the hands are supposed to be exactly together as well. Her hands are not aligned properly. To Westerners, this might not seem like that big of a deal, but the instructional video I watched made much of doing this traditional greeting absolutely right, according to cultural traditions.

For the umpteenth time , Barry is the only one waving and gawking at the camera in group photos of world leaders. He looks like a Moron-American. This guy stumbled his way all over SE Asia making gaffes like Biden and it was ignored by the gerbils. The same ones that went berserk because Romney described the potential security problems at the Olympics as " disconcerting ". Soetero´s features and skin tone make him look like he could be part Asian. Wouldn´t it be a hoot if it turned out that he was actually half Asian , instead of part black ?? Maybe Lolo Soetero was his real father ? Another article described the Cambodia First Lady as greeting Soetero like he was " a towel boy ".

#4... not exactly. Our foriegn office briefings were not any better back in the Nixon years either.
On his ´historic´ visit to chicom in 72, he was outrageously insulted on the tarmac when Mao sent an underling to great him at the air field. During the pitifully meager welcoming ceremony the messenger, in a bare-minimum acknowledgement of any visitor, gulped his rice wine before Nixon could get the cup to his lips. (He is supposed to wait for his guest to sip first in a proper "gambei.") This is extrememly bad form and should have led to an international incident. But alas, Nixon blundered through the facade totally naive to the message and America´s international standing was once again made to suffer through unaccountable ignorance.
Most of America didn´t realize what happened that day on the runway either. I happen to know because I was a Chinese language linguist for the Navy in the far east until 1969.
The last point here is no one in that area of the world likes a foriegn fool to come into their country and flirt with female heads of state. A Buffoon.

Obama and the media think he is a man of the world. In fact, he is stupid about the world. He isn´t from anywhere really. Born who knows where, and raised in three different countries when he was an adolescent. Mentored by relatives and family friends who were communists, atheists and Marxists. So he knows a little bit about a few things and, may I say it again, he is actually STUPID. He is a con artist of limited ability, and only has succeeded to be president twice because the media supports him and does not report his stupidity and gaffes to the American people.

She could have said to him in Cambodian that his breath smelled of liquor, his old lady looks like a mountain gorilla and he that lies on his golf score card, and he would have said thank you very much!

Google says it has detected and stopped thousands of phishing attacks targeting email accounts of Iranian users ahead of the 14 June presidential election. In an online statement, the firm said it had noticed a "significant jump" in the region´s overall volume of phishing activity in the last three weeks. The timing and targets suggested the attacks were "politically motivated". Friday´s poll is the first since 2009 when President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won a controversial second term. The election had triggered angry protests, with voters accusing Mr Ahmadinejad´s camp of rigging the results in his favour.

At least 93,000 people have been killed in Syria since the start of the conflict, according to latest United Nations figures. This represents a rise of more than 30,000 since the UN last issued figures covering the period to November 2012. At least 5,000 people have been dying in Syria every month since last July, the UN´s human rights body says. But it says these statistics are an underestimate as it believes many deaths have not been reported. Over 80% of those killed were men, but the UN´s Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights

Just back from the State Department where the US-UK diplomacy on Syria has reached Monty Python levels of double-speak. William Hague was agitated and impotent as usual. Reflecting long-standing British impatience with the US sitting on its hands over the Syrian conflict, he lambasted Assad in the usual manner: “murder” “tyranny” “grave threat” “urgent crisis”. You get the picture. Mr Kerry spoke with even more emptiness than Mr Hague, before letting slip this pearl: “We are determined to do everything that we can in order to help the opposition to save Syria,” he said. Really? “Everything that we can?” Ho-ho.

Now that the dust has settled after the Edward Snowden affair, it’s time to ask some tough questions about The Guardian’s scoop of the week. [Snip] But bits of the story are now being questioned. 1. Why did he go to China? It was always an odd aspect of his plan that he should choose as his refuge from tyranny a totalitarian state that happily spies on its own people and imprisons dissenters. True, Hong Kong itself has a tradition of resistance to dictatorship, but it also has a treaty with the US that would make it relatively easy

Too soon? As outrage continues to build over the National Security Administration´s controversial Prism program, in which the federal government collects the electronic communications (email, text messages, phone calls, etc.) of average citizens, the nation´s highest intelligence official is yucking it up about what many consider to be an unconstitutional violation of the U.S. citizenry´s right to privacy. Foot-in-mouth-prone Director of National Intelligence James Clapper spoke at a black-tie dinner honoring former CIA and National Security Agency chief Michael Hayden on Friday night and--just days after admitting that he´d provided false testimony to Congress in regard to the Prism

On Tuesday Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) cited "Biblical compassion" as a reason to support the "Gang of Eight" immigration bill. Rubio told CBN that he supports the bill because “[o]ur faith has always been about compassion and it compels you to do something. "Now, we have an obligation to be responsible to our country and not do anything that hurts America but also our faith calls us to compassion. If you took compassion or the principle of compassion out of the Bible, it would be in tatters because it’s all over the place.” Mark Tooley, President of the Institute

Director of National Intelligence James Clapper is really struggling to explain why he told Congress in March (see video above) that the National Security Agency does not intentionally collect any kind of data on millions of Americans. His latest take: It´s an unfair question, he said, like "When are you going to stop beating your wife?" And it seems to depend on the meaning of "collect." "I responded in what I thought was the most truthful, or least untruthful, manner by saying ´no,´" Clapper told NBC News on Sunday.

President Barack Obama said Tuesday that America “owes” it to certain illegal aliens to pass legislation providing a “pathway to citizenship.” “We owe it to America to do better,” Obama said in the East Room of the White House. “We owe it to the Dreamers to do better.” Obama then went on to cite several young people in the audience. Obama and supporters of the immigration reform legislation have called people who were taken into the United States illegally by their parents “dreamers.” Democrats previously supported the DREAM Act that would allow illegals who attend college or

The Obama administration is considering resettling thousands of refugees who left Syria during the country´s ongoing civil war to multiple towns and cities across the United States, the L.A. Times reports. A resettlement plan under discussion in Washington and other capitals is aimed at relieving pressure on Middle Eastern countries straining to support 1.6 million refugees, as well as assisting hard-hit Syrian families. (Snip) U.N. refugee officials, along with diplomats and non-governmental relief groups, are scheduled to meet in Geneva this week to discuss potential resettlement plans. Germany has already agreed to take 5,000 refugees.

Senator Barbara Boxer celebrated the rekindling of talks about gun-control legislation after a shooting at Santa Monica College last Friday. “Every single time something like this happens, I think this does give us wind at our back,” Boxer said on MSNBC over the weekend. On Friday, a gunman opened fire on the school’s campus in the state of California, killing six people, including the gunman. She said she does “worry about” the failure of the legislation after the Sandy Hook shooting last year, but knows that gun-control supporters “never give up.”

In a Gallup tracking poll released Tuesday, former-President George W. Bush currently stands with a favorability rating of 49%, compared to 46% who see the 43rd president unfavorably. Meanwhile, another Gallup poll shows President Obama with only a 47% approval rating, with 44% disapproving. If you think about it, this makes perfect sense. After all, Obama fooled everyone when he ran as the anti-Bush in 2008. Everyone thought Obama meant he would be less hawkish than his predecessor. But as we have seen, Obama apparently has no problem killing American citizens

The Obama administration was facing renewed pressure over the secrecy of its surveillance programs, as a group of US senators demanded it reveal how it interprets the laws that underpin them and foreign governments expressed growing concern. A bill, to be introduced in the Senate on Tuesday, would force the US government to disclose the opinions of a secretive surveillance court that determines the scope of the eavesdropping on Americans´ phone records and internet communications. Separately, a leading member of the Senate intelligence committee came close to saying that James Clapper,

Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) said Wednesday that the incidence of pregnancy caused by rape is "very low," prompting criticism from Democrats who said the GOP is waging a "war on women." Franks made the comment during a committee mark-up of his late-term abortion ban bill, which is expected pass the House next week. The Republican lawmaker was arguing against a Democratic amendment allowing rape and incest victims to procure abortions. As written, the bill only exempts women whose lives are in danger. "You know, the incidence of rape resulting in pregnancy are very low," Franks said.

Like a lot of people, I felt reassured earlier this year when President Obama spoke of the need to combat climate change for the sake of our children. The president demonstrated leadership that night in that State of the Union address by making it clear that he doesn´t see extreme heat waves, powerful storms like Hurricane Sandy, the most severe drought in decades and the worst wildfires ever in some states as just weird coincidences. He demonstrated leadership by calling out Congress, saying if it doesn´t act soon, he will take executive

WASHINGTON — The State Department has hired an alarming number of law-enforcement agents with criminal or checkered backgrounds because of a flawed hiring process, a stunning memo obtained by The Post reveals. The background problems are severe enough that many of the roughly 2,000 agents in State’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security can play only limited roles in agency efforts to police bad conduct and prosecute wrongdoers. The problems in the bureau are the latest revelation in an exploding scandal that also involves accusations that members of former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton’s security detail
