Black Friday Craziness Isn´t Adding Up

| In days gone by, Black Friday – the name given to the day after Thanksgiving – was the start of the holiday shopping season and was the day of the year that saw the greatest dollar volume of retail sales. The term “black” comes from the accounting world and recognizes that sales were not “in the red” but were “in the black.” Over the years, to boost sales on Black Friday, retailers began to open earlier. Instead of the traditional 9am or 10am opening hour, stores would open at 8am, then 6am, then midnight.
|
Comments: The craziness is not increasing sales - only concentrating them on the one day.

I tried it once years ago. My neighbor was going to a popular electronics store that was opening at 5AM. I went along to get a large lcd tv and be home by 6 for breakfast. I thought there´d be maybe one hundred people waiting to get in. There were at least 3,000. Never again. It´s Amazon for me. No 9.3% sales tax.

I question that Black Friday refers to accounting for sales. The earliest precise use I found referred to a panic in the gold market on Sept 24, 1864.
Sales are revenue by definition - on any day - and therefore recorded in the ordinary ink, black.

Crazy people pushing and shoving for a few bargains, it has become a holiday tradition and news for a slow news day. I don´t think many people who want to spend quality time with their families do it, but it does provide an escape for people who have had too much family time by Friday.

How long are we going to keep explaining, apologizing, backing away, banning words, and getting down on our knees to appease unreasonablenss, lack of education, stupidity and intolerance?

Walk into any large chain department store tomorrow and "black friday" will take on a whole new meaning. I don´t need anything badly enough to go through that kind of madness.
No matter how much hype they try to generate this year, sales are going to be a disappointment because working people are worried about the near future, like the beginning of 2013.

Be aware of the stores that are scanning and storing your state driver´s license or state ID in order to give you return privileges this holiday season. Retail Equation, I think the company is called, is storing the data and using it to determine if you are "serial returner" and then denying the return if you fit their parameters, which remain undefined and apparently undisclosed.
Target and Macy´s are two who are using them now, as is Home Depot.
The big thing to remember: the data stored on the magnetic strip of your license is sensitive, and rather voluminous. They are storing it, with no protections being publicized. We don´t know if they´re really encrypting it, what is actually read from it, where it goes, who else it is sold to or is granted access to it.
Never let anyone scan and store data from the magnetic strip - which does include your SSN, though it is not visible on the license itself in most states. The only ones who should have access to that and for cause, is law enforcement and the BMV/DMV of your state.

SAN FRANCISCO — California lawmakers are considering taking some tax exemptions away from youth groups that do not accept gay, transgender or atheist members — a move intended to pressure the Boy Scouts of America to lift its ban on gay Scouts and troop leaders. Some cities have withdrawn free rent and other subsidies from the Boy Scouts over the years, but legislation introduced by state Sen. Ricardo Lara would make California the first state to target the Scouts for its anti-gay policy. The Long Beach Democrat´s bill, SB 323, is scheduled for its first committee hearing on Wednesday.

A retired man has fallen victim to a pet poodle hoax after his local veterinarian uncovered he had been sold two giant rodents pumped up with steroids. Bargain hunters rummaging around Argentina’s largest flea market, La Salada, have been duped into spending hundreds of dollars on what they have been told is the dog of their dreams. In reality, they’ve just been sold what locals call the ‘Brazilian rat’ – a ferret pumped up on steroids and groomed to resemble a fluffy toy poodle. The retired man was initially fooled by the $75 price tag for a pet

KABUL, Afghanistan -- A NATO airstrike in eastern Afghanistan killed 11 civilians, 10 of them children, in addition to the Taliban militants it was trying to hit, Afghan officials said. The strike late Saturday in the Shigal district of restive Kunar province near Pakistan was called by coalition forces after they and their Afghan counterparts came under an attack that killed one American advisor and badly wounded four Afghan troops. The American death was reported on Saturday, but details of the alleged civilian casualties only surfaced Sunday. Wasifullah Wasifi, spokesperson for the governor of Kunar province, said the strike

The biggest political problem faced by so-called “liberals” and so-called “progressives” in President Obama’s second term is how to prevent voters from holding them politically responsible as the public comes to realize how badly they were lied to during the first Obama term to win passage of Obamacare. (Snip) Just wait until the broad realization dawns that the harsh reality of Obamacare is that tens of millions will lose their employer provided insurance because of the perverse incentives under the program. Gluten-free diets are all the rage, but they can be dangerous if not done right. What is gluten? It´s the spongy complex of proteins, found naturally in wheat, rye, and barley, that gives elasticity to dough and allows it to rise. When flour is moistened and either kneaded or mixed into dough, gluten molecules form an elastic, microscopic latticework that traps the carbon dioxide produced when yeast ferments, causing dough to inflate like a hot air balloon. Baking hardens the gluten, which helps the finished product keep its shape. Wheat — and gluten — is ubiquitous in the American diet.

The US defence department has delayed an intercontinental ballistic missile test that had been planned for next week at an air force base in California amid mounting tensions with North Korea, according to a senior official. Defence secretary Chuck Hagel reportedly decided to put off the long-planned Minuteman 3 test until next month because of concerns the launch could be misinterpreted and exacerbate the Korean crisis. "This is the logical, prudent and responsible course of action to take," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. The test was not connected to the ongoing annual

The bodies were discovered Friday outside Holbrook, a town of about 400 people just north of the Idaho-Utah state line. Authorities said a 2-month-old was found under the arm of one of the victims — 27-year-old Yavette Chivon Carter.

LOS ANGELES — The role of female talk show hosts in late-night TV network history, all 50-plus years of it, can be summed up in two words: Joan Rivers. It takes just another two — Arsenio Hall — to do the same for minorities. There´s no indication that´s going to change in the latest round of musical chairs involving "Tonight" and "Late Night." NEW YORK -- In case Americans want to scarf down their fast-food even faster, KFC is stripping the bones out of its chicken. The fast-food chain says it´s introducing deep-fried boneless chicken pieces on April 14 as an alternative to its traditional breast, thigh and drumstick pieces. The new offering reflects the growing popularity of nuggets and strips that are easier to eat on the go, as well as Americans´ seemingly endless desire for more convenient foods. KFC says nearly four out of five servings of chicken sold in the U.S. are now boneless. Based on customer trends

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

There was growing buzz over the weekend that a bipartisan agreement on gun control — a deal that would expand background checks — could hit the floor as early as this week. However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.

Congress and the American people need to know what happened the night of Sept. 11, 2012. Who did the killing and what was their motive? Why wasn´t help sent? And why did the administration lie about who was responsible? Margaret Thatcher had more impact on the world than any woman ruler since Catherine the Great of Russia. Not only did she turn around—decisively—the British economy in the 1980s, she also saw her methods copied in more than 50 countries. "Thatcherism" was the most popular and successful way of running a country in the last quarter of the 20th century and into the 21st. Her origins were humble. Born Oct. 13, 1925, she was the daughter of a grocer in the Lincolnshire town of Grantham. Alfred Roberts was no ordinary shopkeeper.
