Hello and Happy Thanksgiving. I´m Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers from Washington State. Though the Thanksgiving story began long before our founding, the holiday itself started in 1863, when President Lincoln gave thanks for ´the gracious gifts of the Most High God,´ first among them being freedom. He invited Americans to mark a day of Thanksgiving so that these gifts could be ´solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged with one heart and one voice by the whole American People.´
Hello, I’m Indiana Governor Mike Pence. These are difficult days for too many Americans. Our economy isn’t growing as fast as we would like, and businesses aren’t creating as many jobs as we need. In states like Indiana, we’re working every day to give people more freedom to grow their businesses, but the over-regulation, higher taxes and new mandates coming from Washington, D.C. are stifling our economy and hurting efforts being made in states across the country.
Hi, everybody. Over the past month, I’ve been visiting towns across America, talking about what our country needs to do to secure a better bargain for the middle class. This week, I met with high school and college students in New York and Pennsylvania to discuss the surest path to the middle class — some form of higher education. But at a moment when a higher education has never been more important, it’s also never been more expensive.
Those who watched, even fans in other cities, are unlikely to ever forget its historic perfection. And now XLI years later it seems unlikely ever to happen again. The 1972 Miami Dolphins´ perfect 17-0 NFL season--three preseason victories followed by 14 straight regular and post-season wins, topped by an 18th consecutive win to start the next season. The Dolphins didn´t crush everyone that year. But in only their third year in the NFL, the Dolphins always had just enough juice left to pull out a W. [Snip] But Richard Nixon had problems that year. So, the only Super Bowl champions
According to President Obama, implementation of ObamaCare, his signature chunk of legislation, is rolling out exactly as he envisioned. If so, he needs eyeglasses to go along with his Nicorette. With questionable legal authority, the Obama administration has already had to postpone two major aspects of the complex legislation, despite three full years of preparation time. Also, we now know healthcare insurance premiums have already jumped. Big business, Congress and White House folks got special delays and waivers. But us regular people still must follow every letter. And now we´re learning of an immense barrel of worms in the enrollment
Hi, I´m Shelley Moore Capito, and I represent West Virginia’s Second Congressional District. Last month, members of both parties came together in the House to pass legislation delaying the individual mandate in the president’s health care law. Because you and your family deserve the same relief the president gave to big businesses by delaying the employer mandate — it’s only fair. Actually, it’s more than fair when you look at how this law is already raising costs, hurting jobs and reducing access to the plans and the doctors you like.
Hi, everybody. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been visiting with Americans across the country to talk about what we need to do to secure a better bargain for the middle class. We need to rebuild an economy that rewards hard work and responsibility; an economy built firmly on the cornerstones of middle-class life. Good jobs. A good education. A home of your own. A secure retirement. And quality, affordable health care that’s there when you need it. Right now, we’re well on our way to fully implementing the Affordable Care Act.
Major powers like the United States have many ways to attempt to influence the actions of other countries -- money, of course, humanitarian and military aid, personal and official contacts, sanctions, the media. None guarantee success. But one thing guarantees failure: Hedging, Waffling, Whatever you want to call a foggy policy. And that is exactly what President Obama and his team have followed regarding Egypt and beyond. And now -- and for perhaps years to come -- the United States is paying the price for his Amateur Hour. It´s yet another facet of the Obama Doctrine of Failure in the
It must be August in these United States. How else to explain all the ridiculous high dudgeon over the rodeo clown at the Missouri State Fair wearing an Obama mask? OMG, someone mocking the arrogant Oval Office guy, as late-night comedians do most weekdays now. (Leno: Obama out on his ´Middle Class Jobs & Opportunity Tour.´ Don’t confuse that with his first term ´Jobs & Missed Opportunities Tour.´) C’mon, America. This is the country that began with a Revolution, thumbing its nose at a monarch for George’s sake. It’s humorous here when someone makes fun of authority figures. Every president
Big headlines last Friday, as President Obama planned, for his news conference announcement. He was naming "a high-level group of outside experts" to probe the nation´s entire intelligence apparatus for abuses to boost transparency and reassure Americans worried about their civil freedoms in a new era of vast government surveillance technology. [Snip] "It’s not enough for me, as President, to have confidence in these programs," Obama said. “The American people need to have confidence in them as well." Turns out, it’s an outside group if by outside you mean people who’ve been outdoors recently.
Leno: President Obama and the Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras met in the White House. Obama and the Prime Minister of Greece talking about the economy. If that isn´t the blind leading the blind. Conan: Major League Baseball has announced that Alex Rodriguez has been suspended for 211 games. So if you’re familiar with the major league baseball schedule, it means he’ll be out for about a month. Conan: For his birthday President Obama played golf with friends. The winners got to ride in the presidential helicopter. The loser had to ride a Jet-ski with Joe Biden.
Hi, I’m Senator Tim Scott from South Carolina. On the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, my Republican colleagues and I are working to unleash the power of America’s energy sector — which will create jobs and keep more of your hard earned money in your own pockets. Unfortunately, President Obama cannot say the same. The President is so out of touch with unemployed Americans that he thinks tens of thousands of Keystone XL construction jobs are a ‘blip.’
Hi, everybody. For the past few weeks, I’ve been visiting folks across America to talk about what we need to do as a country to secure a better bargain for the middle class. I’ve been laying out my ideas for how we can build on the cornerstones of what it means to be middle class in America. A good job. A good education. Affordable health care when you get sick. A secure retirement even if you’re not rich. And the chance to own your own home.
"Ayeee I knocked out 5 woods since Zimmerman court!" young James Edwards tweeted on July 15 in the wake of George Zimmerman´s acquittal for the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. Edwards´s tweets surfaced after he and two of his homies were charged with killing Australian baseball player Chris Lane in Duncan, Oklahoma, last Friday. For the record, "woods" is short for peckerwoods, a derogatory term for white people. If Edwards, who is black, knocked out five woods as claimed, he would hardly be unique. As Colin Flaherty chillingly documents in his frequently updated book, White Girl Bleed A Lot, the "knock-out
During President Obama´s wide-ranging interview with CNN´s Chris Cuomo Friday, the president responded to a question about the "lack of action in Washington" with the claim that when it comes to shutting down the government to kill ObamaCare, his "Republican friends" tell him "privately" that they agree with him but are afraid of Rush Limbaugh and the Tea Party: Nobody thinks [a shutdown´s] good for the middle class. So the question is ultimately, if you are putting the American people first, if you are prioritizing them, then this shouldn´t be that difficult. And I´ve made this argument to my Republican
Conservative media´s total fixation on black-on-black and black-on-white crime isn´t going to end. Here´s why. There are a few black people up to no good in this country and Fox News is on it! So is Drudge Report. Vigilantly on the lookout, 24 hours a day, for stories about black youths behaving badly. This isn’t a particularly new phenomenon, but it’s intensified noticeably in the past year for at least two reasons. Conservatives, particularly white conservatives, feel a burning urgency to find a racial counterweight to the aftermath of Trayvon Martin’s shooting (including President Obama’s public comments about the incident), a
From bad to gross? A potential candidate to succeed disgraced San Diego mayor Bob Filner has been caught openly masturbating in restrooms on multiple occasions, according to investigative site VoiceOfOC.org.When Carl DeMaio, one of the leading Republican candidates to replace alleged serial sexual harasser Filner, was in the City Council, he would allegedly leave the dais during meetings to m*******te in a men’s room, former City Council president Ben Hueso said. Hueso, now a Democratic state senator, said he witnessed DeMaio in the act twice, but others suspect his inappropriate
A commercial photography business owned by opponents of same-sex marriage violated New Mexico´s anti-discrimination law by refusing to take pictures of a gay couple´s commitment ceremony, the state´s highest court ruled unanimously Thursday. Elaine Huguenin, who owns Elane Photography with her husband and is the business´s principal photographer, refused to photograph the ceremony because it violated her religious beliefs. The court held that "a commercial photography business that offers its services to the public, thereby increasing its visibility to potential clients" is bound by the New Mexico Human Rights Act "and must serve same-sex couples on the same basis that
Slowly at first, then all of a sudden, the Obama administration has devolved into the Obama regime. Obama does whatever he wants. Those pesky impediments on his predecessors — namely, federal law, the separation of powers, and the Constitution — have proved as tough as tissue paper in containing Obama’s ambition to impose statism on America. From Obamacare to unions to telephones, it’s basically another day, another decree. “I have to figure out what I can do outside of Congress through executive actions,” Obama reportedly told the Congressional Black Caucus last month. In Jacksonville on July 25, Obama announced, “Where I
For good reason, the bar for what makes us consider someone crazy in politics is getting higher all the time. As I’ve said, if you think Wall Street is rigged, the government is spying on you and that if you get out of line the Internal Revenue Service will come after you, you’re not considered a nut anymore.(Snip)The bothersome reality is that President Obama is inventing new laws, selectively choosing to enforce laws he likes and ignoring or amending the ones he doesn’t. Many writers, from George Will to Jeffrey Anderson to Charles Krauthammer have written about the president’s increasing
In recent weeks, some liberal commentators have taken to calling Ted Cruz a demagogue. They concede the freshman Republican senator from Texas is smart as hell. He´s an impressive speaker. An imposing debater. For those reasons, many liberals see Cruz as dangerous, pointing especially to his campaign for a completely unworkable proposal to defund Obamacare.(Snip)Acknowledging that Republicans don´t have the votes to defund the president´s health care law, Cruz essentially seeks to create a wave of public outrage that would force Congress to go along with the small number of Republicans behind the defunding initiative. If that doesn´t work, Cruz proposes
Over the last few weeks my morning paper has carried not one story but two that tell, in exquisite detail, how power is transacted in America today. Following the activities of a single family as it navigates and exploits the connection between riches, access, and influence, the New York Times is, perhaps without intending to, composing a gripping narrative of social climbing and favor trading. (Snip) The Clintons are perennials, giant corpse flowers whose periodic bloom overwhelms the surrounding environment. Bill used to be president, Hillary ran for president but lost, and after four years as secretary of state Hillary
President Obama urged law schools on Friday to consider cutting a year of classroom instruction, wading into a hotly debated issue inside the beleaguered legal academy. “This is probably controversial to say, but what the heck. I am in my second term, so I can say it,” Mr. Obama said at a town hall-style meeting at Binghamton University in New York. “I believe that law schools would probably be wise to think about being two years instead of three years.” The president’s surprising remarks, made while discussing how to make education more affordable, come at a time of crisis for
Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, has arguably the worst job in Washington. When the House of Representatives returns from August recess on Sept. 9, Boehner will have just 21 days (only nine of them working days) to find a way to pass a fiscal year 2014 government funding resolution. Shortly after that, Boehner will also have to raise the Treasury Department’s borrowing limit, and the wealthy Republican donor class are also pressuring Boehner to pass immigration reform that grants amnesty to current illegal immigrants and expands guest worker programs to create new ones. First and long The vast majority of Boehner’s caucus don’t
Women and children can be seen lying in the rubble as well as an apparent missile that caused the alleged attack on Wednesday, which according to the opposition, has killed more than a thousand. A UN team is already in Syria but only has permission to visit specific locations. [Snip] Chemical weapons experts have agreed some kind of chemical attack took place, but are unsure whether it was caused by a nerve agent. US President Barack Obama said the alleged use of chemical weapons was "a big event of grave concern," as Britain accused Damascus of unleashing the weapons and
