The Nasty GOP?
National Review Online, by Jim Geraghty

Original Article

‘The Republican brand is deeply damaged” was a painfully common assessment after the election. A lot of Republicans were eager to blame the party’s thoroughly lousy performance on the presidential nominee, but there is considerable evidence that the unpopularity goes well beyond that: Romney won more votes than GOP Senate candidates in almost all of the swing states — and in some fairly red states, including Arizona, Montana, Nebraska, and North Dakota. Conservative ideas, though, won in distinctly Democratic-leaning states once the word “Republican” was no longer associated with them. In Michigan, where Obama won handily,

A good cataloguing of all the wrong things going on.

FTA: Now, think about how this argument sounds to any gay or lesbian or to anyone who loves them — to their mothers, fathers, brothers, and friends. It takes a consensual relationship that more and more Americans see practiced by their friends, neighbors, and relatives and equates it with criminal acts, among the most reviled in our society.

Only way for GOP to win national elections in the future is to appeal to all Americans. No Palinesque classification into ´real´ Americans and not real ones.

The republican senate candidates in Indiana and Missouri were just plain stupid. It is not necessary to have an opinion about everything, and even if you do, there are times when one should shut up.
Most of us learn that as teenagers. The two candidates mentioned, did not.

I´d vote for a GOP candidate if s/he wasn´t a leftist along the lines of McCain or Romney. You know, someone who actually understood the issues and respected the rule of law. If the constitution is passe and individual freedom a chimera of the past and everyone else in the nation believes this, then at least have the stones to repeal our founding documents and start anew.

I´m not sure where those of us who understand why property rights are the foundation of all rights will go or what we´ll do. But we´ll manage.

On the other hand, if the bulk of Republicans actually do, honestly, believe in rugged individualism then the solution is not to make the GOP indistinguishable from the Democrat party (it´s nearly to that point as it is) but instead to truly embrace what we know works: sound social, economic and foreign policies.

At least 17 GOP States must invoke their 12 Amendment rights regardless of any potential national chaos. It is the only sane hope for America and the world.

Sorry Jim, after you got done with Romney’s “47%” remark you kinda went off the rails. The reason why literally all of these “issues” were big is because the Democrats and media made them. None of these are accurate portrayals of GOP positions, which is why they were news. In order for this assessment to be true, it would also HAVE TO BE TRUE that the majority of Americans are far left, ignorant and uninformed. Jury’s out.

Opposition to state forced un-defining of marriage is not hateful.
Opposition to taxpayer funded abortion of any kind for any reason is not hateful.
Opposition to taxpayer funded contraception is not hateful.

The “magic negro” comment originated from a liberal columnist at the LA Times, Jim. Why didn’t you mention that?

One of the worst analyses I’ve seen yet.

Can’t resist:
FTA: “Put another way, if some jerk in a bar came up and compared your relationship to your spouse to bestiality, you would probably be sorely tempted to knock his teeth out.”

So you’re saying the GOP is composed of drunken jerks who hang out in bars and make stupid remarks about men’s wives? And the proponent of un-defining marriage is calmly sitting at a table minding his own business?

What a lame a** illustration. Anyone who thinks that’s even a remotely accurate analogy to the marriage debate is too stupid to vote. But it is a perfect example of how the narrative is skewed to make the wrong party look like the one causing a fight.

Jim if you want to drink the koolaid because you think somehow turning into liberal-lite will win votes from committed socialists, leave me out. We need less spineless RINO´s who haven´t won an election decisively since Reagan won one for you to sit down and shut up. Don´t lecture me about how conservatism doesn´t work. It does work when we actually nominate one.

´Only way for GOP to win national elections in the future is to appeal to´ . . . American citizens. Period. AND to fix our broken ballot system. Locking arms, singing kumbaya, and becoming Liberal Lite won´t win anything because the Democrat Party will always one-up Republicans with even better door prizes.

The media is going to spin, spin, spin no matter what. The conservative candidate must be likeable above all else because of this, like it or not.

Now as to this past election, anyone who is trying to extrapolate ANYTHING from that election with its busloads of Somali´s who can´t speak english being brought into many, many counties to vote, etc, is NUTS. You can´t extrapolate anything from that. Or the others who don´t even know what they are voting for...sheeze.

Okay, so we lost a presidential election to the first Black President. Even though he was the worse president in recent memory, he was the incumbent and he ran a dirty campaign with he media covering for him.

So who´s the Nasty Party? The GOP needs to stop talking about this election. It´s over. They need to get dialed in and learn a thing or two and next time have a winning strategy.

Yeah, if only Romney and the GOP base weren´t so badly outclased by Obama and the Dem base in 2012, we´d have won by 20 points. I live in VA . After the election I was watching DVR´d shows and saw one of the ads Zero had placed locally. During the campaign I just fast forwarded through any campaign ads. This Zero ad was a definite scare ad toward people in nursing homes or families who might have a loved one in nursing homes. My eyes were opened to the lies Zero told during the campaign to possibly receive the majority of the vote in my state. I still think voter fraud gave him the win here.

Frustration is taking its toll in the liberals’ war against guns. President Obama, pushing his broad gun control agenda, said we should be ashamed if we’ve forgotten the Newtown shooting so soon. The New York Times opined that Obama is being shouted down by the “gun lobby,” even though he and Biden had been crisscrossing the country “…making a forceful case for a package of laws that would reduce gun violence.” That, of course, is the media narrative on gun control. For every issue there is a narrative: a set of assumptions and boundaries of thought

GOLFE-JUAN, France—Frank Samson has prepared for a long time to meet his Waterloo. The French lawyer impersonates Napoleon Bonaparte at re-enactment battles, but it is no idle hobby. Mr. Samson has found what he says are perfect replicas of the French general´s gray overcoat, he has studied Napoleon´s native Corsican tongue and he has had himself crowned emperor of France, in a cathedral yet. In 2015, he wants to lead thousands of military enthusiasts into the ultimate re-enactment: the 200th anniversary of the battle of Waterloo in Belgium. But an American rival stands in his way. Is it time to give up the fight against Obamacare? That’s a question some conservative health-care experts, pundits, and — more quietly — politicians are asking. In the first years after its passage, opponents had hoped that the Supreme Court would strike down the law or that a new president would sign its repeal before most of it took effect. But the Supreme Court decided to modify a few of its provisions instead of striking it down, and President Obama was reelected. Repeal is almost certainly off the table for four years. Obamacare will continue to be implemented.

As the bipartisan Gang of Eight works to complete a comprehensive immigration reform bill, there has been a growing consensus among Senate Republicans that the bill — so far seen by no one outside the Gang — should be the subject of multiple hearings and extended consideration inside the Senate Judiciary Committee. But on Sunday there were signs that consensus does not extend to the Republicans inside the Gang. Appearing on CBS, longtime immigration reform advocate and Gang member Sen. John McCain suggested the immigration issue is so familiar to lawmakers that multiple hearings will not be necessary.

Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. Gluten-free diets are all the rage, but they can be dangerous if not done right. What is gluten? It´s the spongy complex of proteins, found naturally in wheat, rye, and barley, that gives elasticity to dough and allows it to rise. When flour is moistened and either kneaded or mixed into dough, gluten molecules form an elastic, microscopic latticework that traps the carbon dioxide produced when yeast ferments, causing dough to inflate like a hot air balloon. Baking hardens the gluten, which helps the finished product keep its shape. Wheat — and gluten — is ubiquitous in the American diet.
