Billions in bearer bonds could be lost due to Hurricane Sandy: sources

| It’s the biggest mystery on Wall Street. Hurricane Sandy floodwaters inundated a 10,000-square-foot underground vault downtown, soaking 1.3 million bond and stock certificates — including bearer bonds that function like cash — and putting them in danger of turning to mush. A contractor working for the vault owner, the Depository Trust and Clearing Corp., is feverishly working to restore the paper. But the value of the threatened notes under 55 Water St. remains unknown to all but the innermost circle of Wall Street bankers. One source said $70 billion in bearer bonds were in jeopardy. DTCC —

Comments: Is it too much to expect that whoever was responsible for protection of these bonds would have had the foresight to keep them from harm?? After all, there was ample warning about the damage possible by this storm. The level of incompetence in this nation is astounding.

Didn´t DTC ever hear of zip-lock bags???
I´ve seen many bond certs. High grade paper, almost like U.S. currency. Almost impossible to destroy U.S. dollar bills in water.

Or maybe, should I say... could this situation possibly get any worse than this?

Just to add, as the article states, bearer munis have not been issued since 1982. Most munis have maturities 30 years or less, meaning that the number of bearer munis is very small. In addition, I have heard that DTC usually registers most bearer munis, with the rare exception of those held in safekeeping.
As already stated, I think this is a scam, FEMA handing out money to WS banks, obama as the card dealer.

I know the place they are talking about, it was a huge think when they started opening it up, it was supposed to be this ´safe from anything´ kind of place. I suspect they´re going to be sued out of existence for NOT BEING WATER PROOF!! I mean really, the place is under water level and the vaults aren´t waterproof? What idiot thought of that?

if you lose a bearer bond you can go to the paying agent and for about 5% you can buy a bond which indemnifies them.. and they will issue a replacement..

And a survey of New Yorkers indicates they believe that this storm/flood is due to global warming, and that they want billions spent on sea walls to prevent it ever happening again! Ha, ha, ha! Living here, sea walls will not help in this latest cycle (and it IS a cycle that will last about 10 years, as it did in the 1950s-early 1960s).
Maybe the vault contents will be confiscated under ´eminent domain.´

Baroness Thatcher was Conservative prime minister from 1979 to 1990. She was the first woman to hold the post. Her family is expected to make a further statement later. Baroness Thatcher, born Margaret Roberts, became the Conservative MP for Finchley, north London in 1959, retiring from the Commons in 1992. Having been education secretary, she successfully challenged former prime minister Edward Heath for her party´s leadership in 1975.

And we can reduce our deficit, stabilize our debt, and do so without sacrificing the kinds of investments that are going to be required to grow. During his remarks, the president spoke of the

One of the first political issues negotiators must tackle in crafting an immigration reform bill is among the most important: what to name it. It’s a decision that will bruise egos, create legacies and deeply affect subsequent messaging battles. “Every time the bill is mentioned in the press, you either have a brand that´s positive or a brand that doesn´t mean anything or even hurts you,” said Frank Sharry, the executive director of the pro-immigration reform group America’s Voice. The wrong name, he warned, could doom a good bill. “If there´s not a

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”

Put out an all-points bulletin: Millions of Americans have gone missing from the workforce. Every month that those would-be workers are gone raises the odds that they might never come back, dimming the prospects for future economic growth. The vanishing trend is more than a decade old, but it accelerated during the Great Recession. Throughout 2012, economists held out hope that it had stopped. But then came Friday’s jobs report, and hopes were dashed. The Labor Department reported that the U.S. labor force — everyone who has a job or is looking for one — shrank

Gluten-free diets are all the rage, but they can be dangerous if not done right. What is gluten? It´s the spongy complex of proteins, found naturally in wheat, rye, and barley, that gives elasticity to dough and allows it to rise. When flour is moistened and either kneaded or mixed into dough, gluten molecules form an elastic, microscopic latticework that traps the carbon dioxide produced when yeast ferments, causing dough to inflate like a hot air balloon. Baking hardens the gluten, which helps the finished product keep its shape. Wheat — and gluten — is ubiquitous in the American diet.
