Hostess liquidation puts 286
in NC out of work

News Observer [Raleigh,NC], by Kelly Poe

Original Article

Posted By:Fiesta del sol, 11/17/2012 7:14:04 AM

ROCKY MOUNT -- The 286 people who work in the Merita bread factory on North Church Street are out of work following Friday’s announcement that parent company Hostess will seek permission to end operations and liquidate its assets. About 75 of the workers participated in a nationwide strike that started at midnight Tuesday. Hostess Brands had warned the workers to return to work by 5 p.m. Thursday or face the company’s liquidation. The deadline came and went as picketers stood around a heater under umbrellas in the rain. “It’s five o’ clock and nobody’s crying,” one woman yelled.

Comments:
The comments on this article are indicative of the tolerant liberal mindset. These people don´t deserve their jobs because people are getting fat on unhealthy Twinkies made out of GMO´s. Totalitarianism comes so easy to them. The enviro movement and the ´healthy lifestyle´ liberals scare me.

Well, NC is a right-to-work state, for all the good it did those 286.

This is one of Old Bev Perdue´s farewell gifts as she departs the governor´s mansion.

We are a right to work state, yet:
About 300 workers at the Merita Bread plant in Orlando may soon be out of a job after the Hostess company filed for bankruptcy last week.
The wonderful warm bread smell from Michigan Ave to I-4, will be sadly missed.

These people actually think they´re heroic for surrendering their jobs at the altar of Obama.Too bad the people with this same mentality are running the government from top to bottom.Of course nobody quits a government job while they congratulate morons like this.

If you ever showed a liberal a balance sheet, smoke would come out of their ears.I only wish the owner blamed the closing on Obamacare.

I say if you participate in a strike that puts the company out of business and therefore you out of work you shouldn´t be entitled to unemployment benefits since you voluntarily participated. Same as quitting!

AFL-CIO leader Richard Trumka, most frequent visitor to the White House, has led the Obama parade in switching blame (for everything) from President George Bush to Mitt Romney. He has invoked and blamed Bain Capital in his fiery speeches against Hostess Brands Co. Now, his union workers are out of their jobs and Mr. Trumka is claiming victory. The workers are blindly cheering, too, because they think that President Obama will take care of them while they lounge around idly and that will probably be true - for a little while - and then the free benefits are going to go away and reality will set in. Mr. Trumka is going to have less dues-paying members and yet all of these people rejoice. One more step ´forward´ for President Obama´s non-producing and idle America - God help us.

Hostess was in bad financial shape. In the last 10 years they had already gone through one bankruptcy and were in the midst of another, and they told their workers that their financial situation was precarious and that, in order for the company to survive, workers had to give back some of the gains they had made in salary and benefits (that were major factors in Hostess bankruptcies) in terms of an 8% pay cut.

So, let me get this straight. On the one hand there was having a job--at reduced pay, but still a job and, on the other hand, there was having no job. Those were the choices, and union workers chose to strike, and push the company over the cliff to its death.

What logic. Way to go!

I guess they all thought (that fraction of union workers that even bothered to vote on a strike) that the company--staggering along on its last legs--was bluffing, or perhaps they figured an Obamaphone and free air time, welfare, and sitting at home watching endless TV were peferable to having a real job.

P.S.--According to another article about this situation here on Lucianne, these workers --bakers, and delivery truck drivers remember, not highly educated rocket scientists--were pulling down as much as $22 per hour plus medical benefits, 9 weeks annual paid vacation, and a company pension.

Moreover, the Teamsters, the other union involved, decided not to strike and had issued a statement saying that its own financial experts had certified that Hostess was, indeed, on its last financial legs and was not bluffing about having to close if there was a strike against it, and still the Bakers union went on strike.

Talk about" cutting off your nose to spite your face"!

The Teamsters talked to management and saw the balance sheet, and told their members not to strike. They even urged the AFL-CIO to not be stupid. Trumka is still telling his out-of-work members management took 300% pay increases, and this was just a union busting ploy. And the idiots who struck still believe him.

Is it too naive to ask why Hostess didn´t simply hire other non-union workers who wanted jobs?

Remember the airline strike during the Reagan years? He fired their arses and the airlines hired other people. Why can´t this be done? You mean to tell me that non-union workers cannot be found to replace the Hostess union workers in a State like NC where jobs are scarce?

I don´t get it. Where is it carved in stone that when union workers refuse to work, they get fired and replaced by non-union workers who are willing to work?

M2, the company did bring in some temps. Some jobs require experience, and cannot be taught in a day.

Observer 177, the delivery truck drivers are not just delivering product: they are responsible for sales, too.

Shipping and sales route drivers all came into work. Do not blame them. Some production workers crossed the line as well, but not nearly enough. Production was less than half. Obviously, food is sensitive in production, especially bread, where shelf life is short. The Philadelphia plant completely shut down when they went on strike. Rocky Mount could not begin to keep up with Philadelphia´s demands as well as their own.

Lamont Phillips misunderstanding of his pension is telling: he thought that because the company could no longer contribute to it, that it no longer existed. I have no doubt the union encouraged this thinking.

My husband *was* the plant manager in Rocky Mount. He worked 60 hours a week, including weekends at home. As I asked in another post, who pickets a company in bankruptcy?

Trumka can just as well blame Michelle Obama for telling people not to purchase and consume items like Twinkies. It´s pretty simple, when a company can no longer sell enough of its products it will eventually go out of business, and there is nothing that the loud talking union thugs can do about that, everybody just loses their jobs.

Here are my favorite parts from the article:

1) Lamont Phillips worked at the plant for 23 years. He is 41. He would qualify for full pension benefits in about 8 years. That would mean he could retire at age 49! Say what?

2) Johnny Thomas worked at the plan for 9 years. Thomas said he worries for those co-workers who can’t go back to school. He said many of his colleagues are single parents.

Typical Obama voters. Retire on a union pension early, don´t go to school (too hard, I guess), and don´t get married. Believe in Obama and the union bosses for your future. And when Obama and the union bosses throw you overboard, guess what? Obama and the union bosses WILL get their pensions. These sorry sap Hostess union workers will not get theirs. Serves them right for being ignorant, dumb, and stupid.

The Obama administration touted 7 million sign-ups by March 31 as “success.” When that goal appeared to be unreachable, the administration suggested that maybe 5 or 6 million would be enough. Now, as if by magic, they have their number. Somehow. All along, the administration has touted false numbers of enrollees. All along, the administration has neglected to admit that Obamacare is

A few months back, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius stated for the record that 7 million Obamacare sign-ups by the end of March would constitute success. She was clear about it. But then February came, and February always stinks. It’s just a lousy month. You’re tired of winter, you’re still miles away from spring, and no one was signing up for Obamacare. That 7 million figure looked totally unreachable. So Sebelius does what every other member of the Obama administration does when confronted with inconvenient facts. She lied. In a Tuesday appearance on HuffPost Live to discuss outreach to African American communities,

A triumphant President Barack Obama declared his signature medical insurance overhaul a success, saying it has made America´s health care system ´a lot better.´ But buried in the 7.1 million enrollments he announced in a heavily staged Rose Garden appearance is a more unsettling reality. Numbers from a RAND Corporation study that has been kept under wraps suggest that barely 858,000 previously uninsured Americans – nowhere near 7.1 million – have paid for new policies and joined the ranks of the insured by Monday night. Others were already insured, including millions who lost coverage when their existing policies were suddenly

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, criticized last year by a Vatican official for her support of abortion, received a rosary Tuesday from President Obama that was blessed by Pope Francis. Mrs. Pelosi told reporters of the president’s gift after having lunch with Mr. Obama at the White House. The president met with the pope last week at the Vatican. “I was happy to receive a rosary blessed by Pope Francis,” she said. “It means a great deal to me.” Last year, a Vatican official in Rome said that Mrs. Pelosi should be denied communion. “This is a person who obstinately,

With Chris Christie in deep trouble, Republican poobahs are reportedly looking to Jeb Bush to save their party in 2016. The former two-term governor of Florida speaks fluent Spanish, is a convert to Catholicism, and has high name recognition. Jeb could raise millions of dollars over night by just saying “yes” to running. Despite all this, there are strong reasons Republicans should say no to him. 1. His last name is poison. Let’s face it, if Jeb Bush had the last name of Something Else he would have already run for president in 2008 or 2012. According to a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll registered voters were asked if they would definitely NOT vote for Jeb Bush and 50 percent said they would not.

New General Motors CEO Mary Barra will testify before Congress Tuesday about why it took so long for GM to issue product safety recalls involving faulty ignition switches that caused air bags to fail in crashes, contributing to thirteen deaths. She will testify alongside David Friedman, the acting head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), who will be expected to explain why the government did not act sooner. They ought to be accompanied by former Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood, as well as "car czars" Steven Rattner and Ron Bloom, together with White House and Treasury officials who oversaw

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is "looking" at banning the sale of tobacco at military installations. According to one military publication, Hagel appears to support it. "As the Navy considers banning tobacco sales on all bases and ships, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel gave a strong endorsement of the review Monday, and suggested that he would be in favor of a ban," reports Stars and Stripes. “I don’t know if there’s anybody in America who still thinks that tobacco is good for you,” Stars and Stripes quotes Hagel as saying. “We don’t allow smoking in any of our government buildings. Atlanta – Vegetarians may have a lower BMI and drink alcohol sparingly, but vegetarian diets are tied to generally poorer health, poorer quality of life and a higher need for health care than their meat-eating counterparts. A new study from the Medical University of Graz in Austria finds that vegetarians are more physically active, drink less alcohol and smoke less tobacco than those who consume meat in their diets. Vegetarians also have a higher socioeconomic status and a lower body mass index. But the vegetarian diet — characterized by a low consumption of saturated fats and cholesterol that includes increased intake

The story of the first-generation Ghanian-American student accepted by all eight Ivy league schools is wonderful, but it also stirs up the tension between black Americans and recent African immigrants — especially when you describe him as "not a typical African-American kid." That´s been the reaction to USA Today´s profile on Kwasi Enin, a Long Island high schooler who got into the nation´s most competitive schools through hard work and, according to IvyWise CEO Katherine Cohen, being African (and being male). At one point the piece reads: Being a first-generation American from Ghana also helps him stand out, Cohen says. "He´s

Senate majority leader Harry Reid has a whole page on his official Senate.gov website devoted to revealing "THE FACTS ABOUT THE KOCH BROTHERS." One of the alleged facts promoted on Reid´s website is that the Kochs do not pay any corporate taxes: “They are known for bankrolling conservative, Libertarian and Tea Party causes and became poster boys for corporate tax reform last year when an Obama Administration official suggested Koch is organized as an S Corp. and so pays no corporate level taxes.” The claim that the Koch brothers don´t pay corporate income taxes was first made by former White House official
