Remove the Carriers
from the Persian Gulf

Commentary Magazine, by Michael Rubin

Original Article

Posted By:StormCnter, 11/17/2012 6:04:49 AM

Several months ago, I asked a retired admiral what sign the United States could give that its patience had truly worn thin with Iran. “Remove the carriers from the Persian Gulf,” he responded. At first, that struck me as dumb: The Iranians would depict the American withdrawal as another sign that the United States was weak and in retreat. “Don’t worry,” he assured me. “Any Revolutionary Guardsmen worth his weight would understand.” The Persian Gulf is shallow and the international shipping lanes relatively narrow. The Iranian navy has long drilled swarming American vessels with small boats.

Years ago I was listening to an expert on middle-east affairs. He claimed that the iranians believed a hit on one of our aircraft carriers would be so demoralizing it would cripple us.
With the people we have now in the majority in this country and in control of our government, I tend to agree with him.

If these are the facts, why are they in the Gulf to begin with?

This is how idiot-boy intends to cut the size of our navy. He´ll let his muz-bros use the Persian Gulf groups for target practice.

In May 1987, the "nearness" of everything and everybody in the Persian Gulf was a serious disadvantage to the crew of the USS Stark. (Wikipedia has the story.)
When it comes to defending a carrier battle group, when challenged by a determined enemy, what´s changed?

I´ll second the retired 0-7´s emotion...we don´t need them there..send them over the horizon where they can´t be touched..then light up Iran..should take a couple of hours..

A preference for shadow over substance by the Administration is a strong possibility but any Chief of Naval Operations worth his salt would resign before exposing the Carrier Groups to needless risk.

The "optics" administration likes to drive their carriers up and down the gulf as though it was saturday night downtown. The real skippers would park them over the horizen.

The Iranians have been armed by the Chinese. China´s great strategic need has been to clear the Taiwan Strait of hostile capital ships in the event of war with Taiwan. They have developed very sophisticated shore to ship missiles. Iran has been armed with these missiles. #7 is absolutely right. The Chief of Naval Operations should have resigned before he issued an order to put those big blue water ships in the narrow confines of the Persian Gulf.

If you want to see just how wimpy our navy has become, go look up the Natl Press Club speech by the Chief of Naval Operations. The guy is right out of the Hillary/ Susan Rice ´dialogueing´ school of warfare. Yes, folks,we´re building a global force with our partners in the mideast and China. But there is some good news- they´ve decided to have men and women at the Naval Academy wear the same uniforms.

Reply 11 - Posted by: bighambone, 11/17/2012 10:13:49 AM     (No. 9020418)

Back in 1941 as the Second World War was going strong and Japan and the USA were about to go at it, President Franklin D. Roosevelt transferred most of the US Pacific Fleet´s battleships from Long Beach and San Diego, CA, to Pearl Harbor, HI, where they were in range of the Imperial Japanese Navy carrier strike force. Then came December 7, 1941 and the Japanese essentially sank or put out of action all of those US battleships.

Essentially the same thing is happening again, as President Barak Obama has put two big US aircraft carriers and their supporting vessels well within range of Iranian would be attackers and their shore to ship Chinese made missiles. There is really no tactical reason for those two carriers to be in the Persian Gulf, and they should be removed to more distant and safer positions where they can still mount effective air attacks if that becomes necessary.

#13 nailed that one, bigtime!! The Persian Gulf is a fish pond when it comes to moving carrier task forces. As was perviously stated, our carriers need to be in the ocean where smart skippers can park their rigs just over the horizon, loaded and ready to go. But they need to room to maneuver when attacked. Just common sense, guys.

Reply 15 - Posted by: KTWO, 11/17/2012 11:54:08 AM     (No. 9020605)

No expert but I have worried about this.

Getting our fleet them out of the gulf essentially negates swarming tactics by small Iranian vessels.

Instead of being able to attack within minutes they would have to be at sea for hours. They would be detected and attacked by our aircraft all the way.

It would also negate Iran´s air force which is not powerful but be a distraction when paired with their naval attack.

OTOH it would be easier for Iran to mine the gulf and to launch attacks on tankers.

Ultimately the area must choose its own fate. If the Arab gulf states won´t stand up against the Iranians they will be ruled by them. It would require some Arab unity, they aren´t big on that.

#11. Good observation. You describe the result of the move to Pearl Harbor. But IMO the move made sense, the US was rapidly preparing for a Pacific War.

The success of the attack was not because of location, of simply being in Hawaii. It was from not being alert. Our military had the means to detect the attack but was not wisely using them.

The gulf situation differs. Geography really is a vital constraint in those waters.

Several 2016 presidential campaigns are already up and running — some more quietly than others — and Republicans hoping to be their party’s nominee are preparing for a primary that could potentially bear little resemblance to those of 2012 and 2008. As the party grapples with a shifting electorate, it is divided over differences on gay marriage, immigration reform, national security policy and even guns — gaps that could only widen by 2015, when campaigns will be in full swing. Potential candidates are busy searching for safe corners on these contentious issues and are either acknowledging the profound shifts,

In Philadelphia, at a human abattoir on Lancaster Avenue, is where it ends, not where it starts. It starts with the perversion of language. It starts when the icons of a dissipated culture reduce a baby to a “fetus.” From there, Yeats’s blood-dimmed tide rolls rapidly in. Before long, a baby is not a person but a punishment, as President Barack Obama framed the matter in his familiar off-the-cuff iciness. Of course, to describe newborn children in their boundless possibilities and wonder would be to acknowledge, foremost, their humanity. That is why, instead, abortion enthusiasts must grope for words

The Public Safety and Second Amendment Rights Protection Act of 2013, as proposed by Republican senators Pat Toomey and Mark Kirk and Democrats Joe Manchin and Charles Schumer, deals partly in symbolism. It “reaffirms,” for instance, an existing ban on government firearms registries, and establishes Washington’s umpteenth blue-ribbon panel — the National Commission on Mass Violence — to “study the availability and nature of firearms, including the means of acquiring firearms, issues relating to mental health, and all positive and negative impacts of the availability and nature of firearms on incidents of mass violence.”

Philadelphia abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell is accused of killing newborn babies at his filthy clinic, and it was apparently very lucrative work. Gosnell allegedly "snipped" the spinal cords of seven newborns after performing illegal late-term abortions. Prosecutors believe he killed many other fetuses in their third-trimester and destroyed related records. Gosnell is also accused of running an absolutely filthy clinic — known as the Women´s Medical Society — that had untrained staff give at least one patient a fatal dose of the painkiller Demerol.

A veterans organization in a New York town is fighting for its right to fly a patriotic flag after the city council refused to let the group display the flag, calling it a symbol of the Tea Party with right-wing connotations. The United Veterans Memorial & Patriotic Association replaced a tattered American flag at the New Rochelle Armory, flying the Gadsden flag underneath it. The bright yellow “Don’t Tread On Me” flag has been used by the Navy and Marine Corps since 1775. When a city council member complained to the city manager that he found the flag offensive,

As we once again face the specter of illegal alien amnesty, and the permanent Democratic majority it will guarantee, it is critical to understand how the Left plays. They are unethical to the core, but we are so frequently deluded by their tactical use of language and emotion, that we are unequipped to deal with them effectively. The result: they win. This cannot happen again, unless we are all willing to start calling Obama “President for Life,” and Democrats, the “Commissars.”Introduction Changes in public perception happen gradually. With President Obama, there’s always a catch. In the 2014 budget he announced last week, Obama proposed a more accurate way of calculating the inflation rate for annual cost-of-living increases in Social Security. It’s a technical change in pursuit of honesty and good government. And if adopted, it would cause benefits to grow more slowly, though almost imperceptibly so. Republican leaders in Congress ought to be delighted since they had “championed”—Obama’s word—the idea in the first place. Then came the catch. The president’s price for adopting this gentle reform was hundreds of billions in new tax increases.

The board met in Paris to hear his decision, and lauded his decision as "courageous." Bernheim is usually introduced as an “agrégé,” a sort of “doctor,” a prestigious academic title obtained by civil servants in competitive tests. In Who’s Who, in biographies and in an official book of the Consistoire central des Juifs de France, which administers religious services, the title agrégé of philosophy always appears under Bernheim’s name.

As a native New Yorker, I´ve seen its middle class population decline over the years due to its neglect of blue collar families which is ironic since this is a Democrat city. With the recent arrests of several local politicians for corruption perhaps New Yorkers will pay more attention to those they put in office. Given their past indifference in local elections this is highly unlikely.
