“A modest tax increase on
the wealthy is not going to
break their backs” said Obama

MercoPress [Montevideo, Uruguay], by Staff

President Obama has reiterated his call for high earners in the US to pay more in taxes, in his first news conference since winning re-election. He called for quick legislation to rule out tax rises on the first 250.000 dollars of income, but refused to extend cuts for the wealthiest 2%. “We should not hold the middle class hostage while we debate tax cuts for the wealthy,” Mr Obama said. The US faces an end-of-year “fiscal cliff” of spending cuts and tax rises. The fiscal cliff would see the George W Bush-era tax cuts expire

It won´t be anywhere near enough to solve the problem so what´s the point? It´s equivalent to giving a bum a quarter.

Since he claimed that renewing the Bush tax rates would "cost" $1 trillion, I take that to mean that his idea of a "modest" tax increase is $1 trillion. Apparently he is still into the choom, and some pretty potent stuff at that.

I heard this theory on the Larry Kudlow show.

If Bob Obama gets his tax increase on the wealthy, after a few months he´ll say it wasn´t enough, and now they´ll have to increase the taxes on the middle class. And once the camel´s nose is under the tent, the rest of the camel is soon to follow.

Hey, he´s already told us revenue is immaterial. The idea is to hit "the wealthy."

Period. It´s impossible for "the wealthy" to get without "taking" from the noble, deserving, oppressed poor. Or so it goes in the alternate universe of the Left.

We have got to stop seeing Obama as "another politician," further Left than most. We have got to stop responding and engaging as though this is just "more politics. We have got to fight, tooth and nail, 24/7, no quarter. We have got to get this mind-set in place right now.

Probably with new leaders.

When Obama caved on the Bush tax cuts a couple years ago,he got one hell of a backlash from his base, that´s why he´s sticking so hard to it now.Calling it the "Bush tax cut for the rich"really inflames the left and they´ll all rally around getting rid of them till the cows come home. Obama won´t accept another kind of tax increase because he specially wants to nail Bush´s.

Then the left has the gall to run around and say the rich don´t pay their fair share when every pie chart shows they pay the overwhelming portion of income taxes.

We´re always told raising cigarette taxes is to help people quit, yet 1 in 5 people in this country still smoke.

And because they are rich the homestead deduction is gone and they can´t claim their kids. When the gov´t comes for the top 10% instead of the top 2%, know that is $60,000 and up.

If you need revenue, you´ll get more by moving everyone back to the Clinton tax rates. As President Obama has said, everyone should have skin in the game. And Medicare and Social Security are losing money each year, so the Payroll Tax Holiday must end. And more money will come in from the Obamacare taxes. With all those taxes, even Obama ought to be able to cut spending until there is no deficit. For 4 years Obama has claimed there is no link between taxes and economic health. Let run the experiment and find out. If the country crashes, we´ll reinstate the Bush rates permanently.

Hemisphere: Venezuela´s price and currency controls have wrought what they always wreak: monster shortages. And it stinks, literally, with toilet paper, diapers, soap and deodorant joining drugs on the list. That shutoff from global standards is what prevents willing buyers from acquiring goods from abroad, the source of 80% of Venezuela´s consumer staples. No foreign currency, no purchases. Further down the line, price controls have driven more shortages as costs to produce in an economy with a 56% inflation rate have made it impossible to turn a profit.

Geopolitics: So are Vladimir Putin´s actions in Ukraine just self-defense, as he claims, or a sign of a new sort of war with the West? Conclusions of a 19th century contemporary of Alexis de Tocqueville suggest the latter. Back in 1839, around the time political thinker de Tocqueville made his long visit to the U.S. and found an exceptional nation, writing about it in his classic "Democracy in America," another curious Frenchman, the Marquis de Custine, made a similar pilgrimage to Russia. Staple shortages in Venezuela are exacerbating, as mirrored by restricted sales in many stores across the country. The supply of personal care products fails to meet demand. Only one or two brands of a single item can be found on shelves. Similarly, drugs stocks are running low. In a bid to meet demand, pharmacies have also been limiting the sale of certain drugs to only two items per person. Since April 2012, the Central Bank of Venezuela has been reporting shortage of personal care and home cleaning products, which sales are restricted as well.
