| Authorities say four people are dead and 17 others are injured after a train slammed into a parade float headed to a West Texas event honoring wounded veterans. Union Pacific spokesman Tom Lange says the eastbound train was sounding its horn before it hit the float Thursday as it approached a railroad crossing in Midland. He says the crossing gate and lights were working at the time. Lange didn´t know if the train crew saw the float approaching. City of Midland spokesman Ryan Stout says 10 of those injured are in critical condition at Midland Memorial Hospital,

The driver must not have been paying any attention to where he was. Flashing red lights, sound and a guard comes down like a minute before the train reaches the crossing.
At this location, the distance between Highway 80 (Front St.) is not great enough for the truck and trailer´s length to clear the highway, but this type of situation happens frequently and traffic backs up. More photos at mywesttexas.com.

A fast moving train takes several miles to stop. This has been known for more than a 100 years.
The train engineer blows his horn, and gates go down. The gates are automatic, operating from the same network as the trackside signals. The gate electronics also sends a signal to the engineer and the system controller about the proper operation of the gates.
The incompetence lies totally with the float driver. There is no other person or thing responsible. He
(or she) must be certain that there is adequate space to clear the tracks before he proceeds.
Condolences to the others which were killed or injured.
BTW, I am involved in the trackside signaling business.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, was well-liked at among his high school classmates, who are struggling to believe him capable of carrying out the Boston Marathon bombing. Yushun Tsou was on the wrestling team at the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School with Tsarnaev, and has posted a video of him practising in a basement and dancing in front of the camera when they were at high school.

They go by such names as Gypsy, Maisy, Cooper, Lincoln and Shiner Bob, and their whereabouts in the days after Wednesday’s devastating fertilizer plant explosion in West has been heavy on the minds of their West human owners. They are the pets of West residents affected by the disaster, and while some evacuees were able to take their pets with them, others have had to wait for news. In Obama´s Audacity of Hope, he stated, "I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in any ugly direction."
