Week After Election;
PA, OH Worst Hit

The Department of Labor has announced that new jobless claims rose by a staggering 78,000 in the first week after the election, reaching a seasonally-adjusted total of 439,000. Over the past year, and in the weeks leading up to the election, jobless claims were said to be declining, dipping as low as 339,000, with the media proclaiming that they had reached the "lowest level in more than four years." Now, suddenly, the news seems far less rosy.

I guess Hurricane Sandy ravaged Ohio much worse than first thought. 20 mph winds and a quarter inch of rain causes 20,000 to lose their jobs.

As a Central PA´er with nothing but disdain for the festering pustule aka Philly, once again a mea culpa for the trash therein that hasn´t done an honest day´s work in decades that again STOLE the election. Exceptions for the few working class folk trapped therein or any Ldotters also.

Philly, Pittsburgh and Detroit have the worst, "large" cities bond ratings in the country...and Cleveland isn´t too far ahead of them. It´s amazing to me that there is any productivity left in these places AT ALL.

Of course the books were cooked.

Looking forward: Pub congressmen can only vote "present" on economic issues.

Compromise, and they share the blame.

Oppose, and they are obstructionists who shoulder all the blame.

"Present" is the only way to avoid giving the Dems political cover.

#8, way to toe the party line on this news, but I´m not buying it. New York, one of the hardest hit by Sandy, saw a DECLINE in claims. And, as others on here have pointed out, Pennsylvania and Ohio were barely effected by Sandy. So, we´re supposed to believe that a little rain can cause unemployment claims to spike?

Yep, rain caused it, and not Zero´s disastrous economic policies. Sieg Heil, Bambi!

I live in NE Ohio and #5 doesn´t know how badly NE Ohio was hit - it was very windy - lots of trees down, lots of people without power for a week or more.

That said, Ohio and PA asked for it, they got it. If only the rest of us that voted for Romney didn´t have to pay that price too.

And more good news, union members! In order to help out those that have lost their jobs (BTW, nice timing on the release of data, BLS) your union masters will be increasing your dues, which will conveniently be deducted from your checks automatically.
Congratulations, OH PA.

~~Both states had been targeted by the presidential campaigns. President Obama highlighted his record of job creation in Ohio in particular, focusing on the automobile industry. The state reported 6,450 new jobless claims in the week after the election--second-highest after Pennsylvania, which recorded 7,766 new claims.~~

And, due to our ´progressive´ news media, this information will NOT be mentioned on our evening news programs.

You´ve just described September in Jersey.

I´m sorry for the %99 of Ohio that did NOT vote for the Wan, but if they didn´t en masse march on Cleveland and Cincy to fix those areas, OH owns it.

As does PA.

In another potential blow for the president's Ohio reelection campaign, Jeep, the rugged brand President Obama once said symbolized American freedom, is considering giving up on the United States and shifting production to China. Such a move would crash the economy in towns like Toledo, Ohio, where Jeeps are made and supplied, and rob the community of the economic security they thought Obama's auto bailout assured them.

Decrying the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act as way too complex, he warned the acting Medicare director that Obamacare is "so complicated and if it isn´t done right the first time, it will just simply get worse."

The sequester may have many across the country singing the blues, but for President Obama, it was all about Memphis Soul. Even with the threat of furloughs and government cuts sparked by the sequester, Obama took the time to enjoy a star-studded concert at the White House tonight. The White House celebration of Memphis Soul music in the East Room--which included special guest appearances by Queen Latifah and Justin Timberlake--is likely to rile Obama´s Republican foes. Some conservatives have called on Obama to give up golf, especially since popular public tours of the White House have been canceled because of

In the message he issued along with his budget proposal on Wednesday morning, President Barack Obama said he wants to see 4-year-old children in the United States enrolled in public schools. Obama said America needs to start enrolling 4-year-olds to make sure the children are “better prepared for the demands of the global economy” and to help parents save on "child-care costs." After saying the United States needs to “equip our citizens with the skills and training” to fill jobs in manufacturing, energy and infrastructure, Obama said, “And that has to start at the earliest possible age.”

Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius conceded Monday that implementing the Affordable Care Act has been more complicated and frustrating than the Obama administration expected, largely due to Republicans who have opposed the law´s state-based exchanges and Medicaid expansion. "The politics has been relentless and that continues," Sebelius said. "There was some hope that once the Supreme Court ruled in July, and then once an election occurred there would be a sense that, ´This is the law of the land, let´s get on board, let´s make this work.´"
