Red Cross pushes back on Sandy response, calls it ´near flawless´

| The American Red Cross, which bills itself as “the world´s largest humanitarian network,” is pushing back against critics of its response to superstorm Sandy, with the head of the organization saying its relief effort has been “near flawless” despite criticism from stranded storm victims and elected officials. Two weeks after the storm slammed the East Coast, leaving millions of residents without power and in need of food, warmth and shelter, the venerable nonprofit has taken a public battering over what many victims and some officials saw as a lackluster and unfocused response.

non profit? Have you ever paid attention to the salary of the head honcho? The Salvation Army is there and doesn´t toot their own horn. I refuse to donate to the Red Cross and I just phoned Salvation Army headquarters asking why MSM continue to credit the Red Cross and not a word about the salvation army or any other group that is donating their time, money and care. The Red Cross isn´t affilated with christians, is that the reason??????

Here is the problem with Red Cross. When disaster strikes, they want money (so they can purchase goods in bulk) and they wanted trained volunteers. They know from experience that this is the most efficient way to get needed product and assistance to those in distress.
Now, that game plan works well in small disasters - an apartment complex lost to fire, a flooded neighborhood. It doesn´t wok so well in catastrophic disasters - a Katrina, a Sandy. Red Cross can´t simply take the money and purchase provisions locally; if there is a statewide shortage of gasoline and bottled water, Red Cross can´t buy it, either. As for trained volunteers - many of those trained in the past are now your disaster victims.
There is a motto in the nonprofit world, "Let people give in the way they desire to give." Red Cross should let locals provide supplies they can find as well as volunteer. (Put a 2-hour training on-line and let ´em come.) Those out of the area? Encourage cash donations. But don´t think you have all the answers.

I belong to a small Catholic church. During Katrina, we took in and housed, clothed, and fed 20 families. Some as small as three, some families as large as seven. We were stretched very thin on funds, we contacted the Red Cross for some possible assistance taking care of these people. The came to our facility and deemed it not worthy of Red Cross support because we had only two bathrooms, no showers, and were having the families take turns with the cooking. This obviously didn´t meet their standards. We still housed the people, helped them get local jobs, brought them a few at a time to our homes for showering for 3 months. All their needs were met, and they eventually moved on. Screw the Red Cross, I will NEVER donate a penny to them!

I remember when they raised many millions after 9/11, they used very little of the money to actually help people. They used much of it for ´other purposes´. Yeah right.
I haven´t given them a dime in years. My brther-in-law talked about how they sold coffee and doughnuts to soldiers during the Korean War and the Salvation Army provided the same free of charge.

I despise the Red Cross. My dad served in WWII and Korea. HE said they charged soldiers for coffee and donuts while he was overseas! CHARGED THEM! Then, in 1965, my dad was stationed in Turkey and mom and us kids were left stateside because Turkey was deemed too dangerous for families. Mom didn´t hear from dad for almost two months. Calling overseas was in it´s infancy and unaffordable on a Staff Sargent´s pay. Finally, she contacted the Red Cross. The cable from the Air Force had never reached my mom. Dad, was very sick and in the Air Force hospital, but was recovering but not well enough to write at that time. The Red Cross then proceeded to CHARGE my dad for their services. It was taken out of his Air Force pay. They are even worse, now. Never, NEVER will they get one cent from our family. We give to The Salvation Army and Samaritans Purse. The Red Cross can go, well, you know...sorry, I feel so strongly about this!

Within a day of the Oklahoma City bombing, officials had named their suspect: Timothy McVeigh. Within two days of the 9/11 attacks, investigators had zeroed in on al Qaeda as the perpetrator. But as loved ones mourn the deaths of three people and dozens remain hospitalized from dual bombings at the Boston Marathon, two questions continue to hound authorities: Who triggered the attack, and why? Even for seasoned investigators, the theories run the gamut on whether Monday´s attack was an act of domestic or foreign terrorism. The reluctance of journalists to cover the crimes of abortionist Kermit Gosnell predates his trial. His indictment in January 2011 received minor and evasive coverage, as it inconveniently coincided with the Roe v. Wade anniversary. Pro-abortion journalists didn’t want the grand jury’s horror at seven acts of infanticide and the killing of one woman to spoil their nostalgic ruminations over the glorious emergence of abortion rights. After all, they had promised a post-Roe world of “safe, legal, and rare” abortion. No more ghastly “back-alley” procedures, they said. Gosnell’s indictment exploded their myth of progress, revealing a culture in which abortion

Unabated, unabashed, and increasingly unhinged, the sordid parade continues apace. Last week, Barack Obama flew some of the Newtown families to Washington, D.C., for a rally at which he argued for the putting aside of “politics” that disagree with his own, warned against “political stunts” (presumably with the exception of the one he was performing), and declared a monopoly on “common sense.” This weekend, the president ceded the pulpit of his weekly address to Francine Wheeler, a grieving mother, so that, in the name of “doing something” that might have prevented her son’s death, she could urge the passage

As federal services from air-traffic control to White House tours are ratcheted down thanks to the budget sequestration, millions of illegal aliens are now eagerly await billions in illegitimate Treasury payments, courtesy of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Two programs, the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) provide cash payments to low-income parents who pay no income tax and fail to have a valid Social Security number. The IRS makes it easy. The tax collection agency routinely issues an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) to individuals who file income-tax returns but are not eligible

The 2012 national election continues to be a puzzle. Barack Obama won reelection with a solid 51 percent of the vote, and Democrats picked up 2 Senate seats, expanding their majority to 55-45. Yet the House of Representatives remained in Republican control, 234-201, yielding the divided government we have today. Liberal analysts tend to blame the Democrats’ minority status in the House on Republican gerrymandering, which is ironic considering how expertly their own politicians have rigged districts when given the chance. Indeed, the Democrats’ redistricting of Texas in the 1990s remains a wonderment.

As the world bids farewell to Lady Margaret Thatcher today, it’s hard not to notice that America’s official presence at the state funeral for England’s most significant prime minister since Winston Churchill will be underwhelming. Instead of sending a high-ranking member of his own administration to lead the official delegation, President Obama has dispatched two former Republican secretaries of state, George Shultz and Jim Baker. Nothing against these men, but we can forgive the British for regarding Obama’s choice as yet another snub. Suspicions will only be compounded by the ungracious action in the Senate, where Bob Menendez held up passage

A key component of the bombs used yesterday in the attacks on the Boston Marathon resemble the kind of homemade bomb al Qaeda has encouraged English-speaking terrorists to use. The Daily Beast has confirmed with U.S. counter-terrorism officials that the bombs placed Monday at the marathon were made from pressure cookers, a crude kind of explosive favored by insurgents in Pakistan and Afghanistan. A recipe for a bomb that uses the pressure cooker was part of the debut issue of Inspire, the English-language online magazine of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

Senate Republicans are preparing a substitute to the background check legislation crafted by Sens. Pat Toomey (R., Pa.) and Joe Manchin (D., W.V.), the Washington Free Beacon has learned. The Democrat-controlled Senate is set to begin consideration of the Manchin/Toomey amendment Thursday, but a group of GOP senators has quietly drafted a replacement amendment, titled the “Protecting Communities and Preserving the Second Amendment Act of 2013.” Sens. Chuck Grassley (R., Iowa), Ted Cruz (R., Texas), Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.), John Thune (R., S.D.), Kelly Ayotte (R., N.H.), and John Hoeven (R., N.D.) are sponsoring the bill.

The majority of Americans have now filed their taxes. And the majority of Americans have done so incorrectly. There is one mistake, in particular, that lots of people made: They bought tax-free things online or in another state — and they failed to pay tax on their purchase in their home state. It´s called a use tax. As far as I can tell, accountants and tax lawyers are some of the only people who pay it. Forty-five states have a use tax. About 1.6 percent of the taxpayers in those 45 states actually pay the use tax.

In light of the explosions that have rocked Boston on Patriots’ Day, during the city’s annual marathon, NBC reporter Luke Russert took to Twitter to speculate that today’s horrific events could possibly be related to the 1993 government siege on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas — an incident often attached to conversations about “right-wing terrorism” and anti-government violence. “I was at Fenway Park w my dad and @mikebarnicle during Waco which was on Patriots Day in 1993. Protocol: President Obama declined to send a high-level delegation to Wednesday´s funeral of Britain´s Margaret Thatcher. It´s a measure of how little he values the special relationship — and a sign of his own smallness. Back in more gracious times, vice presidents routinely attended funerals of foreign dignitaries. As such, the presence of Vice President Joe Biden — if not Obama himself — would seem fitting for as significant a U.S. ally as the late Prime Minister Thatcher, if not out of warmth of feeling, then simply to represent the U.S.´ gratitude. As we now move into the official Political Aftermath period of the Boston bombing — the period that will determine the long-term legislative fallout of the atrocity — the dynamics of privilege will undoubtedly influence the nation’s collective reaction to the attacks. That’s because privilege tends to determine: 1) which groups are — and are not — collectively denigrated or targeted for the unlawful actions of individuals; and 2) how big and politically game-changing the overall reaction ends up being.
