“I think Republicans will have to give in much more than they think. He won re-election... "Elections have consequences... The leadership in the Republican Party and the leadership in the conservative movement has to pull back, let people float new ideas. Let’s have a serious debate. Don’t scream and yell when one person says, ´You know what? It won’t kill the country if we raise taxes a little bit on millionaires.´ It really won’t, I don’t think. I don’t really understand why Republicans don’t take Obama’s offer to freeze taxes for everyone below $250,000.
I Swear these people just dont remember what happens when we raise taxes. They never really quit spending. Only real way to force them to have a budget is to refuse to raise the debt limit and not let them borrow anymore money. Or give them a 3month extension with a 75billion debt ceiling increase. 4 x 75 is 300billion in one year. That would be a respectable deficit for the first year of President Obama´s 2nd term. So what if the president threatens to drive us all over the cliff. If we dont agree to blow brains out, he will spend a Trillion or more than we take in forever. We can go over the cliff sooner or later. Sooner means we will owe less money to the Chicoms.
If you raise taxes say 300 billion, then they will raise spending 600 billion and say its and emergency. The only way you would ever agree to a tax increase of any kind is if we had at least a full year of huge spending cuts that really took place. It´s like amnesty. No consideration of any such thing until the border is totally shut down.
Well, Obama´s ploy may succeed, but since you ask, Mr. Kristol, the issue is that the Dems cannot win without splitting the party, and we have to assume they are trying, which provides some insight into the WH insistence that GOP House members break ironclad promises made to the electorate. Then they can be painted as weak, and a third party can lift off and split the GOP, allowing the Dems to take the House in two years. Do Not Disappoint the Base. Stop It. It is a LOSING idea.
Tax the richer people in our country to pay down the deficit???!!! Some economists believe that MAY help in the short term—but will have virtually no effect in the long term. Why is that? It would seem to be a simple mathematical solution?
I believe it is legalized stealing. Of course we are to pay our taxes and support our leaders, but when the policies and programs violate God’s expressed will, we should recognize the programs for what they are—a violation of the 8th Commandment – “You shall not steal.”
So what’s wrong with taking more money from some fat-cat people? They’ve got plenty-----they’ll never miss it. But we ought not to violate our conscience, which should be dictated by Spiritual guidance and biblical principles.
Listen ….. voting for a tax rate on others that we do not vote for ourselves is the same as stealing from our neighbor. It violates God’s law. Asking the state to stick its hands in another’s pockets for our benefit…….. is no better than doing it ourselves.
I still say Massive Voter Fraud and until the Pubbies master the same, they will continue to lose and lose and lose. On the ground, right now, they must Acorn Up for 2016. Sorry folks, but fraud is the only way forward. Oh, and Black trumps all.
The surrender continues at an accelerated pace. Where is it written the loyal opposition has to join in the collective suicide? They own it. It´s happening at a furious pace of regulations and fiats. This was not the normal ebb and flow of politics. Our nation is in the hands of fascists and statists. They do not negotiate. They dictate. Does any rational being think that after a lifetime of Marxist ideaology Obama will suddenly morph into some Mt. Rushmore saint? He wouldn´t lower himself to share a mountain with those he hates. This won´t take long.
Laura Ingraham looked as though she wanted to give Kristol a hearty thrashing. By his words, we know this is the course the RINOs will take. There is nothing left to admire or respect about the current Republican Party. Mitt Romney may not have been perfect in some eyes but I see now the GOP establishment did not deserve him.
Well, maybe not such a bad idea after all. Glenn Reynolds at Instapundit writes about repealing the "Hollywood Tax Cuts". Use Alinsky´s "Rules for Radicals" against them -- make the Dems live up to their own rhetoric. Tax Obama´s "millionaires and billionaires" like Bill Maher, Jon Stewart, John F´ng Kerry, Nancy Pelosi -- target them and see how they will dodge the bullet. Kerry´s income is from tax-free municipal bonds -- make them tax free up to $10M. See what happens -- the Democrats are the wealthy party, not the Republicans.
Tax the wealthy, Obama´s base! Barry has a mandate. Soak the Democrap donor base. Suppress white liberal turnout, suppress the union vote, black, and Latino vote because there will be no job creation. Tax! Tax! Tax! For the sake of the Republic.
Kristol actually said " Don’t scream and yell when one person says, ‘You know what? It won’t kill the country if we raise taxes a little bit on millionaires. " So, what does the right do ? They scream and yell at Kristol. I´m with him. Why should Republicans continue to lose elections defending millionaires who live in blue counties and vote Democrat ? Let´s call Obama´s bluff and raise taxes " a little bit " on millionaires and see what happens. Plus, close tax loopholes and give those earning under a million a tax break. I bet the biggest howls will be from Obama´s Hollywood, NBA and rapper buddies.
Wait until every senior who voted for Obama sees what he has in store for them on 1/1/13! The Medicare part B premiums and deductibles will necessarily skyrocket! How do you think we pay for Obamacare?
How dare Mr. Bill suggest - if he has- that the hiring class should pay higher taxes when 47% of the population pay no income taxes at all?
How about requiring everyone in the country to pay at least $100.00 a yearin income tax and listen to the screams? That would cut down somewhat on the grease spots in the parking lots of video rental stores.
Kristol needs to be reminded that Boehner and more than 218 republicans won seats in the House of Representatives on election day too.
If the GOP feels the need to cave on taxes then how about only raising them for 2 years - to expire one week before the 2014 election. We should have a good idea by then whether these cretins wasted the money or spent it wisely.
Bill Kristol, ´´Caves?´´ ...OK now to raise taxes?
When will unprincipled Rinos EVER stop joining the socialist dems´ urge to reward failure by punishing success? Hard work and personal merit play vital roles to our personal freedom and thus to the USA. The Founders knew this principle, as has every generation of Americans since the country´s founding.
Are the aging but still vocal radicalized activist ´60s & ´70s lefty/lib/statist pols, their perverted lsm/media and unionized academia simply frittering away the next generations´ liberty, strangling the life out of freedom and any hopes of personal achievement & success in the USA? Is the new mantra now to be, ´Don´t be the best that YOU can be?!!´ ...Take a number & wait, ´´unit?´´
We know what, ´´success,´´ has meant and still means in the lives & ´Pursuit of Happiness,´ of most Americans and to this country, the beacon of Liberty on the planet, but now the actual meaning of, ´´success,´´ to the dems & Rinos will surface for all to see through the radical policies they legislate AND regulate next. ...Socialism FAILS every time it is tried! The proof is in the pudding.
let the Dims own it. let them own the economy. Let them raise taxes and own the economy, but do not allow the government to make our children and grandchildren pay for our spending. Put a line in the sand on the national debt.
#12, First of all, Kristol does NOT represent the Republican party. Second, there is a HUGE difference between the parties...the party PRINCIPLES. Politicians in office do not necessarily represent the party either. We just have to stop letting our candidates be chosen for us. And we need to stop voting in the same corrupt, career politicians.
That said, Kristol is an idiot. Why $250K? Such an arbitrary cut off that takes nothing into account. What if it is a chapter S? What if the family is big and has lots of expenses? What if the people live in expensive states like CA, NY, etc.? I am getting sick. I got a raise after 5 years finally and because of taxes, I only see half of it and I certainly don´t make anywhere near $250K!! Any tax increases will affect us lower earners...believe me. It won´t stop at $250k. We already know that.
WASHINGTON — While Washington, D.C. braced Monday evening for the federal government to shut down, Hillary Clinton hosted rich, connected, powerful Democrats at her swanky northwest D.C. home to raise money for Virginia gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe.“Good to see everybody!” McAuliffe said before being driven away from Clinton’s home in a black SUV on Monday night. The Democratic nominee for governor declined to answer questions from The Daily Caller about the Virginians likely to be furloughed in a government shutdown. An estimated 150,000 Virginians are likely to be affected. Despite the shutdown threat, a Who’s Who of national Democrats (and a
President Obama will hold a series of events in the coming days to highlight the consequences of the government shutdown. The events will hammer home the White House’s argument that it is Republicans who are preventing the government from reopening, White House aides say. They will also portray Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) as unwilling to buck a “faction” of the Republican caucus. On Thursday, the president will appear at a local construction company that has benefited from federal loans. While there, he will highlight the real-world consequences of a shutdown, while casting blame for the crisis at the feet of
For a moment Monday night, political reporters seized on the news that Peter King, the gruff blue-collar Long Islander, might emerge as the GOP’s anti-Cruz, a moderate who would rise up against his fellow House Republicans and their effort to tie the continued funding of the government to defunding Obamacare. It proved an extremely fleeting one. “I was the only one who spoke strongly in opposition,” King said in an interview a few minutes before it became clear that his revolt would fail and the government would shut down. The reaction to telling his colleagues that they lived “in their
Johnny Carson made his debut on The Tonight Show 51 years ago. It went on until May ´92 when Carson retired. Along the way, Carson had a way of addressing our political issues with humor and incredible timing. He made politics fun, specially when he would poke fun at both sides with great lines. Do we have someone like that today? I know that Saturday Night Live will do a good intro from time to time. There are other comedians but I just don´t stay up to watch any of them anymore. Dennis Miller on The O´Reilly Factor is great
Tonight House Republicans offered a series of measures to restore funding to the national parks, District of Columbia operations and veterans’ services. But House Democrats voted against all three measures, sending them down to defeat. So the Democrats’ hypocrisy is revealed: they wring their hands over those poor Americans who want to visit the parks, but when they have the opportunity to fund the parks, they turn it down. Of course, the Republicans could have passed these measures without any Democratic votes, but they followed a procedure that required a two-thirds majority, hoping either to pressure Democrats into voting for
In Fresno County, California, some hundreds of workers have walked away from their jobs at Gerawan Farming in protest at the United Farm Workers, a union that the workers have been forced to join by the state of California. The union has attempted to seize some three percent of each worker’s paycheck based on a union vote two decades ago. The union has been completely inactive at Gerawan Farming since it was established. Workers at Gerawan make $10 per hour and receive health benefits. That is significantly higher than industry standard, and the union simply wants employee cash based on
WASHINGTON- A growing number of members of the U.S. Congress said they would give up their pay or donate it to charity during the government shutdown that began Tuesday. Among those saying they will be forgoing a paycheck during the shutdown was Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., the Wisconsin State Journal, Madison, reported. A spokesman for the 2012 GOP vice presidential nominee said he will donate his paycheck to an unspecified charity. "Ryan donates any salary increase provided to members of Congress to charity," spokesman Kevin Seifert wrote in an email. "He plans to do the same during a government shutdown
An estimated 8,000 federal employees in Massachusetts stayed home this morning on unpaid furlough as the first government shutdown in nearly 20 years took effect. The shutdown also shuttered Massachusetts tourist attractions — among them, Minuteman National Park in Concord, the USS Constitution in Charlestown and JFK Library in Dorchester. “Our beaches are closed,” George Price, superintendent of the 44,000-acre Cape Cod National Seashore, told the Herald this morning as he was packing up to go home, leaving a “skeleton staff” of nine park rangers and two maintenance workers to cover six towns and
NEW YORK– The online insurance marketplaces that are at the heart of President Barack Obama’s healthcare overhaul struggled to handle the wave of new consumers Tuesday, the first day of a six-month open enrollment period. A combination of high demand and technical glitches seemed to overwhelm the online system early in the day. Federal and state officials were working to address the problems, which led to long waits on government websites and a federal call center. Speaking Tuesday from the Rose Garden, Obama blamed some of the website slowdown on the fact that more than 1 million people visited Healthcare.gov before
On the day the Obamacare insurance exchanges opened with glitches galore, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin blistered and ridiculed President Barack Obama´s distortions in his Tuesday Rose Garden address to hail his own healthcare law. "I don’t believe America has ever seen such a thing," Palin said of Obama´s speech in which Obama compared Obamacare to the iPhone. In a Facebook post, Palin said Obama "just recorded essentially an infomercial on the disastrous Obamacare rollout" in a speech that was "full of unserious claims and low-level false accusations against those who disagree with his liberal, unworkable policies." "This president engaged in
After serving eleven terms in Congress, Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-AL) announced on Monday he will not seek reelection. “It is time for someone else,” said Bachus. After chairing the powerful House Financial Services Committee for six years, Bachus gave up his chairmanship in 2012 following a Office of Congressional Ethics investigation. In my book, Throw Them All Out, I, along with subsequent reporting by Breitbart News, uncovered evidence of insider trading. 60 Minutes and I partnered together on an investigation that uncovered insider trading by Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Bachus. Congress then passed the Stop Trading On Congressional Knowledge (STOCK)
As the federal government shuts down for the first time in nearly two decades, Republicans have a resonant message to share with the American people. Democrats must now defend subsidies within the Affordable Care Act for their well-compensated staffers, an onerous medical device tax, and the reviled individual mandate. The GOP has robbed the Democrats of a winning issue, the notion that the ACA should not be wholly defunded through a budget process. The problem for the GOP is that they settled on this message late last night when a shutdown had already become unavoidable. For the last week, the
The federal government lost its checkbook at midnight, and it may not find it for days or weeks. As the zero-hour drew closer on Monday, with other avenues exhausted, the White House´s Office of Management and Budget told federal agencies that they ´should now execute plans for an orderly shutdown due to the absence of appropriations.´ House Republican leaders on the Rules Committee had discussed the procedures for both parties to appoint ´conferees´--negotiating representatives--for a joint House-Senate conference committee empowered to hash out a compromise of the budget battle that has consumed Washington for days. The House GOP scrambled all
Today, more than three and a half years after the Democrats passed Obamacare into law, the overhaul’s exchanges — its East German–like government marketplaces — will finally, sort of, open for business. The Democrats fully expect their fellow Americans to be so excited about buying government-approved insurance through these government-run exchanges that they’re choosing to shut down the government rather than delay the individual mandate for a year. Better to shut down the government, it would seem, than let Americans freely decide — even for a year — whether or not to buy Obamacare-based insurance. Alas, the individual mandate’s penalties
First lady Michelle Obama tweeted on Tuesday afternoon that her Twitter account will see fewer updates due to the government shutdown. Due to Congress’s failure to pass legislation to fund the government, updates to this account will be limited. #Shutdown 12:55 PM - 1 Oct 2013. In 2009, FactCheck.org found that the first lady had a staff of 24 people. It is unclear whether any of the first lady’s staff have been furloughed as a result of the government shutdown.
The White House and the Department of the Interior rejected a request from Rep. Steven Palazzo’s office to have World War II veterans visit the World War II memorial in Washington, the Mississippi Republican told The Daily Caller Tuesday. Palazzo helped the veterans commit an act of civil disobedience against the Park Service Tuesday, when the heroes stormed through barricades around the closed memorial. The veterans were visiting the memorial as part of Honor Flight, a non-profit that provides veterans free transport to the nation’s capital to visit the memorials to the wars they fought in. “We got the heads up
“We are five days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America.” — Barack Obama, October 30, 2008 “We are going to have to change our conversation; we’re going to have to change our traditions, our history; we’re going to have to move into a different place as a nation.” — Michelle Obama, May 14, 2008 There certainly is no question that Barack Obama wants to change the United States. And there clearly is no doubt that such fundamental transformation is difficult, given our tripartite system of government — even though Obama entered office with large Democratic majorities in
If President Obama were really clever, he’d jump at the Republicans’ proposal in the continuing resolution to delay Obamacare for one year. A one-year delay is perhaps the only chance to prevent the Obamacare exchanges from becoming a disaster. Don’t take my word for it. Here’s Kevin Counihan, chief executive of Connecticut’s exchange, Access Health CT: “It is highly complex , it’s unprecedented and it’s not going to be smooth…. This is a two- to three-year implementation we’re doing in 10 months. I wish we had one more year.” The problem is that the test runs have revealed the exchange websites aren’t
The Washington region, home to the largest concentration of federal workers and contractors in the nation, could lose an estimated $200?million a day and could see more than 700,000 jobs take a financial hit if the federal government shuts down Monday night, according to a local economist’s projections. And that’s not counting the blow to tourism, one of the region’s economic mainstays, if the Smithsonian museums, the National Zoo, Civil War battlefields and other federally funded attractions are shuttered, said Stephen Fuller, director of George Mason University’s Center for Regional Analysis. “This is serious,” Fuller said. “The national economy may
A group of World War II veterans in an Honor Flight group Tuesday knocked over barriers imposed during the government shutdown at the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C., to get inside. As part of the federal government shutdown, national parks are closed. But the group of veterans continued to the monument Tuesday, as reported by Stars and Stripes.
So far, so good. Just checked the backyard. No pieces of fallen sky yet. Hours into the partial federal government shutdown and it´s difficult to tell there is one. Save for the humorous desperation of TV folks trying to find something, anything that could be labeled calamity and blamed on those political toads in D.C.. So far, the great partial government shutdown of 2013 looks like a full bust. Like that Y2K apocalypse that didn´t happen. Or President Obama´s dire sequester warnings that went Poof! This faux crisis really has little to do with spending.
With a government shutdown just hours away on Monday, White House spokesman Jay Carney said President Obama still plans to go to Asia this weekend. "We don´t have any changes to announce. We plan to make this trip," Carney told reporters at the White House Monday. "The president, as president, looks forward to and believes it is important to travel to Asia in order to promote our economic interests in Asia and our strategic interests in Asia." One of the Republicans´ criticisms of Obama is his absolute refusal to negotiate on a stopgap funding bill and the debt limit, even when he´s
Ronan Farrow’s ol’ blue eyes may say it all. Farrow, long described as the only biological child of actress Mia Farrow and New York filmmaker Woody Allen, may actually be the son of Frank Sinatra, his mom acknowledged in a bombshell report Wednesday. While Hollywood has whispered about the prospect for years, it was the first time that Mia publicly admitted the possibility. Asked point-blank by Vanity Fair about Sinatra’s possible parentage of Ronan, Mia coyly replied: “Possibly.” The “Rosemary’s Baby’’ actress was married to Ol’ Blue Eyes from 1966 to 1968 but continued to be his lover on and off afterward — including
After Senator Elizabeth Warren spoke at a luncheon in Beverly Hills, Calif., last month, women from the audience swarmed around her, many of them asking the same question: will you run for president? (Snip) Ms. Warren, a Massachusetts Democrat, said in an interview that she was not interested in seeking the presidency. And despite talk of a draft movement among some activists, it is difficult to imagine her taking on former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. But in seizing on issues animating her party’s base — the influence of big banks, soaring student loan debt and the widening gulf
