Essential public services in NY and NJ never struck me as ineffective. They seemed very expensive but that is not the same as ineffective.

I´ll wait and hope for sober assessments next year. Perhaps the damage was just too much.

And they will continue to struggle. Especially when doctors start eliminating medicare patients and when doctors themselves leave the practice and go into another line of work and we end up with a shortage of doctors.
Also if you are discharged from a hospital and have to be be re admitted within `30 days, medicare will not pay and the hospital will be charged. That´ not going to fly. Hospitals can´t afford to pick up all the cost.

Just consider this a preview of the care the elderly will receive under obamacare.

Let me put it this way. If you haven´t called Obama for help, you can just stick your whining about impossible conditions in the aftermath of Sandy. Especially conditions as pertains to "society´s most vulnerable people - the elderly, the disabled and the chronically ill". Everywhere there´s problems that´s all I hear being affected. You can get back to me when you get ahold of him. Before that, don´t bother me with your sad-sack tales. Obama is supposed to be your savior. That´s why you voted for him. He´ll fix your problems and your wagon too.

Last I heard he was at Andrews AFB playing golf. Try to catch him there or maybe he´s home at the White House by now. Fortunately, you have four years to catch up with him at that location.

It has to be very difficult for people with babies and for the elderly, but the headline is correct. It must be tremendously hard for the sick and frail to cope during this time when it must appear to them that they are being totally ignored.

We endured eight days without power, meaning no heat, no hot water, no lights, no refrigerator and no cooking. At night, the house got down to about 46 degrees. Then the nor´easter hit, leaving eight inches of heavy wet snow and taking down many more trees. Many of my townspeople still don´t have power, since Oct. 29th. It is very difficult to get gasoline, so most people are stuck in their cold homes. Calls to LIPA are answered by a machine, and it is impossible to reach a human being. The local power authority, LIPA, has only about 500 maintenance workers. We were so grateful to the crew from Amarillo, Texas, that removed huge downed trees from the power lines and got our power back on.

Andrew Cuomo rails at LIPA (Long Island Power Authority) and Con Edison, but seems unable or unwilling to do anything but hold press conferences where he complains that they are inept (Andrew, LIPA is a state authority--surely the governor can do SOMETHING).

There is tremendous anger at the inept power company and ineffective state leadership, especially in light of the huge costs entailed in living in the area, as #2 mentions.

We all know people whose homes are either gone (demolished or swept away) or uninhabitable. Compared to those poor souls, we all feel lucky to be freezing in the dark with a roof over our heads.

NJ Gov put up a Tent City in Monmouth Park.

Elderly disdabled people in tents in the bitter cold. And there they remained even during the follow on storm.

But then the big worry was all about the amusement park rides that fell into the ocean.

Storm victims were treated like dirt. By the Governor, and the utility companies all across the NY/NJ metro area.

If those sick & frail voted for Barry, then they have nothing to complain about. They can enjoy the Death Bill earlier than the rest of us.

My heart goes out to you, Charactercounts. I have friends on Seagirt Blvd. who lost everything. They tell us everybody´s pretty much on their own. Family, friends & neighbors helping each other out, FEMA et al useless. People can´t find them. They say the local sanitation people have been fabulous, really trying to help people get rid of the detritus, helping people drag out water-soaked mattresses & trying to take away the thousands & thousands of sad trash bags & debris people are putting out. Praying for your power to come on, safely and soon.
