The collapse of the dazzling career of CIA Director David H. Petraeus was triggered when a woman with whom he was having an affair sent threatening e-mails to another woman close to him, according to three senior law enforcement officials with knowledge of the episode. The recipient of the e-mails was so frightened that she went to the FBI for protection and help tracking down the sender, according to the officials. The FBI investigation traced the threats to Paula Broadwell, a former military officer and a Petraeus biographer, and uncovered explicit e-mails between Broadwell and Petraeus, Headline corrected by Staff
Comments: Fatal Attraction Part II. Did she boil any rabbits?
Please do not place line breaks in hyphenated words
The frightening emails may not have even mentioned the general. It seems quite logical that the recipient went to the FBI. The FBI investigation began with Broadwell and spread to Petraeus, not the other way around.
I had a funny feeling jealousy was part of this, then I wondered why a woman would be jealous over general P who´s as mundane a character as you can get.But you know, jealousy leads to all kinds of phobias about the other person.
If you halfway follow this woman´s career, you´d think she´s a rock solid conservative as you can get. But her obsession with being the best, took on another characteristic of OCD when it came to the general.
This whole episode is really a shame, especially for the spouses involved.
I was saying to myself the other day that nothing surprises me anymore with Obama being president but I wasn´t expecting something like this.
The Drudgereport reads like a supermarket smear tabloid of 20 years ago but all the stuff is true now.How about a mailman walking around a dead body like nothings funny going on? A woman smothering her baby with a Koran. She´ll probably get off on a postpartum depression plea.
I remember the first comments about Benghazi .....he tied the attack to the video ......I thought that doesn´t sound right...I was surprised......a military general thinking that´s the explanation ......also are we to believe that the President was not informed at any time that the chief of the intelligence agency was having issues.....serious issues.....Good Lord !....this is crazy.......the timing is not to be believed..........
General Petraeus please come forward and set the story straight......we are waiting........
She was eye candy, twenty years younger than the General, and he abandoned all reason. Didn´t matter to him that this woman turned out to be a fruit bat, since he was gettin´ some.
This may have been somewhat of a setup, but I really don´t feel sorry for the parties involved. These honey trap situations have played out this way thoughout history, and there are still dumb schlubs who get stuck.
I almost have sympathy for these middle aged men. It doesn´t matter their IQ their brain seems to undergo a certain psychosis at certain ages. A government study should be done. I´ll bet they would note changes in certain areas of their brains that are visible on MRI´s.
Maybe there could be a vaccine or shot of some kind [not fatal but appropriately aimed?] They probably have broken their family´s hearts.
Power is a huge aphrodisiac. She was after Petraeus the minute she met him at a conference in 2006 and kept emailing him and pursuing contact with him for 5 years. Then she got to Afghanistan in 2011 to write her book and he lost all control of his life. How you get a setup by Obama, Hillary, Axelrod, Jarrett and whoever else out of that scenario is beyond all reason. This is no more nor less than the flattered 50+ year old man making a fool of himself and the younger sexy bimbo after power, an age-old story. Don´t have sympathy for either of them.
Reminds me of the nutty astronaut with the diapers, too. Wasn´t she, too, an overachieving graduate of the service academies? And about the same age? Must be some hothouse atmosphere in those service academies. This is what they turn out. Throw that Navy lesbian captain who was so vicious to her men she was relieved of command (and showed up to meetings in bedroom slippers too) and it´s quite a picture.
The law enforcement officials did not provide an exact timeline for the investigation, but they said that the inquiry started at least several weeks ago... (That´s open-ended.)
It was not until Tuesday that the Justice Department notified James Clapper, the director of national intelligence, that compromising material about Petraeus had been uncovered as part of an investigation, according to a senior intelligence official. Clapper then spoke with Petraeus and told him to resign.
“Director Clapper learned of the situation from the FBI on Tuesday evening around 5 p.m.,”.. (The Justice Department works for who? And what was so special about 5 p.m. Tuesday evening? Something about Tuesday, can´t quite place it...)
Well, I have a conspiracy theory for you. Perhaps the investigation started when Petraeus testified, honestly, and was contrary to the White House statements on Bengazhi. The WH could have had somebody pass the word to Petraeus that he better follow the correct line or his affair would be revealed. That is blackmail, folks, but Petraeus out witted them by revealing the affair himself. I believe he will testify truthfully if subpeoned[sp] We will see. Obama lavished the praise on Petraeus as he accepted the resignation, but I don´t believe Petraeus was charmed by it.
#21 . . . Ditto Petraeus is just the latest General to have had an affair. Eisenhower had a well known affair with his driver during WW2 with Kay Sommersby.
General Eisenhower went on to be The President after the war. I guess the media didn´t feel the need to destroy lives back then, like they do today, except for our current president´s crimes and misdemeanors.
This had to be known almost from the start. He has too many people around him at all times for it not to have leaked out.
Until I know more from the two people themselves I am going to assume it just happened. They were a long way away from their spouses when in Afghanistan. He was sharing his life´s story with her. It´s not exactly the place where you have a great social life after office hours.
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- The victim of a vicious knockout attack in New Jersey is speaking out for the first time. He was cold-cocked, and hit not just with a fist, but with a glove with hard plastic knuckles. Two of the four attackers are still on the run. "All of a sudden, I was trying to watch my back and these two came around front and punches my face," the victim said. The 36-year-old restaurant worker does not want his name or face on television, and who could blame him? He still has headaches from a concussion and six
Sears stock plummeted Wednesday as news came out that Edward Lampert, its stubborn billionaire chairman and CEO, had to surrender majority control of the 120-year-old big box retailer when investors in Lampert’s hedge fund pulled money out. With no end in sight for Lampert’s quixotic turnaround efforts, it’s time to question whether there’s any way to save Sears as long as he remains in charge. (Snip) Lampert began at Sears with the ill-fated $12 billion merger with Kmart in 2005. Sales have declined for 27 straight quarters and the company’s stock is down over 70% from its high in 2007.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has no system in place to prevent fraud when individuals apply for tax credits under Obamacare, according to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA). The IG said in an audit released Tuesday that the IRS has no plan to manage, monitor, or mitigate fraud risk when processing premium tax credits available under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). “The ACA Program has not yet completed a fraud mitigation strategy,” the audit found. “It is important for the IRS to thoroughly consider fraud threats and risks that could impact new ACA systems.” Politico reports: The
Around 100,000 Americans successfully signed up for health insurance in November through the troubled federal online marketplace, HealthCare.gov, a person familiar with the preliminary data confirmed to ABC News. The figure reflects a surge in enrollment as software and hardware fixes to the site were made over the course of the month. In October, only 26,000 people could successfully enroll in Obamacare plans, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. "We´ve been working 24/7 to make improvements, and more consumers are successfully shopping online and enrolling in a health plan each week," Health and Human Services Secretary
NEW HAVEN >> The jail cell death last weekend of Yale University professor Samuel See, known as a brilliant writer and rising star in academia, has shaken up the tight-knit college community. Now adding to the mystery of his unexpected death are apparent connections between the online profiles of See and several escort service websites that include a cache of sexually explicit photos. At least four websites advertising male escort services included a phone number connected to See. The website Ryan Cochran Escort Services includes the same phone number listed on an order of protection filed against See in September.
For many Ann Arborites, Thanksgiving is a day devoted to giving thanks, spending time with family, eating turkey and watching the Detroit Lions. This year, retail giants want that to change. (Snip) The early openings change the game for retail giants looking to boost profits through aggressive holiday sales. It also means millions of retail employees in the U.S. are working on the holiday, and it poses the question to consumers: Is a bargain on a 70-inch television or an Apple iPad worth ditching Thanksgiving dinner? “You couldn’t pay me to stand in a line in the cold on Thanksgiving
Macy´s Inc and a slew of other U.S. retailers are opening on Thanksgiving for the first time ever in a bare-knuckled brawl for a bigger slice of overall holiday sales. But it might not be so easy to lure most Americans from their turkey and football - particularly if the weather is foul. Department store rivals Kohl´s Corp and J.C. Penney Co Inc led a string of Thanksgiving opening announcements after Macy´s said it would open its U.S. stores on the popular holiday, ending a 155-year tradition. Sales trends, survey results and an online "Save Thanksgiving" backlash suggest that shoppers
The captain of a Greenpeace ship released on bail after two months of detention in a Russian prison following an Arctic protest said he and his fellow activists remain in shock at their treatment. American Peter Willcox, who was also in charge of Greenpeace’s Rainbow Warrior when it was sunk in Auckland in 1985 by a bomb planted by the French intelligence service, said the organization again found itself in the crosshairs of a government bent on throttling the environmental group. “There is a similarity between the two cases,” with both the French and Russian governments targeting Greenpeace to prevent
DENVER - 9Wants to Know has learned federal investigators believe Colombian drug cartels have taken root within Colorado´s medical marijuana industry. On Thursday, federal agents from the Drug Enforcement Agency and Internal Revenue Service executed search warrants on several medical marijuana shops in Denver and Boulder. One of those shops is VIP Cannabis, a shop near Federal Boulevard and Alameda Avenue. Numerous calls into VIP Cannabis by 9Wants to Know have not been returned. While the warrants and other documents relating to the investigation are under court-ordered seal, sources spoke on the condition of anonymity to 9Wants to Know.
Minorities continue to offer a bulwark of support for the Affordable Care Act, according to the latest United Technologies/National Journal Congressional Connection Poll. But the deepening discrepancy between their views of Obamacare and their support for President Obama´s reelection last year shows skepticism about whether the big social-welfare program has worked touched even the White House´s most ardent supporters. A battery of questions about who benefits from the health care law, whether it should be repealed, and what´s to blame for its rocky rollout all reveal a portion of the electorate that´s far more favorable to the sweeping reform than
WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama´s signature health law has helped spur stronger economic growth by contributing to slower increases in healthcare prices and spending, the White House said on Wednesday. The White House´s assertion of the economic benefits of the law commonly called Obamacare runs counter to the views of many critics, who say it is raising insurance premiums and chilling job creation. (Snip) "The government´s non-partisan actuaries report this is the result of the terrible economy under President Obama, not his health care law," Boehner press secretary Brendan Buck said in an email.
The Obama administration has not always been great at selling its agenda, but the president´s adoption of the right-wing slur "Obamacare" as a prideful new name for the Affordable Care Act has been a notable exception. We often think the proper response to being called a dirty name is to object. That´s a good first step, but in the long term, the judo approach is constructive -- hurl the power being used against you back to your opponent. For example, in 1968 William F. Buckley could offend Gore Vidal by calling him a "queer" on television. Today, the line would
The question all week long was this: Who are you going to believe, an illegal alien or the president of the United States of America? Obviously, if it’s a president who once went by an alias, Barry Soetoro, you go with Uncle Omar, 100 percent, no questions asked. And so it was that the White House finally admitted to another, uh, misstatement — despite previous denials, Barack/Barry did sleep on his beloved Uncle Omar’s couch in Cambridge when he first moved here to attend Harvard Law School (speaking of which, we’re still waiting to see the president’s grades and his LSAT scores). But the
How do you get your arms around the catastrophe known as Obamacare? Is it even possible? At this point, I’m not sure it is. The list of individual disasters which threaten to ruin one-sixth of the U.S. economy and what has been, up until now, the best healthcare system in the world is exhaustive, and exhausting. The examples I will identify here barely scratch the surface. First but by no means foremost, we have the supposedly new and improved HealthCare.gov. Except it’s not, even the visible part. Stories still abound of people still failing to get in or to get through the enrollment
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a new five-year strategic plan to improve safety for elderly drivers and passengers. Although they are statistically among the safest on the road, the number of older drivers is increasing dramatically — and with it, that group´s numbers of injuries and deaths. Since 2003, the population of older adults, defined as age 65 and older, has increased by 20% and the number of licensed older drivers increased by 21% to 35 million in 2012, according to NHTSA. Last year, NHTSA reported that 5,560 people older than 65 died and 214,000 were injured
A veteran Washington adviser who has worked for four Presidents on both sides of the political aisle said that the stunning Government Accountability Report report that found President Barack Obama has not had a one-on-one meeting with Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius since the passage of Obamacare over three years ago is an indictment of the entire White House operation and shows that the Obama administration has bordered on "malfeasance." "I have no doubt the White House is right, that Secretary Sebelius was in several group meetings with the president about health care," Gergen caveated, "but the whole
President Barack Obama’s Facebook page on Saturday posted a message honoring the dead from Pearl Harbor—accompanied by a picture of Obama descending the stairs next to the Pearl Harbor Memorial. The picture barely fits the name of the Arizona Memorial so it can frame Obama in the foreground. The post´s statement reads: Today, with solemn pride and reverence, let us remember those who fought and died at Pearl Harbor, acknowledge everyone who carried their legacy forward, and reaffirm our commitment to upholding the ideals for which they served. President Obama The Obama Administration´s current shipbuilding plan shrinks the size of
Barack Obama did not tell the whole story this autumn when he tried to make the case that Bashar al-Assad was responsible for the chemical weapons attack near Damascus on 21 August. In some instances, he omitted important intelligence, and in others he presented assumptions as facts. Most significant, he failed to acknowledge something known to the US intelligence community: that the Syrian army is not the only party in the country’s civil war with access to sarin, the nerve agent that a UN study concluded – without assessing responsibility – had been used in the rocket attack. In the months before the attack,
Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, the hapless, goalpost-shifting so-called "architect" of Obamacare, told Fox News´ Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday that President Barack Obama´s promise "if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor" was absolutely true--with one important caveat: if you like your doctor, "you can pay for it." Wallace grilled Dr. Emanuel, challenging his false claims that California´s enrollment was keeping pace with the percentage of the young population necessary to keep the system afloat, and pointing out that the president´s promise on doctors would collapse once people lost their insurance or their
Just how much do many Hollywood liberals hate conservatives? In an interview with Playboy, Ben Affleck said, "When I watch a guy [on film] I know is a big Republican, part of me thinks, I probably wouldn’t like this person if I met him": PLAYBOY: You developed a political profile campaigning for presidential candidates Al Gore, John Kerry and Barack Obama. How did that come about? AFFLECK: I grew up in a house with a mother who was a teacher and a Freedom Rider—very left-wing Democrats living in a heterogeneous working-class neighborhood. I picked up a lot of those values there, and I
The U.S. isn´t called "America the Beautiful" for nothing. Each year, millions of tourists come from home and abroad to see the country´s majestic landscape and iconic sites, from the Grand Canyon to the Statue of Liberty. But there are also cool, quirky attractions, like Vermont´s Ben & Jerry´s Factory and Tennessee´s Graceland, the former home of Rock and Roll King Elvis Presley. From California to New York and everywhere in between, the country is chock-full of incredible attractions that keep luring in visitors. Here are the best tourist attractions in every state.
MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry opened her program over the weekend with a commentary about the Affordable Care Act’s colloquial moniker: “Obamacare.” She said that the word was originally created as a “derogatory term,” designed by white men as a way to delegitimize President Barack Obama and his achievement. However, she said that the term will soon be synonymous with all of Obama’s accomplishments and she urged her audience to use the term with pride. “I want to talk today about a controversial word. It’s a word that has been with us for years, and like it or not, it’s indelibly
Call me Grinch, call me Scrooge. Call me Lord Voldemort of the Yuletide. None could be worse than sending me a holiday card with glossy photographs of your lovely, smiling family. My wife, Emily, and I place your cards like trophies on our shelves, continuing an old-school practice that began about 175 years ago as a way of maintaining relationships as families and friends moved far and wide. Today’s cards may appear more personalized — with photos of spouses, kids and pets, and distribution lists much smaller than a sprawling collection of Facebook friends. But when I flip over the photo
Chris Matthews is crazy. Nevertheless, when left-wingers talk openly with one another, their craziness can be revealing. That is the case, I think, with this remarkable MSNBC clip. Matthews, fresh from his kneepad interview with President Obama, praises what he terms a uniquely brilliant insight by Al Sharpton: South Africa’s white politicians of the apartheid era were more patriotic than today’s Republicans: I haven’t heard anything as smart as what I heard Reverend Sharpton say a moment go in five years. The difference between the way F.W. de Klerk handled the need for change and the election – democratic election
