A man beaten on Nov. 2 succumbed to his injuries on Friday making him the 58th homicide victim in Camden. The death matches the record number of homicides in the city set in 1995. Gregory Holder, 45 of Cherry Hill died Friday at about 12:30 p.m. (Snip) As in 1995 the roster of homicide victims is broad. This year´s victims include a college student who hoped to escape Camden; a peacemaker who tried to squash a dispute; a Vietnam Veteran who was a former substitute teacher, and, in quick succession, two young children. You have to wonder sometimes if one of the multitude of “special advisors” to Barack Obama has a George Orwell fetish. All of us have read hundreds of blog articles and thousands of comments made in passing by co-workers, family, friends and the occasional total stranger that allude to the Obama administration and it’s resemblance to George Orwell’s seminal work, 1984. There have even been references to Orwell’s 1984 in columns published in the normally slavishly supportive main stream media, which are always easy to identify since the White House normally describes them as “hit pieces.” Orwellian descriptions of totalitarianism

This week the indictment and arrests of leading San Francisco and California Democrat politicians follows a long string of corruption cases involving prominent Democrats. It brings to mind the ridiculous charges by Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi (echoing Howard Dean) that the Republicans were responsible for a “culture of corruption” and that she, a woman, was going to sweep the Congress clean of it. Included in her litany of things charged as corrupt was the Medicare Prescription Drug Bill which she attacked in a press release and privileged resolution on December 8, 2005: Across the country, seniors are trying to navigate the

The transition from college to adult life is treacherous, and this is nowhere more visible than among new college graduates in their first real jobs. A few years ago, I took it upon myself to start writing tips for the young staff where I work about how to avoid doing things that would make their supervisors write them off. It began as a lark as I wrote tips with titles such as, "Excise the word ´like´ from your spoken English." But eventually, I found myself getting into the deeper waters of how to go about living a good life. At that point, I had to deal with a reality: When it comes to a life filled with deep and lasting satisfactions, most of the clichés are

President Barack Obama hits Chicago on Wednesday for two jumbo priced fundraisers to benefit the Democratic National Committee. Obama hosts a roundtable—I am told keyed towards business executives—at the Chicago Cut Steakhouse downtown where about 25 folks are expected; the tab is up to $32,400. The Obama roundtable is hosted by Mesirow Financial Chairman and CEO Richard Price. Later, Obama is the headliner at a dinner for about 55—donating up to $10,000--at the Lincoln Park home of Craig Freedman and Grace Tsao-Wu, who is an Obama major donor and fund-raiser. Here is a seeming paradox of American life. One the one hand, there is a broad social-science correlation between religious faith and various social goods — health and happiness, upward mobility, social trust, charitable work and civic participation. Yet at the same time, some of the most religious areas of the country — the Bible Belt, the deepest South — struggle mightily with poverty, poor health, political corruption and social disarray. Part of this paradox can be resolved by looking at nonreligious variables like race. But part of it reflects an important fact about religion in America: The social goods

Boston firefighters gathered Thursday at Logan Airport to meet the family of a fallen comrade in an emotional show of respect and gratitude. He was one of two firefighters who died earlier in the week while trying to tame a blaze in the city’s Back Bay neighborhood. The picture was taken by Max Widmer as he waited to board his plane and the firemen waited for the JetBlue flight that carried her to Beantown free of charge, according to WCVB.

After a disastrous presidential campaign in 2012, can Texas Governor Rick Perry mount a credible bid for the White House in 2016? Texas Governor Rick Perry is currently on a media tour touting the theme that America is a great place for second chances, specifically second chances for Texas governors with national ambitions. Perry is trying to erase the memory of his disastrous 2012 GOP presidential campaign which included “brain-farts” and “oops” debate moments with his folksy, charming, and uniquely American manner. Curious about Perry’s comeback strategy, I asked Texan and GOP presidential media guru, Mark McKinnon and he said,

As part of its plan to reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, the Obama administration is targeting the dairy industry to reduce methane emissions in their operations. This comes despite falling methane emission levels across the economy since 1990. The White House has proposed cutting methane emissions from the dairy industry by 25 percent by 2020. Although U.S. agriculture only accounts for about 9 percent of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, it makes up a sizeable portion of methane emissions — which is a very potent greenhouse gas. Some of these methane emissions come from

A startling rift appeared Tuesday on the Supreme Court as the three female Justices came out swinging like Brunnhildes — women warriors — for what they erroneously labeled an “entitlement” to employer-provided contraceptives and morning-after pills. The Justices were hearing oral arguments in Sebelius v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc., a case hyped by the Democratic Party as a test for women’s rights. Justices Kagan, Ginsberg, and Sotomayor sprang on Hobby Lobby’s attorney , interrupting his every sentence and pummeling him with questions taken right out of the Democratic Party’s “war on women” playbook. If Betsey McCaughey is correct (and I bet she is, because she has not only read the entire ObamaCare bill, she has written a book about it), Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan publicly humiliated herself during the oral arguments on the Hobby Lobby case, revealing that she either did not read the law, or failed to comprehend it if she did so. Writing in the New York Sun, McCaughey lays out what is wrong with the Justice’s declaration about Obamacare: she asserted that the statute itself mandates provision of birth control. Not one word in the Affordable Care Act guarantees health plans will cover birth control products.
