Gen. David Petraeus let down his country as well as his family

| As brilliant as he was as a military strategist and commander, David Petraeus proved to harbor an equally outsized streak of reckless irresponsibility as America’s chief spy. The former general who devised the successful Iraq war surge and then took on the Afghanistan mission was duty-bound to resign as Central Intelligence Agency director after being caught in an extramarital affair. Petraeus showed neither the discretion nor the good judgment that are among the fundamental character traits necessary for service at the heights of the U.S. national security system. We’ve all seen the story in the movies: Top spy gets caught in sack
|
Comments: Anyone else believe the administration´s knowledge of the affair could have been used to pressure Petraeus to reinforce the ridiculous video story in his testimony?

Maybe Petraeus is the superior strategist after all. Let´s see how this plays out.

I probably agree with most of the recriminations in this story about personal behavior etc. but we have a president who is actually guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors getting a free pass.
When JFK might have been involved with a Russian spy, people under him we´re worried to death about the supposed woman´s ability to blackmail him.Can anybody find one person that would condemn JFK for his whole slew of cheating with women? Oh,that´s just the way it was with the Kennedy´s,nothing to see here. Now we have a holier than thou writer for this paper ready to equate Petraeus´s sins with Chairman Mao killing millions of people.
The point is the double standards when it comes to liberal´s convenience. It´s just a coincidence that Obama will get away with his Benghazi lies now.

I do not condone infidelity on the part of anyone--but there´s a huge "BUT" here. The general admits to an inappropriate relationship with his biographer, yes. But what are the details? There´s a scale involved here and this relationship is not on the same scale as a young and vulnerable intern in the anteroom to the Oval Office while Arafat waits for his appointment with Bill Clinton and which would have continued had the affair not been discovered. Look at the photo of Ms. Broadstreet in this article:
http://tinyurl.com/bx92ftb
then ask yourself which one was the more vulnerable in this particular fling. Yes, I know Petraeus should have known better and I wouldn´t be terribly pleased if my husband was involved in an affair. In fact, I divorced a husband for that very reason. But you have to look at the circumstances to determine the amount of guilt involved.
In my ex´s case there was no guilt, only a shrugging of the shoulders and he would have carried on if I hadn´t accidentally found out. Like Clinton, he was a good liar and, as it turned out, a serial adulterer. But is the same true of Petraeus? Was this affair a one-time mistake, ending quickly but still causing a large amount of guilt for Petraeus or was he a serial adulterer who would have continued on his merry way had he not been found out?
And when exactly did this affair take place? Before or after he was appointed to the CIA?
We definitely need to know a lot more before judging this man who, unlike a couple of Commanders-in-Chief we know, has performed sterling military service for this country.

How long did this investigation go on? And, if the fbi had serious concerns about him, why was he left in charge of the cia? I think obama´s master has people placed in important places to serve its(not sure if the master is man or woman)desires and NOT to serve and protect the USA. The voters certainly are getting what they deserve by choosing such a (adjectives fail me)man for potus.

Before you stone the good General look where Obama has got us to.
Gays in the military is just fine.
However, you want to beat up on straights who find a girl friend while overseas.
Good grief people, the military has been doing this for centuries. Going "native" is nothing new. Just look at the tons of military who come home with overseas brides. The married guys were smart enough to come home alone and the wives back home knew it.
In the General´s case he had his own Monica under the desk (read other story).
He may have been set up by Axelrod and Co before he even got hired for the job.

Lest you forget, Obama-Mao is a malignant narcissist who has some very serious skills when it comes to "manipulating" people for his needs. Princeton Petraeus has a frumpy wifey of 37 years, whether you like that description or not. The "other" woman´s picture suggests the exact opposite of such a perspective...perfect weapon to use by a malignant narcissist...

I can´t defend Patraeus being unfaithful but don´t buy into the argument that this eminently qualified leader should have stepped down. What would be the result of waving a magic wand over the House and Senate chambers today and make disappear all those who´ve been unfaithful. I suspect many, many seats would be empty. And I suspect that those remaining would represent a Republican majority in both houses.

1. Petraeus should have been smart enough to not have an affair. He´s in a position where it´s a terrible risk and he did it anyway, even incriminating himself through e-mails.
2. The FBI was investigating the woman for attempting to get into the general´s e-mails. What´s that about? Did she do that?
3. No mention of this incident should sit there without demand for justice for the Benghazi 4. This thing seriously impedes achieving that, and someone has to make noise about it.

There´s a reason why people in positions of power should NEVER be left alone in a room with a member of the opposite sex, especially attractive ones. The fact he was writing a bio of himself indicates a bit of hubris had developed within him.

History and Scripture are replete with cases like this one. We´re all programmed with this vulnerability, which too often overrides our cerebral cortex. It´s part of our survival mechanism as a species, and a humiliating force when it takes hold. David Petraeus is human. We´re all sinners. Those who deny it are - liars.

Via Fox Nation, newly released statistics show that illegal immigrant infiltration along the U.S.-Mexico border is increasing markedly despite recent statements to the contrary by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano: “I can tell you having worked that border for 20 years, it is more secure now than it has ever been. Illegal apprehensions are at 40-year lows,” Napolitano told reporters this week in Houston. But figures released Thursday by Customs and Border Protection to Fox News tell a different story. The White House press corps should ask President Obama this question: You’ve told Iran’s leaders that if they come close to marrying a nuclear warhead with a missile that can hit the United States or our allies, they should expect a U.S. military attack on their soil. (Snip)Administration officials would never admit it, but the main reason for their being tougher on Iran than North Korea seems tied to American domestic politics as much or more than anything else, specifically the standing of Israel and oil versus Korea and Japan.

AS a Texas-raised journalist, I can tell you two things with confidence about my native state. One, its economy has been humming nicely for years. Two, this appears to greatly offend a certain breed of Northern writer, several of whom have descended on the state in an attempt to rebut stories of a “Texas miracle.” (Snip) “Texas has a long tradition of looking outside the government for support — and often finding it. That predates the Texas revolution and was reinforced by the rise of the cattle kingdom and the oil booms.”

La Jolla´s jagged coastline is strictly protected by environmental laws to ensure the San Diego community remains the kind of seaside jewel that has attracted swanky restaurants, top-flight hotels and some of the nation´s rich and famous, including billionaire businessman Irwin Jacobs and former presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Tourists flock to the place. So do birds. Lots of birds. And with those birds comes lots of poop. So rather than gasping in amazement at the beautiful views, some are holding their noses from the stench coming from the droppings that cake coastal rocks and outcroppings near its business district.

Obama, Kerry and Hagel thought that they had a plan for putting North Korea back in the box. North Korea had conducted a nuclear test in February, violating once again the various understandings that had been worked out. But agreements and understandings, written or oral, had never meant much to the repressive regime which had suspended the Armistice Agreement that ended the Korean War numerous times—including last month. So Obama decided to wave a stick. The playbook for North Korea would feature flights by B-2 and B-52 bombers and F-22 fighter jets to remind

The quasi-official ideology of the U.S. armed forces holds that generals are virtually interchangeable, that individual personalities don’t matter much, that ordinary grunts are in any case more important than their leaders, and that what really counts are larger systems that make a complex bureaucracy function. There is some truth to all of this. But for all of the bureaucratic heft of the services and the heroism of ordinary soldiers, it is hard to imagine the Civil War having been won without Grant, Sherman, and Sheridan—or World War II without Marshall, Eisenhower, Patton, Bradley, Arnold, LeMay, Nimitz, Halsey,

On weekends, he left town for his job as an instructor at a flight school, residing in Grapevine with his second wife, Leslie Gardea, who traveled during the week. To keep the women from finding out about each other, he created fake divorce documents on the Internet and filed his first wife´s taxes, marking her as single without her knowledge. The Supreme Court could soon end one of the federal government´s most archaic practices. Since the 1930s, the Agriculture Department has turned California raisin growers into pawns of its Raisin Administrative Committee, which can commandeer up to half of the farmer´s crop and then pay them little or nothing for the product. Marvin Horne, a 67-year-old raisin farmer in Fresno, Calif., was fined almost $700,000 for refusing to surrender control of much of his harvest to the government committee in 2002. President Obama´s biggest gaffe yesterday when speaking of California Attorney General Kamala Harris was not in flirtatiously complimenting her as "the best-looking attorney general," but in introducing an observation from the system of beauty into a forum that was about the system of power. What´s that, you say? Irin Carmon does a great job in Salon in laying out the bounds of propriety for when it´s appropriate to talk about a woman´s looks as a general matter. But I´ve long felt we lack a solid theoretical underpinning for easily discussing these issues, and why precisely it is that

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”

Put out an all-points bulletin: Millions of Americans have gone missing from the workforce. Every month that those would-be workers are gone raises the odds that they might never come back, dimming the prospects for future economic growth. But then came Friday’s jobs report, and hopes were dashed. The Labor Department reported that the U.S. labor force — everyone who has a job or is looking for one — shrank

Gluten-free diets are all the rage, but they can be dangerous if not done right. What is gluten? It´s the spongy complex of proteins, found naturally in wheat, rye, and barley, that gives elasticity to dough and allows it to rise. When flour is moistened and either kneaded or mixed into dough, gluten molecules form an elastic, microscopic latticework that traps the carbon dioxide produced when yeast ferments, causing dough to inflate like a hot air balloon. Baking hardens the gluten, which helps the finished product keep its shape. Wheat — and gluten — is ubiquitous in the American diet.
