Athena the first winter

The snowstorm that hit the area Wednesday was a first. Not the first winter storm, but the first to be christened with a name. The Weather Channel called it Athena. Used to be only hurricanes, or tropical storms, were given names. And it was that way for hundreds of years. (Snip) The National Weather Service posted on its website that “TWC has named the nor'easter ‘Athena.’ The NWS does not name winter storms in our products. Please refrain from using the term Athena in any of our products.” Brian Edwards, a meteorologist for Accuweather.com, said his agency has considered

...those names can be catchy and also be helpful warnings.

In that case 'Alinsky' would be more appropriate.

"Athena" was not a storm.
It was the inevitable result of a vacuum. After the absolute lack of exhibited on Tuesday, Athena, greek goddess of WISDOM blew in, dumped her load and left, knowing it was too late.

And now, soon we will have a visit from Ares.

God have mercy on us all.

And now a storm is a product? Not to mention different weather sources now in a pizzing contest?

Athena is said to come to the aid of heroes and is sometimes called their best friend.

First the Greek columns, now Athena, next the Greek (economic) tragedy at the hands of their hero.

Bloomberg Businessweek, by John Tozzi    Original Article

Health insurance companies are spending the last week of the year searching for orphans and ghosts—the people who tried to buy health plans through healthcare.gov but have had their files mixed up or lost en route from the government website to the insurance company’s database. The insurance companies dub “orphans” the people who selected a health plan on healthcare.gov but whose enrollment never got transmitted. “Ghosts” are the opposite: Customers whom insurers have counted as enrolled but aren’t on the government’s list of people who chose that plan—perhaps because they cancelled their plans or switched to a

Some people did not like my recent article about Phil Robertson, star of "Duck Dynasty." In the article, I noted problems with Robertson´s comments that go far beyond the idea that homosexuality is a sin. Robertson said blacks didn´t seem unhappy about oppression in the Jim Crow-era South; he blamed Pearl Harbor on the failure of the Japanese to accept Jesus; and contrary to his protestations, he hates gay people. I don´t think any of that is O.K. I got dozens of letters taking issue with my claims. Some of the letters are hilarious and some are sad, like the

National Security Agency defenders, including President Obama, continue to cite the terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001 when defending the program that scoops up domestic call records in bulk. But asked specifically, on Friday, if he could identify a time when that program stopped a similar attack, President Obama couldn´t. That´s because the program hasn´t prevented a second 9/11. At the end of the year news conference, Reuters´s Mark Felsenthal asked: As you review how to rein in the National Security Agency, a federal judge says that, for example, the government has failed to cite a single instance in which

But last night, the White House made its most consequential announcement yet. The administration will grant a “hardship exemption” from the law’s individual mandate, requiring the purchase of health insurance, to anyone who has had their prior coverage canceled and who “believes” that Obamacare’s offerings “are unaffordable.” These exemptions will substantially alter the architecture of the law’s insurance marketplaces. The problem with solutions is that few of them tend to be perfect, even if they act in a mostly benign manner. Actions produce reactions, a principle as true in politics as it is in physics, and those tend to multiply when solutions increase in complexity. The nature of these unintended consequences changes dramatically when complex “solutions” turn out to be poorly designed and incompetently administered. The rollout of the Affordable Care Act has provided many real-world examples of this, but perhaps none so “unintended” as the consequences discovered by the Seattle Times this weekend. While the Japanese were celebrating the bombing of Pearl Harbor in December of 1941, the mastermind of that attack, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, had a sobering message for his countrymen. "We have awakened a sleeping giant," he said. Even before the war began, the admiral had warned his emperor that Japan would enjoy early victories in any war with the United States, but that winning streak would last only six months to a year, after which American industrial might would inevitably overwhelm the small island nation. The Bipartisan Budget Act that Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., and I drafted will soon become law. We think it´s a small step toward fiscal discipline in Washington. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimates the bill will reduce the deficit over the next ten years by over $20 billion. One part of the bill has become particularly controversial: the reduction in cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) for working-age military retirees.
