Media glare comes back
to burn Raleigh startup

News Observer [Raleigh,NC], by David Bracken

Original Article

Posted By:Fiesta del sol, 10/31/2012 5:47:24 AM

The CEO of a Raleigh startup that was written about in The News & Observer on Monday was visited by a city inspector on Tuesday who told him he was breaking city rules by operating the business out of his North Raleigh home. Justin Miller, whose company Deja Mi has released two smartphone apps since forming more than a year ago, said the zoning inspector informed him that he had 30 days to find another office or he would be cited for illegally operating a business with employees in a residential neighborhood.

Seems to me the city is right. With 13 employees, he surely can afford to rent a place. The value of his neighbors' homes and the quality of their lifestyle should not be the lowest priority of this entrepreneur.

Depends on the neighborhood, I think. They might rather have him than houses sitting vacant.

I agree... if you want to run a personal business from your home in a residential area, keep it personal. When you start hiring people to work in your home, then that does violate zoning laws.

Reply 4 - Posted by: dulac, 10/31/2012 6:48:13 AM     (No. 8976177)

The city is doing what it needs to do to protect homeowners' rights, safety and property values. Could be 13 drug lords or gun runners next time, but the legal precedent would be set. There are other ways Raleigh could support start-ups. Surely there are buildings in commercially zoned areas the city could buy (or partner with the private sector to buy) to create free or low-cost space for start-ups on a means-tested basis. Just because you're enterprising (and hooray to him for being so) doesn't mean you're entitled to break the law.

Sounds like my experience after a 1 1/2 page article in the Houston Chronicle on my home gardens brought the local property tax assessors to my gate the next day and a consequent doubling of my tax rate. Some acts of vanity do not go unpunished.

This is the 21st century. They write phone apps but have to be in the same physical location? That's so last century, bricks and mortar thinking. He should let them telecommute, then the problem goes away.

I am astounded by the posters who would willingly abdicate somebody else's business aspirations. This is how Facebook and other JOB CREATORS start up. Duh. My question: how much is the fine? If it's less than the cost of renting space and furniture and outfitting with utility hook-up, pay it and keep on creating jobs. It's a trade-off, folks. Comply with some rink-dink malum per prohibitum local rules or hire people and create jobs and products. Simple as that.

Reply 9 - Posted by: devnull, 10/31/2012 9:50:57 AM     (No. 8976517)

Telecommuting only gets you so far. Co-location is required if the team is highly innovative. It also helps when you have a very tight dev-test-dev cycle.

The New York Times continues to taunt those who are outraged by the atrocities coming to light in the Gosnell trial. Not only have they managed to avoid properly covering the trial, but they seem to have chosen to stick a thumb in the eye of anyone who is alarmed by the inhumanity. Consider, for example, Sunday’s New York Times lead editorial: “Courage in Kansas,” about the re-opening of an abortion clinic in Kansas, “four years after an anti-abortion extremist opened fire and killed a Wichita abortion provider, Dr. George Tiller

Many media observers were wondering if CNN´s Howard Kurtz was going to expose on his Reliable Sources program Sunday the press´s horrible coverage of the Kermit Gosnell murder trial. As fate would have it, Kurtz´s reporting was just as pathetic as virtually everyone else´s to date giving the matter a total of 90 seconds while sharing bogus statistics including the truly preposterous claim, "The conservative media didn´t do much either"

Marco Rubio was defensive and jargon-addled on ABC’s This Week. He was slick and effective on NBC and CNN and somewhere in between on FOX, But he was selling BS on all four networks. Here are three examples: 1. Rubio repeatedly said it would be “cheaper, faster and easier” for illegal immigrants to go back home, wait 10 years, and apply for a green card (under current law) than to go through the longer “alternative” green card path created by his amnesty bill.

When a lobbyist for families of Newtown shooting victims called the office of Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) to set up a meeting, the first response was a standard D.C. offer. They could get a meeting with her staff, and a quick and simple “hello” from Collins herself, they were told. The families’ answer: not good enough. According to their lobbyists, the families have a rule against staff-only meetings: They won’t do them. They insist on sitting down with the senators themselves.

Fig leaves wilting! It looks like the requirement that the Border Patrol catch 90% of illegal crossers–reported by the WSJ and touted by both Marco Rubio’s chief of staff and my colleague Matt Lewis as an example of the “ tough border enforcement measures” in the Gang of 8 immigration amnesty bill–has turned out to be evanescent, like so many of the other promises amnesty boosters have pitched to conservatives. Of course, the 90% “trigger” was never a barrier to legalization–illegal immigrants will get that more or less immediately under the Gang bill,

Los Angeles - A notorious Rockefeller impostor was found guilty Wednesday of first-degree murder in the death of a man whose bones were found buried beneath the backyard of a suburban home. Christian Gerhartsreiter was tried 28 years after the disappearance of newlyweds John and Linda Sohus in a heavily circumstantial cold case. Much of the prosecution´s evidence focused on the strange behavior of the man who adopted many names including Clark Rockefeller. He masqueraded as an heir to the fabled oil fortune for 20 years. The case went to the jury late Tuesday morning and the

President Obama´s decision last year to allow young people living in the U.S. illegally to stay and work marked the biggest shift in immigration policy in decades, hailed as a landmark step toward the American dream for a generation of immigrants. But months later, many immigrants are having vastly different reactions to the change depending on where they live, and they aren´t flocking to the program at the levels the government originally expected. Pro golfers, golf writers, and TV commentators are up in arms that Tiger Woods was only given a 2-stroke penalty for his illegal drop on the 15th hole yesterday. Tiger said last night that he dropped his ball two yards behind his previous spot, clearly violating the rule that you must drop "as nearly as possible" to your original spot. Golf people are not happy about it. They say that the new rule is B.S. (or it´s at least being misinterpreted), and Tiger should DQ himself to save the integrity of the game.

Few Americans can not answer this question: who is the worst domestic mass murderer in United States’ history? Due to the United States media, most are aware that Timothy McVeigh slaughtered 168 people with a bomb in 1995. Most Americans also know the names of our three most monstrous serial killers: “The Green River Killer” Gary Ridgeway, Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy. The U.S. media is again responsible for the general awareness of these men; these stories deserved — and received — national attention due to our common interest in personal safety, the rule of law

Since he first became a presidential candidate, President Obama must have spent millions of dollars in legal expenses to combat dozens of so-called "birther" challenges seeking the original documents pertaining to his birth. As president, he famously issued an electronic document on the White House website in 2011; the document purported to be his long-form birth certificate, though it is apparently a forgery. In addition, he has taken great pains to hide the paper trail of passport records, college transcripts, and other data -- all of which a prospective employer might require of a job applicant.

Here is something I don’t understand: liberals are often revealed as vile, vulgar hatemongers–not all of them, of course, but far too many–yet they never seem to pay a penalty at the polls. Why is that? Margaret Thatcher’s death has been the latest occasion for the Left to show its true stripes. All across the U.K., there have been demonstrations–vulgar at best, and violent at worst. In Bristol, lefties celebrating a Thatcher “death street party” started fires, destroyed property and battled police: This evening in Trafalgar Square, liberals have turned out for a long-planned celebration of Thatcher’s death:
