BP expresses 'significant uncertainty' about settlement for 2010 Gulf spill

| The British oil firm BP on Tuesday warned it might be unable to reach a settlement with the U.S. government over the 2010 Gulf of Mexico spill. “BP is in ongoing discussions with the DOJ [Justice Department] and other federal agencies regarding a possible settlement of these claims and whilst it is ready to settle on reasonable terms, a number of unresolved issues remain and there is significant uncertainty as to whether an agreement will ultimately be reached,” BP said Tuesday in its third-quarter earnings report. BP could owe as much as $21 billion in Clean Water Act fines alone, on top of

Comments: Eric Holder's DoJ is pressuring BP to settle this so that announcement can be made before election day in plan to buy Florida votes. Since the money would go for "wildlife habitats," Florida would be the state to get almost all this money, not Alabama, Mississippi, or Louisiana where the economic damages occurred. To get BP to agree to the deal before election day, the deal was structured so that BP would get the tax breaks. Take from the evil oil company and give to the liberal's pet cause. Spread the wealth.

Obama's regime bypassed the established legal procedures for apportioning blame and awarding damages in a court of law. Instead, he strong-armed BP to agree to funding a mega-bucks slush fund for his discretion in rewarding friends and punishing enemies.
This is what Fascist regimes do.

I recall that BP was already pressured to put $20 billion into a fund at the time of the spill. This was to be used to settle claims against BP. So now BP has to come up with another $21 billion in fines. This has to be the biggest shakedown outside of Russia.

I have no love lost for BP but they need to lay low until, hopefully, January. Then some people with morals will be available for settlement discussions.

BP will need to settle this with the Romney administration. Then, then can pay up, less the 0bama/Holder shakedown, and move on.

BP got a notoriously bad deal under Obama. They could certainly reach a more business like settlement with a Romney administration. Incidentally, Boehner and Cantor were complicit in the unlawful dealings of Obama because they censored Congressman Joe Barton of Texas when he called the Obama deal what it was--a shakedown.

It would certainly be in the interests of BP shareholders for BP to wait and settle this under a non-socialist government.

I don't recall any evidence of the oil ever being found. So what's the big shakedown all about?

I'm in SW FL and radio ads are being run locally by some attorneys (of course!) that YOU could be eligible for some of BP's money if you own a hotel, are a hair dresser, get out of bed in the morning. Just kidding about that, but it's about the truth. I can't believe who all they are saying can get the $$. IT IS A SHAKEDOWN. And Zippy had his hand out first to the tune of $20 billion.

Now that the criminal charges against BP and its drilling contractor have been settled and cannot be reopened under the principal of double jeopardy, we can expect to see an argument develop over who should be responsible when the government takes charge under the National Contingency Plan. (snip)he proved that there was no oil from the well in the annulus at a total depth of about 17,200 feet. That fact alone blows a huge hole through the government´s allegations against former BP VP David Rainey

The Egyptian government has nabbed a major terrorist tied to the Sept. 11, 2012 terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, (snip) And that terrorist has direct, longstanding ties to al Qaeda leader Ayman al Zawahiri. The captured terrorist is Muhammad Jamal al Kashef (a.k.a. Abu Ahmed), who served as a senior Egyptian Islamic Jihad (EIJ) terrorist in the 1990s and was imprisoned for years. The EIJ was headed by Ayman al Zawahiri, who merged the group with Osama bin Laden’s operation.

The Republican assault on Susan Rice is a fabricated scandal, attacking her for repeating CIA talking points, almost verbatim, to explain the Benghazi attacks. The U.N. ambassador’s version, even with its omissions, may turn out to be closer to the truth than some of the inflammatory GOP rhetoric. But just because Rice is being unfairly pilloried, this doesn’t mean she would be a good secretary of state. And it’s a close call on the merits: Given her friendship with President Obama, she would be uniquely able to speak as his emissary. But she would also carry some baggage

It´s hard to believe that the Miami Dolphins cheerleaders could be outshone - but it looks like a group of fun-loving soldiers in Afghanistan might have done it. Call Me Maybe by Carly-Rae Jepsen was turned into a music video by the cheerleaders in August, with the ladies splashing around in a swimming pool, writhing on the beach and waving pom-poms. Earlier this month, the soldiers gave them a run for their money with dance moves and lip synching making do with props from their Afghanistan base. After repeatedly clashing with co-anchors and overseeing plummeting ratings, the Today show´s Matt Lauer is reportedly being given the boot. The long-time host, who earns a staggering $21.5 million a year, is being blamed for the NBC morning show´s dismal performance over the past three months and sources claim ratings will only improve if he is replaced. According to The National Enquirer, weatherman Al Roker is plotting to push the 54-year-old TV veteran out of his anchor chair and is lobbying a newly appointed Today producer for help.

In addition to the tragedy of lost lives and injuries, Superstorm Sandy caused many billions of dollars in property damage. The sad truth: disasters occur every year in America. If you’re unlucky enough to suffer a disaster-related casualty, here’s what you need to know about the federal income tax implications. Theoretically, our beloved Internal Revenue Code allows you to claim an itemized deduction — on Schedule A of your Form 1040 — for personal casualty losses to the extent they are not covered by insurance. Exactly what is a casualty loss?

Michelle Obama has admitted that she is already tired of the bangs she first sported in January. The First Lady said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight: ´Bangs are a day-by-day proposition. They´re starting to grow out, get a little irritating.´ Still, she hasn´t let her hairdo woes get her down. ´It´s okay,´ she said after her initial complaint. ´We´ll be good.´ The first indication that her hairstyle was becoming a burden came about last weekend, when Malia, 14, was spotted adjusting her mother´s hair during the White House Easter Egg Roll.

Sen. John McCain says he doesn´t understand the threats from some of his Republican colleagues to filibuster a bill on background checks to buy guns. "I don´t understand it," the Arizona Republican said on Sunday of the threat coming from Sen. Rand Paul,Sen. Ted Cruz, Sen. Mike Lee and nine other Republicans. "The purpose of the United States Senate is to debate and to vote and to let the people know where we stand.” "What are we afraid of? ... If this issue is as important as we all think it is, why not take ... it up and debate?"

President Obama´s biggest gaffe yesterday when speaking of California Attorney General Kamala Harris was not in flirtatiously complimenting her as "the best-looking attorney general," but in introducing an observation from the system of beauty into a forum that was about the system of power. What´s that, you say? Irin Carmon does a great job in Salon in laying out the bounds of propriety for when it´s appropriate to talk about a woman´s looks as a general matter. But I´ve long felt we lack a solid theoretical underpinning for easily discussing these issues, and why precisely it is that

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”

Los Angeles — Some people have had it with TV. They´ve had enough of the 100-plus channel universe. They don´t like timing their lives around network show schedules. They´re tired of $100-plus monthly bills. A growing number of them have stopped paying for cable and satellite TV service, and don´t even use an antenna to get free signals over the air. (Snip) Last month, the Nielsen Co. started labeling people in this group "Zero TV" households, because they fall outside the traditional definition of a TV home. There are 5 million of these residences in the U.S., up from

On Friday, Sean Hannity brought Pat Smith, mother of the late Sean Smith, on his radio program. The 34-year-old information management officer was one of four Americans murdered in the Benghazi embassy attack on September 11, 2012. In the chilling interview, a distraught Ms. Smith, in tears, pleaded for answers and spoke of the efforts to silence her. Ms. Smith first relayed how her son, prior to the attack, requested additional security in advance and warned the State Department: He did tell them, ahead of time, he typed it into his little typewriter over there,

Put out an all-points bulletin: Millions of Americans have gone missing from the workforce. Every month that those would-be workers are gone raises the odds that they might never come back, dimming the prospects for future economic growth. The vanishing trend is more than a decade old, but it accelerated during the Great Recession. Throughout 2012, economists held out hope that it had stopped. But then came Friday’s jobs report, and hopes were dashed. The Labor Department reported that the U.S. labor force — everyone who has a job or is looking for one — shrank

Susan Patton, the Princeton alumna who became famous for her letter urging Ivy League women to use their college years to find a mate, has been denounced as a traitor to feminism, to coeducation, to the university ideal. But really she’s something much more interesting: a traitor to her class. Her betrayal consists of being gauche enough to acknowledge publicly a truth that everyone who’s come up through Ivy League culture knows intuitively —

Gluten-free diets are all the rage, but they can be dangerous if not done right. What is gluten? It´s the spongy complex of proteins, found naturally in wheat, rye, and barley, that gives elasticity to dough and allows it to rise. When flour is moistened and either kneaded or mixed into dough, gluten molecules form an elastic, microscopic latticework that traps the carbon dioxide produced when yeast ferments, causing dough to inflate like a hot air balloon. Baking hardens the gluten, which helps the finished product keep its shape. Wheat — and gluten — is ubiquitous in the American diet.
