| The second presidential debate is over, and to almost no one's surprise, the president gave a better performance than he did last week. Snap polls after the debate, in fact, said the president performed narrowly better than Mitt Romney. At least in part, I'm guessing the president scored a few points on his impassioned defense of his response to the attack on our embassy in Libya. The problem for the president, however, is that his statements about Libya — like so much of his rhetoric — soared much higher than the facts will support. And, with almost three weeks remaining

1400 years of incompatibility with any other religion and the West in general should tell you something! The only thing these single minded cave-men understand is a bigger hammer and pain.

Look for a "Operation Wag the Camel" big attack to occur in Libya maybe even before the next debate on foreign policy that will be held next Monday evening, but surely before the election, with Obama giving a national address, pointing out that he gave the orders and that "justice has been done". Obama has to do that to change the dynamics from his deceptive and sometimes outright false statements and responses to the attack on the US Consulate in Libya by radical Islamist terrorists.

Following Tiger Woods´ recent win at the Bay Hill Invitational golf tournament last month, Nike released a commercial featuring its star endorser that defiantly stated, “Winning settles everything.” Company representatives said the ad was intended only to answer questions about the golfer´s competitive drive after several years of uneven play. What Nike didn´t acknowledge, but almost everyone assumes, is that the ad also was intended to silence anyone still critical of Woods´ personal transgressions off the course. As a sports fan in general, and a lover of the game of golf in particular,

It´s no secret the United States has an unemployment problem. The government issues a detailed report each month that estimates the number of people who are either unemployed or underemployed and looking for work. The persistently high numbers — especially for young people and minorities — tell a very sad story for the individuals, their families and the country, as well. But there´s an even more portentous unemployment story unfolding today that receives almost no attention at all. And its consequences may spell even greater doom for the friends, families and taxpayers it victimizes. I´m referring to the millions of Americans whom

John Mackey, the co-founder and co-CEO of Whole Foods Markets, says he doesn’t court controversy. But he also believes in speaking his mind. Last month he angered liberals by telling an NPR interviewer that Obamacare was “technically speaking” a form of fascism. “Socialism is where the government owns the means of production,” he explained. “In fascism, the government doesn’t own the means of production, but they do control it — and that’s what’s happening with our health-care programs and these reforms.” Mackey backed off his comments later in a blog post. The F-word “stirs up too much negative emotion with its

After the slaughter of innocent young lives in Connecticut, the country was promised a national dialogue that would include some very “tough questions.” Sadly, what we´ve gotten instead is the same old political posturing about whether the country will impose new restrictions on the access to guns. In fact, the debate we are now having — versus the one we should be having — is not really a debate at all. And the reason it´s a phony debate is because limiting gun sales would do absolutely nothing to prevent the next lunatic from gaining access to one or more of Headline corrected by staff.

Praise government! Just hours after the federal bureaucracy went over the “fiscal cliff” on New Year´s Day, President Obama voiced approval for an emergency Congressional bill to save us all. Yes, ailing American families and businesses will pay more in taxes. But that´s what it takes for big government to avoid real budget cuts, for now. As soon as the beltway bandits raise the federal debt ceiling above $16.4 trillion in February, runaway deficit spending can continue unabated. Hallelujah! All sarcasm aside, American taxpayers are holding the short end of the stick again. The media wants us to believe Source corrected by staff.

It´s time to ring in the new year and wring out the old with some reflections on the election, the world, our fair city and, obligatorily, the fiscal cliff. First, the election. Colorado voted to legalize marijuana in contravention to federal law. Apart from the joy of telling the feds to shove it, the argument for legalization is that it´s no worse than alcohol, and we all know what a good thing alcohol is. Now we´ll be able to get drunk on vodka and high on pot brownies for the drive home. Speaking of the feds, the re-elected president nominated

As the president gets closer to achieving his most cherished political ambition — raising taxes on the top earners in our country — I´ve started to wonder what satisfaction he, and those he´s convinced this is a good idea, will actually experience. Forget all the silly speeches. By any seriously objective standard, the president´s tax increases will do little or nothing to reduce his deficits or his approaching legacy of extraordinary national debt. Without increasing taxes more broadly and without structurally reforming our entitlement programs, which now appears likely, the president´s plan changes virtually nothing about the direction or funding of

Let´s get a few things straight right up front: Republicans lost the presidential campaign in part because their nominee did not have the resources to respond to several hundreds of millions of dollars of attack ads launched by the president in May, June and July. They also lost it because they had an inferior get-out-the vote operation in comparison with the president´s. And yes, they also because they alienated several large blocks of voters, including blacks, Latinos, gays and women voters who focused primarily on reproductive rights. Those are the cold, hard facts. I´m a lifelong Republican, but I´ve never

The good news about the election this year, regardless of who wins the presidency, is that it has caused a lot of people to think more critically about the proper size and role of government in our lives. What this election has not done, however, is grounded that conversation in economic reality. For that, I strongly recommend that every voter — Republican, Democrat and independent — go online and get a copy of “The Moment of Truth,” the report of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform. To be clear, this is not a political document in the sense

As Muslim crowds dissipate and American diplomatic missions return to normal activities, here are three final thoughts on the riots that began this September 11 and killed about 30: The movie really did matter: The Obama administration dishonestly skirted responsibility for the murder of four Americans in Libya by claiming that the attack was a protest that got unpredictably out of hand against the Innocence of Muslims video. In response, leading analysts have concluded that the video hardly mattered anywhere. Barry Rubin scorns the video as a “phony excuse for the demonstration” in Egypt. Michael Ledeen upbraids the administration for

Sen. John McCain says he doesn´t understand the threats from some of his Republican colleagues to filibuster a bill on background checks to buy guns. "I don´t understand it," the Arizona Republican said on Sunday of the threat coming from Sen. Rand Paul,Sen. Ted Cruz, Sen. Mike Lee and nine other Republicans. "The purpose of the United States Senate is to debate and to vote and to let the people know where we stand.” "What are we afraid of? ... Michelle Obama has admitted that she is already tired of the bangs she first sported in January. The First Lady said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight: ´Bangs are a day-by-day proposition. They´re starting to grow out, get a little irritating.´ Still, she hasn´t let her hairdo woes get her down. ´It´s okay,´ she said after her initial complaint. ´We´ll be good.´ The first indication that her hairstyle was becoming a burden came about last weekend, when Malia, 14, was spotted adjusting her mother´s hair during the White House Easter Egg Roll.

President Obama´s biggest gaffe yesterday when speaking of California Attorney General Kamala Harris was not in flirtatiously complimenting her as "the best-looking attorney general," but in introducing an observation from the system of beauty into a forum that was about the system of power. What´s that, you say? Irin Carmon does a great job in Salon in laying out the bounds of propriety for when it´s appropriate to talk about a woman´s looks as a general matter. But I´ve long felt we lack a solid theoretical underpinning for easily discussing these issues, and why precisely it is that

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”

Los Angeles — Some people have had it with TV. They´ve had enough of the 100-plus channel universe. They don´t like timing their lives around network show schedules. They´re tired of $100-plus monthly bills. A growing number of them have stopped paying for cable and satellite TV service, and don´t even use an antenna to get free signals over the air. (Snip) Last month, the Nielsen Co. started labeling people in this group "Zero TV" households, because they fall outside the traditional definition of a TV home. There are 5 million of these residences in the U.S., up from

On Friday, Sean Hannity brought Pat Smith, mother of the late Sean Smith, on his radio program. The 34-year-old information management officer was one of four Americans murdered in the Benghazi embassy attack on September 11, 2012. In the chilling interview, a distraught Ms. Smith, in tears, pleaded for answers and spoke of the efforts to silence her. Ms. Smith first relayed how her son, prior to the attack, requested additional security in advance and warned the State Department: He did tell them, ahead of time, he typed it into his little typewriter over there,

Put out an all-points bulletin: Millions of Americans have gone missing from the workforce. Every month that those would-be workers are gone raises the odds that they might never come back, dimming the prospects for future economic growth. The vanishing trend is more than a decade old, but it accelerated during the Great Recession. Throughout 2012, economists held out hope that it had stopped. But then came Friday’s jobs report, and hopes were dashed. The Labor Department reported that the U.S. labor force — everyone who has a job or is looking for one — shrank

No one is more preoccupied these days with Hillary Clinton´s 2016 plans than the Beltway political class—not even the former presidential candidate herself. To hear some tell it, her decision will be dispositive for all other Democrats thinking of entering the race. And pundits and reporters aren´t the only ones positing the "The Hillary Factor": No less than the House Democratic whip, Steny Hoyer, told BuzzFeed, “I don´t know that anybody would run against Hillary…. If she runs, she clears the field.” It´s an understandable conclusion, given Clinton´s stature in the Democratic Party and her 70 percent

Susan Patton, the Princeton alumna who became famous for her letter urging Ivy League women to use their college years to find a mate, has been denounced as a traitor to feminism, to coeducation, to the university ideal. But really she’s something much more interesting: a traitor to her class. Her betrayal consists of being gauche enough to acknowledge publicly a truth that everyone who’s come up through Ivy League culture knows intuitively —

The couple, who married on April 4, 2008, took in the sights of Old Havana, visited a school, dined on a rooftop terrace and strolled the fan-filled streets in their island best.(snip).The power couple declined to answer journalists´ questions about their visit to the island nation, but some outlets are reporting that the moguls are there as tourists, though that would be illegal because of the half-century embargo the U.S. has on the Communist country.
